Sun, Sand, and Spooks

Englewood is alive with ghostly lore and so much more. Do you believe in ghosts? Spirits? Haunted houses? Halloween has a way of pulling everyone into a little spooky fun, whether you’re a diehard skeptic or someone who totally buys into the ghost stuff. Most days, Englewood feels laid-back, a coastal town with slow rhythms, sea breezes, nothing out of place. Then autumn rolls around. Suddenly, all these old legends and ghost stories crawl out from the shadows. Read more about Englewood’s top four haunted spots on page 21.

Shifting gears: big news for the Rotary Club of Englewood. They just announced the winners of the Ann Dever Children’s Advocacy Award at Ann and Chuck Dever Regional Park. Brian Faro was honored for his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Dawn and Donnie Stephens won for what they’ve accomplished through Spread Spencer’s Sparkle. Congrats to Brian, Dawn, and Donnie. The heart you bring to the community matters. In sports, Lemon Bay High School keeps making headlines. Not only are the September Athletes of the Month out, but the Girls Golf team just locked in their ninth straight County Championship. They narrowly edged Charlotte by 397-401. The match was tight, right up to the last three holes. These ladies just keep going. Well done. You’ll find plenty more in this issue. We’ve got a tantalizing profile of Chef Michael Kocinski, owner of Mako’s Coastal Kitchen, plus his answers to the Proust Questionnaire. And our Join the Adventure section features Ed Johnston and Joyce Pilates, marking their tenth anniversary in Las Vegas. They brought the REVIEW along for a little extra luck. Enjoy Halloween and the season. And remember, nothing says “Halloween” like grabbing a giant bag of candy, eating most of it yourself, and leaving just a couple for the trick-or-treaters.

The Rotary Club of Englewood just named the newest winners of the Ann Dever Children’s Advocacy Award. They made the announcement at Ann and Chuck Dever Regional Park, the spot that bears her name. Brian Faro took home the award thanks to his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters. And the committee honored Dawn and Donnie Stephens for their achievements through their nonprofit, Spread Spencer’s Sparkle. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast is the local branch here in Southwest Florida. It’s been around since 1968 and now ranks as the 10th largest agency in the country. They just picked up the 2025 Growth Award from the national organization, which says a lot about their momentum. The group matches kids facing adversity (“Littles,” ages 6 to 21) with adult volunteers (“Bigs”), giving them guidance and connection oneon-one.

Spread Spencer’s Sparkle started in Englewood in 2021 after Dawn Stephens lost her son, Spencer Owen Stephens, in an auto accident. Spencer was a local performer, outspoken about his faith, and known for championing LGBTQ+ kids. He didn’t hide who he was, and that made him a beacon for others. After he died, his family could have just grieved quietly, but instead, they turned it into a movement for kindness, inclusion, and community outreach. The nonprofit focuses on more than just acceptance. They support youth, arts and theater, LGBTQ+ awareness, and all kinds of local projects. Their scholarships help Lemon Bay High School students. They repair instruments, upgrade school theater equipment, sponsor shoe drives, install community art, and even started a windphone project in town. They cover homecoming, prom, and graduation costs for students

who need a little help. It’s about turning grief into good by lifting up kids in the community. The Ann Dever Children’s Advocacy Award carries a lot of meaning in Englewood. It’s not just a plaque. It’s a communityvoted honor that celebrates those who put local children first, push for their protection, and help make their lives better. Ann Dever, the award’s namesake, died of lung cancer in 2009, leaving behind a powerful legacy. She was a founding member of the Placida Rotary Club. She served on Charlotte County’s recreation advisory board and lobbied hard to bring modern parks, fields, a pool, and a splash playground to the area. The 315-acre Ann and Chuck Dever Regional Park exists because she refused to settle for less. This award exists to remind the community what one determined advocate can accomplish, and to shine that spotlight on the next generation of champions.

What is your greatest regret? Lexi and Michael Klocinski

Michael Klocinski, C.E.C., owner and chef at Mako’s Coastal Kitchen, began his culinary journey at age fifteen in Lima, Ohio, where he quickly developed a deep dedication to the craft. After moving to Columbus, he worked his way up from dishwasher to lead line cook at La Scala Italian Bistro. It was also during this time that he met his wife, Alexis, and began building their family. His extensive private club experience includes completing a chef’s apprenticeship program at Muirfield Village Golf Club under Chef John Souza. Michael earned his first Executive Chef title at Shaker Heights Country Club, successfully running the operation for five years. He went on to manage two clubhouses at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Arizona, before spending the past ten years as Executive Chef at the Boca Bay Pass Club in Florida.

Throughout his twenty-year career, Michael has specialized in building strong, capable culinary teams. Guided by the hospitality philosophy, which is, “The answer is yes, what is the question?” He makes sure his team takes initiative and regularly goes beyond what members expect. He brings extensive administrative expertise, including budget creation, board collaboration, and overseeing design inputs for four major clubhouse and kitchen renovations. Michael and Alexis have raised three children: Karli, Riley, and Tyler. Now, he and his family are excited to bring his passion, expertise, love for the outdoors, and his incredible culinary gifts to the community of Englewood. What is your most marked or distinctive characteristic? Attention to details and helping others.

Florida Air Show Star Aarron Deliu Flips Learning Upside Down at Deep Creek Elementary Air show pilot Aarron Deliu brought his love for flying straight into Deep Creek Elementary’s classroom, lighting up the room with stories from around the globe. As a star of the upcoming 2026 Florida International Air Show, Deliu shared the highs and surprises of aerobatic flight, answering a flood of questions and giving students a real taste

of aviation. He stood next to a screen filled with dramatic flight footage and cockpit views, pointing out the details and breaking down the maneuvers. Kids watched, fascinated, as Deliu talked about his agile Extra 330SC and the tricks he pulls off. He even walked them through his live cockpit-to-ground commentary,

showing how he talks to crowds mid-flight, sharing what he’s seeing and feeling. The visit went beyond words. Deliu handed out autographed photos and leaned over tables to sign each one personally. Kids grinned, collected high-fives, and took home the memory of meeting a performer they’ll soon see soaring overhead. Deelynn Bennett, the Florida International Air Show’s director of education and STEM, is teaming up with local partners to connect children with aviation through the Jet, Set, Read program. This initiative lets kids dive into

aviation-themed books and hands-on projects, offering free air show admission to those who complete the “Earn Your Wings Reading Challenge.” It sparks curiosity, blending reading with real-world encounters and introducing young minds to STEM possibilities. Mark your calendar: The 2026 Florida International Air Show lands November 7–8 at Punta Gorda Airport. You’ll see Deliu along with Bill Culberson in the MiG-17, Rick Sharpe piloting the TA-4J Skyhawk, Kevin Coleman, Franklin’s Flying Circus, and The Chuters Jump Team. The weekend packs in aircraft displays, hands-on

STEM activities, food, and family fun. For tickets or details, head to www.floridaairshow. com or call 941-368-4430. The Florida International Air Show rallies volunteers every year to celebrate aviation, boost local charities, and inspire future pilots and engineers. Their outreach, through programs like Jet, Set, Read and the STEM Innovators Pavilion, opens doors for young people across the region. It’s not just about thrilling aerial stunts; it’s about igniting curiosity in aviation, science, and technology. Find out more at www. floridaairshow.com.

Lemon Bay High School Athletics pulls it off once again. The Girls Golf team clinched the County Championship, nine years straight. They edged out Charlotte, winning 397-401 in a match that kept everyone guessing until the last three holes. Savannah Pope deserves a huge shout out, as she’s now a two-time County Champion. Lori Henry and Makaila Lindsey also made the AllCounty team, and their hard work really showed.

Coach Sean Strickland, who leads both Girls Golf and Track, summed it up perfectly: “The girls overcame a slow start and finished strong, winning our ninth consecutive county title. After the front nine, we were trailing by twelve strokes, but the girls didn’t let up. They rallied and ended up four strokes ahead of Charlotte.” “The heat on the course was no joke, but the girls pushed through. Senior captains Savannah Pope and Makaila Lindsey kept everyone focused, and their leadership

carried the team right through to the win. Savannah played a consistent round and won by eight strokes, taking home the County Champion title again.” Lori Henry, a junior, shot her personal best, the first time she’s ever broken 100, finishing at 98. She joins Savannah and Makaila on the All-County team. Rounding out the squad: sophomores Emma McFarland, Noelle Perin, and Julie Pfaffendorf. Well done, Lemon Bay Girls Golf. Nine years as county champs. You make Englewood proud.

Englewood’s Artist Colony Powers Up Pioneer Plaza an Art Market and the Kids Korner, which opens at 10 a.m. Food and cash donations start at noon. Volunteers can join at any time.

Englewood’s Artist Colony

The Artist Colony in Englewood is bringing back its lineup of family festivals and benefit concerts at Pioneer Plaza this season. If you’re looking for art and live music with a community vibe, these events are for you. After their first Woodstock Benefit Concert raised $9,000 for St. David’s Jubilee Pantry’s generator, the Artist Colony formed as a nonprofit in

September 2025. Buoyed by that success, they grabbed Sundays for events and rolled out a Beatles Tribute and a second Woodstock concert in the spring of 2026. When cold weather hit, they shuffled the schedule, moving the Beatles Tribute from February to March and shifting Woodstock to April. That’s also when they debuted a food court, with Charlie Foxtrot Brewing

on board for adult drinks. The second Woodstock Benefit drew in so many families that for the next season, the Colony added a Kids Korner with lawn games. This year, they’re running two sets of three Family Festivals, each with concerts supporting Lemon Bay High School Marching Band and St. David’s Jubilee Pantry. Donors and patrons get IRS confirmation letters, and all festivals include

The fall series begins with Oktoberfest on October 25. The Food Court offers a packed selection including German Snack Bar, Sip Sip Hooray Garden Café, Outside the Lunchbox, Dave’s Neapolitan Pizza, Blacken Blues BBQ, The ‘Q’ Ice Cream Truck, and The Twisted Lemon. German entertainment kicks off at 1 p.m. Then the Benefit Concert starts at 4, featuring Stardust Band and Corrupt Signal. On November 22, the Wizard of Oz-themed “There’s No Place Like Home” festival honors servicemen, veterans and their families. Musicians can take the open mic to share their name and branch or dedicate a song to someone who’s served. Along with the Kids Korner, the Colony is hosting a Korn Hole Tournament matching veterans with ROTC students, and veterans will get to pick a kiddo

to compete with them. Every kid representing a veteran in the tourney gets a participation medal. Food Court expands, with Casa Uruguay joining the mix. Rising Tide and The Old Glory Band headline the benefit concert, starting at 4. The Holiday Showcase wraps up the season on December 6. Alongside art and kids’ activities, musicians are welcome to play in an open mic session, with plenty of seasonal music. The headliners for the benefit show are still in the works. Director Sydney Martin says, “Becoming a nonprofit, we immediately planned to create more benefit concerts for specific causes.” Sydney is rounding up artists, musicians, and performers for future events. If you want to get involved, reach out at i2garden@yahoo.com. The Artist Colony in Englewood is all about supporting the arts, visual, musical, and performing alike.

Think Englewood is Just a Quiet Beach Town? These Haunted Hot Spots Will Make You a Believer

People report strange noises, sudden cold spots, and just an uneasy vibe. The building’s been empty for years, and local explanations often come back to these hauntings. People who pass by and folks who work nearby often talk about the usual ghostly stuff, unexplained thuds, footsteps echoing inside when no one’s there, cold gusts by the doors, and just an uneasy feeling that hangs in the air.

The Royal Casino House

Halloween costumes have changed in the last century.

Do you believe in ghosts? Spirits? Haunted houses? Halloween’s the time when everyone, skeptics and believers alike, embraces a little bit of eerie fun. Englewood usually feels like a quiet, coastal town, but the local legends are something else. This stretch of Florida, along with nearby Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte, gets pretty lively once the autumn chill sets in. Haunted spots, ghost stories, and Halloween events seem to pop up everywhere. The Englewood REVIEW recently featured a story about “The Wild Man of Englewood.” Our readers wasted no time jumping in, sharing their personal tales, especially about eerie happenings on Yale Street and all over town. Here’s what some folks had to say: One Englewood local remembers living in an old stone house at New Point Comfort. Every night, the screen door would slam, footsteps crossed the porch, and the front doorknob turned, except nobody was ever there. The living room had a strange ceramic mosaic, and nobody could figure out what it meant. After that person moved, their brother took over, but didn’t last long. Apparently, he heard someone coming in constantly but always found the place empty.

Someone else said there’s a haunted house on Yale Street. Some call it the work of native spirits. According to them, the entire area’s haunted, but not in an evil way. Native spirits wander about, just part of the landscape.

ranches in the early 1900s. In 1910, ranchers tracked him down and sent him to a state mental asylum. Years later, Josephine Cortes revived the legend. These days, people say if you stroll to the end of Yale Street on a moonlit night, you might glimpse him at the water’s edge. If the wind’s right, you’ll smell something foul, like a fresh kill.

bootleg liquor slipping in from Cuba. When the money dried up after the 1927 land bust and the stock market crash, the casino shut its doors. For a while, it became a gritty fish house, not exactly glamorous, but it kept going. Things changed in 1939. Ollie Tate, a local, took the entire structure apart, board by board, and rebuilt it inland on West

A local from Port Charlotte wrote in who’s been around for 45 years and grew up hearing stories about strange things happening nearby in Englewood. Someone living in Venice said they’d heard about the haunted house at the end of Dearborn. It burned down, and now it’s gone. A friend once lived in that building and insisted that it was definitely haunted. Rocking chairs moved by themselves, and in photos of the fire, you could spot a ghost in the window. Let’s dig into four of Englewood’s most famous haunted spots. The Wild Man of Englewood (Yale Street) You’ve probably heard the warnings: Don’t walk Yale Street after dark. True crime buffs might know the legend. Back in 1960, journalist Josephine Cortes told the story of “The Wild Man of Englewood.” This Florida folklore centers on a mysterious man who lived off the land, wearing animal skins, blamed for livestock disappearing from

Locals sometimes point to old legends for answers. Some argue that this stretch along Dearborn and Indiana Avenue runs over ancient ground. Because Native people once lived and gathered around places like Indian Mound Park, they say spirits might still roam downtown, giving the area that haunted reputation. One reader mentioned experiencing strange happenings in the empty store on Indiana Avenue right next to Obee’s. She said, “The place used to be a supermarket, but the rumors about hauntings could explain why it’s sat vacant for so long.” The Hermitage (Manasota Key)

The Royal Casino House (The Tate Home) Originally built during the 1920s land boom as the “Royal Casino,” it was the place to eat, dance, and sneak illegal hooch from Cuba. Following the land bust in 1927, the place stood abandoned. The original Royal Casino wasn’t just perched on the waterfront; it actually stretched out over Lemon Bay, sitting high on wooden stilts, with nothing but a long pier connecting it to the land near Buchan’s Landing. People came by boat from places like Boca Grande, dressed to impress, or strolled the wooden boardwalk to leave the ordinary world behind. Back in the roaring twenties, that place was wild. Orchestras from Arcadia played late into the night, slot machines rattled, and illegal gambling thrived. Rum-running was a given, with

Dearborn Street, right next to Kelly’s Tavern. He didn’t just move it. He restored it piece by piece. People said ghosts of gamblers and drinkers from the old days haunted the house. It sits right on West Dearborn Street, beside Kelly’s Tavern, and the stories about restless spirits from its casino era have never really died out. People say the place feels haunted by the ghosts of its past, and you can catch whispers, feel the energy of old gamblers, bootleggers, and dancers lingering somewhere in the woodwork. Dearborn Street & Indiana Avenue Buildings Plenty of business owners and locals swap stories about odd happenings in downtown Englewood. The old supermarket building on Indiana Avenue, next to Obee’s, gets singled out again and again.

Just a couple miles from Englewood, the Hermitage on Manasota Key stretches back to around 1900. It once served as a nudist colony, and it pops up regularly in Florida ghost stories. Built by Swedish immigrant Carl Johanson for his family, the legend centers on his mother-in-law, Matilda. She lived there, practiced folk healing, and kept a mysterious “holy lead” for her rituals. After her death, the lead remained, and the property has been associated with unusual happenings ever since. Paranormal databases rate the Hermitage with an Estimated Haunted Probability score of about 54.2 out of 100, a solid rating, if you’re into that kind of thing. Whether you believe the tales or just enjoy a good scare, Englewood and its neighbors have plenty of legends to explore. Happy haunting.

Englewood Chamber Names Kellie Dunson Allen as New Executive Director The Englewood Chamber of Commerce just welcomed Kellie Dunson Allen as its Executive Director. Kellie steps into this role with a solid track record: she’s led nonprofits, managed finances and operations, run HR programs, and spearheaded business development efforts. She knows what it takes to help businesses grow and keep a community thriving.

Kellie Dunson Allen

Her recent work paints a clear picture. She’s supervised multiple departments, set up operational policies, strengthened local partnerships, and launched marketing strategies that got people talking. She helped build out a $10.2 million budget and managed a fundraising portfolio that hit $2.1 million a year, with grants, partnerships, business and individual donors, plus special events. Kellie’s focus has always been on making a real impact, not just for organizations but for the community itself.

In 2025, she took home the United Way of Charlotte County named the Bella Donna Award from the Charlotte-DeSoto Building Industry Association as a Woman of Distinction. She’s also held leadership roles with Leadership Englewood, serving as Class Vice-Chair in 2024–2025 and Class Chair in 2025–2026.

Kellie’s roots in Englewood run deep. In 2024, she was involved with Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity, which was named Non-Profit of the Year by both the Englewood Chamber and Punta Gorda Chamber. She’s served as a conference presenter, a hospital advisory council member, a disaster recovery volunteer, and a long-time community volunteer. Besides her success in nonprofits, Kellie’s business experience is just as impressive. She has organized and run office tasks, managed financial reports, created HR programs from the

beginning, organized payroll and legal requirements, and worked closely with company leaders to plan for expansion. Now as Executive Director, Kellie will oversee Chamber operations, develop member engagement, build strong ties with community partners, and drive initiatives that support economic growth in Englewood. Chamber President Peter Jennings summed it up: “We’re thrilled to have Kellie taking over the role, and we look forward to the energy, ideas, and leadership she’ll bring. Her professional experience brings valuable skills and perspective as we support local businesses and strengthen our community.” The Chamber is excited for what’s next: stronger connections, advocacy for local businesses, and keeping Englewood’s business community fun and thriving.

120 N. Indiana Ave • Englewood • 941.475.1185 Six years ago, Poland-born Artur Janta-Lipinski purchased the building that formerly housed Howard’s restaurant with a vision to bring his rich cultural heritage and passion for food to the heart of Southwest Florida. The building, located on Indiana Avenue, quickly became a canvas for Artur, who transformed the former restaurant into a community gathering place celebrating Polish heritage, food and community. From its authentic Polish cuisine to its expansive tiki bar and live entertainment, Artur’s has become a destination for locals and seasonal visitors alike. Artur started in 2017 as the operator of Phil’s 41 in Punta Gorda, where he incorporated traditional Polish dishes into the existing Italian menu and worked alongside Amelia May, his current general manager. Amelia has worked with Artur for nearly a decade and saw his vision for a larger restaurant come to life after the COVID-19 pandemic. Reflecting on the last decade, Amelia said she’s proud of the way Artur has grown professionally since making his mark on the local dining scene. “When Art took over Phil’s, it was his first restaurant. To see him blossom and bloom how he has, not only are our customers from Phil’s extremely proud of him. I am very proud of him, too,” she said. “It’s been a

beautiful thing to watch.” Known for its home-style cooking, diverse menu and reasonable prices, Artur’s Restaurant offers a welcoming dining experience with a mix of classic American favorites and traditional Polish dishes. Inside the kitchen, Artur employs a Polish-born prep cook who makes the traditional Polish dishes from scratch, something that everyone loves. The menu features Polish favorites such as kielbasa, potato pancakes, pierogi, stuffed cabbage and pork schnitzel, alongside diner staples such as burgers, sandwiches, pasta and seafood. “Our diners love our Polish food because a lot of places don’t serve it. She makes our stuffed cabbage, all our Polish dishes, and she’s from Poland, so it’s authentic,” Amelia said. Another customer favorite is the restaurant’s weekly meatloaf special, which Amelia’s own mother looks forward to, she said. “My mom literally has to get it every single time she makes it,” she added. Regular diners make Artur’s Restaurant a special place for Amelia, who recognizes many by name, and after a handful of conversations, knows their stories, as well. “It doesn’t feel like they are regulars. I hate using that term because they’ve become more

like family and friends to all of us. If we don’t know your name, we get to know to you.” Artur’s expansive tiki bar — one of the largest in Englewood — draws a crowd for live entertainment and sports every weekend. On Sundays, the restaurant welcomes football fans with over 30 televisions
