EDITOR'S NOTE SAP stands united with the global community in opposition to the unjust war in Ukraine and we remain committed to supporting efforts to restore peace. Working with our global colleagues and partners, we have helped organize efforts to provide humanitarian aid and technologies to support mission-critical organizations in Ukraine and in neighboring countries.

The crisis is also a stark reminder that our continued reliance on fossil fuels can exacerbate geopolitical conflict. In the short term, these conflicts amplify uncertainties, create unstable business conditions, increase supply chain risks, and slow economic, environmental, and social progress. In the long term, the conflicts amplify the threats posed by climate change, increasing waste, and deep divisions in our social fabric.

Therefore, we must break from the status-quo with speed and fortitude.

And we must do it together. In this issue, we share a number of strategies, technologies, programs, projects, and collaborations designed with purpose in our hearts and sustainability on our minds to build a world that not only runs better, but also continuously improves people’s lives.

Our fundamental belief remains that the new Economics of value creation is when businesses realize the needs of profit and planet, both working hand in hand in the service of people.

SUPPORTING REFUGEES SAP has been working with The National Red Cross Organization and UNHCR to support refugees from Ukraine. We have contributed €3+ million in humanitarian aid, and over 4,000 employees have volunteered to provide housing to refugee families.

We have also rolled out a dedicated onboarding effort to attract refugees with suitable job opportunities.

Going Beyond Single-Use Plastics In 2019, SAP launched the “Beyond Single-Use Plastics” project with the goal of completely eliminating single-use plastics from SAP-run spaces, events, and customer- and employeefacing items. In June 2021, the project concluded.

SAP EMPOWERS HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES SAP’s sponsorship of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is part of a bigger effort by SAP to foster the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, as well as provide guidance on ways to enrich these universities’ cybersecurity curriculums.

Upon high school graduation, selected students will be introduced to a computer science curriculum, including computer information systems and cybersecurity, in preparation for a career in cybersecurity.

MOMENTS O Sunil Geness | Johannesburg, South Africa​​ Moment of Service testimonial: 2 years ago I became involved in the rehabilitation of the James and Ethel Gray Park, a 36 hectare green space in Johannesburg. At the time, the park was in a general state of decay and dereliction. ​ Fast forward 24 months and the City of Johannesburg, has recognized this rehabilitation program as a best-practice in South Africa. ​ ​ From a state of absolute dereliction, the park has just been rated as the number one picnic destination in Gauteng (a province with more than 6000 parks), by the Getaway publication.

The transformation of the park, in the midst of a global pandemic, has also enabled a “safe harbor” for the over-stretched frontline workers of Johannesburg. ​ ​ The impact of the work undertaken has prompted the City of Johannesburg to enter this project as an entrant into the United Nations Public Service awards, 2022.​
