SYSTEM Feed intakes will vary, depending upon the stage of growth or reproduction, and the changing needs of the individual. If Level-Grow, Stud Prep 14, Re-Leve, Mare-Care or the Stallion Plan are fed above 8 lbs/3.6 kg per head per day, no additional Stamm 30 is needed. However, if 3 - 6 lbs/1.3 – 2.7 kg is fed, 1.1 lb/0.5 kg of Stamm 30 should be fed alongside to maintain nutrient density. If less than 3 lbs/1.3 kg is fed, then feed 2.2 lbs/1 kg of Stamm 30. When enough good quality grass or forage is available to provide sufficient calories (energy), then feed 2.2 lbs/1 kg of Stamm 30 alone.

Stamm 30

®

Stamm 30 is a highly concentrated source of essential proteins, with patented vitamins, minerals and yeast designed to supplement all classes of horses when additional calories (energy) are not called for. It can be fed alone to fast growing foals to control body weight and growth rates, and to support yearlings out at grass that are in good body condition and don’t need to be carrying extra weight as they grow and develop.

It is also suitable for supplementing gestating mares out at grass post-weaning from the middle of their second trimester (week 20 of their pregnancy onwards) through to their last trimester of pregnancy to take care of the key nutrients they require at this stage. Barren mares can also benefit from this maintenance diet.

Stamm 30 is manufactured in an ‘easy to use’ pellet for increased digestibility and uniform dispersion, when mixed with other feeds. It is incorporated as an ingredient into Level-Grow Mix, Level-Grow Pencils, Mare-Care, Stud Prep 14, Re-Leve and the Stallion Plan for nutrient continuity within the stud range. It can be used to ‘top-dress’ Level-Grow, Stud Prep 14, Mare-Care, Re-Leve and the Stallion Plan when feeding intakes are low (less than 3.6 kg /8 lbs per day) – see table on pages 2 and 3.

zinc, and manganese) have a slow release mechanism and as they are bioavailable, the body can absorb them much more easily. After 6-8 hours at pH 5.5, 100% of calcium and 98.66% of magnesium has been released.

We updated our formulations in March 2018 to incorporate the new calcium source combined with other key minerals and Vitamins A, C, D, E and K. A specifically designed yeast culture has been incorporated for increased microbial activity. This proprietary yeast source provides extremely high levels of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, for more efficient fibre digestion and maintains favourable digestively related bacteria counts in the hindgut. It also supports increased absorption of significant minerals (copper, phosphorous, and zinc) and enhances protein utilisation.

Stamm 30 also has an inclusion of E-max Ester, a natural form of Vitamin E that is transported quickly and retained in tissues approximately twice as long as synthetic forms.

Current research in several species, including horses, shows that natural Vitamin E is 2-3 times more potent than a synthetic source. As increased demands are placed on horses during the breeding season, mares, stallions and youngstock can all benefit from the incorporation of natural Vitamin E in this product.

FEEDING AND MANAGING GROWING HORSES IS A BALANCING ACT BETWEEN ACHIEVING A DESIRABLE LEVEL OF GROWTH AND THE PREVENTION OF DEVELOPMENTAL ORTHOPAEDIC DISEASE.

IT IS UNNECESSARY TO GREATLY INCREASE A MARE’S ENERGY INTAKE AFTER SHE IS PRONOUNCED IN FOAL, BUT BETTER TO ENSURE THAT SHE RECEIVES ADEQUATE QUANTITIES OF KEY NUTRIENTS.

Level-Grow™ Mix and Pencils

Research studies have shown a relationship between the glycemic nature of feed and the incidence of skeletal disorders, such as osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) in young horses. High-glycemic feeds are those that produce a large blood glucose response post feeding, such as cereal grains and molasses. It appears that the normal bone formation processes in young horses are being disrupted by the elevated blood insulin concentrations post-feeding following the consumption of a diet rich in starch and sugars.

Glucose is necessary for the life function of a horse. Horses in the wild eat high-forage diets that contain very little sugar.

When horses eat forage, the bacteria in the large intestines break down the plant cell walls and produce volatile fatty acids as a by-product of this fermentation. These volatile fatty acids produce glucose. Horses make glucose from fibre fermentation, but it is a more steady production of glucose that does not cause large fluctuations in their bloodstream. However, due to smaller pastures and higher athletic expectations, today’s young thoroughbreds are often fed concentrate feeds that are high in starch and sugars. It is not the glucose by itself that causes the potential problems, but the resulting insulin. Glucose increases the production of insulin, which is an anabolic hormone that sends the glucose to the muscles and liver to be stored as glycogen.

In foals, hyperinsulinemia may affect chondrocyte maturation, leading to altered matrix metabolism and faulty mineralisation of bone. OCD lesions occur on the articular cartilage, which is the cartilage at the end of the bones that protects the joints.

The skeleton starts as cartilage, so if there is a problem in the maturation of that cartilage, it can set the stage for lesions to develop. Not all young horses are affected, but some are more sensitive to high levels of glucose and insulin than others.

IN YOUNG HORSES, THE KEYS TO SUCCESS ARE ASSURING THAT THE DIET IS CORRECTLY BALANCED, THEN REGULATING FEED TO OBTAIN A SAFE, STEADY GROWTH RATE.

was associated with an increased incidence of OCD. Glycemic responses measured in the weanlings in this study were highly correlated with the glycemic index of the feed, but the bodyweight and condition of the weanling and the mare were also considered to be possible factors. Based on those results, it would be prudent to feed foals concentrates that only produce a lowglycemic response 2-4 hours after eating.

There are thought to be four basic causes of OCD, and affected horses usually have a combination of these: > Genetic predisposition > Rapid growth > Nutrition and environment > Trauma, and the role of exercise and overload Nutrition is one area that can be manipulated, so Level- Grow has been formulated with this in mind. Designed to be fed like a conventional stud feed, it is available in a mix or cube form, and uses carefully selected ingredients like alfalfa, soya hulls and sugar beet (‘super-fibres’) that produce only a minimal glycemic response following digestion. By using this breakthrough in research, high levels of soluble carbohydrates have been replaced by fats and ‘super-fibres’ as alternative energy sources, and consequently, post weaning, Level-Grow would be the sole source of concentrate feed given to weanlings to carry them through to their yearling year until growth rates start to level off.

Formulated, using oil and fibre for energy rather than starch and sugar makes Level-Grow a ‘softer’, more forgiving feed.

Backward foals can cope with the feed without compromising an immature skeleton, and mares that tend to carry too much condition during gestation respond well if they are maintained on Level-Grow. The higher fibre level suits a larger mare that is inclined to get too heavy throughout her pregnancy, making it easier to control her bodyweight, particularly approaching foaling. The lower cereal and higher fibre levels mean that this product can be useful for yearling being prepared for sale if they don’t need too much conditioning or muscling up – it helps to keep some fillies looking more ‘feminine’ and slows down the conditioning on some colts that could get too ‘bulky’.

Mare-Care Mare-Care is a specifically formulated diet for broodmares during late pregnancy and lactation. Body condition can be a significant factor affecting mare reproductive performance as mares maintained in moderate body condition cycle earlier in the year, require fewer cycles per conception, have a higher pregnancy rate, and are able to maintain pregnancies better than very thin mares. A body condition scoring system usually ranges from 1 to 9. A mare at the bottom of the range is emaciated and a mare at the top of the range is obese.

Using this system, research has determined that a mare in a condition score of less than 5 may not have enough stored body fat to support efficient reproductive performance. Those mares are more likely to skip a breeding season than mares with a condition score of 5 or 6. This is especially prevalent in mares that are 15+ years of age.

DIVIDED INTO THREE SEPARATE STAGES:

Early Pregnancy > The foetus does not grow at a constant rate throughout the entire eleven months of pregnancy. It is very small during the first five months; even at seven months, the foetus equals only about 20% of the foal’s weight at birth

1. Early pregnancy, from conception through seven months of pregnancy. Barren mares and pregnant mares without foals by their sides fit into this nutritional category.

2. The last trimester of pregnancy, from seven months of pregnancy through to foaling.

3. Lactation, which generally lasts for five or six months after foaling.

The nutrient requirements for these three stages differ markedly and adjustments should be made in the mare’s feeding programme to accommodate these differences.

The most common mistakes made in feeding broodmares are overfeeding during early pregnancy, and underfeeding during lactation.

CORRECT NUTRITION IN THE BROODMARE CAN HAVE AN IMPORTANT EFFECT ON THE SUBSEQUENT HEALTH OF HER PROGENY, AND THEIR EVENTUAL ATHLETIC SUCESSS.

> At this stage in pregnancy the foetus equals less than 2% of the mare’s weight and its nutrient requirements are low compared with the mare’s own maintenance requirements > It is unnecessary to greatly increase a mare’s energy intake after she is pronounced in foal, but better to ensure that she receives adequate quantities of key nutrients by using good quality forage to meet energy and protein requirements, and adding supplemental minerals and vitamins in the form of Stamm 30®

Provides a natural source of Vitamin E. Natural Vitamin E is retained in tissues for longer periods of time, creating a reservoir that allows it to be instantly available when the horse needs it most – in times of stress or during periods of confinement. Due to modern management practices, including early breeding dates, mares may not be receiving adequate Vitamin E nutrition through rations composed largely of hay and grain and limited access to fresh pasture. Mare-Care will help to increase circulating levels of Vitamin E, which may positively affect fertility.

Contains a properly balanced ratio of Omega-3 and Omega- 6 fatty acids.

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are necessary for the production and distribution of hormone-like substances which increase the chances of a successful pregnancy, as mares are more likely to carry their foals to term, and the foals are more likely to have higher birth weights. These findings suggest that mares with a history of abortion may benefit from nutritional support with Omega-3 fatty acids. Mare-Care provides supplemental Omega-3 fatty acids, which can give many reproductive advantages as research suggests that they can optimise conception rates and support fertility. Fertility studies have shown that the follicles grow faster, forming more vigorous embryos in

Late Pregnancy > After seven months of pregnancy, the foetus begins to develop rapidly. At this point, its nutrient requirements become significantly greater than the mare’s maintenance requirements > Digestible energy (DE) requirements only increase about 15% over early pregnancy. Protein and mineral requirements increase to a greater extent. During the last four months of pregnancy, the foetus and placenta combined retain about 77 grams of protein, 7.5 grams of calcium, and 4 grams of phosphorus per day > Trace mineral supplementation is very important during this period since the foetus stores iron, zinc, copper, and manganese in its liver for use during the first few months after it is born. The foetus has developed this nutritional strategy of storing trace minerals during pregnancy because a mare’s milk is quite low in these elements >

If the pregnant mare becomes fat, she should be given a feed that is more concentrated in protein and minerals so that less can be fed per day. This can be achieved by using low levels of Mare-Care top dressed with Stamm 30® (see table on pages 2 and 3).

Omega-3-supplemented broodmares. These fatty acids can be passed from the dam to the foal through milk, so supplementation of the mare can provide for the foal as well. Supplemented mares produce richer colostrum, which could jumpstart the health of their foals to have a stronger immune system.

Contains BioMos to improve mare health by neutralising bacteria, such as E-Coli and Salmonella.

Bio-Mos is a source of mannan oligosaccharide, a five carbon sugar complex derived from yeast cell walls that is not absorbed by the digestive tract. It has the unique ability to bind with pathogenic bacteria and simply carry them out of the horse’s body. Bio-Mos has also been shown to support the horse’s immune system. Studies have shown that the inclusion of Bio-Mos in broodmare diets optimises colostrum quality, as their foals have higher IgG levels in their blood giving them added protection against pathological organisms.

A BROODMARE’S FEEDING PROGRAMME SHOULD BE

Lactation > After foaling, the mare’s nutrient requirements increase significantly, with a particular need for glucose in milk production. On average, they experience a 44% increase in their energy requirements. During the first three months of lactation, mares produce milk at a rate equal to about 3% of their body weight per day > Underfeeding mares at this time can result in decreased milk production, loss of body weight and condition, and compromised reproductive efficiency > Calcium and phosphorus are the minerals that should be of primary concern > Feed intake should be increased gradually during the last few weeks of pregnancy so that the mare is consuming nearly the amount that she will require for milk production by the time she foals > After about three months of lactation, milk production begins to decline and decreases to about 2% of the mare’s bodyweight. Feed intake can be reduced to keep the mare in a desirable body condition. When the foal is weaned, and the mare has hopefully been rebred, the cycle begins again

Gro-Trac® is the first equine growth-monitoring software that allows breeders to compare the growth rates of their stock with those of young horses of similar age, sex and breed from the same country, or from around the world. Over the last 20 years, thoroughbred breeders internationally have been working with scientists at Kentucky Equine Research collecting growth data from their young thoroughbreds.

This has led to the largest set of growth records in the world being collected by KER, and it is added to on a daily basis.

Body weight, wither height and body condition score data has been collected from over 30,000 Thoroughbreds in the USA, England, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India. By using this database of growth records, breeders can quickly assess, track and manage foals and yearlings from birth within the Gro-Trac programme.

The programme features growth curves generated from data collected (weights, heights and average daily gains) from thousands of young horses. Reference curves can include a broad range of growth data (i.e. All Thoroughbred Colts Worldwide) or only a specific group (i.e. English Thoroughbred Fillies or Kentucky Thoroughbred Colts Born

in March). Growth measurements are displayed by way of graphs and bar charts for quick visual assessment.

The innovative graphical design of the data displayed lends physical meaning to once abstract measurements. In each chart, the foal’s measurement is compared to the selected reference group chosen by the user, showing the growth curve for the young horse as well as the reference group.

It gives a very clear indication of how that young horse is developing, and adds a new dimension to young horse management.

Specific farm and group averages can also be calculated and measured against the desired reference group. The information presented in these visuals can include the bodyweight and condition score of the mare. In addition to the charts and graphs, photographs can be imported into the programme to show physical changes from month to month, as well as digital x-rays. Pertinent comments can be added at any time – examples include management issues that may affect growth such as weaning dates, feed changes or illness. These comments can give an explanation

for a slowdown in growth following an illness or if a foal took weaning harder than expected. Symbols signifying the presence of a photograph or comment will appear on the graph at the time each one is entered. These features create an ongoing history of each foal, making Gro-Trac a valuable management and communication tool. Easy-to-read, customised reports can be generated by the programme in Adobe PDF format, which can include height and weight graphs, Average Daily Gain bar graphs, photos, and narrative reports, and can be sent electronically. It makes it much easier for owners who cannot see their horses regularly to be kept abreast of their development with a full and accurate report on how their foal is progressing.

Gro-Trac has a built-in feature that allows the user to export and import data confidentially over the internet. Owners can import and view detailed growth data from remote locations to stay in touch with the progress of their horses, and information on horses from separate divisions of one farm can also be compared together. spread of the data around the average. For example, there is a much wider range for a horse’s body weight than for wither height at a particular age. Body weights can differ by as much as 50 kg, whereas differences in height will be only a few centimetres. A horse that is four percent above (+4%) the reference body weight is not that much heavier than the average, but if he is four percent (+4%) above the reference height, then he is a lot taller.

Traditionally, Gro-Trac has provided an indication of how a horse is growing compared to the chosen reference population by indicating the percentage that the individual differs from the reference values for height and weight. This method is very useful, but it does not take into account the

Furthermore, this method allows horses to be compared regardless of gender and age. The use of percentiles is not a new concept in growth studies and is commonly used in paediatrics. However, this is the first time such a large equine data set has been acquired to create reference populations from which percentiles can be calculated for Thoroughbred horses. Using percentiles, breeders can quickly and meaningfully appreciate how an individual

compares to the population. For example, the population mean or average is the 50th percentile, where half the population are either above or below it. A colt that is in the 90th percentile for height and 75th percentile for weight is taller than 90% of the population and heavier than 75% of the population, so he is well above average.

Many breeders using the software agree that Gro-Trac is an objective management tool. Farm managers can quickly flag youngsters that are experiencing changes in body condition, some of which might be overlooked by even the most observant caretakers. In other instances, the programme validates opinions about a certain horse.

This information can be archived to be useful for reference in the future. This can be particularly interesting with a permanent broodmare band, when patterns and trends will often emerge. The programme is not meant to replace your eye, but it can help to quantify what you are seeing, give reliable comparisons between age groups and genders, and make it easier to aim for more consistent growth rates.

Stud Prep 14 Stud Prep 14 is a multipurpose sweetfeed containing added oil and beet pulp, specially formulated for putting condition onto horses. This feed is ideal for horses bound for the sales ring. It will help them put on body condition evenly, and keep them manageable and level-headed in their work. The high levels of oils and ‘super-fibres’ provide extremely palatable calories, reducing the reliance on starch in the ration. As a result, horses are easier to handle and quickly become sleek and well toned with excellent topline and muscle definition during their sales preparation.

Equi-Jewel is a pelleted high oil rice bran supplement, designed to increase the energy density (calories) of a ration. It can be added to boost calorie intake, or to replace part of the ration to reduce concentrate consumption.

Re-Leve is based on extensive collaborative research carried out

by Dr Stephanie Valberg at Michigan State University and Dr Joe Pagan of Kentucky Equine Research. The ingredients are highly digestible, and are preferred energy sources for horses with difficult temperaments or a nervous disposition. Bodyweights are easier to control in mares and youngstock, and backward foals or yearlings can cope with this type of ration without affecting their development.

It can be useful during sales preparation for young horses showing signs of physitis as it will support their growth without aggravating immature joints, helping to ease pressure on growth plates and maintain joint health and normal skeletal growth patterns.

Yearlings will have a more even and manageable temperament during early handling and sales preparation when fed Re-Leve, and it can also help stressy mares or horses with nutritional sensitivities or allergies. It works very well as part of feeding programmes during box resting after surgery or injuries.

It works well for any horse that can be intolerant to cereal based or high starch rations, and will replace all cereal based concentrate feeds for mares, stallions and youngstock that are needing this type of approach to their feeding programme.

It is designed to maintain digestive health, and to support the immature joints of foals and yearlings as they grow and develop.

The low glycemic nature of the feed means that horses are more level-headed and easier to handle and educate, and youngsters are not adversely affected or compromised in the way that their bone reaches maturation by how they are fed. Re-Leve is an extremely versatile high oil, low starch mix using fermentable ‘super-fibres’ (such as alfalfa, soya hulls and beet pulp) and oil (soya oil) as alternative energy sources.

The distribution of energy sources in the formulation is different to conventional stud feeds. The product maintains it’s energy density by completely relying on oil and fibre rather than starches and sugars for its calories (energy). This ration is free from any cereal grains, is low in sugar and starch and is flavoured with blackcurrant for palatability.

Stallion Plan For the stallion, the year can be divided into two basic phases, the covering season and the off-season. Breeding stallions are often the most frustrating horses on a farm to maintain at optimal body condition; some become too lean at the height of the breeding season, while others remain heavy no matter what. By providing a carefully balanced diet alongside an appropriate exercise plan and monitoring weight regularly, a stallion can be kept trim all year long. Stallions vary greatly in the amount of exercise they give themselves; some are naturally more sedentary than others. The anxiety surrounding the breeding shed may prevent some of them from finishing meals. Once an ideal weight has been achieved, every attempt should be made to keep that weight static. Obesity predisposes stallions to laminitis, insulin resistance and soundness problems (particularly of the hind legs, which is reflective of the strain placed on them during breeding), and possibly heart attacks, often caused by aortal rupture. Extremely overweight stallions are also thought to have lowered libido.

Equishure is a unique supplement that supports intestinal health by helping to maintain a normal pH in the horse’s hindgut. EquiShure is a time-released hindgut buffer proven to reach the target organs.

It supplies an encapsulated source of sodium bicarbonate to the colon and the caecum, and stabilises hindgut pH. TOTAL DIGESTIVE TRACT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT RiteTrac is a scientifically proven supplement designed to support total digestive tract health.

Targeted at both the foregut and the hindgut of the horse, RiteTrac works in two distinct ways by neutralising and buffering excess acid. When fed in conjunction with correct management and forage regimes, RiteTrac helps to maintain optimal conditions in the horse’s stomach by restoring the normal gastric environment. RiteTrac is a granular powder that contains fast acting antacids, mucosal coating agents and a maintenance dose of Equishure to help support the optimum pH in the horse’s hindgut and maintain normal fermentation patterns.

Foals experience a number of changes through their early development that can compromise normal conditions in the stomach. Lack of milk production in the mare, or the inability of the foal to drink frequently enough can mean that some foals may have suckling patterns that are too erratic, and interruptions that may be compounded by stress or infection in the foal.

Some of these situations may include: > Periods between suckling times during early development > Separation from their dam during weaning > The transition from a milk-based diet to one consisting of concentrate feed and pasture > Sales preparation > Changes in routine from a solely grazing situation to increased time spent confined in a stable

During these times foals may have reduced appetite, poor coat quality, loose droppings, develop a pot bellied appearance, and have reduced growth rates. Feeding RiteTrac one month prior to weaning and for one month after will help to maintain a normal gastric environment.

Equally for sales yearlings, normal grazing patterns may be compromised during their preparation, and they are often placed in an unfamiliar and stressful environment. RiteTrac will help to maintain optimum appetite and performance by supporting normal gastric pH throughout the digestive tract. When RiteTrac is included in a meal, normal gastric pH is maintained for up to 6-8 hours allowing the horse to eat normally and feel comfortable.

E-Max Ester & Nano-E™ are both revolutionary natural supplements that provide unsurpassed Vitamin E nutrition to horses of all ages. E-Max Ester is used in designated Saracen diets, whereas Nano-E™ is a water soluble liquid supplement which provides 250 iu of Vitamin E per millilitre, and can be administered orally, or topically on feed. Mares, stallions and newborn foals may benefit from the strategic supplementation of Vitamin E. With the introduction of Nano-E™, there is now a more bioavailable and effective form of Vitamin E with accelerated absorption rates because the product is water-soluble. Broodmares and foals Recent research has investigated the value of the use of Vitamin E on breeding farms. Mares supplemented with Vitamin E have shown optimum passive transfer of antibodies to foals, which ensure the strength of the neonatal immune system. Failure of passive transfer leaves foals susceptible to septicaemia and bacterial infections. In a study conducted at the University of Connecticut, researchers found that mares supplemented with Vitamin E had higher Relative bioavailability

Stallions Vitamin E has been linked to maintaining libido and semen quality in stallions. In addition to this, one of the most important functions of Vitamin E in stallions is cell membrane protection. Sperm motility is commonly used as an indicator of oxidative stress. Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant, reacts with free radicals to protect the cell membranes and the fatty acids in those membranes that are crucial to fertilizing capacity.

Stallions suffering sperm motility problems may benefit from supplementation with Nano-E™. Higher circulating levels of antioxidants may create an environment to support the survival of progressively motile sperm.

There is also increasing evidence that Vitamin E supplementation may aid fertility in mares. Due to modern management practices, including early breeding dates, mares may not be receiving adequate Vitamin E nutrition through rations composed largely of hay and grain.

Supplementation will increase circulating levels of Vitamin E and may maintain optimum fertility, especially in mares with reduced uterine defence mechanisms. Pregnant mares with a history of placental dysfunction may also benefit from Vitamin E in the last 2-4 weeks of pregnancy.

This supplementation can reduce the potential for hypoxic damage to the newborn foal. Foals suffering hypoxic damage are also candidates for high doses of Vitamin E.

antibody concentrations in blood and colostrums than control mares. The concentrations of foals reflected those of their dams, with foals from supplemented mares having increased levels of antibodies. Mares known to have poor quality colostrums, be poor milkers or have had failure of passive transfer of immunity in previous years should be supplemented with Vitamin E for at least a month pre and post foaling.

Nano-E™ is available in 450-ml and 3.8 litre bottles containing a minimum of 250 iu per ml of Vitamin E as d-alpha-tocopherol. Nano-E™ should be administered orally or top-dressed onto dry feeds at the time of feeding. For best results, the supplement should be fed soon after removal from the bottle.

Luminance™ CONDITIONING SUPPLEMENT Luminance is the ‘next generation’ in equine conditioning supplements.

DuraplexÂŽ

BONE MINERALISATION SUPPLEMENT

DuraPlex is a proprietary blend of specific proteins, minerals and vitamins scientifically proven to reduce bone demineralisation, and to support bone mineral density and bone area. Studies at Kentucky Equine Research showed positive changes in bone quality after just one month of supplementation.

DuraPlex was also shown to prevent the natural demineralisation that occurs when access to free-choice exercise is restricted, such as when young horses enter a training environment. Total confinement in stables during box rest due to injury, or after surgery, can lead to bone demineralisation and a reduction in bone density. DuraPlex supplementation helps to lessen the loss.

DuraPlex positively impacts orthopaedic tissues so they possess greater ability to withstand training. Using radiographic photometry (Figure 1), a sensitive and noninvasive method of monitoring change in bone mineral content, KER observed bone changes in a group of growing Thoroughbred horses that were exercised and unexercised.

Two-year-old Thoroughbreds supplemented with DuraPlex and given access to daily turnout but no formal exercise showed greater bone growth and bone mineral content (Figure 2) than control horses. Among the exercised horses, DuraPlex supplemented horses showed less demineralisation than control horses (Figure 3).

JOINT HEALTH SUPPLEMENT Equine athletes are prone to injury.

Certain injuries happen quickly, but others are a result of cumulative wear and tear. Hyaluronic acid (HA) plays a vital role in maintaining the health of connective tissue and optimizing normal joint function. Synovate HA may assist with supporting the joints of young horses during sales prep, so that they don’t ‘lose their action’.

Synovate HA provides horses with a safe, easily absorbed form of sodium hyaluronate. The core ingredient, HA, is a naturally occurring substance found in various connective tissues in the horse’s body. HA contributes significantly to the maintenance of cartilage health and elasticity, joint fluid viscoelasticity, and lubrication of the entire joint mechanism.

Athletic demands on the horse reduce the natural reservoir in the joint capsule, which leads to reduced viscoelasticity in the joint fluid, so affecting joint function.
