St. Patrick’s Day Suddenly, everyone’s a wee bit Irish, at
least for the holiday. Around here, Englewood’s beloved Dolphin likes to go by “Dolphin O’Dearborn” just for the occasion. The Artist Colony sponsored the community art display, “Feathers and Flippers.” This whimsical piece is “Strolling on the Beach,” a colorful creation by Kathy Peters and Sydney Martin. Sham-Rocks and Shenanigans: Why Everyone’s Irish on March 17 Happy St. Patrick’s Day: the one day everyone suddenly discovers their inner-Irish.
It goes on for over five hours. It’s practically a marathon.
4. How much green dye does it take to turn the Chicago River green?
Remember, as kids, when you had to wear green or risk a sneaky pinch? It’s a day for playful pranks and goofy jokes, just like those mischievous leprechauns.
They use 40 pounds of green vegetable dye every year. 5. What do some historians think St. Patrick’s real name was?
Why shouldn’t you iron a fourleaf clover? Because you don’t want to press your luck. What do you call a fake Irish stone? A sham-rock. If you see an Irishman doubled over laughing, you know he’s just Dublin over with laughter. That’s leprechaun humor at its finest. Did you know that the first St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the United States was held in Florida? Most people think the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in America Dearborn Street’s Scarlett O’Heron (The Dearborn Street art featured is a series of sculptures called “Feathers and Flippers” sponsored by The Artist Colony.)

Englewood doesn’t have its own legendary St. Patrick’s Day origin story, but it’s still part of this rich Florida tradition. These days, the town joins in with the rest of Southwest Florida to celebrate. You’ll find live music, plenty of Irishthemed food, corned beef and cabbage, of course, and folks gathering at local pubs and community centers. St. Patrick’s Day is a big deal for the local crowd, especially retirees and snowbirds who love a good reason to get together. And yes, you’ll spot a lot of green. That whole “wear green or get pinched” tradition? It’s actually more of an American invention than an Irish one, but it’s all part of the fun.

Some say his real name was Maewyn Succat.
Back in 1600, St. Augustine, Florida, hosted the earliest known St. Patrick’s Day celebration in what would become the United States. A year later, on March 17, 1601, the town held the first parade, organized by an Irish priest named Ricardo Artur. That’s over 160 years before New York ever saw one. Back then, it wasn’t about green beer or big floats. The day was a religious feast honoring Ireland’s patron saint, San Patricio, long before the holiday turned into the lively, secular bash we know today.
Looking for something beyond the usual McDonald’s Shamrock Shake this holiday? Englewood’s got you covered. All over town, local spots are putting their own spin on the celebration: think hearty corned beef and cabbage, festive cookies, bakery treats, and even a few unexpected drinks to go with your classic green beer. There’s no shortage of flavor or fun here.
6. According to legend, what happened during one of St. Patrick’s hillside sermons? The story goes that while he was speaking, he chased all the snakes out into the sea. 7. What color was first connected to St. Patrick? Blue, believe it or not. 8. What did St. Patrick use to explain the Holy Trinity, according to legend? He used the shamrock. 9. What’s another name for Ireland? People call it “The Emerald Isle.” 10. What does St. Patrick’s name actually mean? “Patricius” comes from Latin and means “father figure.” 11. Why did Belfast wait until 1998 to hold a St. Patrick’s Day parade? Protestant hostility toward Irish national symbols kept the parade away for years. 12. How many Americans send St. Patrick’s Day cards each year, according to Hallmark? A huge 12 million people exchange cards.
St. Patrick’s Day Trivia 1. What’s another name for St. Patrick’s Day? People also call it the Feast of Saint Patrick. 2. Where was Saint Patrick actually born? He was born in Roman Britain, which now means somewhere in England, Scotland, or Wales. 3. How long does the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade last?

13. Why did St. Patrick’s Day happen in May instead of March once? In 2001, a foot-and-mouth outbreak hit Ireland, so Dublin’s parade moved to May. Even then, 1.2 million people showed
up.

Behind 10 Years of Superior Ratings: A Conversation with Lemon Bay’s Music Director, Mr. Eyrich student leaders who set the pace, and families who never stop supporting from the sidelines. What’s really impressive? It’s not just the same group year after year. New students step up, learn from those before them, and set an even higher standard. Every class honors the tradition, then pushes for more. Englewood REVIEW sat down with Mr. Eyrich, the director of Lemon Bay High School’s instrumental music program: Lemon Bay High School Symphonic Winds, conducted by Mr. Eyrich
Funding for Florida’s arts education continues to shrink. Florida schools are experiencing another complicated year for 2025–2026; while multiple state grants are back, they’re not enough. At the local level, arts and music programs are still being squeezed. School budgets are tight, especially when enrollment drops. Teaching artists, educators who teach children each day how to play instruments, face the
greatest challenges. Nonprofits are scrambling for private donations just to keep these programs alive. Lemon Bay High School Symphonic Winds Losing school bands and instrumental music programs is tough on everyone. But not every story is grim. Lemon Bay High School’s instrumental music program is still going strong.
At the FBA District 11 Concert Band Music Performance Assessment, Lemon Bay’s Symphonic Winds pulled off another clean sweep: straight superior ratings, again. Ten years running. That’s a decade of students walking onto that stage, giving their all, and making the school and the entire community proud. You don’t get results like that by accident. It takes relentless hard work, hours of practice,
ER: Mr. Eyrich, Congratulations on ten years of superiors, that’s wonderful. Mr. Eyrich: Thank you. ER: How long have you been the band director at Lemon Bay High School?
small steps toward a goal over a long period of time. ER: Tell me about the students. Sometimes you can chalk up success to, “Okay, we had this really great group this year.” But ten years of superiors, that comes down to great leadership. Mr. Eyrich: The students come from all backgrounds, right? So you’ve got some kids who are going to make the All-State band and then you’ve got some kids who might not be the best players but they’re good section players. It takes all kinds of kids, and I think the biggest thing is the working together and the mentorship that we have in the program. It’s really something to see.
ER: You must be so proud. How do you feel about all of this? Ten years of superiors, what does that mean to you all?
I’ve got a great feeder program, his name’s Tim Ostrow over at L.A. Ainger Middle School. He’s a big part of this because he gets the kids fundamentally very well prepared. He does a lot of the fundamental teaching, and we do a good deal of that here in high school.
Mr. Eyrich: Well, it’s certainly a big accomplishment and it reflects the hard work of hundreds of students over that time period, and their commitment. Once they’re in here, they work really hard, and we’ve had a lot of consistency. At the end of the day, it’s taking
But once they get here, you’ve got kids who know how to play their instruments already at a high level and they organize their own section rehearsals outside of class. I’m always seeing kids working together in the band room trying to get better at the music.
Mr. Eyrich: This is my ninth year at Lemon Bay.

I would really say that a big part of the success is that the students have really taken ownership of the band program. That’s a huge deal because if they don’t want to do it, then they’re either going to not do it anymore, they’ll just quit, or they won’t be as responsive and they won’t work as hard. I see the students taking ownership and helping each other out, without even needing to be asked. They go above and beyond my expectations. They ask me, “Hey, we want to stay after school for a couple of hours and really work on this.” The initiative that takes is something special, and I think they know what’s at stake every year, that they’ve got this tradition of excellence that they’ve established, and they want it even more than I do in some cases. ER: I love what you said about the teamwork, that not everyone’s the star player, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be an important part of that section. I love that you have that attitude and you share that message with them, because you don’t have to be a superstar to be a part of the team, to be a part of the band. Mr. Eyrich: Of course, and that’s really one of the things that sets us apart from something like athletics, right? How many kids can be on a football field at one time? You know, it’s eleven on each side. Basketball, same thing, five on each side, right? And then you’ve always got a number of kids that are just riding the pines, riding the bench. In band we don’t have a bench. We do have ability-based ensembles. We’ve got a top group; we’ve got a secondary group with a little more fundamental teaching going on with more intermediate students. But in general, especially when we operate as a marching band

or even as a high-level concert band, you really need everyone to be there and be playing, and that’s definitely a challenge sometimes because some kids have good days and bad days. The emphasis is, “If you’re in band you’re going to get playing time. Your skills are going to be used.” Versus, “Well, I’m going to pay all this money for pads and cleats and things like that and my kid’s going to get one at-bat in the game.” ER: I couldn’t agree more. I always say that the arts are the best team sports around. But to achieve superior ratings 10 years in a row, what’s your secret? How do you incentivize, and how do you inspire them? Mr. Eyrich: Well, I would say keeping the expectations very high and never back down on that. We talk a lot about tone in the band and playing with a good tone quality and that’s really where it starts. We focus a lot on tone and how to produce high-quality sounds on your instrument and make characteristic sounds. So if you’re playing a clarinet does it sound like a clarinet or does it sound like a kazoo? I would say that it’s the high expectations and not taking anything less, because you don’t know what kids are capable of until you push them. And I think in many respects in public education, not necessarily Lemon Bay because we’re still the best high school in the county, but in many areas we are reducing the standards so that more people can meet them. We talk a lot about how the standard in the band room is different than a standard in like a physics class, or a math class. If you’ve got two kids who are sitting next to each other and one earns a 100% on a test and the other one earns a 0%, the person that earned the A gets the A and the person that earned the 0 gets the F. Well, in
band if you’ve got one person doing 100% work and one person doing 0% work then that averages out to an F.
students on their tremendous success.
It’s getting them to buy into the team mentality and saying, “Look, if we’re a band that’s doing C-work and getting a 70%, that means that 30% of the notes are being played wrong.” So, we really strive to do that A-level work.
So here’s to the musicians, the
I’ve got a sign on my door, and it says, “To those who enter, you’re subject to the unrelenting expectations of high-quality music,” or something like that. And once the students understand that that’s the expectation, they begin to push each other in a positive way, to say “Hey, we got to get this done, he’s not going to accept that quality of work.” I would say that’s the biggest thing. ER: That’s so wise. People rise to the level of expectation. Mr. Eyrich: Exactly, and none of this happens in a vacuum. None of this would be possible without the strong parent support, and we couldn’t do it without the support we’ve received over the years from the community, whether it’s folks attending our concerts or attending our fundraisers to help us go on great trips for the kids or afford instruments. FAME was a big thing for many years and then we’ve got a good thing going with the Artist Colony over there on the Stage at the Park. I would say it’s really due to the community support and the support that the school at large enjoys that allows us to really support these students and maintain the quality of the programs. That’s huge and I know that’s going to continue because that’s who Englewood is. ER: Thank you so much for your time, Mr. Eyrich, and please extend our congratulations to all your
Mr. Eyrich: Thank you, I will.
directors, the entire community and everyone at Lemon Bay High School who believes in these students and keeps this legacy alive. They’ve earned it.

The Day the Nest Fell Silent: F23’s Disappearance Leaves Viewers Reeling

Between Hope and Loss: SWFL Eagle Cam Community Responds to F23’s Disappearance The news hit hard. F23, the famous Southwest Florida bald eagle, is gone. After days missing, everyone who tuned in to the SWFL Eagle Cam had to face it: she’s presumed dead. The timing made it worse. Just days earlier, she’d welcomed a new eaglet with her mate, M15. Now, that nest feels emptier than ever. The people running the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam in Fort Myers broke the news on March 3. They found an eagle’s body about two miles from the nest. All signs point to F23, though they’re still waiting on final confirmation. The Cam’s Facebook post said it best: “This is a deeply sad day for our community.” F23 wasn’t around long, just two and a half seasons, but she made her mark. She was eager, devoted, and cared fiercely for her family. The last time anyone saw F23 was Friday morning, February 27, just after 8 a.m. By Sunday, the Cam team let their followers know she hadn’t shown up on camera. They reached out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and CROW for help, but the outcome speaks for itself. No cause of death yet, but the location and timing say it all.
F23’s life wasn’t easy. Last year, she and M15 both caught bird flu, losing their eaglets. It was brutal, but these two pulled through. In December, they welcomed a new eaglet, E26. Things finally looked up, at least for a while. Now, M15 is back to solo parenting. The thing is, he’s been here before. Just last year, his first mate, Harriet, vanished after eight years together. He raised those eaglets alone, too, and people all over the world watched him do it. The Eagle Cam livestream has drawn over 233 million viewers, all tuning in to witness every heartbreak and triumph. But F23 stood out. She wasn’t just another eagle. She was a force, always alert, fiercely protective, and totally committed to her nest. When word broke that a dead eagle had turned up near the nest, it felt like a punch to the gut. M15 kept coming back, waiting on the U-branch, sometimes bringing food, as if he still hoped she’d return. Viewers noticed. The nest felt different. Quieter. The loss was everywhere. People didn’t just watch F23, they rooted for her. She was a symbol of resilience, especially after all she’d survived. Now, as the wind moves through
those tall pines in North Fort Myers, it’s hard not to feel the emptiness. For two and a half seasons, F23 was the heart of that nest. She came in after Harriet disappeared, stepped up, and made it her home. Her devotion to M15 and her eaglets was always clear.
community is grieving, but F23’s impact is everywhere: the sturdy nest, the young eaglet, the memories she gave to everyone watching. F23 didn’t just fill a void. She
built something of her own. Even in the wild, with no promises, she showed everyone there’s beauty and courage in every flight. Fly high, F23. You earned it.

Englewood REVIEW readers grieve the loss of F23 Our readers have reached out with comments on social media, sharing their grief: “This has been a loss that brings a lot of tears to my eyes, and hasn’t stopped yet,” says one reader. “My heart is overwhelmed with grief. No words,” says another. “She was a very magnificent lady and so beautiful,” along with another heartfelt sentiment, “I feel like one of my own animals has died.” It all changed in an instant. On February 27, viewers saw F23 fly east with M15. Only M15 came back. For days, fans waited, hoping for a miracle. Then came the news: a dead eagle, likely F23, found less than two miles away. It appears as if a car hit her, a harsh reminder of the risks these birds face near busy roads. Still, F23 leaves a legacy. She fought through illness, loss, and hardship. This year, E26 was thriving, branching out for the first time. Now, M15 keeps the nest going, just like before. The SWFL Eagle Cam

SHORE & KAYAK FISHING BY KIMBALL & LES BEERY
Kayak Launches in Southwest Florida
In winter, the trestles and docks near the pass are populated with sheepshead. South along the shoreline, docks in Peekins Cove offer wind protection when the afternoon sea breeze develops. The sandbar is productive for redfish, while the docks are good for snook and occasionally grouper. Additional Resources and Tips
For more kayak launch locations and fishing tips, refer to our waterproof pocket guide. Page 17 provides information on suitable launches for various wind directions, helping kayak anglers find calm waters. The guide, titled “Angler’s Guide to Kayak Fishing in Southwest Florida—Sarasota Bay to Pine Island,” is available both locally and on Amazon.

Rent Me Florida Southwest Florida, particularly Lemon Bay and Charlotte Harbor, is a prime destination for kayak anglers and paddlers. The region’s sheltered bays and backwaters offer a variety of habitats to explore and fish. However, not all kayak launches provide the same experience. Based on our regular outings and consideration of wind and tides, we have identified a few preferred launch sites. Kayaking Lemon Bay: Seasonal Strategies In winter, prevailing northern winds can make kayaking on Lemon Bay challenging. During this season, we focus on the protected bays and inlets along the east side of Lemon Bay. Our top launch spot in winter is Oyster Creek near Lemon Bay High School. From this launch, it is a short paddle to Lemon Bay and the oyster bars to the north near Cedar Point Environmental Park. When winds become a concern, we paddle up the creek to target mangrove shorelines and docks. The main target species in this area are redfish around the oyster bars and trout on the deeper grass flats toward the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). On calm, windless days, it is possible to make the 1.1 mile crossing to Stump Pass, but caution should be exercised when crossing the ICW. Lemon Bay Park Launch for
Easterly Winds When winds come from the east, launching at Lemon Bay Park is highly recommended. A sandbar and canal entrance just south of the launch offer productive spots for trout, snook, redfish, and pompano. About half a mile north of the launch, two mangrove and oyster islands provide an ideal location for a lunch break. These islands and surrounding bars are frequented by gamefish targeting bait moving through the area. A wadable sandbar extends westward toward the ICW, making it a fantastic location for fly fishing, especially when schools of mackerel or jacks are present. Blind Pass Launches and Summer Conditions During the warmer months, afternoon sea breezes typically make the western shore of Lemon Bay the sheltered side. There are two kayak launches at Blind Pass on the bay side. Whether launching from the northern or southern spot, paddlers can access protected mangrove shorelines, especially with a sea breeze. We often choose the southern launch, fishing the protected bay before heading toward the ICW. The shallow flats between the launches and the ICW are excellent for targeting trout, even without a kayak. The boat
dock channel and the dock itself offer shelter when northern winds intensify, and we have experienced success catching snook directly from the dock. Gasparilla Island Launches Access to kayak launches on Gasparilla Island has become more limited due to new parking restrictions at the 19th Street launch in Lee County, previously one of our favorites. Further north, the Boca Grande Fishing Pier in Charlotte County remains unaffected by these restrictions and provides a great alternative. This pier launch places anglers on Gasparilla Sound near the old railroad trestle and just east of a large sandbar—both excellent fishing spots. The proximity to Gasparilla Pass results in strong tidal flows, making it a top location for kayak anglers.

All Veterans - All Families Cremations is a local provider of dignified, affordable cremation services, honoring veterans with a military credit but serving all families with care. Open since October 2017, Cathy Cornish, a St. Petersburg College graduate of mortuary science and a licensed funeral director since 2017, directs the All Veterans All Families Englewood office. While the death industry is changing, Cornish believes cremation as a direct service should be more affordable than many of the options other funeral homes provide. Working with lower overhead, Cornish offers cremation services at an affordable cost, while honoring families with dignity and respect. Background Cornish earned her bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2012 from the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, with a focus on psychology and religious studies. For over 30 years, Cornish has worked in various administrative
fields, including administrative assistance, payroll, employee retirement board member and designed a newsletter publication for the City of Venice Utilities Department. Devoted to the community, Cornish has also served the Englewood, Venice, and North Port areas in a volunteer capacity with various organizations for over three decades. In 2016, Cornish obtained certification as a Certified Funeral Celebrant from Insight Books, furthering her education in the mortuary field. Throughout her studies, work experience, and volunteer capacity, Cornish has served people, which has echoed in the service and compassion she exemplifies at All Veterans - All Families Cremations. Purpose Partnering with a full-service funeral home, All Veterans All Families, in Sarasota, both offices simplify end-of-life arrangements, offering the care and compassion of a smaller, local provider in mortuary services.
In Englewood, All Veterans - All Families Cremations provides direct cremation services and upfront, affordable prices under the direction and dedication of Cornish, who has lived in Englewood for over four decades. “I care about your loved one like you cared about your loved one. And I want to make sure the little, tiny piece that I can do to help in this very difficult time. If I can make that piece gentle, professional, comfortable, safe, not scary, I have done my job. And I really believe my psychology background helps me with that,” says Cornish. One of the biggest benefits of cremation is the luxury of time. You can plan services for a special occasion or keep remains at home for extended periods. The Englewood office, located at 693 Old Englewood Road, Suite B, offers discounted cremations for veterans. You can find all prices and cremation options at allvetscremations.com.
