• SOUKYA, Dr. Mathai’s International Holistic Health Centre, Bangalore is a residential medical institute where the focus is on health promotion, early intervention and the treatment of illness.

• The center is spread across 30 acres of land parcel,

• It is organic farming land with different intermediate spaces to for dedicated activities.

• The site situated between two major roads of Bangalore- soukya road and koralur road.

2. Activities in Soukya-

• They are a residential integrative medical facility.

• They treat people with a holistic approach.

• Doctors from different systems of medicine monitor the treatments, which are done by well-trained therapists.

• They practice many Systems of Medicine including Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy.

• Complementary Therapies such as Yoga, Acupuncture, Reflexology, Acupressure and several kinds of therapeutic massages (Integrative Medicine & Complementary Therapy).

• Most of the activities are done in open in landscape area.

3. Spatial arrangement-

The center has many programs divided on a land parcel of 30 acres.

a. Entrance and admin b. Residential rooms c. Spa and ayurvedic center d. Yoga and meditation place. e. Recreational spaces f. Organic farming.

The medical center, the administrative center, the yoga hall, the therapy center, the dining hall, and the four residential clusters are all built in the South Indian traditional style, making use of as many local and handmade materials as possible.

• The zonning is done with resoect to climate analysis and the circulation of the place. The intital buildings are the the ones with temporary activities and which require easy road access like the therapy places, entrance adminetc.

• The middle zone becomes the recreational zone with all the relaxing activities like yoga, meditation etc.

• The last northernmost zone is the private zone with residential quaters and spa.

• The westernmost corner is green zone where organic farming is done which is used in the cafe.

RESIDENTIAL SPACES-

There are different types of cottages provided for the visitor depending upon there need and categorised intoDeluxe room (85sqm.)

ENTRANCE-

• At entrance the straight tree-lined drive helps to focus the mind and bring clarity of thought and intention.

• The ascending lamps along the drive help to elevate the person to a higher level.

• The three fountains at the end of the drive symbolize the mind, body and spirit.

• The lighting of lamps removes negative energy and the resonance of the handcrafted bell also helps to clarify energies.

ADMIN AND MEDICAL CENTER-

• The admin and medical center are at the end of entrance road built in square shape.

• Admin has reception, Accountants room, clerks room, directors rooms and all the administrative work.

• Medical center has doctors cabin, Equipment’s room and waiting room. This close to entrance for convenience of on call doctor and in case of emergency

DINING ROOM BETWEEN SOUKYA GARDENS-

• Built in between the garden it has creepers around it shading the dining room naturally.

• The food is 65 percent prepared from the organic plants planted around the dining room.

• It is in rectangular shape and thatch roof which keeps it cool during sum mers.

• The semi open seating is also provided to experi ence the view of garden while eating.

YOGA ROOM-

• Yoga room is semi open room with circular design and bamboo thatch roof.

• It has low height wall which can act as a seating space.

• 25 percent of the yoga room has wall from behind to as a backdrop for the instructor and block the south side sun rays.

• The room is supported by the six columns.

LANSCAPING AND ORGANIC GARDEN-

• The entire grounds are planted with flowers, flowering shrubs, and trees and attract many colorful varieties of butterflies and birds.

• Signs provide those who use the trail with the names of the various shrubs and trees that can be seen along the way.

• Organic vegetable gardens and fruit orchards enhance the beauty of the grounds and provide the kitchens with much of the food prepared for meals.

• A 2.2-kilometer walking and jogging trail encircles the whole property and runs along the inside perimeter of the surrounding fences.

INCLUSIVE THINGS-

1. Environmental psychology-

Spaces are designed keeping in mind what effect it will have on human mind. Water body or pond is present on the site at regular intervals as sound of water calms the mind and cools the breeze around it.

2. Building material-

• All the materials used are natural material which are procured from radius of 30.

• All the nine buildings are design in south Indian style to enhance the local culture of a place.

3. Individual space design-

• The design of each building is very efficient and well thought of.

• The circulation, services and common areas are properly organized.

4. Use of landscape-

• Even the types of trees planted are studies upon and gives different feeling in different areas.

• The landscapes are designed to soothe the human mind.

5. Passive Strategies-

The center has used many strategies for people to feel comfortable in the place. The light, ventilation, spaces, interiors, material and roofing are all well thought off.

THINGS NEED TO BE AVOIDED-

1. Master planning-

The plan just flows along the site and very less or no thought is put into the positioning of each building. It scattered all along the site.

2. Mixed use-

They have tried to put too many users at one places and provided them with various activities to be consider at one visit.

3. Location-

It is opposite to school which can make it noisy during day time.

4. Residential planning-

Since the case study is about ayurvedic center it has different cottages designed for different users according to the user. But rehab center will have one type of user.
