The Englewood Review - Jul 03, 2026

Page 1

Light Up Lemon Bay 2025 drew a big crowd on Fourth of July in Englewood. Fireworks burst over Buchan’s Landing, right at the end of Dearborn Street, lighting up the bay and the night sky. The Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary Club coordinated the celebration, turning Pioneer Plaza into a lively hub with live music and food trucks. Families gathered, friends laughed, and everyone’s eyes turned upward when the fireworks finally exploded. And hats off to John Fredricks, as his photo sums up the magic of the night. Read more about the story on page 8.

Welcome to Englewood REVIEW’s July 3, 2026 edition, marking a huge milestone: America’s 250th birthday. Hard to believe, right? Honestly, you don’t look a day over 249.

Inside, you’ll find our July 4th holiday calendar on pages 16 to 18, packed with events to keep the celebrations going. Last year, Light Up Lemon Bay turned Englewood into the heart of the party.

Fireworks exploded over Buchan’s Landing at the end of Dearborn Street, while the Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary Club transformed Pioneer Plaza into the place to be, with food trucks, live music, families sprawled on blankets, and friends laughing. When those fireworks hit the sky, every face turned upwards, lit by bursts of light and excitement. Look at the cover photo by John Fredricks; it captures the entire night in a single frame.

Don’t miss our feature, “Whatever Floats Your Goat,” on page 33. We sat down with Englewood’s Brian Faro to talk about his family’s favorite pets: the goats that have become local celebrities in their own right.

From everyone here at the Englewood REVIEW, we wish you a Happy 4th of July. Here’s to gratitude, good food, and the freedom we celebrate today and every day.

ENGLEWOOD EXAMINER

How Sarah Built a Legacy of Purpose and Wellness

Sarah was born in Hollywood, Florida, though she barely remembers it. Her family moved back to Worcester, Massachusetts, when she was just six weeks old.

Since 1987, Sarah has called Englewood home. Sarah is married to her husband, Derek, and they've raised four kids together. After years in education, Sarah shifted gears. Now, she pours her energy into wellness, entrepreneurship, faith, and being active in her community. She loves helping women improve their health, supporting local organizations, and serving at church. No matter what Sarah is doing, she wants to inspire others to live with more purpose, more joy, and more confidence.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I actually think that perfect happiness is unobtainable, and

we were never meant to be happy all the time. I prefer JOY which is constant even in the midst of the trials of life. You might not always be happy, but you can have unspeakable Joy when God and family are at the center of everything you do.

What is your greatest fear?

I believe that we ALL have a God-ordained purpose and gifts to use for the good of our family and community. One of my goals is for my ONLY fear to be a healthy fear of the Lord. However, if I am totally honest I am afraid of feeling disconnected from my purpose or failing to make the meaningful impact I have been called to make.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

The trait I most deplore about myself would be that I never feel like I do enough. I am critical of myself when it comes to work ethic. Even though I work very hard, I often focus on what I haven't done as opposed to celebrating the accomplishments. This inner drive also pushes me to grow, evolve and keep showing up. In a way, that tension is what fuels my persistence. It is a double edged sword, but I use it to carve a meaningful path

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

One thing I deplore in others is when they are fake, insincere or don't keep their word. I believe that contentment starts with being able to trust ourselves. Every time we show up and do what we say we will, we build that self-trust. But when we don't follow through, it

is like we are telling ourselvesand others-that we can't be relied on.

Which living person do you most admire?

The living person I most admire is my Dad. Though he was injured before I was born and has been a paraplegic for almost 50 years, he never let that define his limits. He has accomplished more than many fully ablebodied people and what stands out is that he never gives up. His perseverance and his ability to give his best in every situation have always inspired me. I just love my sweet ol' Dad!

What is your greatest extravagance?

Oh goodness, I am a bougie girl! I love high-end skin care, massages and spa days. My greatest extravagance, however, would have to be travel. I love cruising and exploring new places. There is something

about the experience of being out on the water, discovering different cultures and making memories. My husband, Derek, is the best travel buddy and we have a bucket list of places we will go.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

I think being busy is the most overrated virtue. Constant hustle often disguises a lack of alignment or rest. I believe life's richness comes when we're purposeful, not just perpetually occupied. Most people waste the best of their lives in “the grind,” oftentimes building someone else's dream. I think it should be the highest intention to discover:

1. What you love to do 2. What you are good at and 3. What serves others. The Japanese concept for this is “ikigai,” which translates roughly to life's worth or value or your reason

for being. That to me is so much more meaningful than just being busy all the time. Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

I have seen every episode of the tv show “New Girl” at least 10 times. So, you can often find me quoting this show even when I am not sure if the people I am with have seen a single episode. Another endearing quality of mine is that anytime someone says a song lyric, I am already singing the next lines. So, it is not as much about words or phrases that I overuse, I just sing a lot and quote tv shows and movies.

Every edition, Englewood REVIEW spotlights someone who stands out in the community. We ask each person to tackle The Proust Questionnaire; a classic set of questions created by Marcel Proust, the French writer.

America is celebrating its historic 250th birthday on July 4, 2026. While Independence Day is famous for backyard BBQs and fireworks, the real story behind the holiday is full of surprising twists, complicated history, and quirky traditions.

The history begins with the Continental Congress officially adopting the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Early celebrations were small and looked very different from what we see today. It took years for the holiday to develop into the nationwide, fireworks-filled spectacle we currently enjoy.

Check out these surprising Independence Day fun facts to share as the nation rings in its Semiquincentennial:

• The Real Date is July 2nd: Congress actually approved the resolution of independence on July 2, 1776, in a closed session. The 4th was simply the date the text of the Declaration of Independence was finalized.

• Fireworks Made an Early Debut: Cities wasted no time embracing pyrotechnics. Just one year later, in 1777, cities held official fireworks displays to mark the occasion.

• Millions of Hot Dogs: Americans eat over 150 million hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone. That is enough to stretch from Washington, D.C., to Los Angeles and back.

• The Liberty Bell Mystery: Despite being an enduring symbol of American freedom, there is no official record that the Liberty Bell actually rang on July 4, 1776.

Whether you are looking for trivia for a family cookout or want to dive into the roots of American patriotism, learning the complicated, fascinating history of the country’s founding is the perfect way to spend this monumental 250th year. For more fascinating trivia about Independence Day, check out page 19.

Back Pain That Steals More Than Just Comfort

For many people living with chronic lower back pain, sciatica, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, daily life becomes a negotiation with discomfort. Bending to tie a shoe, lifting a grocery bag, or standing in line can trigger pain that radiates down the legs or locks the body in tension. Sleep becomes disrupted, and mornings are often the hardest; waking with aching stiffness that makes even getting out of bed a struggle

Some experience a constant, dull ache; others describe sharp, shooting pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs In spinal stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal compresses nerves, often mimicking sciatica or neuropathy Over time, people stop doing the things they love; not by choice, but because of pain, fear of flare-ups, or loss of mobility While some are offered injections

The eerie and urgent work offers a clear-eyed exploration of modern convenience, illustrating how society willingly accepts technological shackles. Participants are responsible for obtaining their own copies of the featured book prior to the meeting. No registration is required for this free event. When pain disrupts even the simplest routines, the right treatment can change everything or surgery, many are told to simply manage their symptoms with medication When discomfort starts to steal the moments that matter most, it’s time to consider a new approach

An Integrative Alternative

At Sage Point Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in Venice, FL, founder Lauren Milligan and her team offer non-invasive, drug-free options for chronic back pain and spinal conditions

Every patient begins with a comprehensive assessment to determine whether they are a candidate for care This may include a physical exam and functional testing to evaluate nerve irritation, muscle tension, inflammation, and movement patterns

When appropriate, the clinic provides a personalized treatment plan designed to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support healing using a blend of acupuncture and advanced integrative therapies. “We focus on what’s driving the pain, not just where it hurts,” says Dr Milligan “And we tailor every care plan to the specific individual ”

Patient Case Study: Restoring Confidence

After Years of Pain

Carol, a 72-year-old Venice resident, came to the clinic after years of worsening lower back pain Her discomfort radiated down her legs and made it difficult to drive, walk, or perform daily tasks

Mornings were especially hard, she often woke feeling locked in her body

Her Neurologist had prescribed medication, but it offered little relief She had started to withdraw from family activities, including walking her grandchildren to school, and the annual family cruise A thorough initial assessment at Sage Point Acupuncture revealed inflammation, postural compensations, and signs of nerve compression

Based on her new patient consultation, Carol was found to be a good candidate for care A personalized treatment plan was created using acupuncture, integrative medicine treatment, and corrective movement guidance to reduce pain and restore function

Over the following weeks, Carol noticed improvements in flexibility, confidence, and pain reduction By the end of her treatment plan, she had resumed walking short distances and was picking up her grandkids from school and taking them to their activities again Routines that once felt out of reach

There’s Still Time to Reclaim Your Life

Many patients at Sage Point Acupuncture experience improvements, even after years of symptoms, when the right support is in place If you’ve been sidelined by back pain or spinal issues, don’t wait Your next chapter doesn’t have to be written in pain Call today to set up a consultation at (941) 451 - 8154

4th

of July Game Plan

Ensure a safe Fourth of July for pets by keeping them indoors, closing curtains, and using background noise to mask fireworks. To prevent injuries from sudden fear, it is wise to upgrade the microchips and get advice from a veterinarian on how to handle stress.

Create a Safe Space: Keep pets inside, curtains drawn, with comforting, familiar sounds to drown out

explosions.

Update IDs: Ensure collars, tags, and microchips have current contact information.

Manage Anxiety: Test calming aids like ThunderShirts early and consult a vet for medication if necessary.

Remove Hazards: Exercise pets earlier in the day and secure items like chocolate or fireworks away from animals.

Whatever Floats Your Goat: How One Local Englewood Family Started a Tribe

When most people picture a pet, they probably think of dogs, cats, maybe a hamster or a gerbil. But goats? Few folks put them on the list, which is surprising. Goats are hilarious, bright, and absolutely crave company.

But be sure to do your research, as goats demand a great deal of care. These little characters can live well past a decade, sometimes pushing 15 years or more. They need ongoing care: a friend to hang out with (they hate being alone), fences strong enough to keep them from staging a jailbreak, careful feeding, regular hoof trims, and medical checkups.

Brian Faro and his family right here in Englewood keep goats;

in fact, they have an entire herd. Englewood REVIEW sat down with Brian to learn more about their goat story.

By the way, people like to call a group of goats a “herd,” but you might also hear “trip” or “tribe” tossed around. “Trip” shows up mostly because goats, well, bounce and “trip” around. “Tribe” feels fitting too, given how tight-knit goats can be.

Englewood REVIEW: We have to admit it, Brian, we’re smitten with your goats.

Brian: Thanks!

Englewood REVIEW: How did this all start? How long have you had goats, and what made you take the plunge?

Brian: My wife and I, well,

Then, about six months back, we went to a livestock auction in Arcadia. We tried to bid on one but ended up leaving before it came up. Turns out, our friend stuck around, snagged the goat we wanted (well past midnight!), and even outbid someone just by slipping them five extra dollars. He brought the goat home for us. That’s how we added another. That one was an intact male, unlike our fixed guy. My wife wanted to breed the goats so friends could get some Nigerian Dwarves. One friend took two of the babies, but the family got so attached to the last little one, May, that we kept her.

Englewood REVIEW: That’s a fabulous story.

Brian: It’s long-winded, but that’s how we ended up where we are.

Englewood REVIEW: So you have acreage. Let’s talk through the realities of having goats. What do people need to know if they want goats? Are there zoning restrictions or anything like that?

Brian: Yes, that matters. To keep this kind of livestock, you need OUE zoning, Open Use Estate. That’s our setup. If you’re in a residential estate, you might have horses but not goats. Our land is classed as one house every five acres, so if you have less, you can’t build anyway. We’re in Englewood Farm Acres with five and a half acres, so we’re all set for animals. People in regular single-family subdivisions generally can’t have much more than a backyard chicken coop, no roosters, no livestock. On our land, we can keep just about anything: cows, pigs, you name it.

we’ve got the land for it. She’s always been up for an adventure, and she zeroed in on Nigerian Dwarf goats. They’re smaller than standard goats but not tiny. She started hunting around for some, and my dad, who’s her partner-in-crime, found one online and set things in motion. He gave my mom the cash and told her, “Go get Rachel and go buy this goat.” They checked out this goat, fell in love, and decided to buy her. But the seller said, “Actually, you’re taking all three.” My mom hesitated, but the price lined up with what my dad had provided. So they didn’t argue, they loaded up all three and came home. This was about two years ago.

Englewood REVIEW: But your heart is with the goats.

Brian: Absolutely. Goats do these wild sideways jumps that’ll crack you up. They’ll suddenly dart and kick their legs out for no reason—it’s pure comedy.

Englewood REVIEW: I bet your kids love this.

Brian: Oh, totally. The whole family loves them.

Englewood REVIEW: On the practical side, what do you feed them?

Brian: They get what’s called “sweet feed,” but only as a treat—morning and evening. When things get dry and the pasture’s not growing well, we supplement with hay. But the main thing is, they free-range. Out of our five and a half acres, about two and a half is pasture. The goats and our horse just graze all day, munching on grass and weeds.

Separating the moms and babies is a must, as mother goats can be a little aggressive with babies that aren’t their own. It’s funny, though, they’re

picky. If a weed’s growing, they mostly ignore it. If I pull it out and hand it to them, suddenly it’s their favorite snack, and they gobble it up like candy.

Englewood REVIEW: Presentation is everything, right?

Brian: For sure. They definitely want me to do all the hard work.

Englewood REVIEW: What else do goats need, besides food, shelter, and fencing?

Brian: A few things. We take care of their hooves. If you let them grow, they curl up and make it tough for the goats to walk. We use goat dewormer now and then, and we actually do their shots ourselves. At night, we bring everyone into the barn. Moms and babies are separated in stalls; guys stay together. Fencing is critical; our fences go up twelve feet to outsmart coyotes. Coyotes have gotten goats in our neighborhood before. Down the line, we might get a donkey for protection, as they’re known for being tough on predators. But

you have to watch temperament; we’ve had one that just didn’t fit with our crew, so we re-homed him.

Englewood REVIEW: What’s the hardest part of having goats?

Brian: They’ll eat just about anything. In the pasture, fine. But if they get into your yard, say goodbye to your plants. We’ve lost leaves off the mango tree; they’ll annihilate your garden beds. And they’ll climb everything: tractors, equipment, you name it. I’ve had them kill a tractor battery by fiddling with the key. You have to control how much sweet feed they get, too, or they’ll get chubby fast. They can bully each other for feed, so you always have to keep an eye out. And if you want to travel, that’s tough. Boarding goats isn’t really a thing, so you need reliable friends or neighbors willing to do animal swaps.

Englewood REVIEW: That community support really matters. Now, what’s the best part about goats?

Brian: They’re just plain fun. They’re friendly, they love attention, and it’s relaxing to just sit outside with them. They’re part of the family, honestly. Plus, they keep weeds

and grass in check.

Englewood REVIEW: Sweet little weed-eaters with personality.

Brian: Exactly.

Englewood REVIEW: Anything else you want to share with readers?

Brian: Not everyone can keep goats, and I didn’t expect we’d ever have a shot. It meant changing our priorities, letting go of things like a pool, and stretching our budget some, but it was worth it. Now, if I need to clear my head, I just go out with the goats, hop on the mower,

Tips for Raising Goats in Florida

Raising goats in Florida brings its own set of challenges, mainly the relentless heat, humidity, and constant battle with parasites. But with a few smart strategies, you can keep goats healthy and thriving here.

Start with the right breeds.

Kiko and Spanish goats handle parasites much better than most, which is a big help in Florida’s climate. Stick to strict rotational grazing; move your goats to new paddocks every couple of weeks, and don’t cram over five goats per acre. Breaking up the parasite lifecycle is crucial. Let your goats browse on brush and shrubs at eye-level, instead of forcing them to graze close to the ground where worms concentrate.

The Florida Heat

The heat in Florida’s not a joke, and goats do better in the cold than when they’re roasting. Make sure they have good

shelter; those simple, threesided sheds work if they’re dry, draft-free, and let the air circulate. A solid roof is a must to keep the summer downpours at bay. Shade matters. Water needs to be clean, cool, and always available. Sometimes a few fans in the shelter make all the difference during those brutal months.

Fencing

With fencing, goats will find a way out if you give them half a chance. Use high-tensile woven wire or 4-foot cattle panels; they’re strong enough. Skip the chicken wire; they’ll flatten it or jump on it and be off exploring before you know it. Also, install raised feeders. Goats don’t enjoy eating off the ground, and you’ll lose a lot of hay if you don’t keep it off the dirt.

Florida Soil

Florida’s soil isn’t rich in

every mineral goats need, so make sure loose, goat-specific minerals are always there for them, especially with enough copper and zinc. A small dish of baking soda helps settle their rumen and prevents bloating. Only give grain to growing kids or to those that are pregnant or nursing and really need the extra calories.

Goats are true herd animals. They get lonely on their own and do best in pairs or small groups. If you’re just getting started, buy at least two or three. For dairy, Nubians and Nigerian Dwarfs adapt well in Florida. If you’re raising goats for meat, go with Boer, Kiko, or Spanish breeds, as they do great on pasture.

Keep these basics in mind, and you’ll set your herd (or trip, or tribe) up for a healthy, happy life in Florida.

listen to a podcast, or just enjoy the quiet. It’s the most peaceful part of my day.

Englewood REVIEW: Sounds perfect. It’s so important to unplug and take that time for yourself, especially for someone like you who is always on the go.

Brian: Thanks, that means a lot. I’m always juggling tasks, but time outside with the goats resets everything. We’re lucky. If you can get land and you’re passionate about it, I say go for it. It gives the family so much

space and time together, and it’s never boring.

Englewood REVIEW: And goats will clear a lot of brush in a blink.

Brian: For sure. Just don’t let them get addicted to sweet feed, or they’ll ignore the pasture. We learned that lesson. Once we cut back, they got back to grazing.

Englewood REVIEW: Like little kids hooked on McDonald’s.

Brian: Exactly! They love their treats.
