We have an exciting calendar underway, including our Business Awards Night in March at Sycuan Casino Resort, the Santee Heroes Celebration in April at Off Broadway Live, and a show-stopping 2026 Santee Street Fair this May. Alongside these signature events are our mixers, monthly programs, ribbon cuttings, business and government luncheons, and committees, creating countless opportunities to connect and get involved.

So much is planned, and we’re excited to continue supporting our business community and the City of Santee as we grow stronger together. CHAIR'S MESSAGE

Hello Santee,

As I step into my new role as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Santee Chamber of Commerce, I am filled with both humility and excitement for our community. I am truly honored and grateful to work alongside so many incredible local business owners, and alongside Amanda Daugherty as our President & CEO. I know I am in great hands.

I am proud to be part of this community. I was born and raised right here in the City of Santee, attending Cajon Park Elementary and Santana High School. To now be a business owner and a leader within this community is something I take immense pride in.

My “why” is deeply rooted in my upbringing. My father, Jim Buksa, a Vietnam veteran, brought our family to the community of Santee in 1971. From a very young age, he instilled in me the importance of service, of helping others, giving back, and supporting our veterans. Those early lessons shaped who I am today and continue to guide how I do business.

When I meet new business partners, my first instinct is always the same: How can I help you grow? That mindset has been a cornerstone of my success and one I bring with me into this role. I am excited about what this year has in store for us. My vision is centered on growth and creating meaningful value for every Chamber member. I am honored to help lead our local business community and deeply thankful to all the business owners in Santee who have entrusted us by becoming members of the Chamber.

This year, I will need your help. Together, we can grow something special. If you are a business owner or entrepreneur and want to be involved in shaping the future of our community, I would love to have you aboard. It is truly an honor to serve you.

Sincerely,

THE STORY OF KARL BURRIS

A GRANDSON'S PROMISE BECOMES WISE OWL FIT

Walk into Wise Owl Fit on any given morning and you’ll find something rare: a gym where no one is trying to look younger. Instead, you’ll find adults in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s working with kettlebells, rowing machines, and sleds, training like the athletes they are. At the center of it all stands Karl Burris, a West Hills High School graduate who returned to Santee with a vision shaped by watching his grandfather transform.

Opening March 21 at Carlton Hills Plaza, Wise Owl Fit represents something new for East County: a gym designed exclusively for adults 55 and older, where clinical expertise meets athletic training, and where taking it easy isn’t on the menu. The gym will take over the space currently occupied by Expressions Dance and Movement Center as they move into a new location to continue serving Santee’s youth.

“My grandfather got a decade younger. Not from a new medication. Not from a procedure. From movement.”

The Moment Everything Changed

For as long as Karl can remember, his grandfather was “disabled.” Type 2 diabetes. More than 25 medications. Injecting insulin multiple times daily. He spent his days in a recliner, Karl’s childhood image of what aging looked like. “That was my picture of an older adult,” Karl recalls. “Someone who was essentially retired from life itself.”

Then, in his grandfather’s 80s, something changed. A caregiver began visiting, not a physician, not a specialist, and she did something radical: she got him moving. Simple exercises. Nothing fancy. Just consistent movement. The transformation was remarkable. His energy returned. He could bathe himself. He walked without assistance. His mood lifted. His mental sharpness improved. Within weeks, a man who had seemed destined for decline was living again.

But Karl also saw what was missing. The exercises helped, but they were basic and they came late. How much more could his grandfather have achieved with proper, progressive training? How many years of independence were lost to that recliner before anyone thought to challenge him physically?

“I kept thinking, where was the medical system?” Karl says. “Why couldn’t expert physicians accomplish what this caregiver was able to do? And why didn’t anyone start sooner or push him harder?”

That experience led Karl to pursue physical therapy, a career where he could help others access the same transformation he witnessed in his grandfather, earlier and with the expertise to push them further.

From Mobile PT to a New Vision

Karl earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2015 and became board certified as an orthopedic clinical specialist. In 2020, when COVID 19 made traditional clinic work complicated, he launched Live Life Physiotherapy as a mobile practice, bringing rehabilitation directly into Santee homes.

For five years, he’s worked with older adults throughout East County, helping them recover from surgeries, reduce fall risks, and rebuild strength. He’s also led group fitness classes at Lantern Crest Senior Living, where his 92-year-old grandmother participates. But he kept seeing the same frustrating pattern.

“Our healthcare system is designed to treat disease, not prevent it,” Karl explains. “There’s a billing code for insulin. For the complications of diabetes. For the hospital stay after a fall. But there’s no billing code for a comprehensive exercise program. Yet that’s exactly the intervention that could have given my grandfather years of independence back.”

“My parents live here in Santee. I’m building this for them—and for everyone like them.”

Challenging What “Senior Fitness” Means

Wise Owl Fit isn’t a typical gym, and it isn’t typical senior fitness either. The research Karl relies on challenges conventional wisdom. Older adults are typically underloaded, not overprotected.

“The risk of not exercising far exceeds the risk of injury during properly supervised exercise,” Karl notes. “Sitting in a recliner is the dangerous choice. Challenging your muscles, your balance, and your cardiovascular system is what keeps you independent.”

One area where this matters most is bone health. As we age, bone density naturally decreases, a condition called osteopenia that can progress to osteoporosis. The result is bones that fracture more easily, turning a simple fall into a life altering event. But research shows that impact and power training stimulates bone growth and helps maintain density. At Wise Owl Fit, building stronger bones is part of the programming, not an afterthought.

Karl also understands why so many people arrive at retirement having neglected their fitness.

“During your working years, life gets in the way,” he says. “Careers, raising kids, caring for aging parents, exercise often falls to the bottom of the list. But retirement opens a door. You finally have the time to invest in your health. The question is whether you’ll have a place that meets you where you are and helps you build.”

A Bridge from Rehabilitation to Fitness

What makes Wise Owl Fit unique is its integration with Live Life Physiotherapy, which will operate in the same building. For many older adults, the gap between finishing physical therapy and joining a gym feels insurmountable. They’ve rebuilt strength after a surgery or injury, but they’re not ready for a traditional fitness environment, and most gyms aren’t ready for them.

“Live Life Physiotherapy can serve as a bridge,” Karl explains. “Someone recovering from a hip replacement, managing a neurological condition, or working through chronic pain can start with one-on-one clinical care to build foundational strength and movement skills. When they’re ready, they transition into Wise Owl Fit’s group classes. Same building. Same philosophy. Familiar faces.”

Members will also have access to a Fitness Tracker, a personalized dashboard where they can monitor key metrics over time. Grip strength, balance scores, walking speed, and other indicators of functional fitness will be tracked, giving members clear evidence of progress and helping coaches adjust programming to keep them advancing.

Building Community, Not Just Bodies

Beyond the equipment and programming, Karl emphasizes something the research increasingly supports. Community matters. Social connection is as important to healthy aging as any exercise protocol.

“We’re not just building a gym,” Karl says. “We’re building a place where people belong. Where showing up matters. Where your friends notice when you’re not there.”

As a Santee Chamber of Commerce board member, Karl has deep roots in the community he’s serving. His parents live locally. He attended West Hills High School. This isn’t a business venture from an outsider. It’s a homecoming with purpose.

“The intervention that transformed my grandfather’s life shouldn’t be a lucky accident. It should be available to everyone.”

The Vision Forward

Karl’s grandfather has since passed away, but his legacy lives on in every detail of Wise Owl Fit. The owl mascot represents what Karl believes aging can be: a time of accumulated wisdom paired with maintained physical capability.

“Decline is not inevitable,” Karl says. “The research is clear. How you age is largely within your control. But you need the right environment, the right programming, and the right community to make it happen.”

His vision for Santee is simple and ambitious: a community where older adults Move with Strength, Age with Resilience.

MY HOMETOWN

SARAH WOOD

OLD-SCHOOL WORK ETHIC. MODERN MINDSET. BUILT RIGHT HERE IN SANTEE

For Sarah Wood, Santee has never been just a place to live — it’s home. It’s where she was raised, where she built her family, and where she has spent her life working alongside the people and neighborhoods that shaped her.

Sarah is the owner of Allegiance Heating & Air Conditioning and co-owner of Absolute Duct & Chimney Cleaning alongside her husband, David. Together, their companies reflect what matters most: Neighbor-first. Done-right. Guaranteed.

Her story in the trades started close to home. Sarah grew up watching her father run what began as a true one-man operation — built on grit and word-of-mouth. Over time, under her leadership, that foundation grew into something much bigger.

Today, Sarah helps lead two thriving service businesses rooted in the same principle: Old-School Work Ethic. Modern Mindset.

Allegiance has a long-standing history in San Diego County, and for Sarah, carrying that forward means community, craftsmanship, integrity, and followthrough. You may recognize Allegiance through community events like Santee Concerts in the Park or the Santee Chamber Veterans Golf Tournament, reflecting a commitment to show up both in homes and in the community.

What makes this story even more meaningful is that it’s truly a family effort. Sarah and David work side-by-side, their daughter Kylie is involved in the next chapter, and Sarah’s mom, Gena, is part of the team — making it a rare multi-generational family business built right here in Santee.

Beyond her companies, Sarah is deeply committed to strengthening the trades for the future. She serves on the State Board of Directors for the PHCC of California and is past president of PHCC San Diego, where she helped bring HVAC trade education back to life in the region. Today, those efforts added on a thriving two course HVAC program to an already established four-year plumbing apprenticeship, with more than 130 students preparing for meaningful careers.

Sarah also serves on the board of the Santee Chamber of Commerce and is known for giving back through constant involvement, support, and civic engagement.

Outside of work, Sarah is most proud of her role as a mother and grandmother. In many ways, her story reflects the spirit of Santee itself: proud of its roots, grounded in old-school values, and always moving forward with heart and a modern mindset.

5 WAYS TO BE HEALTHY IN SANTEE

LOCAL STYLE

Living healthy doesn’t have to mean doing more — sometimes it simply means looking around. Santee is full of local businesses and community spaces that support wellness in meaningful ways. Here are five simple ways to prioritize your health while supporting the place we call home.

1. Breathe Easier with a Healthy Home with AbsoluteDuct&ChimneyCleaningInc.

Your health starts indoors. Absolute Duct & Chimney helps families improve indoor air quality through professional duct cleaning, chimney services, and HVAC support. Removing dust, allergens, and buildup from your system can make a noticeable difference in comfort, energy, and respiratory wellness.

Sarah's Santee Spark: Your home should feel like a sanctuary — clean air is part of that foundation.

2. Strengthen Your Mindset with Local Wellness Members

Wellness is an investment in yourself, one that supports not just how you feel today, but how you show up for life every day. Prioritizing your health can mean more energy, better balance, and a stronger connection between mind and body. From natural, plant-based wellness solutions offered by Aloe Life International, Inc., to the holistic, restorative care provided by Santee Acupuncture, to the proactive and modern health approaches at The Wellness Co., these businesses are helping our community prioritize balance, healing, and overall well-being. Together, these Chamber members reflect a shared commitment to whole-body wellness and a healthier Santee.

3. Access Quality Care Close to Home – Sharp Rees-StealySantee

Staying healthy is easier when care is convenient. Sharp Rees-Stealy Santee offers a wide range of services including family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, lab testing, and urgent care — all designed to support proactive, coordinated healthcare for individuals and families.

Sarah's Santee Spark: Consistency matters — accessible care encourages people to take action early.

4. Don’t Overlook Your Local Pharmacy – All Care Pharmacy

Sometimes the most impactful support comes from personal service. All Care Pharmacy has been a trusted Santee business for years, offering prescriptions, consultations, and free delivery. Many residents don’t realize they’re there — but those who do appreciate the care and relationships they provide.

Sarah's Santee Spark: Personalized healthcare still exists, and it’s right here in our community..

5. Move Outdoors on Santee’s Trails – Mission Trails Regional Park

Movement doesn’t require a gym membership — just fresh air and a path forward. Mission Trails Regional Park and local bike and walking trails offer accessible ways to stay active, reduce stress, and reconnect with nature year-round.

Sarah's Santee Spark: Exercise should feel like a reset, not a chore.

However you choose to focus on your health — body, mind, or home — Santee offers incredible local resources to help you thrive.

Cheers – Supporting Santee Always,

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) is a public agency serving more than 520,000 residents across East County, including all of Santee. Our mission is to improve community health and wellbeing by investing tax dollars in nonprofits that provide local programs and services, and by partnering with Sharp HealthCare, which operates the publicly owned Grossmont Hospital.

GHD’s recent impact in Santee:

Funding the installation of sunscreen dispensers at local parks with IMPACT Melanoma

Supporting the LIVESTRONG cancer survivor program at the Cameron Family YMCA

Awarding graduating seniors at Santana & West Hills with health career scholarships

Bringing reliable health information directly to Santee via the GHD Mobile Outreach Library

Learn more at grossmonthealthcare.org.

GHD recently welcomed James Sly, a Santee native, as its new Chief Executive Officer:

“Having partnered with GHD for many years through my work at the East County Economic Development Council, I’ve seen firsthand the District’s impact and am looking forward to building on that strong foundation.”

SOCIALIZING SANTEE

CONNECTING COMMUNITY THROUGH EVENTS THAT MATTER

From festive holiday celebrations to meaningful professional development, the Santee Chamber continues to bring the business community together through engaging events designed to connect, educate, and celebrate. Over the past season, members gathered at a variety of mixers, workshops, and community traditions that showcased the heart of Santee and the power of local connection.

Connections Beyond the Business Card

Chamber mixers remain a valuable way for members to connect face-to-face.

The mixers at Jimmy’s of Santee in January and Deano’s Pub East in February provided welcoming, energetic settings where members networked, exchanged ideas, and built relationships, highlighting the important role local venues play in strengthening business connections.

A Sparkling Start to the Holiday Season

One of the season’s most anticipated moments was the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, hosted by the City of Santee. Families and community leaders gathered to celebrate the holidays, while the Santee Chamber joined the fun with a booth where children decorated Shop Santee bags, reinforcing the Chamber’s commitment to community traditions.

Starting the Day Strong with Morning Buzz

For those who prefer networking with their morning coffee, the Chamber’s Morning Buzz offers a relaxed way to start the day. Held every first Wednesday of the month at Santee Coffee Corner from 8am –10am, this casual gathering encourages members to connect, share updates, and build relationships before the workday begins, showing how the Chamber creates opportunities that fit every schedule.

Women in Business at the Chamber

Professional growth took center stage at the Women in Business workshop, where attendees engaged in skill-building, leadership, and meaningful connection. Women in Business events are held every first Monday of the month at either New Life Church or Mission Realty from 4pm - 6pm, reinforcing the Chamber’s commitment to supporting women professionals throughout East County.

Continuing the Momentum

We invite members and the community to join us in future events and initiatives. Visit SanteeChamber.com and follow the Chamber on social media to stay informed.
