INTERNATIONAL COLD EPOCH (ICE) SEWARD, NEBRASKA FALL 2023 ICE DRILLING RESEARCH FACILITY & EXHIBIT ATLAS F MISSILE SILO PROFESSOR : BRIAN KELLY ICE Silo Project is reusing an Atlas F Missile Silo from the Cold War in Seward, Nebraska.

This initiative will convert an abandoned Atlas F Missile Silo into an ice drilling facility to study climate change. The project began with a thorough investigation of the history of the site, using AI to visualize the proposed building and creating concept drawings that capture the essence.

The initial phase of the design was to create a distinctive, harmonious space space while emphasizing the division between the public and private spaces with a retaining wall. This wall is crucial in separating public (exhibition), private (research), and separate residences that highlight the balance between work, and leisure. The design altered the topography to hide the building from first glance and integrated it into the landscape through soil relocation.

This multi-level building was divided into sections based on the notion that guests would gain from a customized experience that included displays, dedicated events, drilling spaces, and a more in-depth look at Cold War history.

COUTURE 320 E NORTH WATER STREET CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SPRING 2023 MIXED USE TOWER PROFESSOR : MATTHEW MILLER This project takes on the challenge of designing a mid-rise, mixed-use office tower in Chicago. The “third place” concept is a response to the changing work landscape of the sharing economy and remote working. The project is a resimercial design that seamlessly integrates coworking areas and residential settings. The tower’s commercial floors are divided into two halves, each offering a mixture of relaxed and structured working environments. The tower offers more than offices. Employees can relax in the outdoor area and enjoy outdoor activities. Residents have access to rooftops and amenities such as a gym and an outdoor pool.

The plan includes detailed plans for parking, retail, residential gardens, landscapes, and circulation. Three different condominiums offer privacy and exclusive features. Commercial headquarters strategically positions the important offices. The ground floor is home to all common areas, amenities, and garden links. The rooftop garden offers stunning views to residents. In the lobby, you’ll find retail, food courts, cafes, lounges, and more. This project redefines urban lifestyle by catering to diverse residents and tourists.

ARCANUM ISLAND FALL 2022 TOXIC RESEARCH FACILITY STORY TELLING THROUGH DESIGN INSTRUCTORS : NATE GISELMAN & ADAM WIESE The project began with a story about “Arcanum Island” and the need to create a research facility at our chosen location. A hundred years ago a top-secret organization began searching this remote Island. When things went awry, the top secret organization quickly fled the island and hid its tracks. Researchers present day arrived on this island to find that a toxic substance was spreading away from the original research site. The new facility was to study the toxin and find a way to stop its spread on the island. The first step in this project was to separate the research area from the living space. Researchers could take a mental break and continue their research.

The “glass box” is a large greenhouse in which scientists could perform tests in a toxic-free, enclosed environment. The “glass box” houses the laboratories, separated by elevators and decontamination showers. On the first floor of the lab, there are rooms dedicated to soil sciences. The upper floor of the lab is dedicated to radioactivity and plant science.

Outside the glass box is a small office that is used to collaborate and present. Researchers can focus on their work and have the view oriented toward the glass box. The campus is connected by a skywalk made of glass that provides two pathways to the labs and living areas. The skywalk is connected to the housing structure through a large atrium with many openings on both sides. It allows for communication and connectivity between floors.

Housing is designed as a respite from the working environment. The housing includes social areas, private apartments, and amenities that encourage researchers to interact.

THE RESEARCH LAB IS A SPECIALIZED LABORATORY THAT STUDIES THE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF PLANTS AND SOIL. SEVEN GROW BED SYSTEMS CONTAIN PLANT FOR STUDYING TOXIN EFFECTS AND STUDYING THE RADIATION IN THE GLASSBOX. THERE ARE DECONTAMINATION ROOMS THAT ALLOW RESEARCHERS TO DESCEND DIRECTLY FROM THEIR LABS INTO THE CONTAMINATED ZONE AND THEN RETURN BACK TO THEIR LABS VIA THE SKYWALK.
