I have been active as a painter since graduating with an MA in Painting from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (2022). Various collectors and individuals have acquired my work.
I specialise in oil painting that leans on painting methods from the 16th to 19th centuries. The Flemish painters Theodoor Rombouts, Jacob Jordaens, and Peter-Paul Rubens are important because of the build-up of their paintings. In these works, a monochrome brown or grey underlayer, often drawn with brushes and indicating the light values, serves as a basis for the subsequent layers and remains visible in the final result.
In addition to this, the subject matter is painted from the sketchbook and repertoire; rather than from perception. This allows complex representations to be made coherently. The construction of several distinct layers brings clarity and the subject matter becomes more prominent.
The mavericks of the 20th century are also important to my work such as Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Alice Neel, and Balthus. I regularly invite people into my studio to pose - occasionally a pose from art history precedes this - often the subject dictates the pose. The pose arises by chance in the break when a model is going through an unguarded moment. I have a deep interest in pre-modern forms and I see these, like the body, as expressions of ways of thinking.
