Man Guilty of Juan Castillo Murder Sherwin Mendoza Espinosa faces 40 to life. By Sam Catanzaro A Los Angeles man has been found guilty in the 2017 murder of an 18-year old Santa Monica High School graduate and now faces a potential life sentence. On Tuesday, August 21 Deputy District Attorney Keri Modder announced that a 43-year-old Los Angeles man named Sherwin Mendoza Espinosa was found guilty by a jury in the murder of Juan Castillo on February 26, 2017. The jury found Espinosa guilty of one count of second-degree murder (an unpremeditated killing) and also found true the allegation that Espinosa used a handgun in the murder. Sentencing is set to begin on October 12, in Department W82 of the Los

Angeles County Superior Court, Airport Branch. Espinosa is facing 40 years to life in state prison. According to the District Attorney's Office, this hearing will take no more than one day. Castillo, who played football at Santa Monica High School and graduated in 2016, was found shortly after 5 a.m. on February 26, 2017, on the 1300 block of 16th Street in Santa Monica with a single gunshot wound to the head. The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) have linked the murder to another murder that occurred earlier that night at 12:45 a.m. that took place on the 2100 block of Pico Boulevard. “Through an extensive and thorough investigation conducted by the Santa Monica Police Department, it was determined that Juan Castillo’s death was related to an earlier shooting that occurred,” reads an SMPD press release from August 22. The SMPD arrested Mendoza on May 19, 2017, after several months of investigating.

At 6:05 a.m. Thursday morning, a woman was shot in the thigh at the west end of the Santa Monica Pier. The woman remains in the hospital in stable condition while the shooter remains at large. "One of our local fishermen here contacted a harbor guard and told them that someone on the west end of the pier required some type of medical attention. The harbor guard went over to that area and made contact with the female who had a single gunshot wound in her thigh area," said

The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office and some local news outlets initially reported that Espinosa was from Santa Monica. However, Ricardo Santiago, a Public Information Officer for the D.A.'s Office told the Santa Monica Mirror that Espinosa is in fact from Los Angeles and that the online press-release inaccurate.

Desalinating Santa Monica Bay?

This could soon change, however, as local water experts consider the possibility of removing the salt from the ocean to make it drinkable in a process known as desalination. It is a myth the greater Los Angeles area is a desert but its semi-arid climate still does not produce enough water to sustain the nearly 20 million residents. In fact, 90 percent of the drinking water for the areas comes from either the Colorado River or Nothern California. "That water travels around 400 miles to get

Hoek was speaking at a PRO/CON debate on the Santa Monica Pier on Tuesday, August 20 about the pros and cons of ocean water desalination. This is the process of filtering and processing salt water from the ocean to remove marine life and salt to make the water drinkable. Cutting down on cutting down trees?

Protecting trees on private property in Santa Monica. By Tor Marom

A potential ordinance which would protect trees on private property in Santa Monica may be getting more attention in the near future. At the August 20, Santa Monica Task Force on the Environment meeting, supporters pushed for further discussion on the entry of protective language into City Code. Jerry Rubin, Santa Monica peace activist and founder of environmental groups such as Treesavers and Tree Hugging Friends, is very optimistic about the potential changes. However, he says that this is not the first time such an ordinance has been proposed. “Ten years ago it was proposed,” Rubin said. “Some members of the Urban Forest Task Force at the time… wanted to include all the public trees and private trees together in a comprehensive ordinance.” This comes with a level of frustration for some who have worked towards expanding the protections. Grace Phillips, chair of the Urban Forest Task Force (UFTF), voiced issues with the slow process. “We’re just a task force, which means we are purely advisory,” Phillips said, “and we have now advised the City [to adopt such changes] three or four times.”

Phillips says that the UFTF has pushed for Santa Monica to adopt similar protections to those in the city of Pasadena, which she says are visibly successful in urban canopy studies of the area. “Pasadena has gone up by 9 percent and [Santa Monica] has gone down by 15 percent,” Phillips said. Property development in Santa Monica is largely to blame according to Phillips. “What developers are doing now is they’re buying old houses and scraping the lot from corner to corner,” Phillips said. “If the City of Santa Monica had a Pasadena-like ordinance… they would only be able to scrape the building.” In many of these cases, Phillips says, the developers eventually need to plant new trees, having not been aware of the value of preexisting mature trees. Now that there is tangible evidence from the March 2017 canopy study in Los Angeles County, evidence which backs up the UTFT’s claims, the slow moving process has become more daunting for Phillips. “[The numbers] said what we thought they’d say,” Phillips said. “I was really dismayed that that wasn’t enough for Council to get into action.” While Phillips is not very hopeful that the potential ordinance will come to fruition, some believe that bringing the discussion back to the forefront is a great step forward. Cris Gutierrez, co-chair of Climate Action Santa Monica, is much more optimistic on the topic. “It’s really in the healthy early stages,” Phil-

lips said. “Jerry [Rubin] wisely went to the Task Force on the Environment to give them a heads up that this is where he and the community members would like to advance our urban tree considerations.” While no official actions have yet been taken, Gutierrez believes that moving such an ordinance into discussion is very helpful to the upcoming process. The possible ordinance will be put on the Task Force on the Environment’s agenda in coming months, but no date has been publicly announced at this time.

A City Crying for Change SMa.r.t. Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow

In the waning days of summer, SMa.r.t. (Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow) turns its thoughts to the fall which means the upcoming elections where residents will elect a City Council that might actually try to help solve the important issues confronting the residents of our City.t If we were to make a list of those issues, number one might be personal safety. With crime up about 18% since the last election, with seniors being mugged and assaulted in broad daylight downtown, and the Ocean Park library vandalized, the crime reduction prognosis is not good. Likewise res-

idents, who are paying one of the highest sales tax rates in the State, see their spendthrift City Council wasting their money buying $2 million toilets in Clover Park and spending at least $5 million (the equivalent of about 10 affordable units) in an unnecessary court case to forestall City Council elections by District; not to mention the runaway inflated payroll and pension time bomb they ignore. Again the prognosis does not look good for what should be a fiscally prudent City. Finally, mobility (or really the lack of it) is an ongoing crisis. Our City is still in complete gridlock, our public transit is losing ridership and now we have the Blithely-Inviting-Random-Disaster scooters menacing our pedestrians daily. In spite of great progress being made on new bike paths and other worthy transit initiatives, we are in no way prepared to

zon. One is the City Council 3 term limit initiative on November’s ballot. While the impact of this would not be felt for another 12 years, if passed in November, it would eventually slowly start to eliminate incumbents thereby creating more opportunities for new blood to emerge. It is a well-known axiom of politics that new candidates come into office with high ideals and wonderful responsiveness to their voters. But over time, while they are learning to be more effective in their role, simultaneously they lose their responsive edge, fatigue sets in and they become more accountable to their donors rather than to their original ideals and voters. Just look at our current Council and their actions as evidence. This process, sometimes called “drinking the kool-aid”, is universal with very few exceptions: remember our Council persons are both volunteers and human. Term limits will hopefully will short-circuit this “natural” process. The second reason for hope is unfolding in a Los Angeles courtroom right now. This is a lawsuit brought by Maria Loya against the City for discrimination against minority residents of the Pico Neighborhood by the

I am asked the question every week, “Does it make sense to put money in my house or am I just throwing my money out?” When I answer that question, I am very careful to ask a couple of questions before answering the primary. I want to know if you are remodeling your home for yourself to live in and enjoy or in anticipation of getting it ready to go on the market. Most homeowners will answer that they have no intentions of selling and that they will probably live in their house at least for the next 3 to 10 years. My answer across the board is always “Make your house comfortable for yourself and do what you would do to enjoy it most. This is your home and you may as well live in it.” If you can afford to do the best then do it, and in the best way you can. If you’ve always dreamed of having a remodeled kitchen or adding french doors to your master bedroom that go outside to a beautiful yard, then go ahead and do that. Your property will appreciate naturally as it does with the market. Of course, if the market declines, your house and every other house will decline along with it. In the meantime, the property tends to increase in value very steadily given that the strong demand that we have from buyers and the very limited supply. The west side is growing all the time with the technology and entertainment industries centering right here in our areas. These people are paying top dollars for their homes and they want this location for convenience. As far as making your home suitable to the buyer, this is really unrealistic. Today’s buyers have very specific ideas of what they want. Even if you remodel a house and spend a lot of money, it probably wont suit their needs. Its best not to go down that

path in thinking about what you want to do. Just make your home comfortable for yourself and spend your money moderately. Don’t try to make a bunch of improvements to your home thinking that it will increase your property value. That is not the way to analyze the situation. Trends are changing all the time and buyers have very specific ideas about what they want. They may want to tear your house down completely or do a major renovation. As soon as you go ahead and make these improvements to your home thinking that you’ve improved the value, the buyer will come in there and want something entirely different. It just is not realistic to try and anticipate what a buyer may want in 3 to 5 years from now, not knowing what the trends will be then and not knowing who the buyer is going to be. Is the buyer going to be a developer who is going to build something for yet another buyer? Or, is the buyer going to be a young couple who is going to use your house as a working space and living space both? Do they have children? Do they entertain a lot? Do they desire an open space floor plan with very few walls, or do they want a home that has some extra rooms that they can use for guests, an office, or the possibility of Airbnb? The possibilities are endless, and it isn’t realistic to anticipate. People often ask me “Should we put in a pool?” My answer is “Put in a pool if you want a pool, but if you don’t, then don’t put in a pool”. Never put in a pool thinking that this will increase your home’s value, and never make any improvements thinking that you will get a better return than the cost of making the improvements itself. I am hopeful that my point is clear. Enjoy your home and make the improvements that you have always dreamed of. Let the market escalate naturally and take advantage of the market when it is in your favor.

deal with the mobility problems aggravated by the escalated development pressures caused by the light rail line and the ongoing downtown metastasis. These are all problems that have been around for a long time and have worsened during the watch of the existing City Council. Now three of the incumbents are running for reelection and given past history are highly likely to be re-elected. Given that past history, the probability that this likely re-elected City Council will solve or at least improve these issues is unfortunately rather small. The existing Council is not nimble enough, independent enough, nor visionary enough to move the needle on crime, fiscal responsibility or mobility, not to mention the really BIG problems our City faces such as sea level rise (eg climate change), water shortage, energy sustainability, housing affordability, self-driving cars, and a possible recession on the horizon. It’s not that the existing Council hasn’t tried to face these problems, but successful results have not been evident to the residents. What about new blood on the City Council? The electable challenging candidates (for example Brock or Marlowe or Melkonians among others) who have enough name recognition, having served the City by countless hours of public volunteer service, thereby learning the ropes of how the City runs, have all withdrawn due to the high cost of running, by the inability to secure the vital Santa Monica for Renter’s Rights or the out of town Hotel Workers Union endorsements, and by the asymmetry of running against developer funded incumbents. The advantages of incumbency have historically been so overwhelming, that regardless how you might feel about a particular challenger’s desirability, they face an impossible fight against the interlocking interests of the embedded political machine that runs the City. With this dismal prognosis, there are still two reasons for hope on the distant hori-

FROM SANTA MONICA TO PARIS A Santa Monican’s journey to medaling in dance at the 10th anniversary of the Gay Games. By Brianna Kwasnik Ten years ago, now Santa Monica resident, Jo Popadynetz was asked what her goal was when signing up for a local gym. The person signing her up laughed when she told them she wanted to compete in the Gay Olympics. While it was a dream of hers, it was not yet set in motion. This August, her and her dance partner, Deborah Fields Perez took home the bronze medal at the 10th annual Gay Games held in Paris, for the Women’s Senior Latin for the World Championship. The pair placed third out of 361 participants in the contest.

The Gay Games is held every four years and offers over 36 different sporting events. Participants can compete solo or as part of a team. This year brought out over 10,000 competitors from over 70 countries. Popadynetz’ journey to dance began in 2016 when a friend told her of a gay social dance class being held by Liora Paniz. Here, she fell in love with dancing because she got to lead for the first time. The instructors she’s had made her feel very welcome by honoring her wish to lead in dance. Some instructors have begun saying “leader and follower” rather than “man and woman” in terms of who leads the dance. “It was like a whole world opened up,” she said. “Dancing makes the whole world disappear, you can’t think of anything else but the steps, your arms, your partner and the music.” She soon found out that Paniz was giving private lessons and taking her students to a same-sex ballroom dance competition in the Latin category in Ohio. “Jo was immediately ready to go after the

Apart from justice for minority voters, if the District elections suit wins, it would make it cheaper for challengers in all districts to get elected, and equally important would make every council person more responsive to their individual voters. It does, however, require local candidates to be groomed in each district to be ready to be effective Councilpersons. Your City Council spent at least $5 mil-

lion of your money to fight, in court, District elections and to protect their safe Citywide seats rather than have to meet the fine grain needs of their local voters. In other words, public dollars are being used to protect incumbents: another example of the dominant advantage of incumbency. Term limits and district-wide elections are good future improvements but unfortunately are probably too late (given election risks and court delays) for this election. So are we doomed to another 2 years of a City Council that barely keeps the City afloat as it takes on more water? A political odds maker would probably say yes, but SMa.r.t. would love to be proven wrong. Vote for a change this November. Sergeant Rudy Flores of the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Criminal Investigations Division. Officers responded to the scene and began to question the women. Her initial statement said a male Hispanic in his 20s to 30s had shot her but according to Sgt. Flores she was, and remains uncooperative with authorities. “She was very vague as far as the information and his description. She even made mention that he was possibly accompanied by another female Hispanic,” Sgt. Flores said. She was then transported a local hospital where she remains in stable condition. “It is a non-critical, non-life-threatening wound,” Sgt. Flores said. "Unfortunately, she continues to be uncooperative at the hospital with our officers, detectives and even the medical staff. We have very minimal information at this time and are exploring all possible leads." At one point on Thursday, the SMPD had divers go into the water off the pier to search for evidence, including the handgun that was reportedly used in the shooting. The far west end of the pIer was closed from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and has now been reopened. The police are still investigating this case and more information may be made available after we publish. from page 8 prior, Fields Pere said she saw that Jo had natural talent and given her dedication, she knew she would put in the work and give it her all. “I took on the challenge, because I could see in her eyes how much it meant to her,” Fields Perez said. “I couldn’t say no if I wanted to.” Fields Perez immediately got to work choreographing five dances for the competition. The next challenge was for the pair to learn the moves and focus on how to properly execute the dances. Jo said she danced as often as she could afford, given that dance classes were private lessons. She often practiced at home, working on memorizing the choreography. Arriving in Paris for the first time was emotional for Popadynetz. “To see all the same sex couples on the dance floor rehearsing together and the music playing in this space where it’s safe and celebrated, it was overwhelming emotionally,” Popadynetz said. “Never before have I felt that kind of welcome and community.” Popadynetz said the experience overall hadn’t fully set in until her and Fields Perez returned to the states and she had a moment to process it all. For now, she’s not sure exactly what the future holds, but she said “I know this: I’m not going to stop dancing. I’m just going to put one foot in front of the other right now.”

The Santa Monica College campus flooded with attendees ready to see legendary Henry Rollins and celebrate the last of three KCRW Summer Nights’ Backyard Parties on Saturday, Aug. 18. “Its always exciting to hear your favorite people's favorite songs,” attendee Ruby Smith said. “And he was so funny! Kinda raunchy at times so it felt like authentic Rollins.” The night was filled with dancing, food trucks selected by KCRW’s Good Food and a vinyl pop-up shop. The Summer Nights’ Backyard Party series showed off the new KCRW head-

quarters that they moved into last December. “The new digs are wild,” Smith said. “I know KCRW has been working in their basement on the SMC campus for decades but they deserve a fancy, sparkly building. Reimagined Pier Concerts Series to take place in fall rather than summer to keep crowds manageable. By Brianna Kwasnik After the first Twilight Concert of summer 2017 brought an estimated 50,000 people to Santa Monica, the City and the Santa Monica Pier Corporation have re-imagined the event for this year. Contemporary R&B singer, Khalid, kicked off last year’s summer series bringing in a record-breaking crowd. The pier deck quickly reached capacity, with concertgoers flooding the beach for a chance to hear the singer live. The sheer number of concertgoers grew to be a public safety concern, resulting in the Santa Monica Police Department bringing in resources from L.A. county and surrounding communities to meet demand, Constance Farrell, Public Information Officer for The Santa Monica Government said. Given the difficulty of estimating how many attendees will show up to each concert, the City aired on the side of caution and kept the resources they had for the first concert for the remainder of the summer. “There was direction from City Council for this series to have a serious focus on ensuring more manageable crowd size,” Farrell said. Another major difference this year is trying to get concertgoers to stay on the pier. Executive Director of the Santa Monica Pier Corporation, Negin Singh said, “Truly, if folks are on the beach during the series, you will not be having a twilight experience.” Rather than having one main stage for the music, there will be three stages: one in the main pier deck area, a second in Pacific Park, and a third on the west end.

“The Pier Corporation is trying to bring the focus to the pier celebration, not a pier and beach celebration,” Singh said. The Pier Corporation conducted extensive research before booking musical acts to ensure they had a wide variety of acts. The corporation looked into ticket sales, concert venues booked and sold out in our area, who the artists was touring with, social media, major releases, to avoid repeating the situation of last year where Khalid had several major releases on pop radio, before playing at the pier. “These are really interesting and cool people doing awesome stuff within their genre,”

Singh said, “I don’t think we settled with any of these names.” Though Snapchat is still the sponsor for the event, there will not be Snapchat activations as attendees may have been used to in the past. This year the City Council and Pier Corporation decided to focus on local art installations and activations, a decision they said Snapchat was entirely supportive of. While there are a diverse number of cultures being represented in the music series, there is also an emphasis on things local to the Santa Monica/ LA area. IndieCade will have a few of their games set up in place of the activations and Smorgasburg festival will be bringing six to eight food vendors each week specific to the culture that the pier is representing. The Pier Corporation has found local muralists to display their pieces at the event. “We want to take it away from being a beach party, and more of an art walk happening on the pier,” Singh said. There will be a bag check at all three entrances before getting into the event to ensure that the pier will be a total safe zone. The Pier Corporation hopes to get as many people to the City as possible for the event safely and productively. They encourage concertgoers to look into mobility options of getting to the show: Uber or Lyft, Big Blue Bus, Metro or taking a bike and using the bike valet. For $4 I think these fries are a bit overpriced but the value of the burger offsets this price tag. While the burger was the centerpiece of the meal, the milkshake was also top-notch. Like the burger, HiHo sticks to the basics when it comes to milkshakes. Available in either vanilla or chocolate this milkshake actually tastes like milk rather than just sugar as many milkshakes do. The Miseducation of Cameron Post (Not Rated) 91 Minutes Released August 3 “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” is based on a true story written in novel form Emily M. Danforth. It takes place in the early 90’s when it was not generally acceptable to come out as gay. We live in a different time, although conversion camps still exist such as the one where this story takes place. The film premiered at Sundance 2018, where it won the US Grand Jury Prize. Cameron Post, played beautifully by the talented Chloe Grace Moretz, dutifully attends the Bible Study classes to which she is sent to by her conservative aunt who cares for her after the death of her parents. Cameron acts on her attraction to a female classmate in this Bible Study group and later is caught making out with the girl she has double-dated with at prom. As a result, she is packed off to “God’s Promise” religious camp where she and fellow live-in attendees must each sign an induction contract committing them to defeat the “illness” of same-sex attraction, or “SSA.”

The question remains, are these kids sent to the institution because they are thought to be ill, or because they are perceived subliminally as a threat to the lifestyles and religious beliefs of their parents, guardians and members of their church groups. Chloe Grace Moretz does not shy away from giving an all-out, very real, graphic performance as Cameron. At age 21, Chloe has experience beyond her years. She has been acting since she was seven. She is not afraid to take on a controversial role. In 2010, at thirteen, she appeared as Hit-Girl in the film “Kick-Ass” and again in “Kick-Ass 2” in 2013. Her role as a child in this comic book-inspired violent action film spurred controversy, yet won her critical acclaim. In real life, Chloe has described her own family as “very Christian” and at the same time has publicly supported LGBTQ equality. She calls herself a feminist and has rejected roles that she considers overtly sexualized or mere female plot devices. Also notable are Sasha Lane as Cameron’s friend Jane Fonda, Forrest Goodluck (who was Hawk in “Revenant”) as Reverend Rick and John Gallagher Jr (Jim Harper in “Newsroom”)

as Reverend Rick, a counselor at the camp who has supposedly been “cured” and is now dealing with an undercurrent of painful personality issues. The camera works with the actors to capture unspoken feelings as it lingers on their facial reactions. This is a well-directed, powerful film. Iron-

ically, the placement together of these teens at the conversion camp has the effect of unifying those who have been outcast by their peers and their communities. Cameron and her two new best friends gain strength, courage and power to take back their lives, though not in the way the camp’s proprietors intended.

“Crazy Rich Asians” will be known as the movie that opened worldwide box office channels for the Asian market. First and foremost, however, this is simply an extraordinarily well-crafted film that tells a wonderful story peopled with a hilarious and fascinating collection of characters. The setting is Singapore, the families are Asian and the cultural background of most of the players happens to be upper class Chinese. Aside from that, the film is a universal “dramedy” about human needs, fears, hopes, despair, dreams, anger and love. Director Jon M. Chu coincidentally is related to the family detailed in the novel by Kevin Kwan on which the film is based. Chu has mounted this story amidst a setting as colorful and vibrant as a 1930’s Busby Berkeley musical and as upbeat as a Bollywood extravaganza. He is one detail-oriented director. Every shot is staged beautifully and shot flawlessly. For example, the grandmother’s mansion was created in Kuala Lumpur from the ruins of two former government buildings. The crew cleared jungle plants, monkey poop and bats from the structures, stenciled the floors to look like expensive tile and hired a muralist to decorate the walls. The soundtrack by composer Brian Tyler drives the emotions in each scene and includes both Eastern and Western music. Enjoy the amazing work of the production designers and the costume designer, Mary E. Vogt. Although the cast of characters is large, you will feel that you know and identify with each one. Rated PG-13 120 Minutes Released August 15 the TV series “Fresh Off the Boat,” sticks her landing in her first major feature film lead as Rachel Chu. Henry Golding is perfectly cast as Nick Young, also playing his first lead in a major feature. The whole cast is superb. Standouts are Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young, Gemma Chan as Astrid Young Teo, and Lisa Lu as the grandmother, “Ah Ma.” Awkwafina and Ken Jeong had the audience rolling in laughter. The story flows with an established rhythm from beginning to end, never losing its beat. The whole film plays like a beautifully choreographed ballet telling a moving story. It’s a classic tale, told extremely well and full of twists and surprises. Cultural prejudice is addressed headon. It’s “Pride and Prejudice” set in modern-day Singapore. The story is bookended by games being played by the heroine, Rachel, which demand concentrated skill in psychological warfare and subtle manipulation. Those qualities seem to be playing leading roles on the world stage right now. Make this movie a must-see before your summer is over. Key Steps to a Healthy, Happy Liver With Barbara Bishop

Last week, I had my gallbladder removed. My doctors discovered that it was inflamed, and contained many gallstones. One of the gallstones was stuck in a pathway where the gallbladder, pancreas and liver distilled and digested the food and drinks I consumed. It was the most excruciating pain I have experienced. And no matter what I did, the pain would not subside without some powerful prescription drugs that I certainly did not want to use on a regular basis. My liver and pancreas enzyme levels were off the charts (that’s not good.) My eyes were a little yellowish, I was throwing up and I had a rash all over my body (that’s not good either.) And my pee and poo (can I talk about them in public?) were turning weird colors. The only reason I went to the doctor to get checked out was because I had that rash all over my body, and it was hideously unattractive. Thank goodness for my healthy ego! Miraculously, my body managed to pass the stone soon after the appointment. But the gallbladder had to go. Everyone says that the gallbladder

doesn’t do much when it comes to staying healthy. As far as I’m concerned, it now leaves my liver exposed to all the toxins that the gallbladder was able to distill. Now that I don’t have that safety net, there’s no way around it; I need to drastically change my habits so that my liver stays healthy and happy. I know the drill – eat more veggies, get more exercise, lose more weight. But there were a few that Web MD listed that caught me by surprise: Drink Coffee People who drink a few cups of coffee a day may be less likely to get liver diseases. Filtered, instant and espresso all seem to work. My personal choice is Yuban – my favorite of all coffees. Sorry Starbucks! Supplements Can Cause Liver Damage Supplements cause almost a quarter of all liver damage. Herbs like borage, comfrey, groomwell and coltsfoot have pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can gum up the tiny blood vessels inside the organ, either over time or all at once Other herbs like Atractylis gummifera, Camellia sinensis, celandine, chaparral, germander and pennyroyal oil (used in tea) can also cause liver problems. I don’t take any of them. They all taste like dirt and give me heartburn. Liver Remedies Can Cause Liver Damage Common liver remedies like milk thistle, turmeric and astragalus don’t have much research behind them. Colloidal silver,

sometimes used (with little scientific support) for hepatitis C, can cause irreversible side effects like turning your skin blue. From yellow to blue. Attractive. Avoid Toxins These might be chemicals in cleaning products, insecticides and spray cans. They could hurt cells in your liver if you touch, absorb or breathe in too much of them. You can protect yourself if you wear a mask and goggles and open the windows when you use them. I wonder if using bleach to turn my hair blonde is a toxic substance. Hmm. I’ll take my chances. Green Tea It’s brimming with a type of antioxidant called catechins. Research suggests it may

protect against some forms of cancer, including liver. You’ll get more catechins if you brew tea yourself and drink it hot. Iced tea and ready-to-drink green teas have much lower levels. Almonds Nuts – including these – are good sources of vitamin E, a nutrient that research suggests may help protect against fatty liver disease. Almonds are good for your heart, too, so grab a handful the next time you feel like snacking. Or try them in salads, where they add a nice crunch. My favorite nut! Herbs and Spices Want to protect your liver and your heart at the same time? Sprinkle on some oregano, sage or rosemary. They’re a good source of healthy polyphenols. An extra benefit: they help you cut back on salt in many recipes. I just planted an herb garden that contains parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano and basil. I started using them this week. I feel so organic! Practice Safe Sex If you’re like me, not having it is the best way to practice safe sex (not by choice, damn it.) But if you do have sex, protect yourself from conditions that can spread through sex. One, hepatitis C, infects the liver directly and can do serious harm over time. Most people don’t notice they have it until many years later, when much of the damage has been done.
