Thousands of Santa Monicans came together Saturday evening, June 30, for the annual Celebrate America event on Corsair Field at Santa Monica College.

All involved hailed the event as a complete success, with many dressing up for the occasion and making it a highlight of the summer calendar.

“This is one event that we just never miss,” resident Cathy Stoole told The Mirror. “It’s something that we look forward to every year and it’s just always so much fun!”

Travelling from Inglewood into Santa Monica for the celebration, family of four, the

Prince’s, said that their kids have grown up with the celebration as part of their lives; so much so that young Samuel attended when he was only 4 months old.

“I think that’s why he sleeps so well!” joked Wendy Prince. “He got used to fireworks and loud music at such a young age!”

The event saw an entire afternoon of entertainment take to the stage, with most attendees brining in blankets, picnics and comfy lounging equipment.

There was also the opportunity to find out more about Santa Monica College, learn about the arts’ programs, Broad Stage and KCRW, before the main event – fireworks!

NEW PERSPECTIVES Capturing Santa Monica

Walking the streets of Santa Monica took on new light Monday, July 2, for photographer Ray Cook. The world traveler, international school teacher and artist captured angles that many residents miss as they go about their daily lives.

“There’s something about Santa Monica that keeps bringing me back,” Cook told The Mirror, making visiting the city an annual event. “It’s always so vibrant and alive, and there is always something new to see.”

Cook, who grew up in San Diego, has lived the last 23 years in Asia and spends at least three months a year traveling the

world.

“I love exploring new cities and landscapes,” Cook said, adding that he gets captivated by light and goes from there.

Last year Santa Monica Pier was the most Instagrammed attraction in Los Angeles, with L.A. the sixth-most Instagrammed place in the world.

For Cook, he likes to venture beyond the popular, avoiding “selfie-walls” and set-up locations.

“It’s all about the small details that just fall into place in the most ordinary, yet exceptional, way,” he said, explaining that most of his work happens when he least expects it to.

Golfers of all ages took a swing on the course.

Google popped up in Santa Monica this weeekend. The search engine giant, known for its mapping system, email and cloud storage appeared on the Third Street Promenade to introduce people to its new hardware technology, Google Home.

Saturday June 30, people traveled from across the southland to check out the new technology which was introduced through an interactive round of mini golf.

“The Google pop-up in Los Angeles is a way to experience Google Home with the use of Google Assistant,” explained Pepe Xicohtencatl, a media correspondent for Google. “There are three different devices on display, Google Home, Google Home Mini and the larger Google Home Max.” Upon entering the pop up Saturday, attendees were provided with golf clubs, a score card and a colorful ball. Each hole of Google’s mini golf experience focused on a different aspect of the technology’s capabilities. “Turn on a light using your voice on the first hole, or a TV on the second, you can even ask Google Assistant to start a fan,” said Xicohtencatl. Golfers could be heard throughout the golf course speaking to the devices at the start of each hole by calling out, “Hey Google!”

While some noticed the pop-up while walking down the promenade, others found out about the

event through Facebook, and few had watched a video about the mini golf course on Google’s blog.

Outside of the building, couples, trios and quartets waited for their chance to face off in a round of mini golf. Sam, Sarah and Ilani were visiting from Fort Lauderdale. “We really wanted to see the sunset and we just decided to do everything we can around the area; and we just walked down this street and it’s kind of a busy nice street to be on,” said Sam. The trio had just finished their round of golf and were walking out with their complimentary Google socks, a parting gift for those that completed the course.

Friends Hasan and Mike had traveled from Pasadena and Downtown Los Angeles to the pop-up and were excited about playing a round against each other. “I saw some pictures online and it looks like it was set up pretty well” stated Hasan.

“And I just came to beat him,” stated Mike with a smile, “I beat him in Topgolf already, and now I need to be him in a different kind of golf.”

After a run a six day run, the Google Home Mini Golf course closed on July 5. The next city on it will pop-up in will be Atlanta Georgia from July 26 through July 29. In addition to Santa Monica, New York And Chicago also hosted the larger than life course.

“Our Very Own Carlin McCullough” CENTER S TA G E

Amanda Peet once said, “As an actor, my main focus is finding good writing and attacking a good role,” and her acting credits reflect that philosophy. A familiar face on episodic television programs such as “The Good Wife,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and “Brockmire,” Peet has also racked up an impressive list of screen credits in such films as “Syriana,” “The X Files: I Want to Believe,” “The Whole Nine Yards,” and “Something’s Gotta Give”. Twice named as one of the sexiest women in the world, Peet is far from just another pretty Hollywood face as she has emerged as a gifted playwright. The proof of the pudding is in her second theatrical work, “Our Very Own Carlin McCullough,” a fascinating play currently on stage at the Geffen Playhouse.

The story predominantly centers around three characters – Carlin as the 10-year-old tennis protégé, excellently played by Abigail Dylan Harrison, her ambitious mother, Cyn, played by Mamie Gummer, and Jay the tennis coach, played by the most delightful Joe Tippett, whose pure characterization could

stand as an acting lesson on how to develop a character organically with no false layering. While Gummer gives a creditable performance, it would be so much stronger if she eliminated all the quirky character traits including her constant tics and grimaces and stripped down her characterization to its pure essence. The days of the Sandy Dennis style of acting are long gone. The other characters include Carlin at 17, well played by Caroline Heffernan, and Salif, a tennis coach effectively performed by Tyee Tilghman.

Carlin easily wins every competitive tennis match and mom quickly becomes aware that her young daughter is a potential tennis champion and makes a deal with coach Jay to take over her training. As in any well-written play, conflict on how to turn this young girl into a champion erupts, with sexual tension building between the two adults. Carlin and her coach immediately bond and a loving, but disciplined relationship, is formed. But, there is conflict between mom and Jay and she constantly interferes offering counter suggestions, one of which will have negative consequences. It becomes a tug of war to see who has greater control over this young girl.

When it comes to disclosures it’s hard to know how far to go.

Yes, I recommend to disclose when in doubt. When explaining conditions, remind yourself that “less is more”. Do you remember someone telling you if you are ever required to do a deposition, to answer “that question” and then stop? Don’t add extra words of explanation, you may only be opening yourself up to 10 more questions and a direction that was never intended. Let’s say the question is “Are there defects to walkways and sidewalks? Please explain”. It would be safe and advisable to point out the sidewalk that is raised and that walkway and garden walk that has cracks saying “cracks are noted in the following areas”. To go further by explain that the cracks were caused by a tree is not smart because you are marking an assumption, which may be proven wrong.

To disclose that during heavy rains water penetrates the garage is advisable, but to say that the water is coming from a poorly graded driveway may not be entirely correct. What if water is also coming from a neighboring property or from a slab that was not property waterproofed?

Let’s suppose you disclose a roof leak near the chimney. Are you sure that is where the leak is or is the water simply coming in from there?

Let’s suppose you believe the problem is caused by a chimney flashing. Are you sure that is the cause? Less is more, make no assumptions. Let’s suppose you fixed the leak and since the repair, it has not rained. Is it fixed? The answer is you don’t know. I would say there was a roof leak with the water dripping in near the chimney, I do not know where the leak originated from. In October 2016 I hired XYZ Roofing Company to repair the leak, work order notice is attached.

XYZ Roofing Company could not guarantee that their repairs would survive future rains. We have

had only minor rains since and have not noticed any leaks since.

Room was entirely painted in November 2016.

Another example is a disclosure saying there is an airport within a mile. This is fine. But now, your neighbor reveals that you complained previously that your plants kept dying and your garden furniture showed traces of jet fuel from presumably jets passing overhead. The jets causing the problem is an assumption, but the fact that your plants and furniture continued to show traces of a sticky oily substance is a fact, and that should be disclosed.

Consider the question, “Have you had any plumbing problems?” Let’s assume you have needed to employ a rooter service on several recent occasions to clear a blockage. It is reasonable to say just that. I would not explain that the reason was a diaper, or even tree roots. Are you absolutely sure what caused the problems? Maybe these things simply aggravated a much more extensive problem. Let’s now suppose the new buyer speaks either with a neighbor or a plumber who proves that you received an estimate to replace the entire sewer line and you chose instead only to do a minimum maintenance. What if a lawyer could prove you knew the entire sewer needed replacement? If you got an estimate to replace the sewer and had knowledge that it needed replacement, you should disclose that and provide the estimate you received. You might state it as such. “In the past 18 months I cleared the sewer line 4 times, currently it appears fine.

This sewer is old and could need replacement at any time. Enclosed is an estimate I received in December 2016”. With this disclosure, you have made it clear to the new buyer.

Take the disclosure process seriously, but don’t freak out. If you’ve left a trail by getting estimates and making comments to a neighbor who could testify to these statements, cover yourself by making a full disclosure.

Uncle Drew will make you feel like you’re 6 years old, watching Saturday morning cartoons. This movie is just plain fun to watch.

Basketball fans will love it, and even if you don’t play or follow basketball, you’ll find it an allegory for life. The movie is engaging, the characters are endearing, the mood is slapstick, the stars are basketball legends, and the editors have created some of the best basketball footage I’ve seen. It’s not easy to give this game a gripping look in a cinematic setting because there is so much going on at once. Here the filmmakers have succeeded.

The story is based on a real tournament, the annual Rucker Classic Street Ball Tournament in Harlem, where basketball greats often show up to challenge the neighborhood’s rising stars of “street ball.” The film has its roots in a digital episodic commercial series by Pepsi starring Cleveland Cavalier great, Kyrie Irving. Irving here reprises his character of “Uncle Drew,” in his first big screen role. You will also get the treat of watching basketball icons Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and Lisa Leslie become great comedians, a more natural transition than you may think. The Make-up team did an outstanding job making these current and retired players look 30-50 years older. The main protagonist of the story is “Dax” played by Lil Rel Howery, a Chicago comic known for his role in the film Get Out, with comedian Nick Kroll as his nemesis.

to compete on his team in the tournament and has one setback after another. He never gives up. In the end, he finds a neighborhood legend, Uncle Drew, now an old man, and talks him into returning to the court. Surprisingly, old Drew still has game. They go on the road to recruit the aging members of his old squad, played by O’Neal, Webber, Miller and Robinson. Yes, these “old geezers” can actually play.

In one scene, Uncle Drew reminds “Preacher” (Chris Weber) that they have no more time outs. Avid basketball fans will recognize this as a reference to a real NCAA game where Webber called a time-out for his Michigan team, when the team had already used all their time-outs, and it cost them the game. It’s a great chance for Webber to laugh at his own mistake.

If you love basketball, this may be one of your favorite movies of the summer. Even if you’ve never watched basketball, it will be great entertainment. Sports games are a standin for real life, for confronting and solving troublesome situations and problems without starting a war – disappointments, losses, accidents, unexpected barriers, facing bullies, challenges, age-ism, and the list goes on.

Definitely take your kids, grandkids or the kids next door, as there are many teachable moments. The cast and crew obviously had a fantastic experience making this movie and their mood is contagious.

magical oasis,” Pineiro said.

Pineiro said the restaurant’s patio is also a great place to make friends, especially at the communal table.

“Dining outside is just an experience that makes everybody feel like they’re at home,” he said. “We get a lot of people that just connect outside. If they haven’t met, it just sets the stage for everybody to feel welcome and feel like they’re all dining together, but also in their own individual experience at the same time.”

Dinner Under the Stars A summer brunch special of rosé and toast, plus a patio with a retractable roof, make the outdoor dining experience at Baltaire Restaurant in Brentwood perfect for any weather, said Brandon Guidry, the restaurant’s general manager.

“The terrace itself has these lovely, dim, glowing light fixtures and candle features on the table,” he said. “The ambience out there is just absolutely perfect.”

The restaurant’s outdoor seating, which includes a lounge area with a fireplace, is covered by a retractable canopy roof that can be pulled over the patio or brought in, depending on the weather.

“If it’s lovely and warm, we can open it,” Guidry said. “If it’s too bright, too breezy, looks like it’s going to rain, we can close it.”

Guidry said the roof can filter partial sunlight during the day while keeping the heat from beating down on guests. On warm summer nights, he said the roof opens so guests can dine under the night sky.

“The people who dine in that area get the true dining al fresco experience of having their dinner under the stars,” he said.

Last Saturday marked the beginning of the restaurant’s “A Toast to Rosé” summer brunch special, where customers can order from a menu of four appetizer toasts, which the restaurant’s beverage director has paired with four rosé wines from around the world.

The special, which first began last year, will be available every weekend for the rest of the summer.

Guidry said the toasts and rosé wines are perfect to enjoy on the patio.

“To have that experience of eating a lighter fare like the toasts, having the rosés which are great for warm weather, and the ambience of the patio would just be a fantastic combination,” Guidry said.

A Classic That’s Always Fresh This summer at the restaurant Wilshire in Santa Monica, guests can enjoy a diverse summer menu on one of the restaurant’s two outdoor patios, said co-general manager and events manager Eryn Bradley.

Complete with fire torches, a fireplace and a fish pond, the outdoor seating at Wilshire is a staple of the restaurant.

“Outdoor seating is probably 65 to 70 percent of our restaurant, and it’s certainly the most in demand area of the restaurant, as a far as diners are concerned,” Bradley said. “If you look in our reservation books, you’ll see every single person has requested outside seating.”

The outdoor seating also includes a loft space called the Sea Garden Lounge that overlooks the lower patio.

Bradley said the patios at Wilshire are a favorite for locals.

“We have guests who’ve been coming here for 13 years that have their particular table and who come here specifically because they can sit outside and enjoy our beautiful patio,” she said.

Bradley said patrons can always count on Wilshire to have a variety of menu options, as

General Manager John Lindquist runs the day to day operations at Tam O’Shanter, which honors its indelible place in L.A. history. “You step into our restaurant, and you take a step back in time,” Lindquist explains. “We’ve got

We have it here for our guests to enjoy and learn a little bit about if they’re not already familiar.”

Every night we get people coming up with their dogs or coming up to share a cocktail with their friends. they switch out items on their menu on an almost weekly basis to include the freshest ingredients from the nearest farms.

“If you want to have a true summer dining experience, not only will it start with the beautiful aesthetic of the patio, but it will end with the menu that is catered to and based on seasonal summer ingredients,” she said.

Wilshire will offer a new cocktail menu of summer beverages this week as well as live acoustic music on the patio every Sunday brunch.

“Our Sunday brunch is really becoming something special, and it’s large part due to that outdoor patio area,” Bradley said. “It’s a great place for an outdoor patio brunch.”

Carbs That Are Healthy For You With Barbara Bishop

I’ve been strongly encouraged – more like ordered – to eat more veggies by my doctor. Since I haven’t been much of a veggie eater my whole life, I conducted some research on line to match what I liked with high nutritional value. All vegetables have carbs, but some offer other nutrients that will help keep you at your healthiest.

Here are some of my faves. If I can like them, you will love them!

Broccoli – You don’t have to boil this into mush. Try roasting this veggie with a bit of olive oil and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. The oil and cheese bring out a nutty flavor when added to the Broccoli. One serving (one cup) has 6 grams of carbs.

Carrots – If cooked, soggy carrots don’t appeal to you (they don’t make me want to rush home to eat a carrot) leave them crunchy and raw. Cut a whole carrot into chip-like pieces and dip the carrot into a protein rich dip made from no fat yogurt, lemon juice and dill. It’s almost like eating a bag of Lays Crinkle-Cut Potato Chips. Well ok, almost. But, at 12 grams of carbs a cup, it’s a whole lot healthier than those greasy fat-laden potato chips. (Sorry Lays! No disrespect.)

Corn – At 30 grams of carbs per ear, corn is the Big Poppy of carbs. But, corn also contains around 4 grams of fiber, which helps your body absorb those carbs more slowly. It’s hard to beat fresh corn from the grill in the summertime. For fat savings, use lime instead of butter. Divine!

Sweet Potatoes – At 27 grams of carbs, this starchy veggie is high in fiber. It’s also loaded with other nutrients like potassium, calcium and vitamin C. Slice it thin and bake it under

the broiler with a light brushing of olive oil that when fully cooked, combines chew, crunch and tastes yummy. Eat them as healthy substitutes for French fries. See ya, McDonalds...

At the low end of the carb spectrum, but just as delicious as its higher carb counterparts, is red bell pepper. Coming in at only 9 grams of carbs per peppers, I grill them or include them in stir fry. They are sweet and savory and delicious.

MAKE YOUR SUMMER SWEETER WITH FRESH CHERRY RECIPES CHERRY LAVENDER SPRITZER Servings: 6 4 2 3 2 6 6

cups pitted and halved Northwest sweet cherries cups water tablespoons lavender tablespoons sugar Northwest sweet cherries with stems sprigs lavender blossoms

In small saucepan, combine cherries, water, lavender and sugar. Heat mixture until it begins to boil. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool completely. Strain and reserve liquid.

For each drink, combine 4 ounces cherry-lavender mixture and 4 ounces crushed ice in tall 12-ounce cocktail glass; top each with club soda. Garnish each drink with one cherry with stem and one sprig lavender blossoms.

Variation: To make alcoholic version, shake or stir strained cherry-lavender mixture and ice with 9 ounces vodka. Strain into 8-ounce martini glasses, top each with club soda and garnish each with one cherry with stem and one sprig lavender blossoms.

ROASTED CHERRY SAUCE Makes: 1 cup

2 cups pitted Northwest sweet cherries 2/3 cup sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper Heat oven to 400 F. On foil-lined baking sheet, combine cherries, sugar, cornstarch, salt and black pepper; toss to mix.

Place in oven and roast until cherries start to release juices and become soft, about 10 minutes. Cool before serving.

Summer and cherries seem to go hand-in-hand, and using fresh fruits can help boost seasonal food and drink recipes.

A Summer Worth Noticing!

Less thinking and more observing to get the most out of your summer.

Summer 2018 is in full swing! Are you savoring the longer days, basking in the light and water? Will you use the added evening light, the warmth and the extra hours to take it all in and maybe even create a work of art?

Streets are busy with bikes, skateboards, pedestrians, cars and this summer there are flocks of Bird and Lime scooters everywhere. Locals and tourists alike are zipping along on the roads and sometimes even on the sidewalks (not cool). If you look around you might spot an occasional Bird hanging in a tree, over a fence or maybe even in a dumpster. You gotta love Venice, right?

What will make this summer stand out from past summers?

One thing that will heighten your summer is to “notice more and think less.”

This is where conversations start, ideas are formed and new relationships can spark.

A day filled with more noticing and less meaning (a mind is a meaning-making ma-

chine) allows for a more profound sense of belonging to the world.

Keep in mind that even though noticing is free the mind will still insist on making some meaning out of the experience. This chatter may cost you something if it breaks up the intimacy of the moment. However, the more present you are, the easier it is to decipher what is chatter and what is not.

What’s informing you this summer?

At my acting studio, I will pose this question to the actors, writers and directors from time to time. One reason I ask this question is that I literally want to hear what informs them (art, music, theater, sport, cooking, painting, writing, etc.). The other reason is to confirm that we are on the right path to meet their creative needs and wants.

Once you start tracking what informs you, a heightened sense of awareness will stimulate your mind, engage your curiosity and increase the joy factor in your life.

To keep it light this summer, here are three things you can always notice to ground you in the moment and open the channels to what informs you. This is especially helpful when you aren’t sure whether to react or respond to the moment you are in.

1. Notice what is happening outside of you.

2. Pay attention to the sensations you notice in your body.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus will have to radically revise their spending list for the near future. In your life there will be a new expense which you did not even expect. You will have to take care of the elder member of your family, which will be both troublesome and quite costly.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Today will bring a lot of trouble to Geminis. In the morning, and a couple of hours in the afternoon, you will be helping one of your colleagues (a colleague with whom you communicate fairly close). Then, you will return to your personal affairs.

CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers will spend today making plans for a future vacation. In this plan, you include everything, except for one important detail. You will forget to ask your spouse whether they like this idea and the hotel that you have found.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos today have much to change in a relationship with their best friend.
