Senior Membership Drive The 2014/15 membership drive is underway - have you purchased your membership yet? To continue our operations, we must leverage resources from a variety of sources. This includes fundraising; volunteer hours, corporate sponsors and participant contributions. Your contribution in the form of an annual senior membership keeps our centers running. By purchasing a senior membership for ($24 individual/ $40 couple) you allow us to provide drop-in programs, lecture and services at an affordable fee. This contribution also helps us to upgrade and replace specialized equipment, mail the “Zest for Life” Newsletter directly to your home and offer discount classes and special events. The Santa Rosa Senior Centers rely on the generous support of our community to provide quality programming and services.

Computer & Technology Lab at Person Senior Wing GREAT NEWS! The computer lab at the Person Senior Wing is opening June 3.

We have ALL NEW computers loaded with Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2013 ready for you. Our computer lab offers participants the opportunity to check their email, work on a project or just browse the web.* The computers will be available during our instructor facilitated lab hours. Our facilitators are prepared to answer the questions you may have been too afraid to ask. Lab hours are open to the public with a $2.00 drop-in fee. The lab can accommodate 12 users; register at the front desk when you arrive.

Instructor Spotlight Introducing Lynn Millar, Walking Instructor Improving your health can be as simple as taking a walk. If you are feeling intimidated by getting started alone, join Lynn Millar, our new walking group instructor.

Lynn will be leading walks from the Person Senior Wing to the surrounding neighborhoods and trails.

Lynn is a walking enthusiast and encourages others to give it a try. As she sees it, “walking is the most fun and healthiest exercise possible.” Lynn is an experienced walking leader. She has led monthly nature walks for the Sonoma County YMCA for almost three years. She chronicles her Sonoma County walking adventures in a blog (at http:// backtowalking.wordpress.com/ ).

In the last four years, she has walked and posted 221 of the most beautiful flat walks in the Sonoma County area. In addition to her writings on walking, Lynn also writes short stories and novels, has had a short play produced at 6th Street Studio and is currently working on a guidebook.

This new Walking Group will help motivate participants to incorporate walking in their everyday activities as well as teach student about the many health benefits of walking.

Around Town Caregiver Support and Memory Stimulation Group at Bennett Valley Senior Center In 2011 the Bennett Valley Senior Center joined Creative Counseling and Primrose Alzheimer’s Living to present a program to lend support to caregivers as well as those living with memory loss. Two support groups meet simultaneously at the Bennett Valley Senior Center; “Family/Caregiver Support Group” and the “Use it or Lose it Memory Group.” These groups are designed to provide support, education, information and stimulation to individuals and families struggling with issues related to memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By running these clinics concurrently, it allows caregivers to bring their family member so that

each enjoys support and encouragement in their appropriate setting.

The Caregiver Support Group helps participants deal with the challenges of being a caregiver that can include stress and decline of physical and emotional health. This venue allows for open expression, exchanges of ideas, and support through this very difficult time.

“Use it or Lose It” Memory Stimulation Group challenges participants to use their mind in creative and fun ways. Through discussion, art, games and other activities, participants keep their mind healthy and make enjoyable connections.

These groups meet the 3rd Thursday of the month 11am – 12pm at the Bennett Valley Senior Center Facilitated by: Karuna Gerstein, MSW, ASW of Creative Counseling.

Become a Park-A-Month Volunteer The Park-A-Month Volunteer Program was created in 2011 to provide an opportunity for Santa Rosa residents to pitch in and help spruce up neighborhood parks, while also providing a feeling of ownership and pride in helping to make the parks shine.

Often neighboring residents get involved at their local park clean-up.

Others like to experience parks in different parts of town that are off their normal path. Beverly Muir and Frank Hervey, Jr, have been attending Park-A-Month events religiously for the past couple years.

“I have discovered that volunteering in the Parks helps me feel more like I am part of the community,” says Beverly. “Going to nine different parks each year gets us up and out into neighborhoods with which we are not familiar, getting fresh air and feeling useful that we were able to help keep the park looking good and keeping trash out of the creeks.”
