St Andrew Campus students have seen many changes since the merger with Good Shepherd in January this year. The College is proud to carry on the tradition of Lutheran schooling in the Top End, developing a strong sense of community and purpose.

From the Principal

Term 4 – teachers greet it with anticipation and eagerness but also apprehension. There are so many events and happenings, reports to write, assessments to write and mark, and there is no way of thinking – I’ll do it next term.

It is however the time of the year where so many milestones are celebrated.

As a teacher you begin to see your students mature and be ready to move onto the next part of their journey in their schooling, you look back and see the successes that have occurred over pervious terms, and begin to feel that you have contributed to preparing your students move forward.

how many people play such a valuable role in what our school is and stands for.

In shaking the hands of our Valedictorians early this term I was reminded of all the teachers (not just at our school), support staff and of course the role our parents play in shaping the lives and futures of the students who pass through our College.

I would like to take this opportunity firstly to thank all who have been involved in our College this year, who have contributed time and energy into making our community a strong and vibrant community, a learning community, and importantly a caring community. This year we have been touched by illness and sadness, and through it we have felt the care and compassion that comes when people truly care about each other and go out of their way to hold out a hand to help each other through. To you all – our thanks.

I would also like to pause and reflect on all that has been achieved with the work of those in our community. We have held information evenings for students aged 3 to 18 and through these, have had the opportunity to meet and get to know many of you, it is this which strengthens and makes our school such a wonderful place to work.

We have gone on excursions to places like the museum, the courts, the police station, the waterfront and the convention centre. Our students have represented the College at PARRS and DRS events, debating, Pedal Prix, Palmerston Netball, Inter-house and Interschool Athletics and Swimming carnivals, the ANZAC day parade, the Sea Breeze festival, and many others. Students have volunteered in Clean up Australia day activities, travelled to Malaysia on Service trips, to Japan and Germany on exchange programs, undertaken challenge activities in outdoor education camps, camps to Canberra, Sydney and Adelaide, a World Challenge trip, Leadership courses, have

organised house days (or weeks in some cases), donated blood at Red Cross, and our Year 12 students shone at the College Formal and the Valedictory Service, reminding us of just how far and how much they grow and develop while at the College.

Others have demonstrated their passion for learning at Presentation Evenings, back-pack design days, ARTiculate, the Year 12 Drama performance – Cage Birds, Personal Project exhibition, the College Enrichment program, Questacon Science program, Year 7 Poetry recital evening, musical recitals, and have dressed up as pirates, superheros and ninjas for Book week.

For all these, and the many others that have occurred, a list too long to publish here, we can be thankful for all that we have been given and continue to receive.

So much of what schools do across the world is similar; what makes us unique are the students, parents, staff and friends

Beyond the Classroom

Year 9 Camp It was a fantastic camp. The activities were lots of fun and I loved swimming in the pools. I kind of enjoyed the walk but next time I will carry less weight. I enjoyed the final swim at Florence Falls.

Matthew Brustolin Camp was a fun experience that allowed up to show teamwork and hang out with people you don’t know. Instead of just talking about yourself you talk about others.

Year 1 Excursion

Inter-house Photo Competition

Year 1 students from the St Andrew and Howard Springs Campuses had an excursion on Thursday 27 August to the Berry Springs Nature Park.

Congratulations to the following winners: Life in NT- Ciara Bellis, Portrait - Shayla Fattore, Landscape - Emily Davies. This was a Hughes Day fundraiser, with all proceeds going to Bethany Home, Malaysia. Thank you to all students (and staff) who submitted sensational photographs!

The children had a fantastic time; exploring with magnifying glasses and recording their findings. Experiencing a nature walk with a ranger and learning about the open and closed woodlands amongst other exciting information was a treat.

They were also given a ‘Be Crocwise’ talk with the local ranger and got to see a real life crocodile that was recently caught up stream. The excursion was part of their Unit of Inquiry – ‘Sharing Our Planet’.

Pedal Prix Students had a great time in Murray Bridge for the Pedal Prix competition at the end of Term 3. All participants rode with intensity throughout the 24 hour endurance event, and we hear there were some pretty amazing stacks, some resulting in the closure of the track every now and then. Well done to all Middle and Senior students who participated in the event and thank you to all staff and parents involved. There is a great deal of work that goes on behind the scenes for many months beforehand to ensure our students have such a marvellous opportunity.

Strauss Day Strauss Day was celebrated in Week 2 with many zany activities, such as the hilarious human version of Hungry Hippos on the basketball court. There were many guessing games and a novel game where students had to pick up as many blue M&Ms with chopsticks in 30 seconds. The sausage sizzle, blue ice cups and cupcake sales were again massive hits with our Middle and Senior School students. Well done Strauss!

German/Australian Exchange 2015

Reflections from our German Exchange Students Deciding to spend 2 months in a country as far away as Australia is, can be a big step and a lot of people often decide against it. For me personally to decide to be part of this exchange wasn‘t too hard because I‘ve grown up with flying to South America twice a year but to everyone who thinks about something like this, I can just say: an exchange is one of the greatest experiences you can have. You not only live in a whole different country, but you also make a lot of new friends.

You not only learn how kids in other countries and cultures live but also how different schools all over the planet can be.

With us coming from a public school (there are only 2 private schools in the entire city), it is a whole new experience.

The nature is of course a really big new part for us. Visiting Places like Litchfield,

East Arm or just driving through the bush have been lifetime experiences for me. Also more ‘touristie’ things like Mindil Beach Markets or Fish Feeding have been really exciting. I realised, spending 7 weeks in a country like Australia, how different cultures and people all over the world are.

Paulina Seves Stensbeck Being on a big exchange like this, is probably one of the greatest experiences in life. It´s not just a new country and all the new impressions, but also the completely different culture and the new people. And I found a lot of new friends which is one of the numerous reasons I don´t wanna go home at all.

There are a lot of impressive things I´ve already seen and done here, not at least that we went to Brisbane for 4 days. After the hot(for us) and extremely dry Darwin, it was a cool change to actually see a normal city again and freeze in the mornings.

I was going camping with my guest family, the DeCastro´s (such a lovely family) in Katherine and apart from me having a

chemical burn in my eyes and a damaged knee (don´t worry, that´s how my life works) that was an awesome trip and I got to know the Katherine Hospital! I did a lot of other fun stuff as well but if I´d try to describe my whole time here, this text would probably last forever. But if I should try to describe it really short, I´d just say I will always remember these weeks as one of the best times in my life. I think you can say, you had such a great time, when you don´t wanna leave when it´s almost over.

And I definitely feel that way. I don´t wanna leave, because of so many reasons. The weather, the school, Iced coffee, Tim Tam´s, but mostly because of my friends. I will see them again in winter but for the ones who are gonna stay here in Australia, it´s probably gonna be the hardest goodbye for an uncertain time.

But for everyone who thinks about doing this exchange, I can just encourage you and I am pretty sure, everyone on the exchange this year enjoyed and will enjoy their time a lot. It is such an awesome and instructive experience!

Giving and Serving Then the ones who pleased the Lord will ask, “When did we give you something to eat or drink? When did we welcome you as a stranger or give you clothes to wear or visit you while you were sick or in jail?”

Matthew 25:37-39 Ever since I arrived at Good Shepherd I have been amazed at this community’s generosity to others in need. Each year we support one off special days like Cancer Council Pink Day and Bandanna Day for CanTeen. We have longer term appeals like the World Vision 40 Hour Famine, Salvation Army Christmas Hampers and Gifts of Grace. And on top of all that, individual classes and other student groups also run their own fundraisers to support causes both here in Australia and overseas.

For the last few years we have worked towards establishing a long term whole College service project. We now have a partnership with Bethany Home in Malaysia. Bethany is a school for

intellectually disabled students ranging in age from 4-20. It has around 130 students, of whom 60 live far away from the school and so board in one of Bethany’s six boarding houses. We have started taking a group of our student leaders to Bethany each year to see and experience the work which is done there.

So much of what we take for granted in our schools, things like photocopiers, cameras, even coloured pencils and other stationary, is considered a luxury for them. When our student leaders come back to Good Shepherd they then lead and encourage the whole student body to participate in fundraising for Bethany.

Why do we do give money to others less fortunate? I guess there are a whole range of reasons for this, and they will differ for each of us. We are grateful for what we have and so we want to share.

We don’t like seeing people go without when we have so much. We want to help others to change the situation they are in and lead a better life.

From a Christian faith basis we can add to these reasons that we give from what

has been given to us. Everything we have is a gift from God, to be used both for our good and for the good of others.

We can complain about poverty in the world, blame God and others for allowing it to happen, or we can be God’s hands here on earth doing something about these needs. It is part of our calling as Christians to serve others and to be the means by which God’s love is spread in this world.

Thank you to this community for your generosity, and I know it will continue.

This loving service isn’t just about giving money, it’s also about how we give of our time, give a smile or encouragement, or give a hand in whatever way to whoever needs it. Especially as we lead up to Christmas we think about God’s love for us, what a great gift that is, and having received this love how we in return can respond. Giving and serving helps to make this a better world for us all.

Market Day Congratulations to 3TA, 3HA and 3RF on an amazing Unit of Inquiry. A market day was held at both St Andrew and Palmerston Campuses to understand the idea that consumers’ needs are met through the supply and exchange of goods and services. Students worked together in groups to create goods and services that they could sell to the College community. Bush Tucker Garden The Lions Club of Darwin / Casuarina, in conjunction with Greening Australia came to the Howard Springs Campus on Thursday 17 September to plant a bush tucker garden with Transition and Year 1 students. The students cannot wait to sample the fruits of their labour. Looks like it was a lot of fun!

Father’s Day Breakfast Dads were in for a treat on Friday 4 September with a wonderful breakfast prepared for them at the Howard Springs Campus Junior School. The delighted faces on our young students says it all!

Exciting Unit of Inquiry On Monday 12 October, Year 4 students had the opportunity to experience what a school day may be like in a classroom in a developing country. For the first part of the day they went without furniture and electricity, and only used basic 16  Good Shepherd Lutheran College

writing equipment. Mrs Pokela spoke to the students at Palmerston about her experiences of teaching in New Guinea. For lunch students were offered warm rice to deepen the experience and they reflected on how difficult and uncomfortable it would be to not have access to the things that they take for granted, and how much more they appreciate their chairs and desks, iPads, fans and air-conditioners.

Tower Challenge Students in 7AB took part in a newspaper tower challenge on Tuesday 13 October as part of the Strengths PC Program. It was greatly enjoyed by all participants.

A Message to Our Motorists

Laura Brearley mastered the art of fresh juice and frappe making while raising funds for MS.

Good Shepherd would like to remind all staff, parents and students to take care when driving to any of our College campuses. A number of complaints have been received about speeding motorists entering College grounds, particularly at the Howard Springs Campus. Please adhere to the school zone regulations and carefully watch your speed before fines are issued, or worse, someone is seriously hurt. The safety of everyone is our primary concern. Please remember that we are being watched by members of our community.

Enrichment Program

Social Action

Our STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) students went to the Junior School on the Howard Springs Campus on Friday 21 August, part of Science Week. This launched our STEM outreach program where secondary students will continue the ‘fizzy fun’ once a month with exciting Science and Engineering activities at the Junior School.

Year 11 Humanities students have been very busy undertaking many service projects, raising money for charities. This unit of work is part of their Stage 2 Society and Culture subject. There are a number of causes that the students have supported; RSPCA, NT Food Bank, Shave for a Cure, Red Cross, Pet Rescue, school resources for Bethany Home, donations for an orphanage in Bali … and many more.

Enrichment Program students attended ‘Design Thinking’ workshops for 2 days at the end of Term 3. Guest speakers from various industries showed how concepts can be applied to realworld problems. Some of these sessions were conducted with overseas designers via Skype. Students are learning how to think like Engineers to solve problems on a local and global scale.

On Friday 18 September, students held a delicious morning tea with proceeds going to the Cancer Council. Thank you MLAs Gerry Wood and Nathan Barrett for joining us. Proceeds from a fabulous Natural Wonders hamper raffle will go to Jody O’Shea Orphanage in Bali.

Multi-cultural Fair Year 8 students planned and executed a brilliant Multi-cultural Fair on Friday 4 September. It was a busy and very bright day, being House Colours Day as well.

Students set up highly interactive, inviting stalls; complete with vast arrays of food, activities and currency indicative to many countries on display. The sumo suits were once again a huge hit and dressing up in Kimonos was lots of fun.

NT Training Awards Congratulations to our two finalists, Caitlin Reidel and Hayley Statham who attended the NT Training Awards on Saturday 29 August. This was the 60th Anniversary of the NT Training Awards which started in 1955. Caitlin was a finalist for the ‘VET in Schools Student of the Year’ category and Hayley was a finalist in the ‘School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year’. Hayley was announced runner-up in her category congratulations Hayley! Good Shepherd is extremely proud of you both, well done for all of your hard work and many wonderful achievements! Mrs Boyce (College Principal), Mrs Synnott (Student Pathways Coordinator) and Miss Julia Petersen (VET Liaison Officer) also attended the awards.

Year 12s Last Day

The Class of 2015’s last official day of school at Good Shepherd was Friday 23 October. Students were farewelled with a BBQ breakfast and whole campus assembly. Valedictory Service

The Valedictory Service was held on Wednesday 21 October at the Darwin Convention Centre. The students entered the auditorium in gowns and blue graduating sashes, to the beautifully performed song ‘Lanterns’. 2016 College Captains, Courtney Synnott and Lachlan Brodie read the Bible verses and prayers and Pastor Andrew’s message was particularly poignant.

The Valedictory Address was given by Mrs Jacqui Campbell, a most moving, wonderful speech that will be included in the 2015 Monsoon year book. The Year 12 Address was provided by graduating students, Kathleen Brigden and Emily Walker; another marvellous, memorable speech. A number of special awards were announced, as well as the Year 12 Subject Excellence Awards. The evening concluded with students walking through a guard of honour, created by College staff; a most fitting finale to their graduation.

Music & Arts

Postie Bike Challenge Ebony Maxwell, Year 9 student sang beautifully at the Postie Bike Challenge’s culminating event on Tuesday 15 September at Hidden Valley. 31 riders from New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia rode a late model Honda CT110 Postie bike from Cairns to Darwin via the back blocks.

The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Darwin, Katrina Fong Lim, officially welcomed the group into Darwin and Ebony sang ‘I am Australian’ as the riders concluded their journey, with many wiping a tear from their eye. During afternoon tea, Ebony sang another two songs to great applause with many reluctant to see her go…but she had a bus to catch.

The riders donate all motorcycles to a chosen beneficiary, which in this case is the Rotary club of Darwin South. After

CDU Dance Performance Year 10 and 11 Dance students were invited to perform at CDU’s Open Day on Sunday 23 August. They performed five dances ranging in style from contemporary to musical theatre. A great day was had by all students and the audience was highly impressed with their performance

the bikes have been cleaned up (to get the red dust off), they are sold and the proceeds go to small community groups who are in need of some funding to support their activities. In gratitude for Good Shepherd’s participation, Rotary have offered to donate some of the proceeds to its music department.

Music & Arts

Stage 2 Drama – The Cagebirds Stage 2 Drama students spent many long hours rehearsing and polishing their roles for two marvellous performances of ‘The Cagebirds’ in Week 8, Term 3. A few classes were privileged to see a matinee performance on Friday 28 August, while the evening shows took place on Tuesday 1 and Friday 4 September.

The cast were assessed by SACE moderators during their Tuesday evening performance; a most nerve-racking experience!

Junior School Recital This wonderful event on our annual College calendar was held on the afternoon of Friday 16 October. A marvellous treat for the entire audience and impressive showcase of talent amongst our Junior School students. Thank you musicians for a delightful and memorable afternoon.

Inter-school Tennis Champions Congratulations to Palmerston Campus students who won the Inter-school Tennis Champions Cup on Friday 21 August... by 0.9 points! A very close competition indeed. Well done to you all.

Congratulations Drew Blair on being awarded the NT Junior Male Athlete of the Year.

Drew also received this award in 2014; an outstanding achievement by a very committed athlete. All the very best for 2016!

Congratulations Ryan Otto on being awarded the u13 NTRU player of the year. Ryan has also been selected to represent the NT in the Australian All Schools Athletics Championship in December, for the 100, 200 and 400m. All the very best Ryan.

Congratulations to Ellie Bentley and Bradley Gill; champions for their cross country age groups.

PE & Sports Netball Congratulations to our Year 6 netball team; ‘Ninjas’ on making it to the grand final on Tuesday 8 September. The team played very well and missed out by only one point. Top job everyone, we are proud of you all!

Thanks so much Miss Nalder and Miss Cook for escorting these fine netballers to Katherine and for doing a top job of coaching.

PARRS Rugby Champions Good Shepherd were the proud winners of the 2015 Primary Eels Rugby League Cup for the Palmerston Region. The team beat Bakewell to come through the competition undefeated which was a huge achievement!

Students from Year 4, 5 and 6, both boys and girls were participants in this competition.

The team won the grand final on Wednesday 16 September and represented Good Shepherd in such a positive way; displaying excellent sportsmanship and attitude. Thank you Malcolm Tomes for your commitment to these students. Well done everyone!

Senior School students enjoyed a special, ‘Service Chapel’ on Tuesday 27 October and were delighted to meet the Director of Bethany Home, Pastor Karthik. Bethany Home will celebrate 50 years of operation in 2016 and some of our own College leaders will be visiting the home, with Pastor Andrew in January. Pastor Karthik said he is deeply humbled by the service projects initiated by staff and students at the College, across all campuses that provide much needed funds for Bethany Home. Mrs Boyce was presented with a Mission Plaque by Pastor Karthik.

Student Leaders were also installed at this service by Pastor Andrew and their eagerness to fulfil the duties within each role was palpable. We wish them all the very best for their new leadership roles.
