GENERAL INFORMATION Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Events Guide Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources publishes its events guide twice a year and distributes it throughout the county at key locations, as well as online at scgov.net/parks. Become a Friend of Sarasota County Parks The fabric of any community is its parks, and Sarasota County is fortunate to have a diverse park system featuring a variety of neighborhood and regional parks, trails, natural areas and beautiful beaches. The Friends of Sarasota County Parks is a 501(c)(3) corporation which was formed in 2003 to provide volunteer support and raise funds to enhance county parks, programs and preserves.

Over the years the Friends of Sarasota County Parks have raised funds to develop new parks, add playgrounds and send children to summer camp. Our current fund-raising campaign is focused on efforts to construct shade structures over county dugouts and spectator bleachers. We invite you to join us! With rental spaces both inside and out, we can accommodate everything…from a small private party to a business expo, a sports tournament or a wedding reception for up to 1,200 guests. Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources accepts major credit and debit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover) for payment of programs and services. The charge will appear on your statement as “Sarasota County Parks and Recreation.”

Refunds Requests for rental refunds shall be submitted in writing. A $25 administrative fee shall be applied to all approved refund requests.

There are no refunds granted for a cancellation/refund request that is received 60 days or less prior to the reservation date unless otherwise stated for rentals of athletic fields or specialty facilities.

The department may reschedule or refund the reservation if adverse environmental conditions occur including local advisory for a tornado, hurricane watch or warning, imminent flood warning or red tide. No refunds will be granted in cases of inclement weather.

Some programs may not allow refunds, or may not allow refunds after a certain date; refer to specific program information. There is a $25 administration fee for program refunds where applicable. Programs whose total cost is less than $25 are not eligible for a refund. No refunds are given on passes.

Photo Policy Photographs taken at Sarasota County parks, facilities and programs often are used in presentations, brochures and other county publications. If you do not wish to have your picture or a family member’s picture taken, please let the photographer know in advance.

500 B.C. at Phillippi Assist archaeologists in sorting historical artifacts while learning about the Manasota Indians and their encampment off the shores of Phillippi Creek. Participants will have the opportunity to touch artifacts used by the Manasota Indians 2,500 years ago.

The decals are located every 260 feet along the trails and are part of a safety project designed to help emergency responders find people in distress quickly.

Dragon Boat Paddling: 101, 201 and Team

Year-round Ages: 12 and up Fee: $60-$80 (Fee varies by class. Annual administration fee is $25) These programs aim to help participants learn the basic paddling skills of dragon boating. Three levels of classes are offered in order to allow paddlers to participate and progress based on their individual abilities.

Classes must be taken sequentially. Team dragon boat paddling will consist of competing in tournaments. Courses will be taught by a nationally certified dragon boat instructor. Participants are required to provide their own water safe clothes and shoes, as well as sun protection and water.

Participants will be responsible for registering with USA Canoe/Kayak.

Venice Train Depot Tours

The Venice Area Historical Society conducts tours of the historic Venice Train Depot and Rollins W. Coakley Railroad Park. The depot was completed in 1927 and was restored in 2003. Features include: Walker and Gillette architecture, exhibits of Venice history, tours of the Rollins W. Coakley campus, the Red Caboose, the Gunther GebelWilliams statue, and access to The Legacy Trail and Venetian Waterway.

The historic and versatile Venice Train Depot is the perfect spot to host your next party, meeting or special event. The Freight Room, private and rustic, comfortably accommodates up to 75 guests. Just off the room is an attached patio—the perfect spot for food buffets, a cocktail area or extra seating. Other amenities included in the price are six 8-foot-long banquet tables, chairs, and an elevator for guests using wheelchairs. Price is $33 an hour plus tax.

In addition to the Freight Room, the depot is home to a historic caboose, with a 1,920 square-foot patio, also equipped with an elevator for guests using wheelchairs. Patio prices range from $15 to $30 for three hours.

The historic Venice Train Depot Freight Room, Platform Area and Caboose Patio are available to rent for your next meeting or special event. The Freight Room is rustic and private, with brick walls and a wood floor. Two large freight doors, on tracks, slide open to reveal large windows. The Freight Room is equipped with an ADA elevator and comfortably accommodates up to 75 guests. The rental price includes 75 chairs and six 8-foot-long tables. Phillippi Estate Park and Friends of Sarasota County Parks

About the farmhouse In 1916, Edson Keith bought a 60-acre plot of land along Phillippi Creek which is now known as Phillippi Estate Park. The Keith farmhouse was the first building erected on the estate and is one of the few existing wood-frame structures from the early 1900s in Sarasota County.

The farmhouse is currently under renovation to become an interpretive center, open free to the public, featuring artifacts and memorabilia of life in the early days of Sarasota. The building remains a vivid reminder of Sarasota’s origins and the people who built the community.

THERAPEUTIC RECREATION (T-REC) The T-REC Coalition of Sarasota County is comprised of more than eight local agencies working together to provide year-round recreational opportunities for teens and adults with disabilities. Monthly activities take place at different venues throughout the county, and include dances, sporting events and much more. T-REC membership is free and includes a T-REC badge, lanyard, email notification of upcoming events and more. Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competitions for people with intellectual disabilities.
