Englewood Review: Celebrating Earth Day and Its Florida Beginnings

Welcome to the April 10, 2026, edition of the Englewood REVIEW.

Earth Day’s coming up on April 22. Be sure to look at our Nature Calls section, where you’ll find details about special Earth Day celebrations happening nearby.

A bit of history: Earth Day started back in 1970, and Floridians jumped right in. Pollution was wreaking havoc in our state; pesticides were hurting eagles, fish kills were everywhere, and people couldn’t ignore it anymore. Inspired by Senator Gaylord Nelson, the University of Florida’s Environmental Action Group set up a campus organization in 1969. That action started local efforts and began a movement across the state.

Floridians feel a strong connection to nature. It’s part of who we are.

Here’s something interesting: Florida is closely connected to Earth Day’s beginnings and boasts the world’s highest concentration of freshwater springs, numbering over 600. The Keys are another gem; they formed from ancient coral reefs, and their ecosystems are truly one-of-a-kind. In 1970, Florida Technological University students held a mock trial for pollution, putting environmental concerns in the spotlight from the very start.

Florida Earth Day & Environmental Facts - Springs: With over 600 freshwater springs, including 33 first-magnitude springs,

Florida’s natural waters play a huge role in keeping water clean throughout the country.

- Coral Roots: The famous beaches in the Keys sit atop fossilized coral, leftovers from long-ago higher sea levels.

- Seagrass Beds: These underwater meadows in the Keys matter for wildlife. State park biologists use rocks to fix propeller scars and add perches so birds can fertilize the areas naturally.

- Sunscreen Origins: The first sunblock came out of Miami Beach in 1944. Benjamin Green, a pharmacist, created “Red Vet Pet,” a red gel that kicked off a new era in beach culture.

- Biodiversity: Greater Miami stands out, as it’s the only U.S. metropolitan area bordering two national parks: Everglades and Biscayne.

Florida Historical & EcoTrivia

- Student Activism: On the first Earth Day, students at Florida Technological University staged a mock pollution trial.

- Protecting Wildlife: FloridaFriendly Landscaping™ encourages folks to cut down on fertilizer and water use, which

helps local plants and animals and keeps groundwater safe.

- Coastal Cleanup: Ocean Conservancy has hauled away over 350 million pounds of plastic since 1986. Floridians are actively involved in cleaning up our coastlines. There’s so much to celebrate, and even more to protect. Earth Day isn’t just a date; it’s a reminder of Florida’s rich, fragile environment and the role we all play in caring for it.

Every Painting Tells a Story: Robert Casler’s Story Is a Masterpiece

There’s a famous saying, “Every painting tells a story.” But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find an even bigger story behind every artist. That’s definitely true for Robert Casler, the heart and hands behind Renovaré Art in Englewood.

Robert wears a lot of hats: artist, muralist, creative, and business owner, but his journey is anything but ordinary. He says, “I named my business ‘Renovaré’ because it means ‘renew’ or ‘restore’ in Latin. Evett and I had just moved to Englewood and were starting over, giving our lives a fresh start. That’s the power I think art has. It can refresh your spirit, and that’s what I do for my clients.”

Robert and Evett are really living the dream. In Englewood, Robert never runs out of projects or inspiration; it’s everywhere he looks.

“It’s hard to describe the urge to create,” Robert says. “This urge is just a part of

you, like the need to connect with people. It’s the way you share your views and your life experiences. Honestly, it makes you vulnerable to put your art out there. But if you can bring someone joy, it’s worth it.”

How did it all start? That’s a story in itself.

Evett Vidot Casler grew up in upstate New York, then moved to Orlando in the ’80s to work at Disney resorts. “My very first day in Florida was also my first day working at Disney,” she laughs.

Robert came from Michigan, always dreaming of sun-soaked Florida. He is well-traveled: St. Pete, sailing up to Delaware for a year, then settling in Fort Lauderdale. That’s where he got deep into antique and furniture restoration. Turns out Robert has a knack for color and an eye for detail. Insurance companies hired him to restore flood-damaged furniture. He could carve a missing table leg, gold-leaf a frame, or match

stone walls, clouds, and cherubs. The room looked like a little Italian church.”

Robert’s work graces the Orange County Courthouse, Rollins College, and the homes of Central Florida’s affluent: think the two-story libraries and in-home movie studio crowd.

finishes so flawlessly that even the pickiest clients went home happy.

Robert eventually settled down and set up his own shop in Orlando, first as a partner, then solo. High-end cabinetry, custom millwork for luxury homes, libraries two stories tall; he finished it all.

The mural work came later, kind of by accident. One client found out he was an artist and asked him to paint a mural. He did, and then the commissions just kept coming, from murals, faux finishes, gorgeous textures, everything. “It really took off in the late ’90s,” Robert remembers.

Each mural tells a story, personalized for whoever’s hiring him. “I always try to find out what people care about,” Robert says. “One guy wanted his very own Catholic chapel at home: stone walls, benches, the whole vibe. Actual stone would’ve weighed too much, so I painted it. I created bevel-cut

But the best thing Orlando gave him was meeting Evett. Both busy with their own lives, they finally tied the knot on a boat, of course, and threw their wedding reception out on Cabbage Key.

while, Evett commuted between Englewood and Orlando (then Sarasota), while Robert lived on their boat. “Being self-employed makes getting a mortgage tricky,” Robert says, shaking his head. So, he just lived on the boat for three months while everything fell into place. Now, they call their place “The Osprey House.” It’s exactly what you’d imagine from two creatives: murals everywhere, the house lovingly restored after Hurricane Ian. Out back sits Robert’s two-story with a loft art studio. There’s also a hot tub, a sailboat-inspired bar, and

a beach-style lounge area that makes you want to stay forever, sipping mojitos or margaritas. Robert’s in his element in Englewood. He’s always busy, from working on his plein air paintings around town or on his “Florida Byways” series, capturing scenes from all across the state.

Chances are you’ve seen his work at Pioneer Plaza. That mural on the fence after Hurricane Ian? That’s his. He painted it on the remnants of their shed and fence to raise money for locals. People still come by to sign it. “Together We Shall Overcome.” The colorful mural is part art, part community gathering place. Robert hates wasting anything. He builds murals from reclaimed wood, using scraps and leftover materials. “I upcycle stuff all the time—job materials, roof scraps, you name it.”

And Robert is not just about the visual arts. He plays guitar and writes his own songs, too. His studio has equipment for music recording. “He’s so good at so many things, it’s hard to keep up,” Evett laughs. “People call him for repeat work and say, ‘We only trust Robert!’”

Earlier this year, Robert finished a mural honoring Virginia B. Andes in Punta Gorda. “One of my clients is a board member at their foundation,” Robert explains. “Virginia was a trailblazer. She worked at IBM during WWII, traveled the country as an engineer, and always thought of herself as an educator. After she retired, she volunteered for decades, helping others, leaving an incredible legacy.”

Always digging deep to tell the story, Robert researched Virginia’s life and work, talking with people who knew her, trying to figure out how to capture her spirit. He decided to paint Virginia teaching, inviting viewers to become part of the scene, and added touches from different stages of her life. The mural feels big and personal at the same time, a real celebration of her impact.

Robert sums it up like this: “Visual art is an ancient form of storytelling.” His mural honors Virginia’s life of service, showing her both as a young professional and as a dedicated volunteer welcoming the next generation.

Even though Robert’s always busy with new projects, he welcomes visitors to his studio. Be prepared, because you’ll

probably leave in awe at the sheer range of his work.

Every piece of art has a story, and every artist has a life behind it. Robert Casler’s story is one worth hearing.

A local Doctor provides truly compassionate care and proven solutions for chronic pain and complicated conditions

Being that migraine is one of those complicated conditions not fully understood, Dr Milligan's options were prescription medications that often did not work and to make lifestyle changes to limit triggers that often cause migraine "It was no way to live," she shares "I was young and should've been living a bright, vibrant life Instead I was monitoring my daily caffeine intake, avoiding long exposure to fluorescent lights and doing my best to prepare for changing weather conditions.

As you can imagine, most of the year was rough We lived in Florida, it was sunny in the morning and raining by the afternoon!" It wasn't until she found her acupuncturist that she found real relief

"This is why I often refer to my practice as 'The Last Resort With The Best Results ' You ve been everywhere else and been given the same disheartening prognosis, prescribed the same medications and told 'this is just something you re going to have to learn to live with "

Soon after her incredible experience with the healing arts, she made the life changing decision to alter her medical career and pursue acupuncture,

Calling All Englewood Kids: You’re Invited to Dive Beneath the Waves for Earth Day Art Contest

Come celebrate Earth Day with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on April 22, 2026.

Earth Day’s not just a day; it’s a reminder to appreciate the planet and a chance to think about what more we can do for Florida’s air, water, and land. DEP keeps working all

year to protect these resources, but Earth Day stands out as an actual moment to learn about Florida’s unique environment and see how science and stewardship shape our state’s future.

This year, DEP invites students all across Florida to take a closer look at what’s hidden

beneath the waves with the 2026 Earth Day Poster Contest.

Earth Day Poster Contest: “See the Seafloor: Discover Florida Beneath the Waves.”

Did You Know?

Florida’s mapping its seafloor at a scale nobody’s tried before.

The Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative is making the most complete maps of Florida’s coastal waters ever.

Scientists recently discovered new deepwater coral reefs way offshore in Northwest Florida, beyond the famous Atlantic coast coral reefs.

The seafloor’s got clues to Florida’s ancient past. Mapping reveals old shorelines and buried river channels from thousands of years ago.

Florida waters are home to over 1,000 known shipwrecks, including some dating back to Spanish explorers hundreds of years ago.

The theme shines a spotlight on the Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative: a huge statewide project that’s mapping and exploring the underwater world along Florida’s coast. Scientists use tools like sonar and LiDAR to build detailed maps of the ocean floor just offshore. These maps reveal underwater habitats, marine life, and all kinds of natural features that define Florida’s coast.

There’s been some exciting discoveries already: ancient river channels, offshore sand resources, and even deepwater coral reefs people didn’t know existed. By learning what lies beneath the waves, scientists help protect Florida’s environment, restore beaches, protect marine habitats, and strengthen our coastline. What else could scientists find as they map Florida’s seafloor? That’s where

Florida’s kids come in.

Enter Now: Create artwork showing secret landscapes, fascinating marine life, or underwater discoveries lurking beneath Florida’s waves.

If you’re a student in grades 4-12, you can submit original drawings, paintings, or digital artwork. Any medium’s welcome, as long as it highlights the Florida Seafloor Mapping Initiative. DEP will pick winners from each age group (grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12) in each of its six district regions. District winners will score an Aquatic Preserves reusable water bottle and move on to the statewide competition. The grand prize winner statewide gets a full-size printed poster of their work. The contest kicks off April 1, and all entries must be in by Earth Day, April 22, 2026.

Champions Crowned in Englewood Senior Softball 2026 Winter Season

The Englewood Men’s Senior Softball League wrapped up the 2026 winter season in late March with two teams repeating as division champions.

Englewood Moose Lodge No. 1933 won the Gold division for the second straight year and third time in four years with a 17 & 4 record. The team had 30 home runs to lead the league. “We had a large number of games missed by key players, but there is just no quit in this team,” said Mark Geary, manager of the Moose.

“Repeating in the Gold division is very hard to do. But we have a solid, experienced team.”

Xpertech Auto Repair took the crown in the Silver division with a 14 & 7 record, which wasn’t decided until the final game of the season. “It was a tight race for first all year”, said Rick Silva, manager of Xpertech.

“Several teams jockeyed in and out of first place all year long. It was a very competitive division this year.”

In the Bronze division, the Relics also repeated as division champions with a 17 & 4 record.

“We had a very good year, with consistent play and good hitting every week,” said Greg Brezicki, Relics manager. “All Bronze division guys still love to play

the game and have a great time playing.”

In postseason tournament play, the Placida Road Pub Pirates won the Gold division tournament, while Rotonda V won the Silver division tournament.

“The league had a great season all around,” said commissioner Scott Maresh. “And home run power in Gold, very impressive.” There were 106 home runs hit in the regular season, with Todd Widrick leading the division with 16 home runs. Tom Atkins, Gordy Powers and Brian Donehue were close behind with 13 each.

Single-game records were set: 9 in a Moose–Placida Roadhouse Pirates game and a record 16 for one day. “Favorable winds, but mostly some really, really good players,” commented Maresh. The league is open to all men 60 years of age and older, and each team plays 21 or more games from early January through March. “We also have a Spring and Fall season, and occasionally a Summer season as well,” said Maresh. For more information about the league and how to register to join, visit the League’s website atwww. englewoodseniorsoftball.weebly. com.

Three Freshwater Favorites

In our last article, we focused on three of our favorite saltwater launches in the Englewood area. We hope local kayak anglers have checked out at least one of these spots and enjoyed a glorious trip. Now we’re looking inland to suggest some freshwater launches we enjoy. Freshwater launches are often our choice because tidal

flows and winter winds don’t affect the creeks and lakes we fish. In small lakes, the wind that makes fishing on Lemon Bay problematic isn’t an issue. Spring is the best time to look for Florida bass as they are in spawning mode and are happy to attack a variety of lures. We will begin with the 7” Zoom® Trick Worm® in black. Black is our default followed by green or red tones.

Webb Wildlife Management Area south of Punta Gorda is less than an hour away from Englewood. We like the middle launch on 7-mile-long Webb Lake. Launching here assures us of a leeward shore to fish, as designers made this lake a fish habitat with meandering branches and spawning shallows. Heading either north or south gets us to cattails, grass shorelines, and lily pads. We usually choose plastic worms in the winter to work the deeper shorelines, but this time of year, frog lures take over as spring brings these amphibians out. Just listen for a few moments at sunset to verify that frogs are active. We use Zoom® Horny Toads® in either Watermelon Red or Watermelon Seed colors rigged weedless on a 5/0 wide gap hook. Ten-pound test with two feet of 20 lb. fluorocarbon that helps around vegetation that might break the lighter line. Toss this rig onto the shoreline vegetation and swim it back to you either on top or submerged for aggressive strikes.

North Port’s Cocoplum Waterway is an overlooked quality fishery. People can easily access this 9-mile-long canal, which parallels US41, at the Dallas White Park boat ramp off North Port Blvd. This little boat ramp is hardly ever busy and still functional, unlike the expensive plastic kayak launches lying around that Ian destroyed and that people haven’t replaced. There is plenty of free parking here and some shoreline fishing, too.

From this launch point, fishing is productive in either direction, with plentiful bass and panfish. Paddling west a short distance towards North Port Blvd. ends at the water treatment plant spillway that keeps saltwater below the spillway. A walkway constructed around the spillway had plastic kayak launches on each end. Unfortunately, this was never workable, as the walkway had switchbacks that kayaks would not bend around. Ian demolished the entire structure and left it unrepaired.

We’ve caught bass below the spillway in saltwater and snook on shiners above the spillway in freshwater. The same lure suggestions apply here with worms taking precedent during the day and frogs later in the afternoon if you hear them. Finally, let’s mention Wellen Park. This is one of the newer fisheries in our area, but aggressive stocking has created a freshwater fishery we enjoy. A bike path that provides shore access along most of its length surrounds Grand Lake, in the center of Wellen Park. Access ends in places where the path leaves the shoreline and kayak anglers take over.

There is a floating kayak launch and kayak rental shop on the lake. Parking is nearby, but we still recommend a dolly to get from parking to the launch. We also read online that there is a “simple sand launch” which would be our choice if true. Grand Lake provides adequate shelter from wind, regardless of its direction. Bring the usual bass lures and try plastic worms during the day and frog lures at sunset. Shore based fly anglers will appreciate the clear back cast area along the lake while casting poppers at sunset.

Kimball
Les Beery,
Launching at Webb Lake offers easy access to sheltered shorelines and prime spring bass habitat.

Robert Vetter, a boardcertified hearing instrument specialist in Englewood, sees this firsthand serving patients at Delta Hearing, a familyowned practice that has built a reputation for combining advanced technology with individualized care.

Operated by Grant Stevens, his wife, daughter Deanna and her husband, Delta Hearing emphasizes flexibility and patient choice, offering a wide range of hearing aid options across different manufacturers and price points.

Delta Hearing specializes in hearing aid services, custom fittings, and comprehensive hearing exams. The practice uses cutting-edge technology to evaluate hearing health and tailor solutions to enhance hearing.

Vetter, who has worked in the hearing industry for nearly 15 years, found his way to Delta after losing his office in 2022 following Hurricane Ian. Three years ago, Delta opened its Englewood office for Robert to continue serving Englewood residents.

Vetter said he has always considered Englewood home

“My focus here in Englewood is to make sure that every patient has the results they are looking for,” Robert said. “I take the time and extra effort to make sure they’re getting the results they anticipated. And there’s no better feeling than improving the auditory well-being of my patients.”

Within the last five years, Robert said advances in technology have surpassed the previous 50 years collectively, functioning similarly to high-end headphones while improving hearing as well. They now have Bluetooth connectivity and advanced sound processing.

“Eight years ago, we couldn’t help people hear the way we do now. There were no viable options. Today, it’s a different story. It’s incredible,” Robert said.

The most rewarding part of his work in Englewood is helping patients rediscover sounds they’ve been missing, leading to
