Community members honor fallen veterans during Wreaths Across America Day at Englewood cemeteries. Junior ROTC cadets Chloe Reynolds, Paris Weil, and Lauren Preece lay a wreath in tribute to a fallen service member Saturday, Dec. 13, at Gulf Pines Memorial Park as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. A total of 1,561 wreaths were laid at Gulf Pines Memorial Park and Lemon Bay Cemetery to honor fallen veterans, thank those who serve, and teach children the cost of freedom. Observed nationwide each December, the tradition uses evergreen wreaths with red bows to symbolize eternal life and sacrifice, ensuring no veteran is forgotten.

Captain Derek Kemerer of the Englewood Fire Department has earned the prestigious international “Fire Officer” designation, becoming one of only 945 professionals worldwide to complete the rigorous credentialing process. The Commission on Professional Credentialing conferred the designation following a comprehensive peer review that evaluates experience, education, professional development, community involvement and technical competence. Englewood Fire Chief Kevin Easton praised Captain Kemerer’s dedication to excellence, noting that he is now the third EFD captain to achieve this honor. Maintaining the FO designation requires continued professional growth and active service within the community. Welcome back to Englewood. As the season returns, we’re happy to welcome back our seasonal residents and visitors—and to recognize the locals who call Englewood home yearround. There’s a familiar energy in town this time of year, and it’s always a pleasure to see the community come alive again. If you’ve been away, here are a few highlights you may have missed. Cedar Point Environmental Park introduced a new self-guided Storybook Walk, offering a peaceful and family-friendly way to enjoy the outdoors. Englewood also unveiled its own community-designed flag, now flying at the Chamber of Commerce as a new symbol of local pride. Charlotte County approved the next steps toward rebuilding Englewood Beach and Chadwick Park, an important milestone for one of our most treasured destinations. Local beaches experienced a strong sea turtle nesting season, and the new Mote Science Education Aquarium opened its doors in October, adding a wonderful new place to learn and explore along the coast. At The Englewood Review, we’ve been growing alongside the community. This year we launched a new website with daily local updates, introduced a new email newsletter, and expanded into local video. In early 2026, we’ll debut a weekly online news show—bringing Englewood stories to life in an even more engaging way. We’re especially grateful for the local businesses that support our community and local journalism. Selina Román: Abstract Corpulence From now through March 29, Sarasota Art Museum presents Selina Román: Abstract Corpulence, a new exhibition that reimagines the human form through abstraction and self-portraiture. Featuring bold, tightly cropped photographs of the artist’s own body, this series uses pastel bodysuits and tights to transform flesh into undulating, modernist landscapes. At once intimate and expansive, Román’s compositions challenge traditional notions of feminine beauty by shifting focus to line, color, and shape. The result is a gallery transformed into a space of quiet resistance— where softness, scale, and abstraction redefine the politics of body image. A 30-year metalsmith, Hammock creates handcrafted jewelry and clocks inspired by nature, pattern, and texture, using a mix of metals, gemstones, pearls, and shell, along with techniques such as roller printing, fold forming, enameling, and hydraulic press forming. Her background includes teaching at the Center for Creative Arts and the Delaware Art Museum, Master Artisan Certification with the Pennsylvania Craftsmen Guild, and service as Exhibits Coordinator at the Visual Art Center of Punta Gorda. Cedar Point Environmental Park Opens Story Book Walk Cedar Point Environmental Park has opened a new self-guided storybook walk dedicated to the Gopher Tortoise. Ribbon-cutting ceremony was highlighted by remarks from longtime volunteer and educator Greg Brezicki. He emphasized that habitat loss from urban development, agriculture, mining, and fires has endangered the species and fragmented its living spaces. Conservation efforts include protecting existing habitats, restoring damaged areas, and creating new safe sites. Relocation programs from high-risk areas have also shown progress. The new selfguided story trail aims to build an understanding of the tortoise and why protection is necessary. Give a Shelter Pet a Mini Vacation Life in the shelter is safe and loving, but nothing compares to new adventures, quiet time, and one-on-one companionship. Sarasota County’s Animal Services is inviting the community to take part in two short-term foster programs designed to give dogs a muchneeded break and help them shine for potential adopters. With Doggie Day Out, participants can treat a pup to a fun day of walks, beach time, naps, or even a special “pup stop” for a treat before returning them to the shelter. For those seeking a little more time, the Weekend Warrior program allows families to welcome a dog into their home for a short stay filled with snuggles, walks, and relaxation. Both programs provide valuable insight into each dog’s personality outside the shelter, helping staff make the perfect adoption match while giving participants the joy of making a difference. Annual Corgi Beach Bash Bring your favorite furry “loaf of bread” to the Annual Corgi Beach Bash on Saturday, February 21, from 2 to 7pm at Brohard Paw Park & Beach, 1850 Harbor Drive South, Venice. This dog-friendly, family-friendly beach celebration features corgi races, a costume contest, leash-free romping, and sunset views over the Gulf, making it the centerpiece of a funfilled weekend for corgi lovers. Organized by Tara Gess, the event is part of a larger itinerary that includes a Venice Farmers Market visit, downtown strolling, dining at dog-welcoming restaurants, and a Sunday morning corgi hike, but attendees are welcome to enjoy just the beach bash itself.
