Outdoor Retailer to Close Westside Store Following Marina del Rey Opening Staff Were Informed Months Ago That the Lease Won’t Be Renewed By Zach Armstrong Shortly after the grand opening of a new location in the nearby Marina del Rey area, outdoor apparel retailer Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) is closing its Santa Monica store in the coming months. Staff at the 402 Santa Monica Blvd. location were informed months ago that REI won’t renew its lease and instead close on Feb. 29, 2024, a spokesperson said in an email. Further details on the closure were not disclosed. The Seattle-based chain looks to communicate with customers about the outpost’s final business day after the New Year.

“The decision to close was not made lightly, but after consideration to the positive impact of the store, our market presence, and external factors,” a spokesperson stated

in an email. “While Santa Monica remains a destination for locals and visitors alike, the needs of our customers and business have shifted over the nearly two decades that

we’ve served this community. The overall operating environment has also changed and the cost to do business.” Founded in 1938 by Lloyd and Mary Anderso, REI sells outdoor apparel and gear including camping gear, hiking, climbing, cycling, water, running, fitness, snow, travel equipment, and men, women and kids clothing. With 181 locations in 42 states and the District of Columbia, the specialty outdoor retailer proclaims itself as the nation’s largest consumer co-op. Since 2006, REI has been part of Santa Monica while a dozen other locations are scattered throughout the Los Angeles area. On Sept. 8, the grand opening was held for its 23.500 square-foot Marina del Rey store adjacent to the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. The occasion was met with protestors who demanded the business cut ties with a nonprofit partner that supports the controversial “Ballona Wetlands Restoration Project”, a $250 million bulldozing and restoration project set for the marshes.

SMPD Seeks Robbers Who Stole $50K Worth of Luxurious Purses Four Masked Suspects Forcibly Entered the Store, Bypassing Front Door Security.

On Nov. 27 around 10:55 a.m., Santa Monica Police Department Officers were dispatched to The Real Real store situated near the 200 block of 26th Street to probe a recent smash-and-grab style robbery that involved multiple suspects. During the investigation, officers discovered that four masked suspects forcibly entered the luxury resale store, bypassing the front door security. Once inside, they utilized hammers to break open several display cases containing high-end purses valued at over $50,000. Subsequently, the suspects fled the

premises in a getaway vehicle. Amid a surge in organized retail thefts in August 2023, the Santa Monica Police Department joined forces with the Los Angeles Police Department to establish the Los Angeles County Organized Retail Crime Taskforce (ORCT). This collaborative task force consolidated resources from diverse agencies to investigate and prosecute organized retail theft rings commonly associated with such crimes. The theft incident is currently under investigation by the taskforce, which has apprehended more than 90 individuals linked to similar criminal activities. Individuals possessing any additional information are encouraged to reach out to Santa Monica’s ORCT representative, Detective M. Castruita, at Michael. Castruita@santamonica.gov.

California Brunch Destination to Open on Ocean Ave

Mark Tremonti of Creed

Sings Sinatra

January 13, 2024 Doors 6pm. Show 8:00pm.

Mark Tremonti, rocker and founding member for Creed, Alter Bridge and Tremonti, takes the Stage at The Saban Theatre for a special, inspiring and heart-warming performance. The lights go down. Familiar horns pipe up from a world-class orchestra as piano twinkles. Then, the voice kicks in. It has all of the smoky splendor those first few notes hinted at, but it ain’t Ol’ Blue Eyes. In a tailored suit with microphone in hand, it’s Mark Tremonti. The GRAMMY® Award-winning multiplatinum musician who shreds his soul out as the guitarist for Alter Bridge and Creed. Moreover, he’s doing it for a reason that’d make the Chairman of the Board proud. Accompanied by surviving members of Sinatra’s band as well as various top-notch players, Tremonti cut 14 classics for Tremonti Sings Sinatra, which he gifted to the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) as part of his new organization Take A Chance For Charity.

A mere week after extensive renovations and a grand reopening, surveillance footage shows homelessness threatening the conditions of the promenade’s Twelve Twelve restaurant and its staff. In a less-than-minute video reported by Fox 11, an employee is seen opening the door to confront a (presumably homeless) suspect who is trying to break into the restaurant. The staff member uses some sort of rod to tassel

and take jabs at the man. Eventually, the suspect was able to enter the business and is seen causing damage such as throwing down a patio light and ripping objects from desks. Located at 1212 3rd Street Promenade, Twelve Twelve underwent a recent transformation under the leadership of CEO Lucian Tudor. New additions feature a new Executive Chef, a new American Italian Menu, Italian-inspired Cocktails and Discoteca—a live entertainment experience. Its revitalization was met with a grand reopening event just last week. According to Fox 11, the restaurant owner says the business is “being plagued by homeless crime.” The footage can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=wKYjmAv0-90.

Third Street Celebrity Bakery Closes Its Doors

The Residence Reportedly Features an Array of Lavish Amenities The Robb Report is reporting that after Green Mountain co-founder Bob Stiller finalized a $170 million transaction, in which he sold an oceanfront mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, a trust linked to Stiller disbursed $7.6 million to acquire a Santa Monica residence. The residence reportedly features an array of lavish amenities including five ensuite bedrooms, a gym with mirrored walls, a soundproof movie theater, a marble-topped wet bar, and expansive 22-foot-wide glass pocket doors, all within an entirely new contemporary farmhouse. Vaccine Mandate S.M.a.r.t Column: Lawsuit Against SANTA MONICA CITY Santa Monica School COUNCIL 2024 Dismissed by Judge SMa.r.t. A Student Sought to Halt the Mandate’s Enforcement and Also Pursued Compensatory Damages.

A judge at the Santa Monica Superior Court, Lisa K. Sepe-Wiesenfeld, has dismissed a lawsuit brought forth by former Santa Monica Community College student Carter Sparks, reported Express Healthcare Management. The lawsuit, filed in January 2022, contended that the college’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for in-person learning infringed upon Sparks’ religious freedom and right to privacy. Judge Sepe-Wiesenfeld granted the college’s motion to dismiss the remaining claims in Sparks’ case, which included claims for declaratory relief and alleged violations of equal protection, the Education, and Government Codes. The lawsuit aimed to challenge the constitutionality of the vaccine mandate and argued that it exceeded the district’s authority. Sparks sought injunctive relief to halt the mandate’s enforcement and also pursued compensatory damages. However, the judge ruled that the

changing public health landscape since the mandate’s implementation negated any reasonable expectation of the contested conduct recurring. Moreover, regarding the equal protection claim, the judge found Sparks unable to demonstrate differential treatment compared to similarly situated individuals. Insufficient evidence was provided by Sparks to substantiate alleged damages or to contest the constitutional validity of the decision made by Susan Fila, the health services officer at Santa Monica College.

and included the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Residents were central to the planning process and kept safe under thoughtful, mostly slow-growth policies that respected the natural beauty, history, and limited resources of our environment. Quality of life mattered. Residents mattered. Due to new challenges brought on by the influence of both internal and external special interest groups, individual agendas and ideologies, misdirected state mandates, and persistent greed, Santa Monica has experienced a decade of unsustainable over-development, all in the face of a crushing global climate crisis. With much more over-development in the pipeline, Santa Monica is in need of local visionaries interested in creating a truly sustainable City and restoring the Council to its original design and purpose of serving its residents, both current and future. The Position: SM a.r.t is actively seeking and encouraging City Council candidate(s) interested in restoring the historic institution to the original blueprint specifications. The refurbishment will focus on issues of structural integrity, form, function, and curb appeal. Competitive candidates will be established residents (threeyear minimum) with a history of local civic participation and a strong interest in resident issues. Preference will be given to those who surf, sunbathe, read, walk on the beach, or another sand-oriented activity that reminds you Santa Monica is a beach town. The successful candidate(s) will have innovative ideas for preserving historic mandates while fostering a sustainable future in a livable, fiscally sound, and responsibly developed city. Must be honest, tenacious, have a thick skin, and have the fortitude to endure late-night, contentious meetings. The successful candidate(s) will have the support and backing of SM a.r.t.
