Transit Hub - ARCH 508 - Professor Gregory Crichlow
Lawrence Transit Hub is a project focused on designing a bus stop and mixed-use building in downtown Lawrence, Kansas. My design provides a space for all members of the community to come together to use this building. This building provides protection from the weather for people waiting for the many buses that stop here, as well as provides retail spaces, a coffee shop, free public restrooms, and ample indoor/outdoor space to pass the time since some of the wait times for the bus are lengthy. This studio also focused on creating detailed sections of various building connections.
Lawrence

Our site is located in Lawrence, Kansas, at the downtown corner of Vermont Street and 8th Street, which is currently a free short-term parking lot. This parking lot is one of numerous in the area, so the loss of these 36 spots should not be detrimental, especially since many people are not even aware of its existence. In addition to the numerous other lots located in close proximity, there is a multi-story parking garage across the street from the site, which is also free of charge. The site is located one street left of Massachusetts Street, which is considered by many people to be the busiest, most pedestrian-friendly street in the area, making this site a prime location for a mixed-use, multi-modal transit hub, with specified spaces for bus docking, electric car share ports, bicycle storage, parking, and repair, micro mobility docking, offices, grocery, and a public storefront.

Growing Quindaro is a project focused on designing a community space for the residents of Quindaro, Kansas to enjoy. I chose to design a Community & Garden Center to provide a space for the members of the area to gather, learn, and grow healthy food to enjoy. The site has a significant grade change of approximately fifteen vertical feet, so rather than infilling the land, my design utilizes this preexisting slope by placing a multi-story building with a multitude of walkout patios at their respective grades. This multistory building, as well as the land around it, acts as a common point between many historical beauties within the area.

The floor plans include necessary flexible spaces for the community to use as they need, such as a pop-up vaccination clinic, space to hold community events like yard sales or farmer’s markets, or a safe, quiet space for important meetings. This design also includes a branch library equipped with computers and printers, a coffee corner for early mornings, staff offices, and a garden center for the local community, especially the youth, to learn about healthy habits and growing their own produce. The large garden provides the residents a dedicated space to grow food and the center provides a postal drop-box. There is also an added stop at the corner of the building along the public bus route for added accessibility to neighboring areas like Kansas City.

plan view of structure & building placement section of site with natural forces and surrounding impacts view from river of all elements, stacked dimension created by deleting spaces from a solid mass floor plan of community building Wandering Through Layers is a project created by combining four separate, smaller projects (structure, community building, community garden, and garden keeper’s home) into one cumulative project. The community building began as a solid mass and areas of varying dimensions were deleted from this large block to create voids that later acted as rooms within the building. This abstract approach at creating space by creating voids allowed for quirky spaces I would not have normally included within a community building’s design. Different design strategies can produce vastly different results within the same project; this abstract method has taught me to think outside the box when I am designing a space. It has also encouraged me to try new approaches to designing spaces, as well as to seek every avenue and method of design. This creates unique designs and keeps many options open for future project development.

rendering of structural elements rendering of community building entry plan view of garden diagrams of site impacts and garden programming The location of a site poses challenges like noise, wind, solar, and views. These factors played an enormous role in the layout of the building plan, as well as the rooftop garden. The vegetable garden area needed to be located on the south side of the roof, since Lawrence, Kansas is in the northern hemisphere. Harsh winter winds come from the northwest on this particular site, so I located a forest on the northwestern corner of the roof to provide protection to the rest of the garden.

Haven - ARCH 509 - Professor Chad Kraus
Haven is a product of the DirtWorks Design-Build Studio. I was fortunate enough to have to opportunity to participate in designing this 1335 sq ft net-zero house for the national Solar Decathlon Competition. This house sought to demonstrate the best practices for the design and construction of sustainable, net-zero energy homes for future architecture and design students, community partners, and the broader community. The narrow footprint of the home is relatively easy to naturally light, significantly reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. The slope of the roof was carefully chosen for the optimal angle for fixed solar panels on the south-facing portion of the gabled roof. The protective and well-insulated north facade is free of openings that might contribute to energy loss during the large number of heating degree days, while the south facade is characterized by large glazed surfaces, protected by overhangs or louvers, to take advantage of passive solar heating while avoiding overheating in the summer. Although this particular house is no longer being built, countless hours were poured into researching, designing, and putting together cocnstruction documentation for this project.
