Children take a whirl on one of the features of the new playground at A Place to Play Park. Santa Rosa Recreation & Parks was able to bring the playground to A Place to Play last March after receiving a Healthy Play Matching Grant from California Parks and Recreation Society (CPRS) and PlayCore, and was one of just five cities in California to be selected to receive the matching grant.

Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery Lamplight Tours Take a night tour of Santa Rosa’s oldest cemetery to experience dramatic portrayals of some of our town’s early settlers. She utilizes a variety of media in her work including printmaking, digital media, drawing, sculpture and installation. Harp investigates the ephemeral qualities of digital media, color, pattern, and translation between mediums.

MARK BRUDZINSKI, REBECA TREVINO, ANNE SHAHEEN & STEPHANIE BRUDZINSKI: SHADOW OF THE PAST August 30 – October 19, 2016 Reception: Wed., August 31, 4 - 6 pm Artists create art for many reasons. One of the most enticing pay-offs, for those of us who get to experience that art, is our own intense personal reaction. In “Shadow of the Past”, the artists manipulate physical pieces from the past, through assemblage and mixed media art forms. They re-invent and combine materials to create new expressions of emotional, spiritual, visual and tactile content. As the audience, we have the honor of experiencing this enlightened view of their shadowed memories in a private response. Each artist brings their own unique history into the creation of every work. This collection brings together artists of varied backgrounds and styles to present independent perspectives and shine some light on the shadows of the past.

SANTA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY MEMBERS EXHIBITION December 20, 2016 – February 2, 2017 Reception: Wed., January 18, 4 - 6pm The exhibition will feature photographs in a wide variety of styles and subjects including landscapes, nature, travel, journalism and abstracts. Images will be in color, black and white and a combination of both. This will be the organization’s second show in the past five years at Steele Lane. 2016 marks the 40th year as a club specifically devoted to the interests of amateur photographers. Our mem-

Likewise her machine sewn collage pieces stem from stream of consciousness, where she finds that she is one of the participants in a dance between the sewing machine itself, the lines and patterns that emerge, and the applied paper and detritus.

Thea Evensen uses collage, calligraphy and encaustic to make colorful, intimate pieces that fuse images and words. As the surface is built up and then scraped away, shapes and textures reveal interesting surprises.

Lynnie Rabinowitsh paints landscapes and cityscapes in oil, and sometimes adds collage for an additional ‘sparkle’. There is often the addition of an architectural form in the landscape to contrast with the organic shapes in nature. Kathy Farrell discovers shards and treasures in what others toss away. She forms broken pieces into functional and abstract mosaic art.

Kathy is influenced by Hundertwasser, Hoffman and Gaudi.

When Kristin creates the metallic paintings on canvas, she has no idea how the mild acids will react with the metal or

Monica Bryant is a Santa Rosa mixed media artist. She works with photographs, both her own and ‘discarded’ images.

She paints on the photographs as well as recomposes photographs into paintings.

As a volunteer helping immigrants study for the citizenship test, she created a large interactive painting of the American flag using the 100 questions about American government, history, culture and geography. In 2016, she exhibited at City College San Francisco with the feminist art group, The Beauty Project. You can visit her studio during Art at the Source and Art Trails or www.monicabryant.com.

SARAH AMMONS: THOUGHT PATTERNS September 27 – November 17, 2016 Reception: Friday, October 7, 5 - 7pm Sarah Ammons’ paintings and drawings express the daily psychological reality that is the human struggle. She uses pattern to represent a sense of personal history in memory and as a representation of the patterns we develop in our relationships, behavior and interactions. Inspired by Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory and the expressive figurative work of Egon Shiele and Paula Rego, Sarah uses color, line-work and organic handdrawn patterns to investigate relational dynamics and the role of personal history.

CATHERINE RICHARDSON: INCREASINGLY PRECIOUS November 22, 2016 – January 12, 2017 Reception: Friday, December 2, 5 - 7pm Catherine Richardson’s artwork is a cultivation of her connections to the natural world.

It becomes a practice of dissolving ego and allowing questions, musings and poetics to create dialogue with the art making process.

This exhibit references the rapidly changing higher latitudes of our planet. The layered imagery suggests activity in the arctic icemelt, mineral extraction and glacial mobility.

This work is fueled by research, emotions, imagination and Catherine’s observations from flying over Greenland during her annual journeys between UK and California.

CLIFF STROTHER: MY YEAR WITH THE JARI TRIBESMEN OF SOUTH VIET NAM August 23 – October 13, 2016 Reception: Wed., August 24, 5 - 7pm In September of 1966 as a “freshly minted” U.S. Army Special Forces Medic, Cliff Strother was sent to join a newly formed A-team in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam. Now in retirement, and approaching his seventh decade of life, Cliff has decided to occupy time learning to paint. He has opened doors to his past, long held tightly shut. What flowed out was this series of paintings that continue to emerge. With few photographs of the Jari Tribesmen, their story is told through Cliff’s memories.

CAT KAUFMAN: REVEALING THE SOUL OF OBJECTS December 6, 2016 – January 19, 2017 Reception: Wed., December 7, 5 - 7pm Consider all the objects you have touched in a lifetime; doorknobs, keys, clothespins, jewelry.

What if within each object is the memory of its use and users? Cat gathers these old pieces together to tell a new story in assemblage.

The rust, wear and tear of the pieces add informative history to the narrative. If you take the time to observe her pieces carefully, memories and emotions are triggered that are individual to each viewer. Cat’s studio is located in the SOFA Arts District of Santa Rosa.

This annual program, sponsored by The National Arts Program Foundation, allows residents of Santa Rosa or City of Santa Rosa employees and their families to enter one piece of artwork into a community exhibition at Finley Community Center. S A N TA R O S A R U R A L C E M E T E RY Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery www.srcity.org/ruralcemetery (707) 543-3279 Physical location: 1600 Franklin Ave The Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery is a 17-acre historic landmark located in the heart of Santa Rosa. It was a burial site for early residents primarily from the 1850s through the 1930s. The cemetery was restored from decades of neglect by volunteers, for the enjoyment of all.

VISITING THE CEMETERY The cemetery is open to the public daily from 6am-9pm (PDT) and 6am-6pm (PST).

Dogs must be on leash at all times. Burial plot maps and self-guided tour brochures can be found at the kiosks and on the web site.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES The Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery is volunteer-operated and maintained.

If you too would like to support this historical gem, join a volunteer workday on the third Saturday of each month, maintain a plot through the Adopt-a-Plot program, join the Rose Brigade, or serve on the Preservation Committee. Those are just some of the ways to volunteer! Visit the web site or call for more info.

BECOME A FRIEND OF THE RURAL CEMETERY Individuals can join the “Friends of the Rural Cemetery” at different membership levels, or make one-time contributions to the Rural Cemetery Preservation Fund, to help with the ongoing maintenance and preservation of this historic site.

Friends and volunteers receive a quarterly newsletter, The Cemeterian.

MEMORIAL AND HABITAT GARDEN In 2001, a small group of dedicated volunteers established a National Wildlife Federation Certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat garden at the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery to serve as a memorial garden, where stones could be placed commemorating those whose burial site is elsewhere or unknown. The garden design focuses on native, drought-tolerant plants that attract native bees and butterflies.

It has also been designated an official Monarch Sanctuary.

MEMORIAL ROSE GROVE The Memorial Rose Grove, created by the Cemetery’s volunteer Rose Brigade in the meadow to the north of the Franklin Avenue entrance, is dedicated to the memory of unknowns believed to be buried there and to the memory of victims of the 1906 earthquake, many of whom are buried throughout the cemetery and in a mass grave at the foot of meadow.

The grove contains a hundred vintage roses. Visit the website to see a list of rose categories found at the Rural Cemetery.

Youth Sports volunteer coaches, Adopt-A-Green Space, Rural Cemetery maintenance and programs, Luther Burbank Home & Gardens and working with seniors are just a few examples. PARK-A-MONTH VOLUNTEER PROGRAM These monthly family-friendly workdays help beautify our parks, historic sites, and recreation centers through tasks such as litter pickup, spreading mulch, cleaning, pruning, invasive species removal, weeding and more. Your child will love this opportunity to practice developing character acting as we weave together some of the most fun and interesting threads from the land of ‘Far Far Away’. Boating & Sailing in Howarth Park BOAT RENTAL INFORMATION Lifejackets are provided for free with the rental and all boaters MUST wear a lifejacket.

Paddleboat: $10/hour Accommodates: 4 people/740 lbs.

Please Note: You must have experience sailing and pass a short sailing test.

BRING YOUR OWN BOAT TO HOWARTH You are welcome to bring you own boat to Lake Ralphine. There is a day launch fee of $2 per boat, or a yearly launch permit for $10 per boat. These are available at the Boathouse during rental hours. (If you come during non-rental hours, you can launch your boat for free.) Boats over 20 ft are not allowed. Electric engines only!

PRIVATE SAILING LESSONS Our certified instructors will work with you based on your skill level. Cost is $40/hr with Rec & Parks sailboat or $30/hr using your own sailboat. For more information, email: howarthpark@srcity.org or call 543-3298.

Boating & Sailing Class Information

For all boating classes, please bring clothes/shoes that you wouldn’t mind getting wet. Sailing and Kayaking classes do practice capsizing, so come prepared! Although not all the classes get into the water, it is good to be prepared just in case. You may also wish to bring a towel, hat, sun block, water, and a snack. Please leave any valuables at home or locked securely in your vehicle, out of sight.

KAYAKING (Age 5+) 1 Day Paddle around Lake Ralphine enjoying the outdoors and the wildlife! Our experienced instructors will work with you to give you the confidence and skills needed to enjoy kayaking on beautiful Lake Ralphine. Please Note: Children ages 5-8 MUST be accompanied by an adult that is registered for the class! Min 4 Max 8

PADDLEBOARDING (Age 8+) 1 Day Come to Howarth Park to enjoy paddleboarding lessons!

Lessons include personal instruction on techniques for beginner boarder. The first hour of class will be intensive instruction followed by an hour of ‘free paddling” in which the instructor will be on the water for follow up instruction for all students.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED SAILING CLASS (Age 12+) 1 Day The Intermediate/Advanced Sailing Class is perfect for sailors who would like to have an instructor available to answer questions and give them tips. Our experienced instructors will help you expand on the skills and the knowledge needed to gain more confidence on the water. This class can be repeated as many times as you choose to reach your desired level of ability. All participants must be comfortable treading water. NOTE: Participants must have basic sailing and boating safety knowledge. Completion of either Sailing Camp for Youth, Beginner’s Sailing Class, or Boating Basics is recommended prior to taking this course. Min 2 Max 5

BEGINNER’S SAILING CLASS (Age12+) 1 Day Have you ever wanted to learn to sail? Come out to Howarth Park’s Lake Ralphine and our experienced instructors will teach you the basics needed to enjoy sailing around the lake. All participants must be comfortable treading water.

NOTE: This class is an introductory class. We recommend taking Intermediate/Advanced Sailing after completion of this course to develop the skills needed to fully enjoy independent sailing. Min 4 Max 8

CAMPS (Age 8-16)

End you child’s summer with a bang by signing them up for one of our camps classes. In Boating Camp, youth get an introduction to boating through the use of paddleboats, canoes, kayaks, stand up paddleboards and sailboats. In Sailing Camp, youth focus on acquiring the basic skills of sailing.

Public Swim offers a fun time in the water for all ages. All facilities will be open for use during public swim times and lifeguards will be on duty for your protection. Lockers are available for a 50¢ charge at both facilities. Our concession stand will be open with various food and drink items for sale. See information below for operating hours.

Also, please be aware of the following public swim policies: • Flotation devices are not permitted. This includes suits with built-in flotation pieces.

• Children under age 8 must be supervised by a responsible person age16+.

• Children under age 5 must have an adult in the water with them at all times.

• No jean cut-offs, T-shirts or street shorts allowed in the water.

• Only clearly identified service animals are permitted.

• Children must be 48 inches to ride the Ridgway water slide.

Water Fitness Classes WATER FITNESS (Age 16+) Water Fitness is a fun aquatic activity which uses the resistance of water to provide strength training and aerobic conditioning for people of all fitness levels.

These choreographed exercise routines provide smooth variable resistance through a full range of motion; some exercises require side-by-side movement while maintaining spatial awareness. Each instructor incorporates various movements that improve your strength, endurance, flexibility and well-being with little to no impact on the joints. People with minimal aquatic experience are encouraged to join us for this rejuvenating form of exercise.

Swim Lessons - General Information

Beginning Swim Program (Level 1 - Parent Child/Adult Beginner) Our beginning swim program is designed for all ages to gain basic water skills.

The focus of these courses is water adjustment and fun in the aquatic environment.

PARENT CHILD (Ages: 6 months - 3 years)

This is a FUN introduction to the water. Participants will work on a variety of skills in a casual setting, including singing songs and playing games. Water adjustment and beginner skills such as blowing bubbles, going underwater, floating, kicking and scooping will be introduced to students as well as parents. The program is designed to teach you to work with your child on water adjustment and introductory skills. Parent participation in the water is required.

TADPOLES (Ages: 3-5 years)

No previous water experience is required for this class. Students will work on being comfortable and enjoying their time in the water. Fun, games and imagination will be used to teach swimming skills including: blowing bubbles, going underwater, floating, kicking and alternating arms.

WATER FROGS (Ages: 4-5 years)

Students must be able to float and glide unassisted with their face in the water and back float with assistance. Students will work on introductory front crawl, back floats, back crawl and elementary backstroke.

SEA STARS (Ages: 6-9 years)

General Information Intermediate Swim Program (Level 2-5) Our intermediate swim program is designed to build swimming proficiency, technique and endurance. The focus of these courses is skill development.

LEVEL 2 (Ages: 5-9 years)

Prerequisite: Swim front crawl and back crawl 5 yards. Students will work on side breathing for front crawl, improving their back crawl and elementary backstroke arms.

Attention will be placed on skill proficiency and technique.

LEVEL 3 (Ages: 6 and up)

Prerequisite: Front crawl with side-breathing and back crawl for 15 yards, and elementary backstroke arms for 5 yards. Teaching will emphasize improving side-breathing and endurance for front crawl. Students will be introduced to elementary backstroke kick, breaststroke kick, butterfly kick and sitting and kneeling dives. This course will be taught in deeper water.

LEVEL 4 (Ages: 6 and up)

Prerequisite: 25 yards of front crawl with excellent side-breathing, 25 yards of back crawl, 15 yards of elementary backstroke, breaststroke kick, and dolphin kick. Students will learn to coordinate breaststroke arms and kick and be introduced to butterfly. Students will work on treading water and learning to do a standing dive from the side of the pool.

LEVEL 5 (Ages: 6 and up)

Prerequisite: 50 yards of front crawl and back crawl, 25 yards of the elementary backstroke, 15 yards of breaststroke and butterfly. Students will improve technique and endurance on the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke.

Students will work on proficiency in butterfly and the sidestroke, treading water, diving and flip turns.

SWIM LESSON INFORMATION • Age level indicates that the participant must be that age by the first day of class.

• Participants may not make-up classes which have been missed. If your child is sick the first few days of class, they are encouraged to take the remaining days.

• In the natural progression of children in swim lessons, it is not uncommon to expect your child to take and re-take a particular level before progressing to the next level.

• To remedy supervision concerns, please do not send children too early for classes and please pick up children on time.

• Persons will not be admitted to any fee program without being registered.

• Register early as classes fill up quickly.

• Save the registration receipt for presentation to the Swim Center Front Desk at the first class.

Children registered for a class which they are not qualified for will be placed in the correct class only if there is a vacancy. If there is no vacancy, your money will be refunded. Please read the class descriptions carefully to ensure your child is enrolled in the correct class.

Safety Training Lifeguard Training AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRAINING (Full Course) (Age 15+) The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with Title 22 First Aid Course is a 54-hour course that meets all necessary criteria towards becoming a professional lifeguard. Upon successful course completion, the participant will receive the following certifications: Lifeguarding/Standard First Aid/CPR/AED for the Lifeguard and First Aid for Public Safety Personnel-Title 22 (California State requirement). Course prerequisites, to be evaluated the first day of class, include: • Participant must successfully complete a 300yd. swim, demonstrating a reasonable command of both the front-crawl (a.k.a. free- style) and the breaststroke. This swim is not timed but must be swum continuously without stopping. Goggles are allowed.

• Participant must tread water - legs only - in an upright position with their hands in their armpits for 2 minutes.

•

Participant must surface-swim 20yds, dive to a depth of over 7ft., retrieve a 10lb. object from the pool bottom, resurface, return to the initial starting point and climb out with out the use of a ladder or steps. This portion must be successfully completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Goggles not allowed. Lap swim is a great way to prepare.

• Participant must be at least 15 years old by the end of the course.

Instructor’s note: Swimming is an exercise activity like no other! Therefore, if you have not been swimming recently on a somewhat regular basis, it is strongly recommended that you prepare yourself prior to the 300yd. prerequisite-swim by doing so.

Since this is such an intensive process it is highly recommended students review course material prior to the first class meeting. This program offers social and recreational activities for adults and teens, 16 and older, with developmental disabilities.

DANCES - SUPPORTED BY BECOMING INDEPENDENT (Age 16+)

Dances are the second Monday of every Month (unless otherwise noted) at the Steele Lane Community Center from 7-8:30pm. A DJ provides music for dancing. Admission is $5 per person. Soft drinks are available for purchase.

Participants must have a current I.D. and emergency phone number for admission. The dances are wheelchair accessible.

ADVENTURE DAYS (Age 16+)

Adventure Days are offered one Saturday a month, at the Steele Lane Community Center September thru May, from 10am to 1:30pm. Activities are varied and can include arts and crafts, games, and social time. Check bulletin for details. Fee is $12 per person. Pre-registration is required. This event is wheelchair accessible. Bring a lunch; beverages are provided.

Monthly events are mailed or emailed to participants every six months.

Reservaciónes De Parques:

Brincolínes:

Usted necesitá usar su propio generador para su brincolín, Las estacas no deben ser mas de 8 pulgadas de profundidad. El brincolín deberá ser puesto encima de una lona. Brincolínes de agua no son permitidos.

Piñatas:

Son permitidas en los parques pero dében proteger los arboles poniendo una toalla entre el arbol y la cuerda. Tambíen deben poner una lona para la basura de la piñata.

Our parks have picnic areas available on a first-come, first-served basis year round. By reserving a picnic site, you guarantee a spot for your event.

PICNIC PERMIT A standard picnic permit allows up to 200 people in a Community Park picnic site. The standard picnic reservation does not include exclusive use of any lawn area. All regular park rules apply. Visit srcity.org/parks and check the availability of picnic sites. For questions or to make a reservation, call 707-543-3753 or come in to the Finley Community Center on M-F 10am - 4:30pm.

SPECIAL USE PERMIT A Special Use Permit is required for events with an expected attendance of 200 + and also for ALL events held in a Neighborhood Park. In addition, a Special Use Permit is required for any of the following reasons, regardless of attendance: • Event is open to the public and attendance cannot be determined (i.e. fundraisers).

• Alcohol will be sold.

• Animals or special equipment such as carnival rides, vehicles, band, portable dance floor, tents, etc. will be brought into the park.

• Portable toilets and or/additional dumpsters will be needed.

• Event is outside the parameters of the picnic site or impacts the other park patrons.

• To download a Special Use Permit Application visit srcity.org/parks and click on “reservations.”

FEES • Small Picnic Sites: $45 Small Picnic Site: Howarth Park - $55 •

Large Picnic Sites: require an additional $100 refundable cleaning/damage deposit, plus the below fees:

• Jump Houses are allowed in several of our parks. We do NOT provide electricity or water.

• No smoking or glass in any City Parks.

• No vehicles in the park without prior approval by Department Director or authorized designee.

• Place trash in the garbage cans or dumpsters.

• Please respect the “field closed” signs to preserve the turf.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION • Registration is on a first come, first served basis.

• Registration will not be accepted in class by the instructors.

• Your name will automatically be placed on a waiting list when a class is full. (Including swim classes.)

• Register online or by mail/Fax/Phone for only those activities which have a barcode. If no barcode is listed, contact a Community Center or the Swim Center.

• Please allow at least 10 days to process mailed registration forms.

A receipt will be mailed to participants to indicate enrollment status.

• For mail/fax registration, if a class is full at the time of registration, you will be given your alternate class, if available, and automatically placed on a waiting list for your first choice. You will be notified by telephone should an opening become available.

• If you have not received confirmation, for a non-swim class, or wish to confirm your registration, call either Community Center at 543-3737 or 543-3282, after 9am, Monday - Friday. For a swim class, call the Swim Centers at 543-3760 or 543-3421.

• Future program fees are subject to change as City Council reviews the annual budget

CITY RESIDENTS Participants living within the Santa Rosa City limits receive a discount on classes and activities.

CLASS REFUND AND TRANSFER INFORMATION • Full refunds will be issued if the request is received 7 days prior to the starting date of the class.

• If a refund is requested less than 7 days prior to the start of a class, a 25% cancellation fee will be charged. If preferred, we will transfer the participant to another class whenever possible.

• Refunds or changes will not be allowed if submitted within 3 business days prior to the start of a class.

• Refund requests for camps are slightly different.

CAMP REFUND POLICY No refunds allowed for Day Camps after 5pm on the Thursday prior to camp.

SCHOLARSHIP DONATIONS Donating to our scholarship fund can provide recreational activities for financially challenged families. Your donation is tax deductible. You may donate any amount you wish by completing our mail registration form on page 67.
