Flip through this issue to find our regular content, plus a special Pioneer Days 2026 insert packed with your official event guide, a walk through the festival’s history, and stories honoring the roots that make Englewood home. These women remind us of what a caring community looks like, and why it matters to keep recognizing the people who shape our town. Playing into our 70s theme, take

ENGLEWOOD EXAMINER Englewood Celebrates 2025 Grand Marshal Nancy Wille as We Prepare for Pioneer Days 2026 As we gear up for Pioneer Days 2026, it’s the perfect moment to thank our 2025 Grand Marshal, Nancy Wille. Nancy’s connection to Englewood runs deep; five generations of her family have put down roots here. She remembers her own path: “I had a sewing shop on Dearborn Street. I ran it for 12 years until my hands gave out. So, I went back to school, took computer classes, got a job at the bank, and ended up as a computer programmer.” Nancy’s father, Bob Scott, brought his outboard motor business to Englewood in 1955 and was there at the very start of Pioneer Days. Since then, Nancy has always helped. “I’ve been involved ever since the first year: parade, Shark Weigh-In, Little Miss Contest, cardboard races, and just about every event you can think of during the Pioneer Days weekend. The parade? That’s the best part.” Being part of the Lemon Bay Historical Society, a group that grew right out of Pioneer Days, means a lot to her, too. “We’ve had a Historical Society float in the parade since the beginning,” Nancy says with pride. Sports have always been a big part of Nancy’s life. She’s played since she was a kid and kept it up through adulthood: adult softball, volleyball, even outboard boat racing. She’s put over 250,000 miles on her motorcycles. Along the way, she’s earned a stack of honors: the Mullet Award, the Englewood Legacy Award, and the 2025 Grand Marshal title. “I’m so honored by all these awards,” she says. Nancy shines as a spokesperson, too. She works with the
Lemon Bay Historical Society to present “Then and Now” historical videos about the local area, teaming up with Esther Horton to keep our Englewood stories alive. Nancy, thank you for being a remarkable Grand Marshal and for everything you do for Englewood. You make this community stronger every day. What is your most marked or distinctive characteristic? I enjoy being helpful. What do you most value in your friends? When they listen to you. Who are your heroes in real life? My dad was my hero. What are your favorite names? Just good ol’ Nancy. What is it that you most dislike? People that don’t follow the rules or take criticism. What is your greatest regret? Not going to school and to teach sewing but had a sewing shop. What is your motto? To help others before you help yourself. Every edition, Englewood REVIEW spotlights someone who stands out in the community. We ask each person to tackle The Proust Questionnaire; a classic set of questions created by Marcel Proust, the French writer.

Along with President Rockey, 11 other pastors from the area of Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte Counties took part. Pastor Richard, as he prefers to be called, hails originally from Minnesota. He comes to TLC from Trinity Lutheran Church of Fort Pierce and assumes the office of pastor following the retirement of Rev. Brian Albrecht in January. Pastor Albrecht served from 2018 until 2026. Rev. Earl Schmidt initially led the congregation, which they chartered in October 2015. In its short 10-year history, the church has grown to over 225 members. Driving past TLC on McCall Road (SR 776) you notice that the congregation is building a new and much larger church building, as it has outgrown the current facilities. Our hope and prayer is to occupy this new space in 2027. The congregation holds Sunday services at 9:30 a.m. from May through September. They hold Sunday services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. from October through April.

Celebrating the Pioneer Roots of the Lemon Bay Historical Society Esther remembered, “I think it was 1955 or 1956. I was in the first Pioneer Days parade. We had a Pram Sailing group—Mr. Hodely ran it, remember him? Over at Hodely Cottages on the beach.” Nancy chimed in, “We stayed there in ‘49.” Esther sighed, “Yes. The cottages were destroyed.”
The Lemon Bay Historical Society
Did you know that the Lemon Bay Historical Society started because of Pioneer Days? On September 4, 1983, the Pioneer Days Celebration paid tribute to Josephine Cortes, who wasn’t just Englewood’s first newspaper editor, but also wrote The History of Early Englewood and was the founder of Pioneer Days itself. By May 1984, people got together to form a society, and by the next Pioneer Days, on September 2,
1984, they had things up and running, hosting a mullet roast for 150 people. The fish came in fresh, thanks to the Platt family, and Bill Davis and Bob Cashatt went out and gathered swamp cabbage. They cooked it all up using Eula Davis’s famous recipe. In 1985, the Lemon Bay Historical Society became an official nonprofit. Their goal? To honor the pioneers and keep the past alive for the Lemon Bay

area. The Englewood REVIEW sat down recently with three Society members, Nancy Wille, Esther Horton, and Charlie Hicks, to learn more about their earliest days and what Pioneer Days means to them. There is something truly special about listening to the stories of old Englewood from the people who lived it firsthand.
It was a bittersweet moment, but Esther kept going. “He ran a sailing club for all the kids. He called the boats ‘Prams.’ I don’t know exactly who it was, but someone towed a ‘Pram’ in the parade, and the kids in the club ran alongside, barefoot, in our bathing suits, right down the street. I must’ve been 11 or 12.” Englewood REVIEW: “What year again?” “’57 or ’56. That first one— Pioneer Days. It’s changed over time,” Esther said. Nancy added, “My dad moved here in ’55 and helped with
Pioneer Days.” Englewood REVIEW: “What do you remember most about old Englewood?” Charlie answered right away. “There were so few people back then. From South Venice to Charlotte Harbor, you had this one place, just where Englewood Road meets 41: gas station, food market, fruit and veggie stand, everything in one. From Englewood to Placida, maybe 500 families total.” Englewood REVIEW: “That small?” Charlie nodded. “Nothing like now.” Esther remembered the roads. “They were just two lanes, not even marked—no stripes at all. The bridges? All wood and only two lanes wide.” Charlie added, “No Pine Street. Didn’t even exist. South Oxford, yeah, you could use that to get north or south. But the big thing was the Gulf Fishery in Placida.

Ernie’s Dockside Marine has been in business since 1981. My family and I moved to Englewood when I was 10 years old and have made Englewood home. My love of the water and boats started at a young age with my father, who was also in the marine business. Ernie’s Dockside Marine recently moved to 2860 Avenue of the Americas. I am excited about this move as it gives the business a larger boatyard and is still in the heart of the commercial area of Englewood that is close to the water.

Placida Road, after it rained, you had to be careful. Big trucks piled with fish and ice; they’d hit potholes so hard they’d bust up the road. I hit one once, spun out, and landed across the road.” For Esther, the strongest memory was community. “Growing up, everyone knew everyone. If someone stepped out of line, locals stepped in. Everywhere we went, I felt safe. My parents knew every other family. I never had to worry about anything bad happening.” Having groups like the Lemon Bay Historical Society is truly a gift to the Englewood community. Sitting with Esther, Nancy, and Charlie, you don’t just hear about the past; you feel it come
alive. They tell Englewood’s story as if you’re right there with them, seeing it all firsthand. The Society wants more people to join, to help keep these stories going and make sure they’re passed down. In the end, what matters isn’t just the facts; it’s the community, the connections we build, and the stories and love we pass along to the next generation. This is just one section of the complete and fascinating conversation. Visit the englewoodreview.com website to catch the full interview with the Lemon Bay Historical Society. Candidates for Mayor 4 a Day at the last debate on August 17.
‘Mayor 4 a Day’ is an Englewood tradition created to highlight local charities. Every dollar raised during these events goes directly to the candidate’s chosen organization. Throughout August, candidates and their teams host fundraisers,
participate in debates, and engage with the community to raise awareness for their causes. The candidate who raises the most money wins the title of Mayor 4 a Day and earns a special place in the Labor Day Pioneer Days parade.
This year’s five candidates, their charities, and their campaign messages are:

Emphasizing her commitment to the community, Macri shared, “To me, being Mayor for a Day isn’t about a title. It’s about service. It’s about

Superstars Competition Put Rotonda on the Map
Welcome to Beautiful Downtown Rotonda West
by Ken Kocab One of the most exciting events to ever take place in Rotonda was the 1973 Superstars Competition. This “sporting” event, broadcast nationally by ABC TV, not only attracted millions of viewers but also helped to popularize Rotonda as an ideal Florida resort community. During the fiveyear run of the show, interest in Rotonda increased greatly as viewers were given a snapshot of the “Florida Lifestyle.” The original idea for the Superstars came from Olympic skating star Dick Buttons. After winning the Sullivan Award as America’s top amateur athlete in 1948, Buttons felt he really wasn’t our country’s best athlete. Button formulated an idea at this time that there must be a way to find out just who is the best all-around athlete in America. Button didn’t act on his idea for another
25 years until he became an influential television analyst for figure skating. In 1973 Button founded his own production company and pitched his idea for a professional athletes’ decathlon. Unfortunately, all three networks turned down his idea. Things quickly changed as Buttons acquired Fram Filters as a half-sponsor for the show. ABC Sports, which had lost the broadcast rights for NBA games and was looking for a new sports program to fill its weekend sports slot, agreed to broadcast the show. All that was needed now was a place to host the event. ABC mounted an intense search for a place that featured ideal weather and facilities that would cover all ten sports in the competition. Joe Klein, the original developer of Rotonda, was delighted when he was informed Rotonda was selected as the host of the first Superstars Competition to be held in February 1973. Klein

was especially excited that Rotonda would be publicized week after week to millions of viewers on network TV. Don Ohlmeyer, an award-winning sports producer at ABC, was given the job of organizing the entire affair. The ten events would be taped on February 19, 20, and 21 and would be shown in a special two-hour presentation on February 25. Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson’s
Tonight Show sidekick and Rotonda spokesman for Joe Klein, was chosen as the official host for the Superstars. Before and during the competition, McMahon hosted many parties at his Rotonda home for TV, sports, and media types. Before the games began, construction began on living quarters for the athletes, and the building of the various venues for the ten events. Crews worked
day and night, as Klein put in $1 million towards construction costs. A condominium complex, an Olympic pool, and a PGArated golf course were quickly built. In Rotonda Shores, a 36acre park was built featuring a track and field oval, canals for rowing, a baseball diamond, and a portable bowling alley. Some of the top names in (Continued on page 14)

professional sports were invited to compete. Among those accepting invitations were: Johnny Bench, baseball; Joe Frazier, boxing; Bob Seagren, pole vaulting; and Johnny Unitas, football. Prize money for the contestants totaled $122,000. This was not all, however, as residual TV contracts, personal appearances, commercials, and endorsements all sweetened the pot. Joe Klein also presented each athlete with a Rotonda lot, worth about $8,500 at that time.
realized that he didn’t know how to swim. Audience reaction to the Superstars was so good that ABC returned to Rotonda in 1974 for another five weeks of shows. Table tennis, however, was eliminated as a sport, replaced with an obstacle course which became one of the most popular events in future contests. Superstars remained in Rotonda for five years, from 1973 to 1977. By 1975, women began to have their own Superstars competition, with volleyball star Mary Jo Peppler winning the first women’s contest.
Each competitor could pick seven of the ten events that they wanted to compete in. Athletes could not compete in their own sport, however. Jim McKay, ABC sports announcer, was chosen to be the commentator for the show, and Howard Cossell also made a guest appearance. After seven grueling events, pole vaulter Bob Seagren eventually won the first superstars’ competition, getting $39,700 for his efforts.
Klein had signed a ten-year contract with ABC to broadcast the Superstars from Rotonda. However, by 1977, ABC wanted to broaden the television coverage for the Superstars and decided to look elsewhere to stage the contest. After ABC left Rotonda, it continued to broadcast the show for another seven years. By 1984, however, ratings had dropped, and ABC cancelled the Superstars altogether.
An unforgettable moment happened in the 50-meter swimming event as competitors lined up to swim two laps of the pool. Joe Frazier did a massive belly flop into the water and barely made it to the other side of the pool. As it turned out, Frazier almost drowned and later
For a brief period of five years, Rotonda was the sports entertainment capital of the world. Even though the Superstars left in 1977, Rotonda had gotten the “jump start” it needed to expand as a resort community. It hasn’t stopped growing since.

Linda Stevens, Pioneer Days Grand Marshal 2026
The Englewood community has named Linda Stevens as the Grand Marshal for the 2026 Pioneer Days Parade, a moment that feels long overdue, given her decades of unwavering commitment to Englewood, local traditions, service, and charity. Linda’s name is practically synonymous with Englewood itself and has been a familiar and beloved part of Englewood for generations. In 1985, she opened Stevens the Florist, located
at 3455 S. Access Road, building the business into a longtime local staple while becoming deeply involved in the community she called home. Pioneer Days especially holds a special place in Linda’s heart. In 2002, she became Englewood’s “Mayor 4 a Day,” inspired by her vibrant “Flower Power” campaign that rallied the town and raised money for the Boys & Girls Club and the Englewood Animal Rescue Sanctuary. She didn’t

stop there. Linda continued to support both the tradition and the causes behind it, helping to drive fundraising in 2003 and 2019 and channeling thousands of dollars to local charities and youth programs. You can’t talk about the parade without mentioning Linda’s creative flair. In 2006, for the 50th Anniversary Jaycees Pioneer Days Parade, she and her team built a massive, themed float, one more way she poured her energy and spirit into one of Englewood’s most cherished days of the year. Her impact goes way beyond one event or one weekend a year. As an active Rotarian, Linda has played a major role in groups like Kids Needs, Suncoast Humane Society, and continues unflagging support for the Englewood Animal Rescue Sanctuary. She’s always there when the community needs her, helping with festivals, drives, and pretty much every annual celebration Englewood puts on. And, of course, she’s back year after year, helping
craft the mayoral sashes worn during the festivities and cheering on other Mayor 4 a Day candidates. “Linda Stevens represents everything that makes Pioneer Days so special,” says Englewood Chamber’s Kim Parks. “She’s given her time, her creativity, her energy, and her heart to this community— over and over again. From her Flower Power campaign to her joyful parade floats and all the countless charitable projects, she’s made Englewood more vibrant and more connected. We are absolutely thrilled to honor her as the 2026 Grand Marshal.” As Grand Marshal, you’ll spot Linda right up front, leading the 2026 Pioneer Days Parade, celebrating the history, spirit, and sense of togetherness that keep Pioneer Days central to Englewood year after year. Linda felt clearly moved when we spoke with her about the honor. “I am so happy, but honestly, I’m overwhelmed. Really, it’s just an honor.” How did she find out? Linda laughs, “Well, this morning I
got a message from Kim Parks at the Chamber. She just said, ‘Hey, if you get a minute, can you give me a call?’ I called, and she said, ‘Well, I wanted you to know, you’re going to be our Grand Marshal.’ I was just blown away. The thing is, I make all the sashes for the mayors and Grand Marshals, and I’d literally just finished making the Grand Marshal sash and dropped it off to Kim. I said, ‘Here’s the Grand Marshal sash,’ and she said, ‘Oh, thank you.’ I had no idea it was for me! I’ve been in tears, just completely overwhelmed and emotional all morning.” Thinking about what makes it all worthwhile, Linda says, “I just feel so lucky to be part of this community. It’s filled with the most giving, caring
people. It really is an honor.”

There’s more to Linda’s story than even the parade covers. “One thing I’m really proud of is that I’m the treasurer for FAME—Friends for the Advancement of Musical Education. A few friends and I started it, and so far, we’ve given nearly half a million dollars’ worth of musical instruments to local schools.”

Apply insect disease control (a good one is BioAdvanced) but there are many others. Follow the instructions, generally once a week for three weeks. You can also use rubbing alcohol on affected areas, horticultural oil, or spray with insecticidal soap. Early detection is the key.
