I consider architecture to be a tool. A tool that can be used to shape the world around us on a grand scale. I am interested in finding architectural solutions to issues within the fabric of our society. The way I address these issues is in direct correlation with my life experience and undestanding of the world at the time, and as my views evolve so does my interpretation of what the solutions might be. This translates into my work. I believe at different stages in my life I will address the same problem and the same brief in a different way. In this regard, my architecture is a reflection of myself and my values, and I would like it to be percieved as such.

Circuit City

The Rig

A reaction to rising electronic waste by proposing an electronic market for second hand electronics. Modular units raised on pillars, developed into a system that can grow, shrink and relocate to create the infrastructire for an electronic market.

6

A social programme created to provide shelter and jobs for the homeless in London. The scheme proposes a furniture workshop that employs the homeless whilst providing shelter and skills training to make them self sufficient.

The scheme title is ‘Circuit City’, and is a response to the mounting issues of electronic waste affecting the UK and the planet as a whole. The scheme encourages re-use, recycling and re-sale of second hand electronic equipment by providing a space designed to host a market. The premise of the design concept is based on a Mat building system. A series of raised modular structures that can be adapted to any site, and hosts the ability to grow individually within the units themselves and systemically across the given site. The material used to facilitate this system is ‘Cross laminated timber (CLT),’ due to its prefabricated quality and the ability for relatively faster assembly on site. The scheme has three layers of functionality: the space underneath the units which hosts the market, the storage units within the units themselves and the roofscape which is occupied by solar panels that provide power to individual units in a self contained grid. 6

Across the globe the problem of electronic waste persists. Often times transported from one end of the globe to the other as a method of disposal, namely from more affluent nations to less affluent nations. When these electronic waste products arrive in these countries they are scavenged by the poor and stripped for precious metals and parts for money. The stripping and scavenging process creates a host of health problems amongst the population, mostly children, due to the various chemicals and fumes released. The concept of an electronic market is to tackle the problem at its source by encouraging re-use and recycling of electronic goods that would otherwise end up in landfill and in these countries.

The scheme is proposed on a site with great transport links. The site has existing structures in the form of three unused gasometers.

The ground level of the market is vibrant with activity. The top level, the units themselves, contain storage spaces whilst trade is conducted beneath within the spaces created by the various independent units connected and interlacing, creating a system capable of growth.

As time progresses and word spreads about the market, its growth rate increases. What starts off as small concentrated units within a vast site, gradually transforms into bigger clusters over time until the entire site is occupied.

The Rig Homelessness is a problem that affects cities worldwide, and London is no exception. It is an issue that is growing in magnitude year upon year, due to many factors, unemployment, alcohol, drug abuse, runaways etc. One way to tackle homelessness is to deal with the source via policies and programs. My proposal hinges on recruiting homeless people, employing and training them in an industry that reclaims wood from various sources around the country and turning them into furniture. This proposal has the double edged effect of re-use, reclamation and recycling of natural resources, whilst simultaneously providing work and shelter for some of the homeless population. The design concept is influenced by an oil rig out in the ocean that utilises a shared space for work and shelter. This notion of shared work and living is the main theme of the scheme.

Design concept

Unit stacking analysis and tests

The design concept is based on the idea of modular construction, using smaller independent units to create a larger system. The concept requires smaller units with varying functions, that can be assembled. The structure is a steel framed. The design process was heavily reliant on experimentation, and finding the best configuration for the structure. Using models and diagrams, the various options and potential configurations are displayed. Some of the criteria that governed which configurations were suitable are stability, accessibilty, aesthetics and natural light.
