SM Homeless Statue Intended to Confront Public “In The Image” by Ed Massey on display at former Savings and Loans building

By S am C atanzaro A seven-foot-tall sculpture of a homeless man at the former Savings and Loans building in Santa Monica asks the public to “contemplate their views and elevate their discourse on the issue,” of homelessness says the artist, who has a history of generating buzz in Santa Monica through art.

The statue, titled “In The Image”, sculpted by Ed Massey, is of a bearded homeless man wearing baggy clothes with a red blanket draped on his shoulders, depicting a man the artist came across 20 years ago.

“Good people — progressive to conservative, secular to religious — are confronted by the issue everyday…Yet, few know the stories of the homeless with whom we come in contact. What don’t we know

of those we pass without a glance? What could be their potential contributions?

What does the sculpture evoke or say about us?” Reads a part of the description. “The ‘In the Image’ work was always intended for the public realm, so viewers and passersby could contemplate their views and elevate their discourse on the issue — one that has now come to affect us all where we work and live.”

For 50 years, the property, located at Wilshire Boulevard and 26th Street, was home to the historic Millard Sheets “Pleasures Along the Beach” glass mosaic. Earlier this year, however, the mosaic was moved to the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in the City of Orange, despite its landmark designation.

“The loss is the result of the City’s settlement of a lawsuit brought against it by the property owner, reversing the landmark designation in 2013 as well as the Santa Monica Conservancy’s appeal to City Council, which once again confirmed the designation in 2017,” said the Santa Moni-

SM 3rd Most Expensive Place to Buy a Home in U.S. 90402 zip code has a median home price of over $4M.

By S am C atanzaro It is no secret that real estate in Santa Monica is pricey and according to a recent survey Santa Monica’s 90402 zip code is the third most expensive place to buy a home in the United States.

On Monday, November 18 PropertyShark released a survey of the 100 priciest zip codes in the United States. Los Angeles

County contained 21 zip codes to make the top-100 with one zip in Santa Monica being ranked the most expensive in the

county. According to the list, Santa Monica’s 90402 zip code has a median home sale price of $4.15 million, behind Atherton, CA ($7.05) and Sagaponack, NY ($4.3 million) and ahead of Beverly Hills ($4.08 millon).

In addition, Santa Monica’s 90405 zip code was ranked the 77th most expensive place to buy a house with a median sale price of $1.55 million.

To determine which were the most expensive ZIP codes in the country, PropertyShark looked at all residential transactions closed between January 1, 2019 and November 5, 2019 taking into account condo, co-ops, single- and two-family homes.

In a similar survey released over the summer by Apartment Guide, Santa Monica was ranked the fifth most expensive place in the country to rent a one-bedroom apartment in.

The average price for a one-bedroom apartment in Santa Monica, according to the survey, is $3,786, 187 percent above the national average.

Santa Monica was also ranked sixth in the nation when it comes to the price of renting both two-bedroom and studio apartments, respectively.

Last weekend a driver under the influence of alcohol killed an elderly pedestrian in Downtown Santa Monica walking on a crosswalk.

According to Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias, on November 17, 2019 at around 12:50 a.m., a vehicle struck an elderly pedestrian in a marked crosswalk in the intersection of 5th Street and Arizona Avenue.

“The driver of the vehicle failed to stop at the red light when he struck the pedestrian. The driver fled the scene prior to officers arriving. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries,” Cobarrubias said.

Witnesses provided officers with detailed information about the vehicle. Additional radio calls were received by the SMPD regarding another collision in the area of Lincoln Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard possibly involving the suspect’s vehicle.

“Officers arrived and found the vehicle but not the driver. A search of the area was conducted and the driver of the vehicle was located and detained.

Earlier this week a suspicious device was found on Wilshire Boulevard, forcing authorities to call in a bomb squad unit and implement street closures in the area.

Now the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has announced what the device was.

The device was found on the 1900 block of Wilshire Boulevard near the Walgreens late afternoon Tuesday during rush hour and street closures caused heavy congestion in the area with police rerouting traffic. At 5:15 p.m., the SMPD deemed that the device posed no threat to public safety.

According to SMPD Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias, the device ended up being some batteries wrapped in electrical tape and that the Department does not know the motive behind why the device was left in public.

"We have no idea who left it and were unable to determine why they did it. In something like this, we take a picture of

The driver, Rogelio Bobadilla age 28, was arrested, transported to the Santa Monica Jail and booked on 23152(A) and (B) – Driving under the influence of alcohol and with a BAC of .08% or greater, 20002(A) VC – Hit and Run, 20001(A) VC – Hit and Run with Injury or Death and 191.5(A) PC – Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated. He is being held on $100,000 bail. The SMPD Traffic Collision investigator will be presenting the case to the Los Angeles District Attorney for filing.

This the fourth time this year and the third time in recent months that a suspicious package has been found in Santa Monica. On February 28 a suspicious package was found near a house 2400 block of Arizona Avenue, just blocks away from where Tuesday's incident occurred. On September 16 a pressure-cooker-like object was spotted in a trash container in front of the Urban Outfitters on the Third Street Promenade, closing down a portion of the shopping destination for several hours. On September 22 a suspicious package was found near the area of 4th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow

When a ship with full sails approaches a coastline in a dense fog, you can often hear the waves crashing on the rocks ahead of you, but when you can finally see them, it’s already too late.

Two weeks ago the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), a misguided organization of blind sea captains issued its latest navigational chart for our region’s future.

In it they called for Santa Monica to build 9059 new units or about a 20 percent increase in population in the next 8 years (2021-2019). Any realistic person understands that no amount of upzoning, height increases, density bonuses, or expedited permitting will reach that goal, since our already built out City has, with great effort and public cost, “only” built a respectable 2192 units (about 1/4 were low income) in the last 8 years (during which time SCAG required “only” 1674 units to be built).

SCAG has been issuing these bogus housing goals every 8 years for the last approximately 40 years, all with the predictable result that many cities rightfully ignore them because they do not agree with their goals, do not feel there is a fair share allocation of the desired housing’s burdens, resent the removal of local control and because the goals in the past had no effective enforcement or reward mechanism: all complaints that are still valid today.

The real problem is, of course, that even if Cities and Counties had followed SCAG’s questionable goals faithfully in the past, we would still not have reached regional urban success. For example, Santa Monica, which has substantially exceeded SCAG’s goals, is still essentially unaffordable to most of its residents, still has its jobs-housing balance out of whack,

is still running out of water, and is still in a transit mess with plummeting Blue Bus ridership and residents stuck in horrific traffic jams while scooter riders daily take their lives in their own hands. Piling on more housing will not solve any of these interlocked problems.

So, awash in a sea of lies (our population needs to grow-while it has essentially flatlined over the last 3 years; high-density construction makes housing more affordable- it doesn’t; housing at transit hubs reduces traffic- it won’t) the State has this year myopically decided to weaponize the unbelievable SCAG numbers and start taking away state funds from Cities and Counties that can’t or won’t meet the imaginary SCAG numbers. So while cities were “free” to ignore SCAG in the past, there is now a substantial penalty so that these delusional numbers can no longer be ignored.

Cities and Counties need to challenge both the methods of our opponent, Sacramento and SCAG, and their motives. Their methodology is easily challenged as it is a hopeless mishmash of vague terms such as “unit”, “transit-rich”, “jobrich”, “social equity goals”, When you test their methodology you immediately see their inherent lack of credibility, their dirty data and their arbitrary fudge factors. Santa Monica, for example, has been assigned 1/3 more units per population than Beverly Hills (a traditional SCAG scofflaw) which is equally job and transit rich. While some Cities will be forced to take more than their fair share of housing, other cities for mysterious reasons will somehow get off scot-free. These inequities will keep lawyers busy for years.

The motives of SCAG are surprisingly constant in our evolving world. No matter that we have long since passed the plausibility and desirability of infinite growth, SCAG’s solution in 4 decades has always been exactly the same: build more and More and MORE; Thereby, surprise surprise, always meeting the needs of the financial, real estate and construction industries instead of our region.

The other more serious battle is the simple unattainability of SCAG’s goals. SCAG requires

from page 4 that Santa Monica magically produce about 4500 low or very low income units with no visible funding source. Since the private sector simply cannot build affordable units profitably, this becomes at least a $2.2 billion public obligation or about 3 years worth of the City’s entire budget. In addition with current technology no building over 3 stories can be net zero (produces as much energy as it consumes) as required by the upcoming State codes. Santa Monica also wants and needs to be water neutral in a few years which will be impossible with a 20% population increase. In other words SCAG goals, instead of producing a green region, directly militate against achieving such an urgently needed necessity. Finally SCAG is stuck in the old obsolete model of moving housing to jobs instead of vice versa. So SCAG goals have sent, now with Sacramento’s enforcement, cities on a fools errand of an unfunded mandate, causing worsening global warming based on a retrograde development model. In other words the SCAG numbers are wish full thinking that need a reality check before we crash into the very real rocks of the limits to growth.

Its time for Cities and Counties to revolt and take back local control and if necessary collectively sue the State and SCAG for their deficient planning, arrogant overreach and failure to chart a real and safe path forward for our City, Region and State.

Its time for our City council to grab back the tiller and steer our City to where we know it needs to go. There’s no time left for

Andy Garcia Stars in “Key Largo” CENTER STAGE

The first time I saw Andy Garcia was in the Untouchables. I was mesmerized by his acting and powerful on-screen presence. I made a note to myself that he was a young actor destined to become a major movie star and, indeed, he has.

With dozens of movie credits going back to 1984, there are too many to list but here are a few of my favorites: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Book Club, Kill the Messenger, Rob The Mob, At Middleton, City Island, Ocean’s Twelve( and Thirteen,) Smokin’Aces, When a Man Loves a Woman, The Godfather, Part III, and Internal Affairs. So, it was with great anticipation that I was going to cover Jeffrey Hatcher and Garcia’s adaption of the 1948 film noir version of Key Largo starring the incomparable team of Hum-

phrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, as well as super bad guy, Edward G. Robinson. It was directed by John Huston, who changed the original story of Maxwell Anderson’s 1939 play, which centered around the Spanish Civil War. Presented by the Geffen Playhouse, Warner Brothers Theatre Ventures, in association with Frank Mancuso, and Andy Garcia, there is nothing overtly wrong with the play. The casting is excellent, beginning with Garcia in the lead role of Johnny Rocco, a bad guy who was deported to Italy for a year and a day, but sneaked back to America via Cuba and was now running a drug cartel. As a real estate professional with over 30 years of experience and as a top agent in the country, you would think I’ve got it down to a science. That might be very possible if I was dealing with computers, robots or machines, but when dealing with people, emotions, memories, resentment, jealousy, anger, sadness, denial, control issues, power, regret and expectations can easily be the wild card that is least predictable.

It might be very easy to jump to a conclusion that the adult children, selling a recently inherited property and holding out for top dollar are ridiculously greedy, especially thinking the proceeds of the sale are a pure, non taxable gift which comes without any effort. I consider this conclusion to be pure ignorance.

Although that may look to be the case on the surface, such a conclusion is so knee-jerk, under researched and short sided.

Imagine as was a recent case I handled, it was the family home inherited by 3 sisters and a brother. Here are the facts behind what is seen on the surface. The home was purchased in 1959 by the hard-working immigrant parents who struggled and sacrificed to put together a minimal down payment while the seller gave them a high interest rate, second trust deed which they paid off after 3 years. The children each came along a year apart. Both mom and dad worked two jobs, each just to make ends meet. The parents continued to sacrifice for years, forgoing vacations and dinners to send all four children to college teaching all of them the importance of family, core values, integrity and a good education.

Most of all they taught by example, teaching the importance of love, caring and being there for one another. Later, grandchildren came along, and the home became “the rock” for family dinners, Thanksgiving and even two wedding receptions. The grandchildren know this place to be Nana’s and Grandpa’s home where there was always holiday festivities, love, laughter, great home-cooked meals and good spirit.

As the grandparents grew old, first grandpa became ill and always with a positive attitude and good spirit passed away four years ago. Then several months ago grandma passed away after first being cared for by two of the local children on a daily basis for nearly two years, while her incurable illness sadly progressed. It was the grandparent’s wish to have the home stay in the family, but by now each of the children had their own homes and none of them were really interested in becoming a landlord. After much debate, prayer and consideration, a decision was made to sell the home.

Making the decision took nearly three months, and even then, there were feelings of uncertainty and concerns about the parent’s wishes. Would mom and dad be disappointed? Would they wish we kept the house for one of the grandkids? Which grandchild should we

keep the house for? How would the other grandchildren feel?

So now the real reason I wrote this story.

The escrow has now closed and transaction was a success, but not without much emotional tension and a very very significant price negotiation. When the cooperating agent became pushy and borderline condescending, implying that the seller was greedy and being intentionally inconsistent to the offer agreement deadlines and timelines imposed by the buyer, I reminded the agent to be professional and open-minded in his conclusions of the sellers and the overall sequences of the negotiating process as seen through his very basic considerations of fact, minus emotions.

This is truly an example of human behavior and the importance of totally understanding a family that has much reason to be respectful and considerate to the foundation of their existence, and roots from where their families all began. It is easy to forget and often difficult to explain but separating market value from emotional value is important. Emotional value usually outweighs market value. This can impact the ability to find a willing buyer unless the buyer can develop an emotional understanding and have a high enough level of motivation. Similarly, some people will use their money to preserve or protect a threatened habitat for emotional reasons that have nothing to do with economic value, and will outbid buyers who want to develop the same land for profit. Sometimes letting go of what one is attached too is just too emotionally costly to justify.

I hope when you are a buyer you will look far beyond what you may define as greed, understanding the emotions of letting go and answering to the ghost voices of a deceased family member, and when you are a seller, that you will hire a real estate professional who will support your emotions, your actions and your ultimate decisions.

ty’s sprawling, incredibly detailed period set of the hotel lobby, which was perfect for the ensuing unfolding drama. The hotel is closed for the winter and is occupied by caretakers blind Mr. D’Alcala (Tony Plana) and his widowed daughter-in-law, Nora D’Alcala (Rose McIver). While a full-blown hurricane is brewing, the hotel has been taken over by Rocco and his gang.

Curly (Louis Mustillo) and Toots (Stephen Borrello) are the boss’s henchman who keep Nora and Mr. D’Alcala at bay. Also present, is Gaye Dawn, Rocco’s girlfriend exquisitely played by Joely Fisher. Gaye is a former entertainer but has turned into lush and is treated very poorly by Rocco. She gives one of the best, heart breaking performances of the evening when Rocco forces her to sing for a drink that she desperately needs.

Rounding out the cast is the very talented Danny Pino as the troubled, brooding Frank McCloud who was a captain during World War II and has been traveling around the country to talk to parents of soldiers killed in combat. Mr. D’Alcala’s son served under McCloud’s command but made a decision to counter his captain’s orders, which had tragic results. We don’t exactly know what’s wrong with McCloud as Pino keeps that sub-text well under wraps. Now, what would a town be like without a sheriff? Well, Richard Riehle does an okay job as the corrupt Sheriff Gash who has no compunctions about taking a bribe here and there. Finally there’s the character of Ziggy, well played by Bradley Snedeker, who brings a bit of much needed levity to the proceedings. This snappy, handsome dude is a drug dealer who drives down to Key Largo during the raging hurricane for a drug buy from Rocco.

from page 6 just say there’s an unexpected twist to the quarter-of-a-million dollar cocaine transaction.

There are confrontations between McCloud and Rocco, which included pistols and an undeveloped relationship between McCloud and Nora to whom Rocco has taken a fancy. Rocco, with all his bluster, is actually afraid of thunder, which could tarnish his tough-guy image just a bit, and makes him human instead of a cliché characterization of an Italian gangster. Mahem ensues and there’s lots of unconvincing shooting.

All this action takes place during an increase in the hurricane’s ferocity, beautifully replicated by Alex Hawthorn’s thunderous sound effects, including the sound of a buoy being tossed around in the water or hearing thunder or seeing the pouring rain through a window and the skylight.

Peter Kaczorowski’s lighting design, and Linda Cho’s costumes, especially those nifty suits in which she dressed Garcia, are both outstanding.

Rounding out the excellent production values are Kaitlyn Pietras and Jason H. Thompson’s projection designs, and Arturo Sandoval’s music, all working together for a satisfying audio-visual experience.

Again, there is nothing terribly wrong with this production. All the technical elements are outstanding, as well as a highly professional cast, but Doug Hughes’ direction left a number of dead spots both in some of the stagnant blocking and uneven pacing. There are no particularly strong highs or lows but all this said, seeing Andy Garcia, Danny Pino, and Joely Fisher deliver strong performances makes this re-imagined production

Trader Joe’s Opens Across from Whole Foods Another healthconscious grocer comes to Wilshire Boulevard

By S am C atanzaro Last Saturday Santa Monica got its second Trader Joe’s, across the street from a Whole Foods and just blocks away from another health-conscious grocer, Erewhon market.

Located at 2300 Wilshire Boulevard, the new Trader Joe’s operates daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and offers validated, underground parking with an entrance 23rd Street. To the south of the property on 23rd and 22nd streets are primarily multi-family residential homes.

The market is located on the ground floor of a three-story building mixed-use complex that recently opened with 30-units.

There is also commercial space available for an additional business.

The site was previously developed with a full-service car wash facility between 1960-1970.

Santa Monica’s original is at Trader Joe’s at Pico Boulevard and 32nd Street. There are also three other Trader Joe’s on the Westside, including 11755 Olympic Boulevard, 3456 Sepulveda Boulevard and 1000

“I don’t know when it happened or when

people gave up the right to quite homes in this city but I live 15 feet from this property,” said resident Mary Ann Solomon. “Deliveries are not a quiet operation.”

According to Dan Kramer, outside counsel for Trader Joe’s speaking at the April 17, 2019, Planning Commission meeting, to address concerns about the loading and alley use, loading docks will be located on 23rd street, not in the alley.

The Trader Joe’s will also have a permit to sell alcohol. Even though no onsite tasting is permitted Kelly Olsen, former chair of the Santa Monica Planning Commission, expressed concerns about overconcentration over available alcohol in the area at the April 17 meeting.

“Santa Monica has the highest intensification of alcohol outlets of 88 cities in Los Angeles County,” Olsen said. “If you take six blocks to the west and six blocks to the east of this establishment, there are 25 alcohol outlets you can buy off sale or go in and have a drink at a bar or restaurant. This is a heavily concentrated area.”

In 2001, Santa Monica’s Planning Commission denied Trader Joe’s plan to move into a former Goodyear Tire store on Wilshire Boulevard. At the time, the Commission wanted Trader Joe’s to double the number of on-site parking or go through a long process to get approval from the Commission.

In an online thread, Twitter account Santa Monica Problems (@SantaMonicaProb) took aim at city officials for allowing the statue to be erected.

“Only in [Santa Monica] would a statue of a family be replaced [with a] statue of a homeless man. Why not honor a resident, rather than glorify homelessness?” reads the Tweet. “[Santa Monica’s] homeless situation is nothing to be proud of.”

Santa Monica City Councilmember Ted Winterer, however, wrote in a reply to the tweet that the City has no authority over the statue’s subject matter citing the owner’s First Amendment rights.

“You realize it’s private property right?

The owner made the decision to remove the mural and previous sculpture and replace it with the new one, not the city. Can’t stop the owner from exercising her/his First Amendment rights,” Winterer wrote.

The installation will be on display for six weeks.

This is not the first time artist Ed Massey has generated buzz in Santa Monica. In 1994, as part of a five-city exhibition, Massey along with feminist activist Peg Yorkin installed life-size painted-polyurethane foam figures depicting the grisly aftermath of a sexual assault titled “Morality/Mortality” in a storefront window at the Wilshire Medical Building at Wilshire

“It would have been a lot easier to show the piece in a third-floor gallery in Manhattan,” Massey told the LA Times at the time. “But this has to be in a public area.

Time For Realistic Housing Goals TOM ELIAS Mirror Columnist

Build 3.5 million new dwelling units across California by 2025 and this state’s housing shortage will be solved, Gov. Gavin Newsom prescribed during his campaign last year and many times since.

But it’s not happening, and the problems of affordability and homelessness have grown no easier to solve under Newsom than before his election, despite many months of talk and a slew of new laws designed to make permitting and building new units easier and less bureaucratic.

If there’s a culprit here, it appears to be market forces. For years, the common nostrum was that easier permitting and lower prices could solve the problems, which see more than 130,000 homeless persons around the state and many more who can’t afford the American dream of owning their homes, which in California has been a path to wealth for generations.

It appears not even a drastic measure like this year’s proposed (and later scrubbed) SB 50 can do the trick. The measure aims to mandate highrise housing in job and transit centers and near the

busiest bus lines regardless of what neighbors or local officials desire.

SB 50’s likely failure was implied last spring, when the Irvine-based real estate information firm MetroStudy reported that 3,700 newly-built homes went unsold in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties during the first quarter of this year.

That left unsold housing inventory up 22 percent from last year and 37 percent above the fiveyear average. It caused a slowdown in construction at the very time Newsom and others wanted more building, with new home development in the state’s most populous region down 18 percent year over year.

That reduction in housing sales and construction would hardly get California 3.5 million new units in the next six years. It might generate onesixth that many, at best.

This was market forces at work: Even though builders dropped the price of new housing below the regional median price, they could not drop it below the $425,000 average cost of building an apartment or condominium in a typical 100-unit project. Instead, most new units must be sold for about $600,000 in order to push the price of “affordable” new units in each development down to $350,000 or less.

make any profit, a prerequisite if anyone expects them to build anything. But at those prices, there aren’t enough buyers to sustain the kind of building boom California needs.

That was the Southern California situation, and things were similar in the Central Valley, where prices are significantly lower – but so are average incomes.

ment leader thanks to Silicon Valley. That area’s sustained success has driven up the average cost of Bay area housing.

The steady upward drive of housing prices in the region began to flag earlier this year, with prices stabilizing at least for while. That now has developers in the entire region leery of building very much, according to a new study of Califor-

By Staff Writer With the first significant rainfall of the season in the books, authorities are warning beachgoers about elevated levels of bacteria in the ocean, which may come as a dismay to some surfers with a solid swell sending wavest to the region.

"During [an] LA rain storm runoff from our sidewalks and roadways washes into our storm drain system and flushes out to sea.

In Los Angeles County alone, there are 70+ major outfalls that spew trash, animal waste, pesticides, automotive fluids and human-gastrointestinal viruses into local bodies of water," Heal the Bay said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Beachgoers are advised to wait at least 72 hours before entering the water after rainfall, the time it takes for bacteria and other pollutants to dilute back down to safe concentrations. Contributing factors like water flow and currents impact how quickly beaches recover from pollutants in the water.

nose infections; and gastrointestinal symptoms are some of the more common yet minor afflictions that can be picked up by surfing or swimming in the ocean after it rains. And there’s worse with MRSA, Vibrio and other life-threatening diseases that are possible to contract if exposed to human sewage in recreational waters," said Katie Day, Staff Scientist for the Surfrider Foundation in an interview with Palisades News earlier this year.

“Beaches near river and stormwater outfalls experience more severe stormwater pollution, as these areas border the immediate discharge areas for debris and pollution swept in from urban areas."

Instead, there was some sleepy looking dude at my dining table, working on his laptop. He barely looked up. When I asked about him the number of bedrooms in the house, he got it wrong. When I asked him where my agent was, his cellphone rang and he held up one finger, for me to wait.

My question is simple. How do I fire my agent?

Hi David, It’s good news that you’re asking “how”. The fact of the matter is that you probably signed a 90 day or more listing agreement. And there probably isn’t a “dump” clause in there that allows you to part ways at will. You’ll find plenty of “gross” clauses, gross malfeasance, gross dishonesty, etc.

This all means that you could sue. But the listing would have expired by the time you got any results, the listing will have expired.

The good news? Many agents and brokerages will cancel your agreement just to keep good will.

But maybe the better thing (they call it “win

win”) is to talk to your agent. He clearly hired the wrong showing assistant to sit your open. But he may be doing other things exceptionally well.

Don’t be afraid to insist he “show and tell.”

If they don’t listen… well, let’s hope that you signed a reasonably short listing agreement.

FILM REVIEW: “Ford v. Ferrari”

By Kathryn Whitney Boole I have to admit that I’m a biased viewer of “Ford v Ferrari”. Although I’ve never been a fan of watching car races (boring), I have often raced cars in my dreams. I love the feeling of moving oneself at speeds that can only be reached with the help of engineered machinery. When I was 21 I saved up and bought a used British sports car, a Sunbeam Alpine. I loved that car. To me, this movie is a 2½-hour thrill ride behind the wheel of a powerful sports car. The racing scenes are extraordinary - you actually feel yourself gripping the wheel, moving the gears at just the right split second to get maximum speed, and the beautiful exhilaration of flying smoothly through space as if picked up by a gust of wind. In this movie, as director James Mangold states, “The cars were their own characters.”

Matt Damon shines as legendary driver/ designer Carroll Shelby. Racer Dan Gurney’s youngest son, Alex Gurney, portrays his own Dad. The real Lee Iacocca, who unfortunately passed away a few months before the release of this film at the age of 94, is played by Jon Bernthal. Caitriona Balfe

She is able to provide just the right touchstone for her unpredictable, wild husband.

ny ability to feel the balance that exists between driver, machine and speed. The story stays true to real details of Miles’ later life.

He was born in Birmingham England just after World War I, raced motorcycles as a young man and drove a tank in World War II. In the mid 1950’s he moved to the US to develop racecars and enter races himself.

Incidentally he developed a racecar in the early 1960’s called the Sunbeam Tiger. My Sunbeam Alpine was a lower priced version of that car, which the British Rootes Group bought from Miles.

What you will take away from this film is Bale’s performance. This extraordinary actor captures the manic energy and razor sharp intelligence and intuition of this working class Brit who came to America to pursue his love of racing cars. Bale had to lose seventy pounds from his role as Dick Cheney in “Vice”, before filming began.

He also spent six hours a day for a week at Bondurant High Performance Driving School owned by former racer Bob Bondurant. Even Matt Damon was impressed with Bale’s “monk-like” discipline. That focus is something that Bale uses for his character.

The acting, the camera work and the editing on this film are superb. If you’ve ever even driven a car fast, even just to pull away from the rest of the traffic, you will find the experience of watching this film exhilarating. If you’ve ever raced anyone in a car, especially in a sports car, you will relive that thrill.
