New Floor for BVSC

The Bennett Valley Senior Center will be closed May 2-13 while the carpeting in the Center’s hallway is removed and replaced with new flooring. The new flooring will be installed starting at the front doors and running all the way down to Room 19. We will also be repainting the hallway in the near future. We are very excited for these improvements and hope you enjoy how they brighten up the facility!

Instructor Spotlight Balance and Pilates with Jae Newman Increase your steadiness and balance with Jae Newman! Since 2013, Jae Newman has done a phenomenal job teaching Balance and Pilates classes at the Person Senior Wing. Jae teaches the classes with a solid foundation on balance designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness.

Jae has been an instructor since 2001, and what she enjoys the most about teaching is the students. She loves the “ah, ha” moments, when people do what they thought they couldn’t do. She also likes the relief when students are told that they only need to do

what feels good for them, and they don’t have to sweat and hurt their bodies. One of the greatest compliments she has received from her students include “I don’t feel pain anymore.” Jae is a grandmother of two lovely girls and she brings a playful spirit to her classes, making them fun and non-competitive.

Jae invites everyone to come join her classes and learn to better balance or to move with more grace!

The Sonoma Wine Country Games encourages healthy activity and social engagement for anyone 50+ through education, connections, and the spirited competition of sport, inspiring all to take an active role in determining the quality of their aging experience. Come participate and choose from 20 different sports. The competition runs June 3 - 19.

History In Our Midst New Life for the Train at Howarth Park Spring is here and Howarth Park’s train, the C.P. Huntington Engine #74, is rounding the track with passenger cars of happy families once again.

The engine has been a marquee attraction in Santa Rosa for 46 years. If you’ve been around Santa Rosa long enough, you might remember the original miniature steam engine that was established by “Pop” Lampson in the 1950s. In 1969, the original train was replaced by Engine #74 and the first of what would turn out to be hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of passengers

hopped on board. This past year alone, the C.P. Huntington has made roughly 2,500 laps around the track providing rides for 50,000 passengers.

Beginning in Spring 2017 next year though there will be a new engine! Santa Rosa Parks Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was able to raise the money for a new engine and is now in the process of raising money for a new passenger car that is compliant with American’s with Disabilities Act. Soon everyone will be able to enjoy this great attraction!
