Stage one will create space for balance, and contemplation, providing opportunities to disconnect from technology with the construction of a new Sports and Aquatic precinct on the Santa Sabina campus. With a triple court indoor facility and basement car park, the building will have dual functionality for sport and school gatherings, seating up to 2000 people. Separating the Sports Centre from the new Aquatic Centre will be Catherine’s Garden, inspired by Catherine of Siena who perceived the way of life and spirituality to be ‘very spacious, gladsome and fragrant, a most delightful garden.’ Mirroring Dom’s Plot, it will be a relaxing place for our students to gather.
n 2024 we will be celebrating our first 130 years of providing exceptional education to girls, boys and young women and looking to realise our new Master Plan. Our thoughtful, innovative and beautiful 25-year Master Plan will bring space, light and modern functionality to the College, all reflecting our Dominican spirit and Catholic faith. Our heritage buildings will be enhanced by modern facilities and spaces that foster curiosity, learning and collaboration. 2
Also, as part of stage one, we will construct a new covered area on the Primary campus. It will be a weather protected area for assembling, circulating down to the oval, with provisions for hopscotch, handball, netball and soccer. The playground area has been conceived as a Rosary Garden in recognition of the journey of prayer and its importance in the Dominican tradition. We are seeking the support of our entire community to help make this Master Plan a reality and provide our students with the best possible opportunities in life. Paulina Skerman College Principal

Chair of our Foundation T
he past few years have proved challenging for all of us in many ways but the unwavering support of the community during this period has allowed us to advance the mission of the Santa Sabina College Foundation. The Foundation aims to raise funds to support academic achievement via scholarships and bursaries, our capital needs via the building fund and endowment which will provide long term financial stability for the College. Our annual appeal funds these endeavours. We were able to offer several named scholarships as well, which are detailed in the report of our new Director of Development,
George Ayoub, in this issue of Impact of Giving. We are delighted that George has accepted the challenge to focus on the philanthropic development of the Foundation. The Foundation is working to award more bursaries as we hope to raise funds to assist families impacted by the prevailing economic conditions. Our fundraising activities include the Slate Tile Restoration Project and the Building Fund. As the College is about to embark on major building works, we will be updating you on the contributions made by the Foundation to these projects. Santa Sabina College appreciates the commitment of our alumni, parents and friends who have supported the Foundation over the past 12 months. It is an acknowledgement of the commitment of the Santa Sabina community to support our Foundation, building a financial asset for the future. Sabina Donnolley Santa Sabina College Foundation Chair

Director of Development Improved facilities
Sports
Donations can go towards building new facilities, renovating existing ones, or upgrading technology. This can create a more conducive and modern learning environment.
Donations can fund sports programs, facilities, and equipment, promoting physical fitness and teamwork.
Scholarships and support Many students face financial barriers to accessing education. Donations can fund scholarships and financial aid programs, allowing more students to attend the school and pursue higher education.
Enhanced educational programs
G
iving to Santa Sabina College can and does have a significant impact on our students, staff and the physical aspects of the College, as well as the community we serve. Donors have a critical role in shaping the future of Santa Sabina, and support provides a positive legacy that benefits our boys and girls. Here are some of the key ways in which giving can make a difference to Santa Sabina College.
Donations can support the development of new educational programs, such as STEM initiatives, arts programs, or co-curricular activities, all enriching the learning experience.
Teacher support Funding can be used to provide professional development opportunities for teachers, which can lead to higher quality instruction and better educational outcomes for students.
Community engagement Santa Sabina College serves as a community hub. Donations can support events and outreach programs that strengthen our ties to the community. 4
Endowments/bequests Donors can establish endowments that provide a consistent source of income for the school, ensuring its long-term financial stability. Becoming a member of the Orange Tree Society is a great way to support the College now and into the future.
Named Scholarships The College has been very fortunate to have the support of parents, past parents, ex-students and the community in providing education for students who may not have had the opportunity to gain a Dominican education. This year these named scholarships include: Sr Judy Lawson OP Scholarship for Leadership – named after our last Dominican Order Principal, Sr Judy Lawson OP, this scholarship is open to a girl who has demonstrated significant leadership within her school and wider community. The Maura Wilcox Scholarship – an ex-student of the College, Maura
along with her sister, Hillary, has been wonderful supporters of the College for many years. This scholarship supported by Hillary Wilcox celebrates Maura’s love of the College, especially the sciences, and is offered to a student in Year 11 who excels in the area of Science. The Veronique Sakr Scholarship – named after one of our students, Veronique, who was tragically taken from us, is awarded to a student who would otherwise not be able to attend Santa Sabina College. This scholarship has been funded by the very generous support of Bridget Sakr and Craig McKenzie along with their business partner Michael Tartak through their business Quartre Café in Strathfield.

She established the College’s first bursary in 1930 when she used the gift of £25 given to her by the Dominican ExStudents’ Association in recognition of her Diamond Jubilee to establish a fund so that a girl could complete her education at a Dominican secondary school. Our two-year scholarship covers 100% of tuition fees and
The Mother M Bertrand Walsh OP Scholarship – is named after a Santa Sabina College pioneering Sister who was the First Prioress of the Dominican Order of Eastern Australia (from 1882) and an outstanding educator of three generations of Dominican students. Mother M Bertrand Walsh OP and Mother M Pius Collins OP alternated terms as Prioress, bravely guiding the congregation for 30 years. Introducing George Ayoub
Director of Development 12
O
ur new Director of Development, George Ayoub, is bringing fresh ideas to his vital new position which is helping to move the College forward. As Director of Development, his job is to build relationships and raise funds to bring muchneeded projects to fruition. These projects will provide facilities and scholarships for current and future generations of Santa Sabina students. For the last seven years George has been our popular Director of Sport and Co-curricular Activities. His change to the field of development is new for us but not new for him – in the past he was, for five years, the Director of Development at Trinity School, setting up their fundraising program from scratch. His top achievement there was raising enough funds to build an underground pool and new gymnasium. ‘My job is to connect with the whole community and encourage everyone to engage in some way, whatever is possible for them individually’, he says. Apart from the Veritas Annual Appeal and raising funds for scholarships, he also has his sights set on several longer term projects: a covered outdoor learning space on the Primary Campus,
improvements to our swimming pool, and ultimately an extensive new sports precinct with state-of-the-art facilities. He has been delighted to find that our culture of giving is already strong – ex-students have been providing generously for scholarships for several years. Business sponsorship is a new avenue George is also looking at for future support. George’s background is as a teacher of History and English and he continues this aspect of his career in 2023 as a teacher of the Year 11 IB subject, Theory of Knowledge. ‘This is a great subject which encompasses all disciplines and where we get to discuss things happening in the world’, he says. ‘Our lessons are very much discussion based – students lead, the teacher leads – either way it’s a very good way of gaining knowledge.’ Well known to many of us is George’s career in Rugby which has punctuated his teaching career and involved high profile professional work for Rugby Australia and Japan Rugby. He was Australia’s top TMO – Television Match Official – also known as the video

referee. Prior to this, he was the Rugby NSW Referees Manager. Already well-connected in our community, George is the husband and father of Santa Sabina students (Barbara Ryan, Class of 1980 and Olivia Ayoub, Class of 2020) and he has a long history with our families having grown up locally, attending St Patrick’s College and remaining in the Strathfield community to bring up his own family. When not at work, George works daily on his fitness, watches Rugby (of course) and is also a volunteer surf lifesaver, rostered every three weeks on a beach on NSW’s Central Coast. In a surprising escape from his sporting interests, George recently completed a Master’s in International Security, focused on cyber security and counter terrorism, which we hope will never be needed! Advancing the interests of our students and community is always at the forefront of George’s mind – give him a call on 9745 0232 if you would like to help him provide the best we can for our students.

T
A collaborative fundraising event
n 2023 the Santa Sabina College Development Office worked with the Parents and Friends’ Association to arrange a day on the golf course. The SSC Golf Day was a community event where our parents and friends of the College came together to enjoy each other’s company, have fun and support the College. Partnering with Strathfield Golf Club was a great way to bring our community together at a first-class venue. Celebrated former golf professional Doey Choi, a College ex-student from the Class of 2017, joined us at tee-off. Over 70 Foundation supporters played golf and enjoyed lunch afterwards. This annual event is not to be missed.
Directory he Santa Sabina Business directory allows the Santa Sabina community of parents, ex-students and supporters of the College the opportunity to advertise their business, service, firm or trade to our community allowing you greater potential for growth while supporting our College. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for as many businesses in our community as possible, advertising spaces that generate funds, provide a service to our community and create an information hub for all in our community.
Benefits of the Business Directory There are many benefits of advertising your business in the Santa Sabina Business Directory. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
