It’s summer in Englewood, Florida, and as the old song says, “and the livin’ is easy.” The crowds have thinned out, the beaches look untouched, and one can finally breathe. This is classic Gulf Coast time: slow days, jaw-dropping sunsets, soft sand, and that precious laid-back vibe.

Locals know these months are something special. They spread out towels on Englewood Beach, or head down to Stump Pass to walk quiet trails, maybe

catch the sight of sea turtles nesting in the sand. Blind Pass is perfect if you’re into scavenger hunts, fossilized shark teeth just wash up here, little dark treasures you sift from the surf. If you like the water, there’s no shortage of things to do. Kayak or paddleboard Lemon Bay, follow the Blueway Trails, and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and manatees gliding past. It’s all right at your doorstep, barely any tourists in sight.

The town might feel quieter in summer, but Englewood’s restaurants and local pubs are still buzzing. Grab a bite, catch some live music, and linger a little longer, since no one’s in a rush when it’s hot.

And when you want a change of scenery, we’re sitting on a gold mine for day trips. Drive out to see Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, the wild art at the Dali Museum up in St. Pete, the eclectic main streets in Arcadia, or the old-Florida

wonders of Homosassa Springs. You don’t even have to consider theme parks, even though they’re just a tank of gas away if you want them. Summer in Englewood is the simple escape you remember long after your suntan fades.

This edition of Englewood REVIEW contains many can’tmiss stories, from cheering on our Lemon Bay High School graduates to preparing for the 2026 hurricane season. Be sure to check out the story on page

9, called “Uncovering the Past: ‘Make Englewood Nude Again’ Fundraiser.” No, it’s not about resurrecting nude beaches.

The creative Jessica Souza, broker and co-owner at Paradise Exclusive Real Estate, came up with the quirky name to grab attention for a good cause, raising funds for Lemon Bay Historical Society. Englewood REVIEW wishes everyone a happy June.

ENGLEWOOD EXAMINER

Meet Jerry Kuhn: Navigating Life’s Deepest Transitions at Lemon Bay Mental Wellness Center

I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, and after serving over 23 years in the U.S. Navy, I settled in the Venice/Englewood area in 2010. I married my wife, Dana, in 2013, and we are a blended family. We recently became empty nesters.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and founded Lemon Bay Mental Wellness Center in Englewood in 2017, where I focus on helping adolescents, adults, couples, and veterans navigate anxiety, trauma, depression, and life transitions

with compassionate, grounded support.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in corporate leadership and training, and as a school counselor; these experiences continue to shape my practical, down-to-earth approach to helping others.

What is your most marked or distinctive characteristic?

Probably my ability to stay grounded and calm when life gets heavy. People often tell me they feel safe opening up because I meet them without

judgment and without trying to “fix” them too quickly.

What do you most value in your friends?

Authenticity, loyalty, and the ability to have real conversations. I value people who show up consistently and can laugh, struggle, and grow honestly together.

Who are your favorite writers?

I’m drawn to writers who speak honestly about resilience, meaning, and human nature— people like Viktor Frankl, C.S. Lewis, and Ernest Hemingway. I appreciate writing that feels grounded, thoughtful, and deeply human.

Who is your hero of fiction?

Atticus Finch. Calm under pressure, guided by integrity, and willing to stand firm for what is right even when it’s unpopular.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

Abraham Lincoln. Not because of politics, but because of his resilience, humility, and ability to carry responsibility through difficult times while still holding compassion for people.

Who are your heroes in real life?

Veterans, first responders, teachers, parents quietly sacrificing for their families, and people who survive hardship without losing their humanity. I also deeply respect those who ask for help when life becomes overwhelming—that takes real courage.

What are your favorite names?

I tend to like timeless, grounded names—James, Grace, Daniel,

Claire, and names connected to family history and meaning rather than trends.

What is it that you most dislike?

Dishonesty, arrogance, and people making others feel small. I also dislike how disconnected and rushed the world can feel sometimes.

What is your greatest regret?

Spending periods of my life believing I had to carry everything alone instead of letting people support me. Strength matters, but connection does too.

What is your motto?

“You’re not broken—you’re human.”

Life can wound us, but healing often begins when we stop treating ourselves like problems to solve and start treating ourselves with honesty and compassion.

Every edition, Englewood REVIEW spotlights someone who stands out in the community. We ask each person to tackle The Proust Questionnaire; a classic set of questions created by Marcel Proust, the French writer.

Local acupuncture clinic is treating the untreatable, peripheral neuropathy with incredible results!

my doctor, the specialists, the pain institute, told me there was no cure. How are you supposed to live your life knowing that everyday brings pain and suffering?”

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

Most peripheral neuropathy sufferers experience a heightened sensitivity to touch making it almost impossible for those diagnosed to even wear shoes, much less enjoy life

“It was like walking on sharp river rocks. I barely left my recliner ” shares David, whose experience is not uncommon for those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy

That is until he found Lauren Milligan of Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. Dr. Milligan and her staff have pioneered a cutting edge, medical solution to treat neuropathy, eliminate or greatly reduce its symptoms and give people their lives back. And they’re doing it without the use of prescription medications and invasive surgeries

“Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves, preventing them from dying off,” tells Dr. Milligan. “We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent

ATP therapy is like watering a plant. This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair.”

Three months later David is thrilled with his progress, “I can walk barefoot on the beach again!”

Success stories like David’s are not atypical for the staff at Sage Point AIM “We have a 87% success rate in treating neuropathy,” shares Dr Milligan

The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation So long as you have not sustained more than 90% nerve damage Sage Point AIM

offers hope where there once was none.

While David’s peripheral neuropathy was idiopathic, meaning the cause is unknown, Dr. Milligan’s treatments can also help people whose neuropathy is caused by diabetes or chemotherapy

“We have seen tremendous success in treating neuropathy of all types through very personalized treatments, specifically tailored to treat each individual case.”

To schedule a consultation and complete evaluation, call (941) 451 - 8154 but do so quickly because Sage Point AIM is taking a limited number of new neuropathy patients For more information and to take advantage of their new patient offer visit SagePointAcu.com.

Nude beach? Englewood? Say it isn’t so.

It all began at The Smoked Mullet Awards on Friday, May 15, 2026. Nancy Wille and Esther Horton took the stage and completely captivated the crowd with their fascinating, funny stories of Englewood’s past. Several times, the topic of Englewood’s old nude beaches came up, and the audience couldn’t get enough.

There’s genuine history there. Englewood, Florida wasn’t always just a sleepy beach town. It once thrived as an early center for naturist retreats and nudist resorts. These days, you won’t find any official nude beaches, but back in the day, the remote stretches of Manasota Key offered a unique getaway for those who wanted to live out that laid-back, “Old Florida” lifestyle. In the 1930s, people called it Pine Ridge or Sea Island. One spot, “The Sea Island Sanctuary,” went as far as advertising total privacy and 24-hour nudism along the Gulf. Imagine walking the beach as long as you wanted, just sun, sand, and, well, freedom. Jessica Souza, broker and co-

owner at Paradise Exclusive Real Estate, left the event buzzing with ideas. “I attended the Secret Society of Smoked Mullets luncheon, thanks to the Englewood Chamber, and it’s always a highlight hearing Esther and Nancy paint such a vivid picture of our past,” she said.

Listening to those stories, especially the ones about the nudist colony, sparked something. Jessica wanted to capture that playful, unique Old Florida energy, to remind locals and newcomers what makes Englewood one-of-akind. That’s how the “Make Englewood Nude Again” campaign was born: playful, a little “cheeky” (pun intended), and devoted to honoring our roots. Plus, all proceeds from the shirts go straight to the Lemon Bay Historical Society, fueling efforts to keep Englewood’s stories alive for future generations. This is about remembering who we are. Before the crowds, before the development, before Florida went glossy, folks here

lived barefoot with salty air, big sunsets, and a community that just wanted to keep things simple.

That spirit is still here, if you know where to look.

Every shirt sold helps the Lemon Bay Historical Society protect our stories, share them so that all of us, especially our children, remember and learn from our history.

Want to join in? Grab a “Make Englewood Nude Again” t-shirt, and help celebrate a little piece of local magic.

Jessica summed it up perfectly: “Today’s stories at the Secret Society of Smoked Mullets award luncheon were a reminder that Englewood has always marched to the beat of its own drum, and honestly, that’s part of its magic. Because let’s be honest, life’s just better barefoot.”

Storm Surge Poles Installed Sarasota County has installed storm surge poles on Siesta and Manasota beaches, with a third planned for North Jetty Beach, to help residents and visitors better understand the potential height of storm surge ahead of hurricane season. Each pole features colorcoded markings aligned with the National Hurricane Center’s risk system, indicating water levels from 1 to more than 9 feet above ground, along with informational displays explaining

the scale. Officials say storm surge remains one of the most dangerous aspects of hurricanes, capable of causing severe flooding, erosion and structural damage, even in inland areas along rivers and canals. The initiative follows recent storms, including Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton in 2024, which brought significant surge levels across the county. Emergency Management leaders emphasized the importance of knowing evacuation zones and preparing plans in advance, encouraging the public to stay informed throughout hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, by signing up for alerts and accessing preparedness resources online.

From Scales to Tails: How to Pack the Perfect Go-Bag for Your Furry Friends

As Floridians prepare for hurricane season, it’s important to think ahead and include your furry (and furless) friends in your hurricane preparedness planning.

Your Pet’s Hurricane GoBag

Start by putting together an emergency go-bag. Gather enough food and water for at least a week to ten days. That’s one gallon of water per pet per day, and don’t forget sealed, non-perishable food. Medications are easy to overlook in a rush, so pack at least two weeks’ worth, sealed in something waterproof. You’ll also need printed vaccine records and that allimportant rabies certificate. Many pet-friendly shelters won’t let you in without proof.

Don’t stop there. Toss in a few comfort items, maybe your pet’s favorite blanket or toy. Include travel bowls,

something for cleaning up, and if you have a cat, litter and a portable pan. Having these little touches can help your animal stay calm in chaos.

ID is critical. Register your pet’s microchip and keep your contact information current. Check that collar, too. The ID tag needs your current cell number. Slip a recent photo of you with your pet into the gobag; it makes reunions much easier if you get separated. Know your shelter options before the storm. Public shelters and pet-friendly hotels fill up in a hurry. Print a list of nearby boarding places, hotels, and vets outside your area. Don’t wait to look these up at the last minute. Most shelters insist you bring your own crate or carrier. It’s first-come, first-served and vaccination records are nonnegotiable.

Include your furry (and furless) friends in your hurricane preparedness planning.

Before the storm hits, bring your pets inside early. Get them to a safe spot without windows. If you need to leave in a hurry, have a carrier and a slip leash ready where you can grab them. Always check the latest list of open shelters from the county’s emergency

management office or the state disaster guide as the storm approaches.

Never leave animals behind when there’s an evacuation order. Your pets depend on you to make these calls and keep them safe.

We are pleased to announce a financial assistance grant is now available to residents who live within our service area. The grant is in addition to our no-cost breast cancer detection tests.

Venetian Harmony Chorus Charms Orlando Crowds to Win Audience Favorite

Englewood, Venice, and the nearby communities, sharing their music at local events and celebrations.

Crossword Puzzle

On May 16, 2026, Venetian Harmony Chorus took the stage at the SingUnited International Regional 9 Competition in Orlando. Thirteen choruses and many quartets gathered to perform. The group presented a three-song “entertainment package,” weaving humor and storytelling through Scotland with the help of emcees, Jennifer Falkner, Jennifer Wiederhold, and Holly O’Keefe. That night, the audience awarded them the 2026 Region 9 Bravo Chorus Award, their favorite performance.

Venetian Harmony Chorus brings together women who love singing a cappella, specializing in the Barbershop style. They perform all over

Their set featured beloved tunes: “Loch Lomond,” “Almost Like Being In Love” (which included a lively Scottish dance by Jean Bednar), and “The Skye Boat Song,” famous from the TV show Outlander. All three songs captured the crowd and brought a bit of Scotland to Orlando.

Venetian Harmony Chorus is a non-profit affiliate of Sweet Adelines International, and more than anything, they love singing for the community and having fun together. When they rehearse, it feels less like practice and more like a gathering of friends. Music

provides connection, as do laughter and support for one another.

If you enjoy singing, or if you just want to see what they’re all about, they invite you to join them for a rehearsal. Mondays at 6:30 p.m., you’ll find them in the Community Hall behind Christ Lutheran Church at 701 N. Indiana Ave, Englewood. Visitors are always welcome. Come by, listen in, and sing along. Whether you’re curious about joining or want to book Venetian Harmony Chorus for your next event, stop in and say hello. They’d love to meet you. Staying Positive, Planning Ahead: 2026’s Below-Average Storm Forecast is Reassuring News for Englewood

We all know the Englewood REVIEW stands by its motto: “Always Local…Always Positive.” Hurricane season might make people uneasy, but being prepared is as positive as it gets.

The official hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. This year, NOAA brings some encouraging news: their outlook for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season calls for below-normal activity, thanks to developing El Niño conditions. Forecasters see just a 10% chance of an above-normal season, a 35% chance of near-

normal, and a 55% chance we’ll see fewer storms than usual. For context, an average season usually brings 14 named storms.

NOAA expects between eight and fourteen named storms, with three to six hurricanes, and one to three major hurricanes.

A storm gets a name when sustained winds hit at least 39 mph, regardless of whether it ever reaches land. Major hurricanes are those that reach Category 3 strength or higher.

Meteorologists from Colorado State University echo NOAA’s projection, citing the same El

Niño climate pattern. El Niño means warmer-than-average Pacific Ocean temperatures, which boosts wind shear over the Caribbean and Atlantic. Strong wind shear often keeps Atlantic storms weaker and less frequent.

“The chance of development remains very low in the short term due to strong wind shear,”

AccuWeather’s lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said “However, as the shear relaxes, conditions could become more favorable for an area of low pressure to develop in the Gulf or the western Caribbean.”

Still, a below-average season shouldn’t breed complacency. It only takes one hurricane to do actual damage. After all, when the Gulf Coast saw Hurricane Charley in 2004, El Niño was in full swing, and that storm reshaped lives. Staying alert and prepared remains key, no matter what the outlook says.

Be Aware, Be Ready, Be Safe

Living in Englewood, or anywhere on the southwest coast of Florida, means you have to be on your toes during hurricane season. Preparation here isn’t just smart; it’s necessary, and the way you prepare should suit both you and your location.

Start with the basics: people and pets, prescriptions, important papers, personal needs, and anything irreplaceable. Get your home ready before a storm ever hits the forecast, and always, always listen to local evacuation instructions. Englewood’s spot along the Gulf makes it extra vulnerable to storm surge.

First, know your zone and have an evacuation plan. Englewood falls in Charlotte County, so look up your exact address using the county’s “Know Your Zone” tool to see if you’re in a danger zone for flooding. Living in a mobile home, RV, or on a boat? Don’t wait, evacuate as soon as the order comes, regardless of your assigned zone. Think ahead: plan where you’ll go, maybe a friend’s place out of the flood zone. Public shelters exist, but only count on them if you have no other options.

Next, focus on your property Bring inside anything that isn’t bolted down: chairs, trash cans, yard decorations. In hurricane winds, these things turn dangerous. If your windows lack impact-resistant glass or shutters, buy plywood, cut it to size, and prepare it well in advance. Don’t forget the trees. Cut back dead branches and anything overhanging your house to lower the risk of roof or power line damage.

Stock up on supplies. You’ll need at least a week’s worth for everyone, including pets. Store a

gallon of water a day per person. Choose food that won’t spoil and doesn’t need cooking. Make sure you refill prescriptions and have a solid first-aid kit. Light and power are easy to lose, so stash flashlights, spare batteries, a NOAA Weather Radio with batteries or a hand crank, and fully charged power banks. For comfort and hygiene, you’ll want sanitizer, wet wipes, big trash bags, and a manual can opener. Take care of your finances and documents, too. Keep IDs, insurance papers, medical records, and passports dry by storing them in a waterproof container you can seal tightly. Bring some physical cash. After a big storm, ATMs and card readers don’t work, and you’ll need some spending power. Finally, sign up for local alerts. Charlotte County’s AlertCharlotte system keeps you updated on evacuations and urgent news. If you or someone in your household will need help to evacuate because of a disability, medical device, or other special needs. Register with the county’s Special Needs Registry well in advance. That way, you’re not scrambling when the storm is already on its way.

If you missed any of the community hurricane expos and need more information, the National Weather Service meteorologists across the state of Florida are teaming up before the peak of hurricane season to review recommended tropical readiness, preparedness, response, and recovery actions. The dates are July 27 through 30, and information can be found at hurricanes.gov or weather.gov. The classes are free and virtual.

Living in Englewood comes with its benefits and challenges. We know first-hand that hurricanes aren’t just stories on the news; they’re a part of life. Being prepared matters. And preparation isn’t just about piling up canned food or batteries; it’s knowing what could happen, what actually works to protect your home, and making sure the people you care about stay safe when storms hit. Wishing us all a safe and uneventful 2026 hurricane season.

One Last Rodeo: LBHS Seniors Celebrate Safely at Project Graduation 2026

After the Lemon Bay High School Commencement Ceremony, the celebration moved to the Englewood United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for the annual Project Graduation.

This year’s event, themed “One Last Rodeo,” was entirely free for all attending seniors, funded entirely by donations from local businesses, parents, and community members.

The all-night lock-in, which concluded at 5 a.m. Saturday featured a wide array of

entertainment, including laser tag, poker tournaments, line dancing lessons, mechanical bull riding, and a performance by dueling pianos. The graduates also enjoyed an assortment of trendy food and drinks, including custom s’mores, Boba lemonades, and “dirty sodas.”

Beyond the high-energy games, the event featured an emotional stop at “Memory Lane,” where students opened mailboxes filled with personal letters, cards, and well-wishes from family and friends. The night

concluded with a full breakfast and thousands of dollars in cash prize giveaways.

Organizers credited the community’s hands-on support for the night’s success, noting that local restaurants, volunteers, and donors worked around the clock to provide supplies.

Platinum sponsors included “Spread Spencer’s Sparkle” and Kirk Bouffard Plumbing. Thanks to local generosity, this massive event is completely free for all seniors, ensuring the majority of the class can attend together.

Woman-Led Shop Meets Local Need for Trusted, Automotive Repair Services

Family-owned and woman-led. That’s the foundation behind Xpertech Auto Repair, a shop that has been serving Englewood’s automotive repair needs for over two decades.

As the sole owner since 2009, Kathleen Callahan has made deep strides to offer Englewood something more than automotive repair: trust, care, and community. Committed to delivering honest, professional, and high-quality automotive repair and maintenance, Xpertech’s team of Automotive Service Excellence certified technicians do not fall short when advising on repair solutions.

“Our people, our clients, and our community are our top priorities. That’s why we use the latest diagnostic tools and repair technology to handle all major and minor repairs, foreign and domestic. We keep up on automotive trends, and we make sure to deliver the most up-to-date industry knowledge

to our customers,” Kathleen said.

That may come with a price tag, but Kathleen says Xpertech’s focus on honesty, relationships, and customer care is far more important than upselling unnecessary repairs. Amid a nationwide surge in automotive care costs driven by complex tech, parts tariffs, and labor shortages, honesty and transparency make all the difference.

“We don’t recommend things you don’t need. And we don’t sell work to people — we advise people,” Kathleen said. “We see more and more people continually driving older vehicles, and people need reliable repair shops to keep those cars on the road.”

FAMILY TIES

Family plays a big role in the shop’s dynamic.

Kathleen raised two daughters who are now using their own strengths to thrive in the family business.

“If you’d asked me three or four

years ago, ‘Will your daughters work for the shop?’ I would have emphatically said no, there’s no way, in a million years. But lo and behold, they are both here,” Kathleen said.

Delaney, the oldest, holds a Master of Business Administration with a focus on data analytics. As an operations and systems-oriented professional, she’s writing handbooks, tightening policies and logistics, and “taking care of all the moving parts behind the scenes,” Kathleen said.

Combining Kathleen’s industry knowledge with Delaney’s operational and design skills is leading to natural, synchronized advances in the shop’s operations. Paige, the youngest, joined Xpertech as a customer service representative. Recently, she started training to become a service advisor, learning more and more about customer relations.

Additionally, Paige and Delaney’s father, Dean Jarosik, plays a huge role in the operations. With over 37 years of experience, Dean has been with the shop since 2017 as a lead technician, soon to transition into general manager.

Working together as a family has been a positive experience, both for the shop and its customers.

CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY

Unique to Xpertech is its lively, carparts themed mural painted outside of the shop.

The colors were chosen to symbolize a proud partnership with the NAPA Auto Care program, which benefits customers through warranties.

“NAPA has a 36,000-mile nationwide warranty on parts and labor. Meaning, if a repair fails while a customer is traveling or in another state, another NAPA Auto Care Center can handle the repair

warranty,” Kathleen said. “It’s a win-win. Our shop maintains independence, but also is connected to a network of 18,000 other shops nationwide.”

To connect local customers with the shop, Xpertech mails a monthly newsletter that engages the community in a positive way.

The shop’s outreach efforts, including free hot dog days, giveaways, and food drives, simply exist to create joy and strengthen community ties. Readers learn about the staff, educational car care information, enter giveaways, and learn recipes.

“We want our customers to feel connected to the people behind the business,” Kathleen said.
