Dearborn Street Comes Alive: October’s here, and with it comes one of Englewood’s best traditions: the return of the Englewood Farmers Market. The market isn’t just good; it’s the local favorite, hands down. Every Thursday, Pioneer Plaza on Dearborn Street transforms into a hive of small businesses, each one bringing its best. You’ll find just about everything: fresh bread, incredible cheeses, handmade pastas, soaps and candles, local honey, colorful produce, flowers and plants, Filipino and Asian specialties, kosher challah, citrus, juices, the list keeps going. Every booth tempts you with something new. Read more on page 14.

the Big Top, had the school delighted. Students plotted their outfits for weeks, alumni circled the dates, and the halls felt electric. Movie nights, wild contests, high-speed games, as it all built up to that Fridaynight football game under the lights, the one everyone waits for. There’s more: They have scheduled the Athletic Hall of Fame Induction for Friday, October 9, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on campus, celebrating the school’s legends. Details on page 38. The calendar’s packed this fall: Manasota Mystique: Derby After Dark rolls in on November 7 (see page 33),

“Bell, Book and Candle” opens at Lemon Bay Playhouse on October 14, and The Englewood Beach Waterfest splashes back October 8–11 (page 25). Whatever excites you, whether you’re drawn to food, fun, the arts, or the waterfront, Englewood’s got you covered. Take a look at our event listings and plan away. It reminds me of one of my favorite Florida fall quotes: “Fall in Florida isn’t about the leaves changing color; it’s about the temperature dropping below 80 degrees and finally being able to enjoy the outdoors again.”

ENGLEWOOD EXAMINER Time to SHiNE! Meet Deanna Dunlap, Who Makes Englewood SHiNE

Meet Deanna Dunlap, owner and instructor at SHiNE Dance Fitness and Uplift with Deanna. Her story starts in Peru, Indiana, where she was born on Grissom Air Force Base. She grew up mostly in North Manchester, Indiana, then went on to nursing school at Indiana University. After she graduated, Deanna and her husband, Ryan, settled

in Columbus, Ohio, where they spent 24 years raising their three kids and calling the Columbus and Galena area home. Ryan and Deanna have been married for 31 years. Their son Zach is 26 and lives in Tampa; Ally is 24 and settled in Nashville, and their youngest, Quincey, is 21 and finishing her

senior year at UCF in Orlando. They made their way to Florida full-time in 2020, after spending years visiting on vacations and during the summers.

SHiNE Dance Fitness is all about #morethanfitness, and honestly, that’s what keeps Deanna so excited to do what she does every day.

Before jumping into the fitness world, Deanna worked as an RN in Ohio, with experience in Labor and Delivery, the ER, and orthopedics. These days, she runs and teaches for SHiNE Dance Fitness in Englewood. SHiNE blends cardio dance with strength training in a way that’s welcoming, effective, and, above all, fun. Deanna’s passion is helping people shift from dreading workouts to actually looking forward to them and then cheering them on as they become die-hard fitness fans.

What is your most marked or distinctive characteristic?

Though she’s left nursing, Deanna still gets to help people feel better, just in a different way. Her classes aren’t just about dancing; they’re about building genuine friendships and creating a supportive, vibrant community of women.

It’s a ministry of St. David’s Episcopal Church, launched by Pat Knox back in 2008. Even after sixteen years, it’s still standing strong, a beacon of hope for folks across Englewood. Their mission digs deep: empowering the poor, the struggling, and anyone who needs a hand. The team’s right on the ground, handing out food, clothing, and whatever else folks need. Serving families, individuals, and people experiencing homelessness, the Jubilee Center doesn’t leave anyone out. When The Waverly opens its doors for the Night of Empowerment on October 17, it brings the entire community together to back an organization Englewood counts on. This isn’t just tradition; it’s lifeblood. Each year, as more families turn to Jubilee for help, the event becomes even more crucial.

Here’s what the Jubilee Center provides.

Food Pantry: Residents from both Charlotte and Sarasota counties can pick up food— non-perishables, fresh produce, frozen meat—every other week. If you’re unhoused, you can drop in weekly. They also hand out toiletries, hygiene products, and pet food when they have it. Pat’s Kindness Closet: Free clothing and shoes. Financial Aid: Short-term help with utility bills like FPL and the Englewood Water District— and referrals to other agencies. Backpack Ministry: Working with Community Presbyterian, they fill backpacks with kidfriendly, nutritious food for local students every two weeks during summer break. Money raised at The Night of Empowerment goes directly into these outreach programs, making a real difference for Englewood families. Laura Roy Fink summed it up well: “The Night of Empowerment reflects the heart of Englewood, neighbors helping neighbors. We’re grateful to The Waverly for keeping this tradition alive and making our work possible.”

Honoring the Legacy of Pat Knox This year’s event means even more, as Englewood gathers to honor Pat Knox, the woman

“The Waverly’s willingness to host Night of Empowerment is what makes the night possible,” said Laura Roy Fink, from St. David’s Jubilee Center. “On October 17, Englewood steps up. Neighbors help neighbors— that’s just how it’s always been here.” Everyone who fills the room can feel they’re part of something good. Lively conversation, generosity, a shared sense of purpose, it all adds up to genuine support for Jubilee’s work: food pantry shelves stocked, outreach programs running, emergency aid ready at hand.

who started it all. Pat’s about to move away to be closer to her daughter, and the community’s taking a moment to thank her for everything she’s done. Back in 2008, Pat took a single room at St. David’s and turned it into a lifeline for families who had nowhere else to turn. What started small has grown into the Jubilee Center; hundreds of families each year now rely on what she set in motion. Her vision was simple: treat everyone with compassion and respect. That outlook shaped Jubilee’s mission and still guides it now. “Pat built Jubilee with heart and grit,” said Laura Roy Fink. “I didn’t get to work with her directly, but every day, I feel the legacy she left behind. Her compassion is still at the core of everything we do.” Pat cares deeply for her community and for animals, too. She became known for taking care of dogs, raccoons, and just about any creature that needed help. That spirit of kindness ran through every part of her life. Jubilee’s clothing ministry now bears her name: Pat’s Kindness Closet. It’s a touchstone, a reminder that her values will keep shaping the Center for years to come. As Pat turns the page on this chapter of her life, Englewood looks back with deep thanks for her years of service. Her legacy isn’t about applause. It’s about the quiet, steady compassion that builds strong communities, inspires neighbors, and paves the way for others to make a difference. Her presence lingers in every act of generosity at Jubilee. Pat Knox proves that one person’s kindness really can change everything.

Honoring the legacy of founder, Pat Knox.

Getting involved is easy enough. You can reserve your spot at The Waverly by calling 941‑475‑3500, or you can become a sponsor and help keep the good work going.

So, what’s your story? Where do you read your REVIEW? Maybe you’ve held it atop a mountain, surrounded by clouds, or let the pages catch the breeze at the beach. Even quiet mornings at home count. It’s about the sense of adventure you bring with you. Next time you’re out and about, grab a photo with your REVIEW and send it to us. Let’s see just how far this newspaper, and our amazing readers, can go. Thanks, Maria, for carrying the REVIEW to the Windy City. We can’t wait to see where it pops up next.

October’s here, and with it comes one of Englewood’s best traditions: the return of the Englewood Farmers Market. If you’ve never been, you’re missing out. The market isn’t

just good; it’s the local favorite, hands down. It all runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays in the heart of Englewood. Each week, live music plays along Dearborn; there’s always something a little different to discover. Englewood REVIEW recently caught up with Don Musilli from the Englewood Sunset Rotary, the group that keeps the market running. According to Don, October always feels like a “soft opening.” Some vendors roll in right away, think pizza, bread, cheese, knife sharpening. Others don’t arrive until November or December because they’re busy up north or at other markets. It’s all part of the market’s rhythm. But Don expects October to buzz with energy. The past few years have seen more and more folks wandering Dearborn each Thursday, and that excitement isn’t fading.

Picture the scene: early sunlight, coffee in hand, music weaving through the air. Kids and dogs greet one another, neighbors catch up, and all kinds of people browse tables piled high with fresh food. There’s no better way to start your Thursday. Grab a pastry or a handmade treat, fill your bag with produce so fresh it was likely picked just hours ago, and don’t forget to wander hungry. Local farmers haul in the very best from Florida’s fields. Fishermen bring wild-caught seafood straight from the coast. Bakers stack tables with crusty sourdough, gluten-free cookies, and everything in between. Some vendors roll out international dishes; others offer small-batch jams, local honey, or even potted citrus trees. The whole plaza feels like a festival of what Englewood does best: food, community, music, and sunshine. And this isn’t just a quick grocery run. People come for the experience and stick around for the community. It’s a chance to meet the people behind your food and support the folks who make Englewood such a great place to live. The Rotary Club of Englewood Sunset keeps things running, and every dime from vendor fees gets funneled back into

the neighborhood. When you support the market, you’re investing in Englewood itself. Don summed it up: “I was there at the beginning; me, Marie Laforge, Ricardo Ruggiero from Mango Bistro, and Lee Perron. We kicked things off in 2011, and we picked Thursday—it’s an off day, but it let us land the best vendors. Over the years, other markets have popped up, and sure, they’ve brought some competition. But we’re different. We’re a nonprofit, and every dollar we make goes straight to our community. That’s why we tell people, start with our market first. Support Englewood. That’s our mantra.” So how did it all actually begin? Back in 2010, Marie Laforge started asking why Englewood didn’t have its own market. By 2011, with help from Ricardo Ruggiero and Mike Hutchinson, and encouragement from the Mango Bistro’s success, she pulled together a team. Lee Perron joined that summer, and before long, over a few lively dinners, they built a plan. Lee took over as manager, Mike handled the books, Marie managed marketing, and Ricardo tackled tech. Their idea quickly became a reality, and the Englewood Farmers Market was born. Jump ahead to fall 2021: The Englewood Sunset Rotary Club began managing the market, adding a focus on nutrition, education, sustainability, and a deep sense of community. You still find local organic produce, (Continued from page 11) beverages will be available for purchase on site. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is $34 for adults and $19 for ages 5–17. For tickets and ventry times, visit selby.org or call 941•366•5731. Park Closures Oct. 7-Oct. 12 Englewood Beach, Chadwick Park, and Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary Park will be closed beginning Wednesday, October 7 through Monday October 12 for the 2026 Englewood Beach Waterfest.   Englewood Charlotte Library Closure The Englewood Charlotte Library, 3450 N. top-tier baked goods, dairy, seafood, honey, herbs, prepared foods, sauces, and genuinely interesting finds every week. Their mission is clear: to champion local Florida growers and producers, with a focus on health, education, sustainable practices, and genuine community. The market partners with local organizations that make a difference: Englewood Community Care Clinic, Englewood Elementary, Florida Organic Growers Association, Helping Hand Food Bank, St. David’s Food Pantry, and more. The Englewood Community

Redevelopment Agency pitches in too. The Englewood Farmers Market runs October through May, then takes a summer break. Pioneer Plaza on Dearborn Street is the place to be on Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you’re ready for great food, sunny mornings, real community, and a market that truly gives back, you’ll want to make this a regular stop. Come see why it’s the best farmers market in Florida. Check out englewoodfarmersmarket.org for more information about the Englewood Farmers Market.

Englewood Beach Waterfest is Back: Get Ready for Radical Reefs, Butterfly Buzz, and Eco-Awesome Family Fun

Englewood Beach Waterfest is Back! Courtesy Englewood Beach Waterfest

Preparations for Englewood Beach Waterfest are in full swing and you can feel the buzz growing. Organizers are lining up some exciting additions for the Family Conservation Center, Mote Marine Laboratory’s “Radical Reefs” exhibit, a butterfly encounter, plus handson booths from Lemon Bay Conservancy. Coming off the record-breaking 2025 APBA Offshore Powerboat Championship, Waterfest, Inc. is set to return October 8–11, 2026. Last year’s races drew huge crowds. Forty-one boats battled it out over two days, roaring through tight heats with the Gulf backdrop setting the stage. It wasn’t just about the adrenaline, local businesses, civic groups, and hundreds of volunteers made their mark. Families explored educational exhibits, sampled what local shops and restaurants offer, and got a crash course in safe boating and marine conservation. “Our championship spotlighted skill, teamwork, and community pride,” said Jay Henderson, Board of Directors President. “We hosted thousands, lifted up our small businesses, and showed off Englewood’s natural beauty. Our volunteers brought the event to life. Next year? We’re aiming even higher.” Veterans and new contenders kept fans riveted, delivering photo finishes and memorable performances. Race officials

ran a tight ship, well-organized courses, clear timing, and prime viewing spots for both onshore crowds and boat spectators. Racers and fans praised the logistics, sightlines, and allaround hospitality. Ray LaBadie, Waterfest Board 1st Vice-President, summed it up: “This event shines because of our race teams, their families, and everyone who traveled here. Our dedicated board, generous sponsors, and especially 500 volunteers— without their energy, passion, and commitment, Waterfest wouldn’t be this incredible.” Ralph Young, Board 2nd VicePresident and Race Director, added: “We’re ready to keep the momentum going—2026 Waterfest, October 8–11, will be even bigger.” Money raised at the championship funds ongoing Waterfest programs, covering future spectator events, competitions, and education initiatives built to highlight and protect Englewood’s waterways. The Waterfest team remains dedicated to promoting responsible recreation, marine conservation, and deepening community ties, all through events that bring visitors and locals together. Englewood Beach Waterfest, Inc. is a Florida-based nonprofit, staging races, shows, and forums for water sports fans. Their mission? Host high-

quality events, boost the local economy, and foster environmental awareness.

Sun, Sand, and Sonic Booms: The 2026 Florida International Air Show Takes Off This November brings some serious talent and horsepower. International aerobatic pilot Aarron Deliu is back, along with Red Bull pilot Kevin Coleman, the Franklin Flying Circus, The Chuters Jump Team, and the MIG-17’s unforgettable howl. You won’t just see them, you’ll feel them.

When you think about weekends in Southwest Florida, most people picture beaches and sunshine, but few experiences put you right next to roaring aircraft, let you watch daredevils twist through the sky, and share that kind of thrill with the whole family.

The Chuters Jump Team Courtesy Florida International Air Show

Precision stunts, energetic routines, parachutes popping open just above the runway, and the ear-splitting rumble of historic jets, it’s all there. Forget watching airshows on your screen. This is the real thing, live and impossible to duplicate.

The 2026 Florida International Air Show, happening November 7 and 8 at Punta Gorda Airport, does all that and more.

But the excitement isn’t just in the sky. On the ground, families find plenty to do, from exploring static aircraft displays, meeting exhibitors, sampling food trucks, and diving into hands-on aviation activities and merchandise. Kids and adults get a closer look at flight, tech, and aviation careers, and maybe spark a lifelong interest.

This year, the show’s lineup

The Florida International

Air Show isn’t just about airplanes; it’s about bringing people together and connecting them to aviation’s roots in the community. “For a lot of guests, the Air Show means more than watching airplanes fly,” says Denise Dull, the show’s president. “It’s the sound and spectacle, meeting the performers, wandering among the displays, and making memories that stick with families long after the show.” The tradition continues: aviation, education, entertainment, and community, all rolled into one unforgettable weekend at Punta Gorda Airport. 2026 Florida International Air Show November 7–8, 2026 Punta Gorda Airport Gates open at 9:00 a.m. on both days.
