Hotel Bing is an upscale hotel and tribute to the work of fashion designer Anine Bing. Anine Bing Started her career as a Danish model but evolved to become so much more. From model, to blogger, to mom, to designer, she effortlessly transverses the globe and her clothing reflects that. “Effortless, rock n roll, and timeless” are the three words that she said describes her style. Her fashion designs are classic, high quality, uncomplicated and can be worn through out the day to a variety of different settings from casual to dressed up for more sophisticated occasions. She stated that she keeps her closet “tight” adding very few pieces to her small personal collection of clothing – by nature, her approach to design in sustainably thoughtful and the design of a hotel in her tribute will incorporate LEED-thinking design principles. The hotel will embody her care, passion and craftsmanship seen in her fashion design and will include interiors and create experiences that embraces her style.

– FIRST FLOOR
Organization- the primary departments or divisions, the types of spaces in each, number of floors, program per floor and their adjacency [or interaction] to each other. Are there clear distinctions between public and private areas? Include all activities and areas of the facility. Organization Diagrams: colorcoded based off use that shows layout and adjacencies to each other. I selected the spaces that were public in use for staff and guests, and a "typical" guest floor, and the 37th floor that shows accommodation considerations for longer stay guests, with larger spaces for dining and terrace.

Diagram of primary circulation and secondary circulation. Is it clearly defined, easy to navigate, and free of physical obstructions? Consider ADA issues and how those with physical disabilities are accommodated. How does the internal circulation relate to the entry areas? I will get in detail later in this report, but circulation does seem constricted on the 2nd, 4th floor, and a typical guest floor. Circulation seems to be constricted around the enclosed courtyard and pool area. The stairwell on the 2nd floor also hinders movement.

P R O G R A M A R EA A N A LYS I S Square footage and relative size of program areas: using the published drawings and/or your on- site sketches, compute the total square footage of the facility, determine the approximate usable size of each of the major areas (i.e., administration, food services, classrooms) and their occupant capacity. Demonstrate these using color-coded floor plans. Calculate significant statistics that will be useful in the planning of your thesis project such as: ratio of dining space to kitchen space, sq. ft. per person, number of diners, etc. Based on these, you will be able to develop your own space standards and avoid relying on generic standards. AESTHETICS Overall, the color palette was earth tones of browns, grays, golds, and off-white. There is a lot of natural light coming into the hotel lobby by the tamarind tree, which is in clear view and part of the hotel concept. Slotted vertical wood breaks natural light from entering other public spaces on the first and second floors of the hotel. According to one of the websites (Architizer) I used to gather information for the case study, it broke down the materials and vendor of the materials used in the project. I believe the design was successful in achieving the design concept, although I wasn’t familiar with it at first, but the more I obser ved the materials and layout, especially on the 1st, Mezzanine, 2nd and 4th Floor where the pool is, I could see the layout fell in line with the design concept that the designer intended.
Although the natural sunlight seeping through the wood par titions is par t of the concept, it does give the some of the public spaces a ver y dark appearance and it doesn’t look like there are many light options in these areas, with high ceilings and only recessed light fixtures for nighttime.
The dark-colored walls in these areas add to the darkness in the room, which perhaps is something that
was not successful.

D E S I G N E VA LUAT I O N – E V I D E N C E - G AT H E R I N G & R E S EA R C H Research Questions Addressed During Evidence-Gathering & Research: 1.
To research a hotel that uses a fashion designer as inspiration for design with a similar design aesthetic
Arize Hotel is not a hotel inspired by a fashion designer, however, there are similarities in the design aesthetic that I hope to include in my thesis project such as the materials used at Arize Hotel. 2.
To research the needs of affluent travelers who stay at hotels
Arize Hotel is designed for Japanese expatriates in Thailand for business. The hotel is great example of how a hotel that considers the needs of affluent travelers and it can be seen in their attention of their Japanese-influenced “Engawa” concept, and different suite sizes to accommodate long term visits and amenities that facilitate long-term stays. 3. To research green design aspect of the existing building and how the approach minimizes the harmful effects of construction projects on human health and the environment at the site and neighborhood Arize Hotel design through my research did not incorporate any green design aspects into the design of the hotel, such as materials, site location, energy use, water use, amongst other green design aspects that could be considered; however, the hotel design did incorporate greenery observed on the 4th floor, central courtyard and throughout the guest floors.

D E S I G N E VA LUAT I O N – I N T E RV I E W Interview(s): Interview at least one primary or secondary user of one of your case study facilities. Interviews may be conducted by telephone or email if necessary. Prepare a list of questions beforehand so you are organized and can identify what information you are seeking from the interviewee and contact them beforehand). Remember to ask open-ended questions rather than yes/no questions. Be sure to include the questionnaire(s) with the responses at the end of the Case Study and identify the interviewee(s) by name and title. If you cannot arrange an interview with someone associated with one of your Case Studies, you may interview an appropriate person (primary user or employee) related to a similar facility. I will update the interview details once I hear back from the staff at Arize.

To research a hotel that uses a fashion designer as inspiration for design with a similar design aesthetic Hotel Leman Locke is not a hotel inspired by a fashion designer, however, there are similarities in the design aesthetic that I hope to include in my thesis project such as the materials used at Hotel Leman Locke. 2. To research the needs of affluent travelers who stay at hotels Hotel Leman Locke is designed for young, creative professionals who are increasingly nomadic for purposes of their work might like to have an option that combines the best of two worlds from a hospitality perspective: The design-led and convivial atmosphere one often finds in good boutique hotels, mixed with the convenience of an extended stay product. 3. To research green design aspect of the existing building and how the approach minimizes the harmful effects of construction projects on human health and the environment at the site and neighborhood Hotel Leman Locke’s design through my research did not incorporate any green design aspects into the design of the hotel, such as materials, site location, energy use, water use, amongst other green design aspects that could be considered; however, the hotel design did incorporate the use of plants as an addition to the design observed in the café that was added in 2019 (three years after opening).

To research a hotel that uses a fashion designer as inspiration for design with a similar design aesthetic Armani Hotel Dubai is an example of hotel that is like my thesis in that a hotel will be designed and inspired by a particular fashion designer and their aesthetic. Armani was successful in carrying over his unique design aesthetic to the interiors to the hotel, which can be seen primarily in his choice of materials, color scheme, and choice of furnishings. 2. To research the needs of affluent travelers who stay at hotels Armani Hotel Dubai is hotel of affluent world travelers who stay at his hotel for a home away from home. The luxurious material choices, exquisite lighting, hotel location, amenities and proximity to Dubai Mall are all characteristics of a hotel that affluent travelers need. 3. To research green design aspect of the existing building and how the approach minimizes the harmful effects of construction projects on human health and the environment at the site and neighborhood Armani Hotel Dubai is committed to preserving precious resources and creating a sustainable operation that benefits our guests, colleagues, the local community and ultimately, the planet. Their environmental policy follows Emaar Hospitality and Dubai Government exacting codes of practice. Surrounding Density and Diverse Uses (8 points attempted)
INTENT To conserve land and protect farmland and wildlife habitat by encouraging development in areas with existing infrastructure. To promote walkability, and transportation efficiency and reduce vehicle distance traveled. To improve public health by encouraging daily physical activity. REQUIREMENTS OPTION 1. SURROUNDING DENSITY (3–6 POINTS) Locate on a site whose surrounding existing density within a ¼-mile (400-meter) radius of the project boundary meets the values in Table 1. Use either the “separate residential and nonresidential densities” or the “combined density” values.
OPTION 2. DIVERSE USES (1–2 POINTS) Construct or renovate a building or a space within a building such that the building’s main entrance is within a ½-mile (800-meter) walking distance of the main entrance of four to seven (1 point) or eight or more (2 points) existing and publicly available diverse uses (listed in Appendix 1). The following restrictions apply. · A use counts as only one type (e.g., a retail store may be counted only once even if it sells products in several categories). · No more than two uses in each use type may be counted (e.g. if five restaurants are within walking distance, only two may be counted). · The counted uses must represent at least three of the five categories, exclusive of the building’s primary use.

Access to Quality Transit (7 points attempted)
INTENT To encourage development in locations shown to have multimodal transportation choices or otherwise reduced motor vehicle use, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and other environmental and public health harms associated with motor vehicle use. REQUIREMENTS Locate any functional entry of the project within a ¼-mile (400-meter) walking distance of existing or planned bus, streetcar, or informal transit stops, or within a ½-mile (800-meter) walking distance of existing or planned bus rapid transit stops, light or heavy rail stations, commuter rail stations, or commuter ferry terminals. The transit service at those stops and stations in aggregate must meet the minimums listed in Tables 1 and 2. Planned stops and stations may count if they are sited, funded, and under construction by the date of the certificate of occupancy and are complete within 24 months of that date. Both weekday and weekend trip minimums must be met. · Qualifying transit routes must have paired route service (service in opposite directions). · For each qualifying transit route, only trips in one direction are counted towards the threshold. · If a qualifying transit route has multiple stops within the required walking distance, only trips from one stop are counted towards the threshold.

Key takeaways from the semester: •
Based on my research this semester, particularly from my case studies, space planning and aesthetics are important considerations that I need pay attention to for my next semester.
•
I also received feed back from classmates that sustainability is an important consideration which I hope to incorporated LEED-thinking strategies in the design of the project next semester.
•
I received feedback from guest critics reminding me that fabric, finishes and furnishings will be a very important design decision when designing the hotel since I picked a fashion designer as my inspiration/topic for the project.
•
I discovered that the neighborhood is a very important consideration when picking the project site, for many different reasons, such as the target group, and many neighborhood characteristics.
•
While doing research for the project it became evident that the hierarchy of spaces for the main public spaces is a very important design consideration since I will be incorporating many different spaces for different functions (i.e. Retail, Restaurant, Lobby, Rooftop, etc)
