Dexter Sullivan, president of Student Association, conducted an assembly with a panel discussion on education at McClain High School Tuesday, Nov. 30. The forum, which was a part of Sullivanʼs newly launched project, "Man to Man," highlighted the worth and necessity of education.

“The immediate goal of 'Man to Man' is to become intentional of serving specific needs in the community,” Sullivan said. “We started going into the schools and discovered that 55 percent of African Americans are expected to graduate high school and only 57 percent of Hispanics are expected to graduate.”

The percentage of white Americans and Asians was much higher, according to Sullivan. 'Man to Manʼs' object is to create opportunities for underprivileged groups to receive education and to stress its importance. To do this, the project leaders have started a series of academic events in schools to encourage young people to strive for a higher education. “Our very first event was in McClain High School in North Tulsa. Students, local educators, community leaders, and even the radio personality Sonny Mac was there to watch the event unfold,” Sullivan said. David Green, a student at ORU and a volunteer for "Man to Man," was excited to see the first kick-off event.

“I'm pumped to see what we can do and where things will take us. We've already had several people who signed up to stay in touch. So it was a great start in my mind,” Green said. Sullivan said that Man to Manʼs goal in the future is to increase urban development through education.

“The theme for Man to Man is to expose, educate and empower,” Sullivan said. “We come along side the educational system to bring strength and support, but we are not aiming to be the answer to all of the educationʼs problems.”

New Wireless Network Causes Connection Problems for Students Last Updated on Sunday, 09 January 2011 00:19 Written by Sara Rozalina Krstevski Saturday, 08 January 2011 01:53

Many students have returned from break to find they cannot connect to the new ORU wireless networks. In order to have access the internet, they must now enter their Novell login information in the security-enabled network ORUStudents. Problems have arisen, however, and many students cannot connect.

Local Weather

While students' reactions have varied, all agree they want the problem fixed.

“I kind of had to take an adventure until I figured out what the login was supposed to be,” said Swiss Fisher, an MBA student.

Sophomore Garett Pearson says that the network has blocked him.

“I tried to log in, but it keeps saying that the authentication isnʼt valid. It would be nice if it worked smoothly,” Pearson said. Mark Bender, Chief Information Technology Officer, says IT is doing whatever it can to help the students.

“Students are encouraged to stop by the Academic Computer Lab for assistance in connecting with their devices,” Bender said. “IT has also been visiting the dorms in the evening to assist students with connection issues. We will continue in these efforts as needed.” All students were sent an e-mail during the fall semester to notify them about the change to a more secure network.

“We are actively exploring options to improve the user experience as it pertains to wireless access,” Bender said. “ORU chose to use an enterprise based solution that is much more secure than end-users typically see with cheap Wi-Fi gear purchased from stores such as Best Buy or Office Depot. The result is a little more effort up-front to prevent any potential long-term security issues.” By Sara Rozalina Krstevski Tags: Computers

This has been a week to remember. For the first time in recorded history, Tulsa was blanketed in more than 14 inches of snow. Oral Roberts University closed for four days straight, an event no student on campus had yet experienced.

The unexpected university-wide campusing left some students cheering for joy and some lamenting the sudden onslaught of cabin fever.

“I like it,” she said. “I got in a friendʼs truck and went around the Mabee Center parking lot dragging people in a sled.” For students from northern states, however, the cityʼs sluggish attempts to clear the roads were laughable and in come cases, annoying. Freshman Elizabeth Bovenzi, though she loved the break, is used to having even more snow. “To me itʼs unbelievable,” she said, “but I can understand that Tulsa is not used to having this much precipitation.” Mike Grier, a freshman from Indiana, said, “I think it was a good three day break. I definitely used it to get ahead in homework and catch up on rest. I enjoyed it very much. It was kind of weird for me, because Iʼm used to snow back at home.” With so much unexpected free time on their hands, students did everything from homework to sledding to roughhousing on their floors.

Students used the slippery maintenance road to sled on. Photo by Kathleen Kelly Jessica Waite, a freshman from Virginia, said, “I think itʼs a wonderful break from school. I was hoping to catch up on homework but I ended up playing most of the time. We had an epic snowball fight with our brother wing!”

The hills behind towers were covered with students using whatever they could find to carry them down the snowy slopes. Saga trays were naturally in abundance, as were real sleds and flattened cardboard boxes. Some students even tried rolling down the hills in barrels. Others used plastic box lids and laundry baskets. One group of adventuresome students ventured out shirtless to “surf” the snow on surfboards. While students were sleeping and rejoicing in their good luck, Sodexo workers were scrambling to find supplies and personnel to feed the campus-bound student body.

Andrew Cox, director of operations, was not ready for the experience either.

“When we were driving home our car got stuck about a mile from our home and we had to walk the rest of the way,” Cox said. “Not even the city of Tulsa was ready for this.” Michael Youmans, a supervisor for Sodexo, said that they had enough food to last the week, but just barely.

Pamm Meyer, a manager at Saga, said that she had to recruit her husband and daughter due to staff shortages. “There was about 10 of us working and about 880 students coming in for every meal,” said Meyer. “Quite a few students offered to help out, but we told them to just enjoy their snow days.”

Walmart's distribution trucks were snow-bound for several days, and they had to make do with the food in stock. Photo by Melanie Wespetal

In the end, however, Meyer was pleasantly surprised with how things turned out. “One of the things that made it all worth it was that we got a stack of thank you notes from students thanking us for coming in,” Meyer said. “That just made our day worth it and we want to thank the students of ORU.” By Melanie Wespetal and Sara Rozalina Krstevski

To Rebecca Law, travel and music were as common in her childhood as Barbies and G.I. Joes are to most kids. While most kids her age were starting gymnastics or Little League, Law was watching thousands of people become saved through her parents' music ministry worldwide.

“My parents started a music group called Living Sound that traveled around the world," said Law, "Thousands of people got saved through these music crusades overseas. They started out traveling with Oral Roberts back in the day,” said Law. "This really triggered my interest in music.” Now as an adult, she gets to carry on the torch.

Law is an up-and-coming singer and songwriter based in Tulsa, OK. She has already released her debut worship extended play “Letters” only a year into showbiz. “I grew up in a very musical family,” said Law . “I trained on the piano when I was young and I began singing and performing at the age of four. I started playing guitar later.” Her interest in creating something from her passion of music went into high gear while attending ORU.

“I started out at ORU as a vocal performance major and then finished off doing a music minor and did various training vocally, on guitar, and on piano,” said Law, an '05 grad. Law's musical influence from was largely connected to ministry. However composing music is not all fun and games. Law says that there must be some thought put into it and itʼs a long process to create an extended play, or EP.

“For songwriting, I think of the ideas I want to write about and sit down when I have a tune or words in my head,” Law said. “Then I work out a consistent riff or melody on guitar. It is great to collaborate as well because then you have several different ideas coming together in creating the sound.” Besides being a worship leader in a local church, Law is working on a new EP with a completely different sound. “I want to start working on a Folk/Pop EP of different songs that I wrote in the last year. The goal is to start collaborating with some musicians who have great writing skills and an ability to combine a mix between the Civil 2/10/11 12:14 PM Wars, Ingrid Michaelson, and Sufjan Stevens,” said Law. Lawʼs advice to aspiring musicians is to not give up on their visions.

Around 6 p.m., ORU students were evacuated away from areas with windows and moved to basements and lower floors. The all-clear came around 30 minutes later. Some students ventured out into the lightening rain to return to Saga, where they had left plates full of uneaten food as security officers cleared the cafeteria.

Flooding occurred on the second floor of the LRC. The main entrance and parts of two of the classrooms were covered with less than an inch of water. Housekeeping staff member Sel Lian explained, “It was raining a lot and it flowed down the stairs. The wind brought the water in.” There was no other flooding that they know of, said Lian "It didnʼt destroy the carpet," he added, "but I think that they will replace it like they did last time in the prayer tower." A tornado watch will remain in effect for most of eastern Oklahoma until 10 p.m.
