The Last Long Sunset…When Summer Quietly Slips
Away. Oscar Wilde once wrote, “...and all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” One day, the kids burst out of school and summer feels endless; suddenly we’re lost in vacation plans, packing bags, looking forward to lazy afternoons. Then, almost without warning, the days grow shorter. We’re chasing the last streaks of sunlight, already thinking about early mornings and school supplies. Check out our Back-To-School Tips on page 10. The school year might be underway, but these ideas always come in handy.

Let’s close with another line about summer, this one from Hal Borland: “Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night.” Somehow, that feels just right for Englewood. Summer winds down, but the good spirit sticks around.

LANDSCAPE SUPPLIES Englewood just got a little more neighborly with the grand opening of the Veteran Thrift Store. The ribbon-cutting landed on July 28th, and you could almost feel the buzz from the crowd that showed up to celebrate. The owners, Jessi and Brett, know a thing or two about service. They’re both veterans. Brett says, “With Veterans anything is possible.” Then adding, “Englewood strong!” Judging by the energy at the opening, plenty of locals agree. New customers wandered through the aisles, curious faces lighting up as they discovered Evans, “Heartwood” by Amity Gaige, “Kate and Frida” by Kim Fay, and “Unread” by Oliver James. Supported by the Library Foundation for Sarasota County for over two decades, the committee will select one title to feature, culminating in community discussions and visits from the author in March 2027. Fresh Starts and Full Checklists: Your Guide to Backto-School Sanity You know that jingle: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”? Well, we’re not talking about holidays. It’s back-toschool season. Kids get another shot at a fresh start, and parents get a brand-new checklist. Heading back to school feels like a mix of excitement, nerves, and a little chaos. Suddenly, you’re reminded just how many things you need to tackle before that first bell rings. Englewood REVIEW has your back. We’ve pulled together practical tips and real resources to help you and your family get ready for the year. Whether you’ve got a wide-eyed preschooler or a senior gearing up for that final lap, we’re here rooting for you. Let’s dive into some basics with tips to make those first weeks easier. Meal Planning Gone are those lazy lunches and random snacks thrown together
at noon. School lunches take a little more planning. Some families stick with buying, but packing can give you flexibility (and maybe a few more nutrients).
Start by bringing the whole family into the conversation. Challenge your kids to come up with new lunch suggestions. If you need a push, turn this into your family’s meal-planning season. Let everyone pitch in on breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If nothing else, you get fewer complaints when they’ve had a say. Get Your Home Ready A smooth school year really starts at home. Find a permanent spot for all the school papers, permission slips, and those early morning “remember this!” handouts. Get your child used to dropping their stuff in the right place the moment they walk through the door. These habits establish a positive foundation, so start them now and life gets a little less hectic.

Create a Study Zone Every student needs a space to work, even if it’s just a corner of the kitchen. If you can, set up a small desk or designate a table for homework. For older kids, a consistent, distractionfree spot makes focusing much easier. Can’t splurge on new furniture? Secondhand stores and neighborhood groups often have deals or freebies. Middle and high schoolers don’t need Pinterest-perfect spaces, just a place that’s all theirs. For those older students, the end of summer is the right moment to talk about your game plan for the year. Don’t stress about formal sit-downs. Talk while sharing ice cream or during a walk. Cover everything:
chores, grades, activities, time management, and let them tell you how you can be helpful, too. Teens respond better when you bring them into the process.
week is always tough. Kids don’t love alarms, but you’ll all adjust. For some kids, it just takes one tired day at school to get there.
“Success is no accident.” — Pele
Haircuts and Picture Day
Practice Makes Routine Things go smoother with a trial run. Yes, your kids will probably roll their eyes when you suggest a “dress rehearsal” for school mornings, but easing into a routine helps everyone avoid day-one drama. Start Your New Schedule Early Move bedtime back in small steps during the last week of summer. That means earlier nights and mornings. The first
You know the drill: schedule haircuts about a week before school starts. That gives everyone time to get used to new styles. Picture day always sneaks up fast. Go Over School Safety Now’s the moment to go over transportation routines, pickup details, bus rules, and all those procedures with your child. Go through everything calmly. Let your child ask questions. Familiarity brings reassurance.

Meet the Teacher When your school hosts an open house, be sure to attend (if you haven’t already). It’s a simple way to connect with new teachers and help kids feel comfortable in their classroom before the first day. If you missed the open house, then drive by the school and, if possible, walk around to get acclimated to the terrain. Morning Checklist Every organized parent leans on a checklist, so don’t skip this step. Put a visible list on the fridge for backpacks, shoes, lunch, water bottles, and all the other things kids forget. Teach them to check tasks off as they go. It’s a skill that pays off later, and a great time to get your child familiar with an alarm clock. What to Wear? Let your child pick their first day-of-school outfit ahead of time. Nothing ends a morning
faster than a favorite shirt that’s suddenly missing or too small.
The First Day Has Arrived First Day Jitters It’s totally normal for everyone to feel nervous. Instead of dwelling on worries, shift the focus, reconnect with friends, find out who’s in your class, and remember that everyone feels the same jitters. For younger students who feel anxious, play “school” with them, read books about starting school, or draw matching hearts on your hands to give them a sense of comfort during the day. Keep the Connection School matters, but it shouldn’t be the only topic you talk about with your child. Ask about their friends, interests, music, and little daily moments, not just homework or grades. If you only quiz them about school, they’ll avoid genuine conversations.
Show them you care about the whole person, not just their report card. Extra Tips for Success — Slip a handwritten “love note” into your child’s lunchbox or bookbag. — Florida classrooms can be chilly, so send a light jacket just in case.

— Label everything your child owns.
When all you need is a simple cremation, we are here to help. We keep our costs down so that we can pass on the savings to our families.
— Keep healthy snacks on hand for after school. — Bedtime stories aren’t just for little kids; they’re a great way to wind down, share some warmth, and snag some cuddle time. — Don’t miss those first dayof-school photos. Kindergarten through senior year? You only get 13 chances. Make them count. Here’s to a great school year for you and your kids: routine, surprise, nerves, and all.

Other times it shows up among the ancient stones near the Colosseum, or pops up somewhere in Europe, or even grabs a moment in the bright lights of Carnegie Hall.

From Woodstock to Oktoberfest: Englewood’s The Artist Colony Celebrates 5 Years of Music and Meaning
Woodstock 2025 concert with Dan Klein, Sydney Martin and Dale Shumate
The Artist Colony in Englewood is gearing up for the 2026-27 season. This marks five years since they started, and their second year as a recognized 501c3 nonprofit. They’ve been busy building new events for the Englewood community, really making their mark. Last season felt like a whirlwind. In spring 2025, they hosted a Beatles Tribute, raising money to buy a sousaphone for the marching band. Their second Woodstock event sent admission donations straight to St. David’s Jubilee and, again, toward that sousaphone. Charlie Foxtrot Brewing Co. jumped on board as a partner and became the heart of the new food court, with part of their sales covering festival expenses. For 2026-27, they’re planning six concerts split between winter and spring, all at Pioneer Plaza. The winter series kicks off with Oktoberfest on the 25th. Expect a mix of
entertainment, a new “kids’ korner” filled with lawn games, and a food court offering German eats, capped off with a concert. On November 22nd, they’re honoring veterans, servicemen, and their families with a Wizard of Oz theme: “There’s no place like Home.” They invite musicians who are vets or want to pay tribute to someone who served at the Open Mic: share a name, branch of service, introduce yourself or someone special. ROTC and veterans can join the cornhole tournament, and vet organizations may set up booths to showcase their services or sell merchandise. Bands like Rising Tide and Old Glory, with veteran musicians, will close out the event. December 6th brings the Holiday Showcase. Local musicians deliver holiday tunes to get everyone in the spirit. The food court and kids’ korner return, along with another concert. Artists are welcome to display and sell their original work at every event.

Sydney Martin, the founder of The Artist Colony, shares her story: “I was self-employed forever, organized and managed well. When I moved to Englewood, I started making concrete garden sculptures. Tried two-day art shows for two seasons. Honestly, I would’ve saved money staying home. So I thought, why not start a local art group? A colony for artists to show and sell their original art: low costs, no travel, easy setup. We’re now in our fifth season for the Outdoor Gallery, twice a month in Pioneer Plaza. And it got bigger than I ever thought. We’re a 501c3 now and rolling out six Family Festivals and Benefit Concerts. We’ve partnered with the Englewood YMCA and created ‘The Artist Palette,’ offering classes for adults and kids at the YMCA. Supporting the arts and performing arts is what we do. And have I actually sold my garden art? Not yet, but I will, once the Artist Colony is truly established.” She’s especially thrilled with their YMCA partnership. “Liz is the director. I asked if there was a room available for art classes. She gave us space, and we talked about how to use it. Now our artists can work there up to five days a week, evenings and weekends included. They can use it as a studio, set up areas to sell their work when teaching, and during monthly family events at the Y, we host mini art markets, putting a spotlight on our artists and their classes.”

As the Colony grows, Sydney’s bringing veterans into the fold. “I want them on the team. I have musicians, a group of artists, and now veterans.” She’s also looking for benefactors and supporters to help cover the costs for the sculptures that decorate Dearborn Street, a unique project they brought to Englewood. Sydney adds, “We’re expanding our concert series: kids’ korner, artists during the day, aiming for true family festivals. There aren’t a lot of family events around here, and we want to change that.” Admission is food or cash donations for causes listed in promotions and at the gates. This season, they’re still raising funds for sousaphones. They need another $25,000 to

The $10,000 Sssuccess Story: New Champion Crowned in Florida Python Challenge environment. But Rahill wasn’t the only one leaving with a prize. FWC handed out nine other awards in professional, novice, and military categories, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500. One python hunter walked away $10,000 richer on Wednesday after the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) unveiled the winners of the 2026 Florida Python Challenge. This annual event isn’t just a contest; it’s a hands-on conservation push, all about spotlighting the threat of the invasive Burmese python and protecting the Everglades’ ecosystem. The competition kicked off back in 2013 as a month-long contest, had a brief return in 2016, and since 2020, it’s been an annual 10-day tradition. For 2026, the event ran from July 10 to July 19. This year drew a crowd: 907
python hunters from across 30 states, Canada, and Vietnam, all chasing pythons through the Florida wilds. Together, they captured 280 Burmese pythons. That’s not just a number, as each one helps tip the scale back toward balance in the Everglades. Tom Rahill stood out, nabbing 96 snakes on his own. That haul earned him the $10,000 grand prize, outpacing last year’s winner, Taylor Stanberry, who wrangled 60 pythons and made history as the first woman to take home the top spot. During the challenge, Rahill helped a veteran take down a massive 17-foot snake, another win for teamwork and the
victory” for Florida wildlife, the result of strong partnerships and engaged citizens. Since the Florida Python Challenge launched, hunters have removed over 1,600 pythons; FWC and the South Florida Water Management District contractors have taken out over 19,000 since
2017. These relentless efforts are shrinking the Burmese python threat, one snake at a time. The Florida Python Challenge shows what’s possible when people care enough to get dirty, get involved, and fight for the future of the Everglades, python by python.

Spring into Action: Crystal River, Homosassa, Springs Florida isn’t just beaches and roller coasters; the state hides over a thousand springs, bubbling up from the earth and brimming with life. These springs rank among the world’s natural wonders. Lush plants, curious animals, and clear water make them perfect for anyone hungry for adventure, diving, or just a new story. Slip into the water, snorkel, dive, or just float around, and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with turtles, fish, the occasional otter, or maybe a slow-moving manatee. Adventure comes in many forms here: sleep under the stars, paddle a canoe, drift along in a tube, or try kayaking. At Silver Springs and Wakulla Springs, hop on those iconic glass-bottom boats
and watch the underwater world unfold right below you. Head to Rainbow Springs near Dunnellon, where people rave about its beauty, and for good reason. If you’re chasing Southern charm and a real taste of history, Homosassa and Crystal River won’t let you down. Whether you’re here
for manatees or just to relax, you’ve got options—golf, boat rentals, kayaking trips, fishing, scalloping (when the season’s right), a spa, a lagoon-style pool, hot tub, a game room for the kids, outdoor lawn games, and great food in their on-site restaurant. Grab a snack at the Tiki Bar or Pro Shop if you’re in the mood for something lighter. 9301 W Fort Island Trail, Crystal River, FL 34429 352-795-4211 plantationoncrystalriver.com Where to Play Weeki Wachee Springs State Park Weeki Wachee feels like you’ve stepped into a daydream, Old Florida, somehow still here. Englewood 14-Year-Old Nets Blazing 47-Second Hat Trick to Court World Record
Englewood’s Rowan Boyer
The Literacy Center for Dyslexia, Inc. Englewood 14-year-old nets 47-second hat trick to set world record.
Rowan Boyer, a 14-year-old from Englewood, pulled off something remarkable: he scored three goals in just 47 seconds during a soccer match. That flurry of goals, known as a hat trick, wasn’t just exciting for his team, the U14 Englewood Chaos. It’s now in the running for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest hat trick in youth competitive soccer and ranks as the fourth fastest ever recorded. The funny thing is, Rowan didn’t even realize at first that he’d set a record. A few weeks
went by before he realized the accomplishment. He’s scored plenty over the years, but nothing quite like this.
time. Rowan says he never thought about breaking a record. “My mindset was just towards the game,” he said.
“It was right after halftime. My coach told us to go for it,” Rowan explained on WINK, a local news station. After the kickoff, his team swarmed forward, pushed the ball to the left wing, crossed it in, and Rowan was there to finish it off.
The actual surprise came later: watching the game film with his dad. “I was watching and asked, Dad, why is this so fast?” Rowan remembered. “I was kind of shocked. I said, Dad, can we get submitted? This is actually crazy.”
Then they reset, and he did it again. And again. From kickoff to the third goal, including the celebrations and lineups, just 104 seconds ticked by in real
He sent the footage to Guinness about two months ago. Now he’s just waiting to see his name go down in history.

Nine-Pound Yorkie Survives Serious Alligator Attack After Englewood Family Rushes to Save Her Life Laura Dujmovich, who calls Englewood home, never imagined she’d be rushing her tiny Yorkie, Zoey, to save her life after an alligator attack.
Little Zoey, at just nine pounds, ended up with four broken ribs and both her lungs collapsed, a nightmare scenario for any pet owner. She pulled through those first critical hours at the vet, but healing is not just about stitches and medicine. Zoey isn’t just a dog; she’s family. She’s been the steady thread holding this household together. Laura says, “That’s my sister. She’s my best friend.” And for Alice Trowbridge, who adopted Zoey during the bleak isolation of COVID. “She saved my life, really.” There’s more here than companionship;

Zoey is comfort, she’s laughter, and she’s love in a nine-pound package. The attack changed everything in an instant. They were only
outside for a minute, enough time for disaster to strike. A sudden, gut-wrenching cry shattered the quiet, and Laura and her daughter bolted toward the sound, screaming Zoey’s

name. They found her bloody, barely clinging to life on the seawall. The alligator had already slipped back into the canal. At the ER, the outlook was grim: a 50/50 chance of survival. Alice and Laura both thought they had lost their precious dog. But Zoey is a fighter. She hung on. After days of treatment and worry, Laura and Alice finally brought her home. Laura says, “She’s a little traumatized. We’re just taking it a day at a time.” Taking care of her is full-time work. Keeping Zoey hydrated with ice chips, applying ice packs, heat compresses, and staying up in shifts to make sure she’s okay; Laura and her mother have their hands full. “It’s 24/7,” Laura says, “but we kind of knew what we were signing up for.” Through the exhaustion, there’s love and even flashes of playfulness from Zoey. The vet bill: $15,000 and counting. Laura started a GoFundMe, hoping for a little help as they walk this long road, one tense day at a time. “We’re not doing it for the spotlight.” They will donate any extra funds raised beyond their needs to the hospital that saved Zoey or to another family experiencing a similar crisis. “We’re not going to keep it. We’re going to donate it back.” Zoey has more spunk in her
than a prizefighter. When Laura found her after the attack, Zoey practically tried to lunge back for the gator. “She had a lot of fight left in her!” Laura says. That’s just the kind of dog she is: stubborn, fierce, loyal, and so full of heart. It’s been a rough stretch, for sure. Florida’s seen a spike in alligator attacks lately: a swimmer killed, a snorkeler bitten, and now Zoey in Englewood. The family’s message to others: don’t let your guard down. Laura says, “You can never be too careful.” They were right there, watching, but it still happened “in literally four minutes.” Things move fast. “I could sit here and think of what I could’ve done differently… I don’t know if it would’ve helped.” You can’t be too careful around Florida’s wild side. Zoey’s fighting spirit is a reminder: love is stubborn, and with enough care, even the smallest dog can pull off a miraculous comeback. If you encounter an alligator, call the FWC Nuisance Alligator Hotline at (866) 392-4286 or 911. It is best to call FWC in a non-emergency and 911 when there is active danger and an immediate threat. To go to Zoey’s GoFundMe page, go to “Help Zoey Recover After Alligator Attack.”

Spinnaker Cafe Celebrates 20 Years in Business Familiar faces behind the counter at Spinnaker Cafe have welcomed generations of families, who both live in and frequent Englewood, with fresh coffee, homemade meals and personal connections.
As of January, Spinnaker Cafe, under the ownership of Lisa Domuczicz, has achieved a milestone: 20 years in business. Two decades ago, Lisa wouldn’t have dreamed of reaching this milestone. In fact, her initial plan was to buy the business, make improvements, and sell after five years. But the business became a huge part of Lisa’s life, made possible by the love and support of her parents. Relationships, consistency, and longevity have played equal parts in making time fly. “One of the greatest gifts has been watching generations of families return to the cafe and make memories. Babies we once knew are now in high school, and so forth. Those relationships for directions and information. homemade breakfast and lunch in a relaxed setting.
Now celebrating two decades of success, Lisa is looking forward to more of everything: more families huddled around the restaurant’s tables, more laughter among diners and wait staff, and more of the consistency and longevity Spinnaker knows.
Like many restaurants facing similar challenges, Lisa said, Spinnaker Cafe’s biggest challenge in the last two decades has been the rising cost of doing business.
Part of that consistency is the excellent staff and the care they extend to customers. “It takes time to build a team that feels like family,” she said. “When people walk through our doors, they recognize the same faces year after year, and I think that consistency matters. We’re fortunate to have employees who care about each other and about the customers they serve.” Many Spinnaker employees have spent years working together and under the chef, who has been part of the team for 20 years. The long-term staff has allowed the cafe to focus on what it does best: serving questions, email Bill at mazz102@ yahoo.com. Open Mic Night: Culture Coffee, 405 W. “I never imagined we’d be paying what we pay today for bacon and eggs,” she said. “Inflation and labor costs have changed everything, not just for restaurants but for everyone.” Even so, Lisa remains grateful for the Englewood community and its continued support through economic conditions and different seasons. “We have incredibly loyal customers,” she said. “Some visit every day, others every week, and some even stop in more than once a day. Seeing that kind of loyalty after all these years means everything to us.”
