Family-Friendly Staycations in the LA-Area Wonderful and local “staycation” destinations that can give you that restful and fun getaway experience BY DOLORES QUINTANA Do you and your family need a break from pandemic life at home? Are you seeking relief from the everyday stresses of our new normal? Here’s a list of wonderful

and local “staycation” destinations that can give you that restful and fun getaway experience that you are looking for. While it’s well known that The Magic Castle is a private clubhouse that you either have to join or have a friend that can give you an invitation, what’s not as well known is that if you book a room at the Magic Castle Hotel, you can also book a dinner or brunch at renown clubhouse through the hotel’s Magic Nights Package. The package is good until June 15 of this year and includes a one night stay in a one bedroom suite and a $200 dining credit

Staycations, From page 1 at the Magic Castle, Sundays through Thursday only. The package costs $369 for a night’s stay, but with the $200 dining credit and entrance to the Magic Castle, it ends up being a bargain. A one bedroom suite sleeps up to five and has a full kitchen. The hotel itself has a heated pool, full sized snacks available at the front desk and a Popsicle Hotline for the kids. Just pick up the red phone, request a popsicle, and they will “magically appear”. Adults can have a popsicle too. The hotel is also close to Yamashiro Restaurant, The Hollywood Walk of Fame, the world famous Chinese Theatre, Universal Studios and Madame Tussauds Hollywood. While this option isn’t a package, a great day trip or staycation option is Topanga Canyon. If you are looking for an overnight stay, The Topanga Canyon Inn is a bed and breakfast where you can feel far away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles while you are still in Los Angeles. The Nick and Nora Room in the Casa Blanca portion of the B&B starts at $289 for a two night stay. The beaches in Malibu and the Getty Villa are fifteen minutes away from the Inn. The canyon has many options for healthy outdoor exercise and peaceful trips. You can ride horses on the canyon trails at LA Horseback Riding, there are hiking trails right outside of the door of the Inn, and the famous Inn Of The Seventh Ray restaurant is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Canyon Bakery is open on their “Sunday Funday” when they sell their delicious breads and pastries starting at 9:30 a.m. Another wonderful day trip or staycation option that is local to Los Angeles is the island of Catalina. You can take the Catalina Express to Avalon on Catalina Island daily from the port of Long Beach or San Pedro with four round trips on weekdays and six on weekends. The catamaran ferry ride only takes an hour and costs $30 to $40 dollars each way and you can choose to arrive in Avalon or Two Harbors. Catalina has a number of kid friendly entertainment options, including playgrounds, going on

an eco-tour to catch sight of bison, who live on the island, spend the day on one of Catalina’s three different beaches, take a zipline tour, go on the Catalina Aerial Adventure, a ropes course, a glass bottom boat tour, submarine rides, a sealife safari rib line boat tour to go dolphin and sea lion watching, go snorkeling, parasailing or tubing and more depending on the season that you go. Check out the Kidalina page for all of the activities. Some options like the Flying Fish Tour only happen between May and Sept during the time when the animals are most active. You can book boat and hotel reservations on the Catalina Express website here. Another amazing day trip for the family is The California Science Center at Exposition Park. The Space Shuttle Endeavor is actually on site as an exhibit in the Center and that’s just one of the Center’s numerous exhibits. Currently, Angkor: The Lost Empire of Cambodia brings 120 artifacts from Angkor Wat to the Center

to delight visitors. The Center’s IMAX theatre has three films: Under The Sea 3-D, Journey To Space 3-D and Angkor 3-D that play on a seven story screen and the center has three simulators, Flying Club, Endeavor Together, which simulates being aboard the Endeavor Shuttle, and Motion Based Simulator which plays films and simulates the motion and a VR transporter which uses virtual reality to give guests an immersive experience in a digital world. The Angkor Exhibit $19.95 for adults and $12.95 for children with discounts for combination tickets with the IMAX film presentations. The IMAX tickets cost $8.95 for adults and $6.75 for children. You could spend the day having a highly educational and awe inspiring day at the Science Center with your family. You can purchase tickets here. The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is a different kind of family day trip where you can learn about the creatures of the ocean and see them and, in some cases, touch them. Right now the new animals at the Aquarium include sea otter pup and female sandbar shark. The Shark Lagoon exhibit is home to sharks and rays and includes touch pools where you

could touch one of the animals if you are up for it. You can observe the animals in the Sea Otter Habitat, like that sea otter pup who was rescued off the coast at Pismo Beach. There’s the Frogs: Dazzling and Disappearing exhibit that can teach you and your family about the history of amphibians and Penguin Habit that is home to 20 Magellanic Penguins. The Southern California/ Baja Gallery is home to the state fish, the Garibaldi, and to the Seal and Sea Lion Habitat. One special exhibit, Animal Encounters: Feathered Friends, is where guests get to meet one of the Aquariums trained Ambassador Birds and take part in a training session and have a photo op with the bird. This special exhibit has an extra charge of $150 per person, but sounds like a truly special opportunity. It only takes place before the Aquarium opens and needs a 48 hour advance booking. Adults tickets for the Aquarium are priced at $36.95 per person and children’s tickets cost $26.95. The Aquarium also offers Scout Days, a Long Beach Harbor Tour to observe one of the world’s most active ports and the area’s Sea Lion population and a Grey Whale Watch from November to April.
