HELLO SANTEE! This month marks one year since I stepped into the role of President and CEO of the Santee Chamber of Commerce, and I am grateful for everything this year has brought. I have had the privilege of meeting so many inspiring people, visiting businesses as they opened their doors, and hearing the stories of those who have been part of Santee’s foundation for decades.

Each conversation has reminded me just how special this community is. Santee is built by hardworking business owners, dedicated residents, generous volunteers, and community leaders who truly care about where we live, work, and grow.

This past year has been filled with learning, growth, connection, and a deep commitment to moving our Chamber forward. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our business community and to continue building relationships with the people and businesses that make Santee feel like home. I want to sincerely thank my team, our Board of Directors, and the many community friends who have supported me, encouraged me, and shown up for the Chamber in countless ways. I also want to thank my family for believing in me, encouraging me, and supporting me through the long days and busy seasons that come with building something meaningful. Your patience, love, and support have meant more than words can say.

As we look ahead, I am excited for a fun-packed summer full of opportunities to come together and celebrate all that Santee has to offer. CHAIR'S MESSAGE As Chair of the Santee Chamber Board of Directors, I am proud of the momentum we are building and the work being done to strengthen our business community, support local families, and invest in Santee’s future.

The Santee Chamber is more active than ever, creating meaningful opportunities for businesses to connect, grow, and be recognized.

These programs are more than events on a calendar. They are part of a larger effort to bring people together, promote local businesses, and keep Santee moving forward.

The Santee Chamber Foundation for Good is another important part of that mission. Through the Foundation, we are supporting local students and recent graduates who are choosing a path in the trades. These hardworking young people are building futures, learning valuable skills, and preparing to contribute to our community. Supporting them is the right thing to do, and it is an investment in Santee.

Our recent annual Poker Tournament was a great example of what happens when our community comes together. Business owners, residents, Chamber members, and local leaders joined us for a fun night with a meaningful purpose. Every hand played and every dollar

Blooming from Home THE STORY OF

CHRISTINE'S

FLORAL DESIGNS For many people, the image of a successful business begins with a storefront, a sign above the door and customers walking in from the street. But in Santee, success often looks different. Sometimes, it begins in a garage. Sometimes, it grows between school drop-offs, late nights, family responsibilities and the quiet determination to keep going.

For Christine Winchel, owner and designer of Christine’s Floral Designs, her business is more than a floral company. It is a story of resilience, motherhood, creativity and community.

Christine’s Floral Designs is based right here in Santee, operating from Christine’s home garage.

Before flowers, coolers and design tables filled the room, Christine had long been surrounded by the sparks, metal, and welding tools of her husband Jesse’s own business beginnings, which first took shape in an earlier home garage. Today, the family garage has taken on a new life as the heart of Christine’s Floral Designs.

From everyday arrangements and special occasion deliveries to weddings, corporate events, sympathy flowers, design classes and large-scale celebrations, Christine has built a business rooted in talent, hard work and heart.

Christine first entered the floral industry in high school, working as a driver at Flowers of Point Loma. Her boss became one of her earliest mentors, teaching her floral skills and the value of a strong work ethic. After her shifts, Christine stayed to practice small arrangements, eventually designing bud vases, church pieces, tropical designs, leis, floral crowns and event florals. Over time, she moved through different flower shops, gaining experience and shaping the creative style that would later define her own business.

When Christine became pregnant with her son, Jace, the physical demands of event floral work became harder. Large installations, long hours and climbing ladders were no longer realistic in the same way. At the same time, she was trying to provide for her family while still being present for her children. After both she and Jesse lost the support of their mothers, Christine knew she needed to build something that allowed her to be both a business owner and a mom. Working from home became more than a dream. It became a necessity.

Christine began taking on weddings and events, with Carlton Oaks Golf Club becoming one of her early stepping stones into the wedding industry on her own. She used the experience she had gathered from years in floral shops and event companies and slowly turned it into a business.

Then COVID hit. Events stopped, work slowed and Christine found herself homeschooling her children, helping with family responsibilities and trying to figure out how to keep her business alive.

Around Mother’s Day in 2020, the Santee Chamber of Commerce organized a small group of flower orders for Christine to help bring business back her way. For Christine, that moment became pivotal.

It was not just about selling flowers. It marked the beginning of a trusted relationship, partnership and lasting connection with the Chamber.

“The support from the Santee community has meant everything to me. There were moments when I did not know what the future of my business would look like, and having people believe in me made all the difference,” Christine shared.

Today, Christine’s at-home floral shop is a picture of resourcefulness. Her workspace began with a folding table in her garage and grew with added equipment, including a cooler, a sink and additional tables for larger events. Her two-car garage now serves as the heart of her business, where flowers are processed, arrangements are designed and creativity comes to life.

Behind each arrangement are early mornings, late nights and the careful work customers may never see. There are nights when Christine is in the garage working at one o’clock in the morning.

Busy weeks, like Mother’s Day, can stretch to 16 or 18-hour days. The workload can be heavy, costs are high and the pressure of keeping a small business moving forward is constant.

But building from home also gives Christine something incredibly valuable: time with her children.

She can design in the morning, take Jace and Isabelle to school, work during the day, help with homework, make dinner, attend sports or family activities, put the kids to bed and then return to the garage to keep working. It is not a conventional schedule, but it allows her to build a business around her family instead of away from it.

That balance is part of why her story speaks so clearly to other at-home business owners. Running a business from home can offer flexibility, but it also comes with real challenges. Christine does not have the walk-in traffic of a retail storefront. Flowers are perishable, and unused inventory can quickly become a loss.

Rather than let extra flowers sit, Christine often brings floral arrangements to grand openings, local events and community celebrations, including the Chamber’s ribbon cuttings and Morning Buzz events. For her, it is a way to share her work, support others and spread beauty throughout the community. It has also become part of what people know and love about her. Christine shows up.

She contributes. She brings something personal.

"Building this business from home has allowed me to do what I love while still being present for my family. It has not always been easy, but every arrangement, every event and every connection has helped me grow."

That community presence has opened doors, including one of Christine’s most meaningful connections to Santee: her work with the Santee Veterans Memorial. After being asked to create a floral display for the memorial, Christine continued to provide flowers for Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies. With a grandfather and brother who served, being able to honor veterans through flowers has become one of the most special parts of her business.

Christine’s impact also reaches younger generations. For the past four years, she has taught floral design classes at local schools, mainly Sycamore Canyon, working with fourth through sixth grade students. She has also taught adult classes, private parties and workshops at places like Santee Coffee Corner and Mission Realty. While the classes are not a major profit center, Christine sees their value in the joy they bring.

Christine’s business has continued to grow through word of mouth, social media, community involvement and Chamber connections. Most recently, Christine was recognized through the Santee Chamber’s 2026 Business Awards, naming Christine’s Floral Designs as Santee’s 2025 Favorite in the retail category. It was a meaningful accomplishment for an at-home florist competing in a space often associated with traditional storefronts.

Christine’s work is also featured on the cover of this issue, where she is pictured with the special 250th floral design sponsored by the City of Santee. Created in celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the design was featured at the Santee Chamber’s Heroes Celebration on April 23, 2026, as a tribute to community, service and patriotic spirit.

For Christine, the recognition is not just about an award. It is a reminder that persistence matters. Not every day is easy. Not every week is successful. The costs of flowers, supplies, events and operations continue to rise. A brick-and-mortar location is still a dream, but it is an expensive one. For now, Christine continues to build from home, taking on weddings, events, corporate arrangements, centerpieces and custom floral work while remaining open to partnerships and new opportunities.

"My advice to anyone starting a business from home is to choose something you truly love. There will be long days and hard seasons, but passion is what keeps you going when things get difficult."

Christine never imagined that starting as a high school flower shop driver would one day lead her to becoming an award-winning designer, business owner, teacher and community partner. But step by step, arrangement by arrangement, she built something meaningful.

Her story is exactly why this issue of Santee Magazine matters. Across Santee, there are talented business owners working from garages, spare rooms, kitchen tables, home offices and backyard studios. They may not have storefronts, but they have vision. They may not always be visible from the street, but they are part of the fabric of this community.

Christine’s Floral Designs is proof that a business does not need to begin in a commercial space to make a lasting impact. Sometimes, it begins with a folding table, a used cooler, a garage full of flowers and a business owner who refuses to give up.

And to every at-home business in Santee: the Chamber sees you. Your work matters, your story belongs here, and your impact is helping shape the future of our community.

MY HOMETOWN DEAN VELASCO

OLD-SCHOOL HOSPITALITY. SANTEE COMMUNITY, FRONT AND CENTER. Dean Velasco built his life in Santee long before opening Deano’s Pub East. Today, as the owner of Deano’s Pub East and the 2025 Santee Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, he has created a space where the community can come together and connect.

Before becoming a business owner, Dean spent over 25 years working at Qualcomm, building a successful corporate career that allowed him to support his family and travel the world. Despite the stability, he felt the pull to do more.

Having grown up in the restaurant industry, working alongside his father, who owned restaurants for over 50 years, Dean always knew he wanted to build something of his own.

That vision first came to life with his first business venture, Riverwalk Grill.

Founded in 2017 alongside his wife, Erika Velasco, it quickly became a local destination and gave Dean his first step into entrepreneurship. Not long after, an unexpected opportunity led him to purchase a struggling bar in La Mesa, which he transformed into the first Deano’s Pub. At the time, Dean was still working full-time at Qualcomm, balancing both careers as he grew the business. After a few years of success, he made the decision to leave his corporate job and fully commit to building something of his own.

While his first location was in La Mesa, Dean always had his heart set on Santee.

After moving to the community in 2002, he quickly became deeply involved.

From coaching ASA softball and AYSO soccer for over 16 years to helping develop youth programs at Sportsplex, Dean built lasting relationships throughout Santee.

Dean finally got the opportunity to open Deano’s Pub East in Santee in 2024. What sets it apart is its atmosphere. Dean intentionally created a space where people feel welcomed from the moment they walk in. Whether it is someone visiting for the first time or a regular stopping by after work, the goal is the same, to create a place where people feel comfortable, connected, and part of something.

After opening the Santee location, the business quickly exceeded expectations, generating in just a few months what his La Mesa location had made in a year.

Deano’s Pub East has become a true gathering place for the community. From hosting mixers and local events to supporting first responders and fundraisers, giving back is a core part of Dean’s mission.

Looking ahead, Dean continues to think about how he can further contribute to the Santee community. His vision includes bringing a larger entertainment and live music space to Santee, creating even more opportunities for people to gather and connect.

At the heart of it all, Dean’s success is rooted in people. Known for always showing up for the community and never knowing how to say no, he has built more than a business. He has built something that brings people together.

Heroes Celebration Off Broadway Live | April 23, 2026 A night of celebration, community, and delicious food!

On Thursday, April 23rd, the Santee Chamber hosted its annual Heroes Celebration at Off Broadway Live in Santee. Teachers, first responders, business owners, and community leaders gathered to celebrate the lasting impact that the quiet dedication of community service has on the city of Santee, particularly its effect on those in need. Off Broadway Live provided a beautiful venue for the event, paired with a well prepared three course meal and a generous selection of beverages. Old friends reconnected, new acquaintances were made, and the room buzzed with energy as the program began.

In celebration of our country’s 250th birthday, the event was themed “All American Heroes.” In partnership with the City of Santee, Christine’s Floral Designs, Santee Favorites Winner for 2025, created a stunning 250th themed floral display for the occasion. The Santee Chamber’s very own Stephanie Wooding, owner of Best Day Ever Weddings and Events, served as the event’s Master of Ceremonies, bringing energy and professionalism to the program. The evening concluded with a heartfelt celebration of the individuals who make a lasting impact in Santee, as we honored the heroes of our community and proudly recognized Person of the Year, John Hossick. We invite you to join us in celebrating the honorees named for their outstanding contributions to our community. Their dedication continues to shape and strengthen Santee in meaningful ways. We look forward to gathering again next year to recognize those who make a difference every day.

Recently named “Santee’s Favorite Animal Service,” the business has also earned statewide recognition, as co-owner Devon Julian was honored as California Small Business Person of the Year by the Small Business Administration—one of the nation’s highest accolades for entrepreneurs.

Each year, the SBA highlights exceptional business leaders during National Small Business Week, recognizing individuals who demonstrate innovation, resilience, and community impact. This year’s 53 honorees, including Julian, have been invited to Washington, D.C. for official ceremonies this May.
