25 Years Later: Remembering the Clear Autumn Morning That Changed Our World Forever
It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years. If you lived in the northeast on September 11, 2001, you’ll remember that crisp, perfect autumn morning, with clear skies, cool air, not a hint of humidity.
first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and that sense of comfort and routine shattered instantly.
I woke up that day thinking, “This is sweater weather,” and I picked my favorite one. My kids had already gone off to school, and I was just heading to a doctor’s appointment. It felt like any other ordinary day.
The confusion that followed was overwhelming. We struggled to make sense of what was unfolding; panic and fear crept in. I rushed to my kids’ school, a small, red-brick building in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, a bedroom community for Washington, D.C.
But if you lived through it, you know how quickly everything changed. At 8:46 a.m., the

coat. The school was on lockdown, and the principal was handing students off one by one. As the principal went back inside, the man in the black coat turned to me. “You know what today is?” he asked. I don’t remember how I answered, but he went on: “It’s September 11. 9-1-1. That’s significant. Our lives will never be the same after this.” Then he told me he was supposed to be at the Pentagon that morning, but something had pulled him away. Pure chance. When my children came out, I had to find words to explain why I was bringing them home so early. I don’t remember what I said. The next few days unfolded in a blur. Like so many people, I was glued to the TV, watching, re-watching. The sight of the second plane hitting, seeing the towers collapse, and the desperate faces on those missing-person posters in New York. I remember the firefighters and police officers racing up those burning stairwells, knowing full well they probably wouldn’t make it out again. I couldn’t help but think back to my younger days living in New York City, working as a temp at the World Trade Center. I wondered how many other temps were there that morning, just called in for the day. By the numbers: 2,977 victims died in the attacks, not counting the 19 hijackers.
At the World Trade Center, 2,753 people died, including people in the Twin Towers and those on the ground. At the Pentagon, 184 people lost their lives. That count includes 125 civilians and military personnel in the building, plus 59 people on American Airlines Flight 77. On United Flight 93, the plane that crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 40 passengers and crew members died. Fred Rogers’ words come to mind. His mother told him, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” That day, there were so many helpers. Heroes. The numbers are sobering: 343 FDNY firefighters died trying to save lives. The Port Authority lost 37 officers, and the NYPD lost 23 more. Eight emergency medical service personnel were killed, too. In the years since, thousands have battled illnesses or died from the toxic dust they breathed while working at Ground Zero. The casualties were staggering. But one loss that’s more difficult to measure is the loss of our sense of safety, something we once took for granted, vanished that morning. Now, every year, we pause and remember. At first, it was impossible to imagine forgetting. We see the stickers, the yard signs: “Never forget.”
But the world changes. Over 100 million Americans have been born since that day, according to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. They don’t have memories of that morning. They learn about it in school, from documentaries and photographs, from the memories of people who were there. What once divided time into “before” and “after” is slowly becoming history, fading, yet always present. There are annual rituals: the reading of the names, the twin beams of memorial light, retelling the stories of heroism and loss. But events shift and take on different meanings. September 11 has shaped politics, foreign policy, and even our own identities as Americans. At its heart, though, it’s always a story of ordinary people facing unimaginable circumstances and showing extraordinary courage. Fred Rogers also said, “To this day, especially in times of ‘disaster,’ I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers—so many caring people in this world.” Twenty-five years later, the pain hasn’t disappeared. We’re all still trying to process what happened. September 11 changed us, and that change is still unfolding. We remember, we honor the lives lost, and the sacrifices made, and we keep the promise to never forget.

ENGLEWOOD EXAMINER Meet Englewood’s Newest ‘Mayor 4 a Day’: The Literacy Center’s Courtney DeFilippis Married with four children, she’s coming up on a long stretch of marriage (though she admits she’s lost count), raises four kids: three teenagers and a nine-year-old, all while keeping her real estate career running, and still finds time to drive her nonprofit, TLC. No surprise, her family takes her “Mayor 4 a Day” win in stride. “They’re like, oh, good. Are you gonna make dinner again soon?” she jokes.
Congratulations to Courtney DeFilippis, Englewood’s honorary Mayor 4 a Day.
But at the heart of what she does lies a message she’s learned the hard way, watching her own kids struggle and push through challenges. “Always believe in yourself. My experience with my two kids, which is how I started with TLC, was watching them face real struggles to the point where they almost gave up. If you just keep believing in yourself and working hard, you can overcome just about anything. God has got a plan for all of us and made us who we are for a reason.”
Which living person do you most admire?
For more information about The Literacy Center for Dyslexia, go to tlc4dyslexia.com or call 941473-2266. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Jesus coming back. But my perfect happiness is when my family’s all home and we’re together.
I very much admire my kids because it’s fun seeing them experience life, and how they take on each new day. If you could have any talent, what would it be? Maybe have a little more patience and think before I speak a little more. That, and being a singer. What is your life motto? I think the golden rule is always
a good one. What do you consider your greatest achievement? Lately, I’ve realized it’s not always about me. A lot of the time, things are just bigger than what I want or how I feel. Sometimes you have to step up and say yes, even when it’s not something you’d choose for yourself. Honestly, I never would’ve signed up for this on my own. But I get it, there’s a bigger picture here. I really believe in showing up and serving wherever we’re called, even if it means doing things outside my comfort zone. Every edition, Englewood REVIEW spotlights someone who stands out in the community. We ask each person to tackle The Proust Questionnaire; a classic set of questions created by Marcel Proust, the French writer.
2026 Mayor 4 a Day, Courtney DeFilippis with Linda Stevens, 2026 Grand Marshal
Courtney DeFilippis, who leads The Literacy Center for Dyslexia (TLC), stepped into the spotlight as Englewood’s 2026 “Mayor 4 a Day” on September 2 at the Grove City Bar & Grill. And she didn’t get there by standing still; Courtney and her team raised an impressive $25,841 for the cause. Although she was born in Alvin,
Texas, you’d never guess it from her voice. “I grew up actually on Palm Island,” Courtney says. “I moved out to Palm Island when I was eight, so I’m almost a Floridian.” After about forty years in the area, she’s more than earned the title. Juggling life seems almost second nature to her. She laughs when asked how she manages it all. “Speed,” she says.

Kids’ Needs Celebrates Ribbon-Cutting at Tiffany Square Let’s congratulate Kids’ Needs Greater Englewood FL, Inc. on their official ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating their brand-new home at Tiffany Square.
This is a big moment for an organization that works hard every day to support children and families throughout our community. The whole Kids’ Needs team and their dedicated volunteers deserve real credit. They’ve poured time and effort into making this new space inviting and useful. “I want to thank the many sponsors, businesses, and individuals that helped put this remodel together, and to make it truly happen,” says Becca DeRosa, secretary and a member of the board of directors for Kids’ Needs Greater Englewood FL. “Our organization is so truly grateful for all the help. We could’ve never done it by ourselves at all, so thank you to Englewood and the many people and businesses
that did help us.”
If you get a chance, stop by their boutique store. They’re at Tiffany Square, 2828 S. McCall Rd., Suite 38-39 in Englewood. The boutique opens Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, but only when Charlotte County schools are in session. No need for appointments; they welcome walk-ins because they want to serve families right when they need help. Kids’ Needs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, completely run by volunteers who live right here. Their work stretches across Englewood, Rotonda, Boca Grande, and Placida, neighbors pitching in for neighbors. They collect and distribute schoolapproved clothes, school supplies, personal hygiene items, socks, underwear, and shoes. The goal? It’s simple but powerful: keep kids in school and out of harm’s way.
Becca DeRosa is holding the scissors and is surrounded by Kids’ Needs volunteers and Chamber members. Courtesy Marilyn Johnson
The support doesn’t stop there. They accept monetary donations, using those funds to replenish supplies, provide holiday assistance, and back youth programs both in schools and in the wider community. Each year, Kids’ Needs proudly awards three $1,000 scholarships to graduating
seniors at Lemon Bay High School, with the recipients chosen by the school staff. Kids’ Needs has earned the community’s trust, not just as a nonprofit, but as a true neighbor. If you’re interested in getting involved, now’s the perfect time. There’s a place for you at
Kids’ Needs, whether you want to volunteer, donate, or just spread the word. Your support helps Kids’ Needs make a real difference, one child and one family at a time. Go to kidsneedsenglewood.org for more information, or email: info@kidsneedsenglewood.org

Another Pioneer Days is in the books, and this year was something special. The 70th annual Englewood Pioneer Days filled Englewood, Florida with disco fever over Labor Day weekend, running September 5th through 7th, 2026. To mark the milestone, the whole town leaned into a playful “70s Disco” theme, with bright colors, big hair, and a lot of polyester. Families and neighbors turned out in full force, packing three days with crafts, food stalls, live music, pirates roaming the streets, and parade entries dripping in disco flair. Fast, Funny, and Flawless: Lemon Bay Playhouse Opens Season with Divine 1940s Screwball Farce Lemon Bay Playhouse kicked off its season on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with “Theatre People or The Angel Next Door.” If you catch just one show this year, this is the one.
This production, “Theatre People, or The Angel Next Door,” brings a whirlwind of 1940s screwball energy to the stage. Playwright Paul Slade Smith delivers an adaptation of Ferenc Molnár’s 1924 Hungarian farce, “Play at the Castle” (sometimes titled “The Play’s the Thing”). It’s a fast, funny script and bursting with charm. Set in an elegant mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1948. Oliver Adams, a painfully shy debut novelist (Leo Dominiqua nails this lovesick puppy), eagerly anticipates the impending success of his first book, “The Angel Next Door.” His muse? The dazzling Broadway star Margot Bell, played with radiant charisma by Alisha Hunter. Sparks already fly, but then add Arthur and Charlotte Sanders, a famous, constantly bickering husband-and-wife playwriting duo (Jimmie Choate and Linda Ramzell are both comedy powerhouses with impeccable timing). The group settles in for a weekend retreat. As you’d expect with thin walls and tangled relationships, secrets leak, identities get crossed, and hilarity ensues. Toss in the quirky maid Olga (Tricia Petrinovich, wringing every laugh out of the part, think Cloris Leachman in “Young Frankenstein”) and Broadway star Victor Pratt (Tanmert Selby’s charm along with his rubber-face adds just the right touch), and you’ve got peak farce, pure chaos, expertly controlled. Of course, none of this works without a director who knows how to keep the comedy sharp but never frantic. Ric Goodwin absolutely delivers. Timing is everything in this genre, and the show’s rhythm nails it: snappy, but you never lose the plot. Every actor has their shining moment but working together like a finely tuned machine.

Pam Hayes’ set design and Tom Athens’ sound and lighting make you believe you’ve landed in a Newport mansion, not on Dearborn Street. For a couple of hours, you’re somewhere else; that’s the real magic of live theater. Lemon Bay Playhouse knows how to throw an opening night. Guests sipped wine, sampled hors d’oeuvres, and admired lobby art displays. Executive and Artistic Director Susana Falcon pulled together a true community event, partnering with local favorites Chophouse285 and Englewood Center for the Arts. The result is a night you won’t forget. Here’s to Lemon Bay Playhouse, a fantastic start to the season, and a toast to plenty more unforgettable evenings ahead. Dates: September 2-20, 2026 Location: Lemon Bay Playhouse, 96 W. Dearborn St, Englewood, FL 34223 Genre: Comedy Tickets: Individual tickets are $35. Paws Up! B&B Pet Resort Crowned ‘Best of Florida’ for Ultimate Pup Pampering who owns B&B Pet Resort with her husband, Robert. She still sounds surprised about the recognition.
Amber and Robert Kaleda, owners of B&B Pet Resort
Congratulations to B&B Pet Resort, who were just named Best of Florida 2026. The resort offers dog daycare, overnight lodging, luxury suites, and enrichment programs, everything to spoil your pup. They walked away with the “Best of Florida 2026” Regional Winner award. We caught up with Amber Kaleda,
“I mean, we’ve only been open for a year and a half. To even get nominated here in the EnglewoodPort Charlotte area felt huge. When we found out we’d actually won regionals—wow, that was exciting. We’re going for the whole state next year. Go big or go home, right?”
We have three dogs of our own. There’s just not much like this around here, and people want to travel and feel safe knowing their dogs are cared for. We only board dogs, and we do daycare too. With bigger places, it can feel less personal. Here, we treat them as if they were at home. That was always my vision: to make sure the dogs are comfortable and people don’t worry while they’re away.”
Amber says the entire experience has been a whirlwind. “We’re a small, new place, so getting nominated surprised us. But you know how this town is; word-ofmouth travels fast. Referrals have really kept us going.”
Amber knew this business idea would be great for the area. A lot of pet owners don’t feel comfortable leaving their dogs at some enormous facility. Even if the care is good, they want that personal touch.
When asked where the idea for a pet resort came from, Amber explains, “We’re animal people.
“We see a lot of first timers,” she says. “People who’ve never left their dogs anywhere but home,
who always had a sitter come by. That’s what we’re aiming for. When people leave their dogs with us, we want them to know we’ll treat them like family. Same way as they do at home.” Does she ever get unusual requests from clients? Amber answered with a laugh. “Oh, all the time, like, ‘Can my dog sleep in the bed with you?’ That sort of thing. And yeah, we do stay there overnight because lots of people don’t want their dogs left alone. I totally get that. I’ve boarded my own dogs before.” Amber and Robert really set their place apart by always having someone on hand. Amber put it simply: “Sometimes, we even let the dogs sleep with us if that’s what they’re used to.” And what’s B&B really like
Voted Best of Florida 2026
for the dogs? Amber calls it “Disneyland.” She smiled, saying, “It’s like going to grandma’s house. The dogs are on vacation, too. That’s what we wanted, not some stressful vet visit or just sitting in a kennel. They get a lot of free time, day and night.” Here’s to Amber and Robert, the team behind B&B Pet Resort. They’re making Florida a happier place for dogs and their owners. Location: 13425 Muriel Ave in Port Charlotte, serving Englewood, Port Charlotte, and nearby areas. SHORE & KAYAK FISHING BY KIMBALL & LES BEERY
Easy Riggings for Kayak Anglers of versatile setups that adapt quickly and safely. The Versatility of the Jig When a kayak angler is on the water, every minute not spent fishing feels like a missed opportunity. The quiet paddling, the wildlife, and the beauty of Southwest Florida are part of the joy; essential moments that help us unwind from life ashore. But the time lost re-rigging terminal tackle as we move from spot to spot is what we try to minimize. Kayak anglers regularly transition between shallow flats, oyster bars, deeper grass beds, and channels. Each zone requires different tackle, but a kayak offers limited space. Unlike bass tournament anglers who carry several rigged rods, kayak anglers must rely on a couple 941-474-9802. Few pieces of terminal tackle offer more flexibility than the jig. It’s compact, effective, and safe, especially important in the tight quarters of a kayak. We discourage the use of multiple treble hook lures in our kayaks. Shallow Water (6–24 inches) A 1/16 oz jig head paired with a soft plastic tail allows for a slower retrieve, ideal for skinny water. With countless options for color, size, and action, a small box of jig heads and tails covers a wide range of situations.
worm This lets you crawl a lure through grass and oyster edges without snagging. Deeper Flats (3 feet and deeper) Move up to 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig heads to reach the bottom. These heavier jigs fall faster on the pause, a motion that often triggers strikes as fish chase the bait into the grass. Natural bait colors perform best. Our favorite DOA 3” shad tail colors include: Rainbow Trout, Golden Shiner, Stark Naked, White, Clear, and Root Beer. Jigs also shine when switching to bait. A shrimp or pinfish, chin-hooked on a jig head stays upright and looks natural on the bottom. Dragging a shrimp across sand holes has produced countless redfish for us.
A Simple, Effective Live-Bait Rig We often carry a few live shrimp and keep a second rod rigged for bait with: 2’ of 20 lb. fluorocarbon leader 1/0–2/0 live bait hook Popping cork to maintain depth and keep the bait above the grass Split shot for weight (various sizes) A few swivels A small split shot on the leader helps any bait get down quickly to keep birds from snatching it off the surface. Split shot also avoids the tangles common with sliding sinker rigs.
With these essentials, you’ll be prepared for nearly anything Southwest Florida throws at you while keeping your time focused on fishing, not fiddling with tackle.
If you use a sliding sinker, give the line a pull after splashdown. This straightens the rig as it sinks and prevents most tangles. If the shrimp run out, hook on a DOA shrimp and carry on. Pack Light, Stay Ready
Wide-gap 1/0 hook Rigged like a weedless bass
If you bring two rods, make sure you rig one with a jig.
Kayak anglers aim to be ready for anything while carrying as little as possible. Re-rigging is sometimes unavoidable, but these two core setups dramatically reduce downtime.
