GIFT IN WILL PROGRAM

The Orange Tree Society

We established the Orange Tree Society to honour those who decide to extend their support of the College by remembering Santa Sabina College in their will.

Our Orange Tree symbolises wisdom, endurance and generosity. It continues to stand strong and bear fruit, as will your lasting gift.

By informing the College of your intention to leave a gift in your will, you allow us to acknowledge your generosity in your lifetime. This will include VIP invitations, special acknowledgements and a gold plated pin to mark your legacy.

How do I make a gift in my will, and how will it be used?

A gift in your will (also known as a bequest) is an opportunity for you to make a special, tangible and lasting gift that will touch the lives of future Santa Sabina College students. Such gifts are very personal and can be made in a variety of ways to reflect your particular wishes.

A bequest may be in the form of money, real estate, stock, shares, artworks.

These gifts can be made as follows:

• a percentage of the value of your estate

• the residue of the estate: ‘what is left of your estate’ after your family and other beneficiaries have been provided for

• a specified amount of money, shares, insurance policies or property

To find out more please contact Santa Sabina’s Director of Development. All discussions will be kept confidential.

Trudie Rogers (Burton 1968) Orange Tree Society member

‘I loved being a Santa student. In the 1960s, life was changing for women but we were taught we could be what we wanted to be (just improve your maths mark) not what society assumed women should do. That was the start of my awareness of what women can do. Santa Sabina gave me that. It is important to me to leave a legacy to allow other girls, boys and young women to experience all that a Santa Sabina education can give.’

The Legend of the Orange Tree

In the quadrangular enclosure at Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill in Rome, there is an orange tree. According to a legend, in 1220 St Dominic planted the seed from which it still grows. In the 1890s, Mrs Marie Dalglish-Bellasis, an ex-Dominican pupil of Maitland, visited Santa Sabina in Rome.

On hearing of Marie’s Dominican education and of the new school in Strathfield, the Friar of Santa Sabina gave her a plant grafted from the original orange tree in Rome. Marie brought the orange tree back to Australia and it continues to grow and flourish in our grounds to this day.

In recognition of this everlasting connection between Santa Sabina and St Dominic himself, the College established the Orange Tree Society to honour those who decide to extend their support of the College and its mission by remembering Santa Sabina College in their will.
