A Guide to Your Herbal Healing Journey

Medicine from the Earth

Nature is our greatest healer. For me, the garden is where that truth comes alive it’s a place to pause, to breathe, to feel, and to remember the infinite wisdom and generosity of the earth.

Among the plants and trees, in the quiet and the wild corners, medicine grows unnoticed and often forgotten; leaves that soothe, roots that strengthen, petals that comfort the spirit. The garden is not only a sanctuary, but a generous, living apothecary — inviting us to reconnect with the incredible healing power that surrounds us each day, yet slips so easily from memory in this modern disconnected world. It is brimming with stories waiting to be told.

The Healing Garden is my way of honouring that connection; sharing the stories of plants and holding space for nature’s medicine to be remembered and used as it always was, for everyday healing of all the people.

About Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine uses plant biochemistry to heal. It is rooted in traditional knowledge and is increasingly supported by modern science. Overshadowed in the last century by pharmaceuticals, herbal remedies are as relevant today as ever.

In many countries, such as India and China, herbal medicine continues to be a mainstream part of healthcare, used alongside modern treatments. In the West, where modern methods dominate, herbalists can still be found in most countries, each bringing their own culturally unique approach.

In the UK, Medical Herbalists train for four years, gaining both a scientific/medical foundation and a deep understanding of herbal philosophy. Accredited by the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, we combine modern medical knowledge with traditional practice. A blend of new science and ancient wisdom.

Herbal medicine is holistic — seeing the body as a self-regulating system with an innate ability to heal when balance is restored. Diet, lifestyle, and mental wellness are considered alongside the plants themselves, with the aim of supporting the body’s natural healing capacity.

In this context we can use plant medicine to support recovery from most human ailments, or if we are unable to support a specific condition we can support a patient as they undertake other forms of treatment. Please call to discuss your specific needs.

What happens in a consultation?

A herbal consultation is an in-depth review of your health as well as a deep-dive into your health issue. Together we’ll explore your wellbeing to understand the root causes of your concerns, gaining a ‘whole-body’ story.

We’ll talk about your symptoms, of course, but also your full medical history, current medications, supplements, and each of your body systems — even things that may seem trivial or disconnected. This deep exploration builds a complete picture, forming the foundation for a truly personalised treatment plan. Your first consultation will take 45 mins to an hour and is in person.

Further appointments to check on progress will depend on you and your conditionas a general rule we do monthly follow ups which can be online or in person. I will create a treatment pathway for you and send any medicines within a maximum 3 days of your consultation.

What kind of treatment can I expect?

There is of course no standard answer to this question.. The nature of herbal medicine is that is entirely personalised - custom designed for each patient. No two situations are the same.

Most often a treatment will involve some dietary guidance, some suggested lifestyle adjustments and a herbal preparation. The preparation will be a blend of plants expertly selected to meet your precise needs. It might be in the form of a tincture (a liquid format), a herbal infusion (tea) or capsules containing ground herbs. This choice will be guided by your complaint and the herbs we choose.

YOUR HERBAL HEALING JOURNEY

5 guiding principles

This is a very collaborative way of supporting your health - we undertake the journey together and your ideas inputs and commitment are essential to the process. You are the expert on your body and it’s your actions that will help you to heal. My role is to support you make your own choices about how you want to get well and to guide you with expert advice and personalised herbal medicines. Everyone’s health journey is unique and together we will co-create your personal route map.

Herbal medicines are gentle and collaborative, and their effect is usually gradual. For long term conditions we use a rule of thumb that you’ll need a month of medicine taking for each year you’ve been experiencing the condition. BUT this is very variable and depends on a multitude of factors. Given all the right conditions (eg diet, exercise, mental health, general wellness) response can be fast but often the journey can be a gradual process. Some chronic conditions require ongoing treatment and there may be a need for permanent lifestyle changes to maintain your health.

Holistic healing recognises the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Human biology is programmed to maintain balance and health, so our job is to make sure that we create the conditions to achieve that optimal state. Sometimes this needs small tweaks and sometimes it’s a more extensive programme of adjustment.

Healing is a multi-faceted process and illness is complex. Modern medicine often focuses on pharmaceuticals as a ‘silver bullet’ to treat illness. Sometimes this works and is truly amazing and often life-saving, but in some cases a more diverse and gentle approach can be beneficial. In holistic medicine we use a combination of methods, and these are personal and guided by what feels right for you. We may use a variety of approaches including diet and lifestyle adjustments as well as herbal medicines. We may also decide that other therapies would be complementary (eg homeopathy or physiotherapy) and I can advise and guide you on this.

All living things on this planet are part of one astounding ecosystem. We are all interconnected by complex natural systems that allow us to survive. Plants provide us with everything we need for life, including medicinesthe chemistry they make in their bodies happens to match with processes in ours. Miraculous . So holding the plants with respect and gratitude as we work with them is deeply important to the process.
