By Sam Catanzaro Police prevented an individual from jumping off a parking structure in downtown Santa Monica Sunday morning.

At 11:22 a.m. on Sunday, September 29 the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) posted a tweet saying to avoid the area near the 1400 block of 4th street where a distraught individual was on the roof of Parking Structure 3 located at 1320 4th Street.

By Keldine Hull On October 17, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) board members are expected to discuss

the potential removal of the Muir Woods mural. The future of the mural was originally scheduled for discussion during an October 3 meeting in Malibu.

The Muir Woods mural was painted in 1978 on the walls of the John Muir Elementary School at the corner of Lincoln Boulevard and Ocean Park Boulevard.

The school relocated to another campus in Santa Monica over 20 years ago and eventually became Olympic High School.

At 11: 45 a.m. the SMPD said that officers had resolved the situation.

“The Crisis Negotiations Team is on scene and made contact with a distraught individual on the roof of Structure 3 near Arizona and 4th. The individual is now safe and in police custody,” the SMPD said in a tweet.

This is the fifth time an individual has jumped or attempted to jump off a downtown Santa Monica parking structure in the past year. On August 26 a man died by suicide by jumping off Parking Structure 2. In April 2019, a man died by suicide after jumping from the parking structure at Broadway Avenue and 4th Street Thursday.

September 2018, a man jumped off Parking Structure 4 and in December 2018, a woman died after jumping off the same structure.

Suspected Armed Robber Escapes SM Police Search Man approaches person in car with gun Wednesday night

By Sam Catanzaro After a suspected armed robber approached a person inside a car near in the North of Montana area of Santa Monica Wednesday night a police search ensued with the suspect escaping law enforcement.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2 a male suspect approached a person who was inside their

car near Montana Avenue and 20th Street.

When the victim saw what they believed to be a weapon, they drove off and called the police. The suspect fled the area.

According to SMPD Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias, the suspect had a black handgun with an unknown caliber type.

A manhunt took place searching for the suspect but according to the SMPD, he fled the scene and was not found. According to Cobarrubias, the search area was between 20th Street and 23rd Street and Montana Avenue and Carlyle Avenue.

“It was a relatively large area to search but we went that large because the suspect was mobile in a 4 door sedan,” Cobarrubias said.

Nobody was injured says the SMPD.

By S am C atanzaro For 32 years, Vidiots served as a destination for cinema-lovers from Santa Monica and beyond, a community that was heartbroken when the video store shuttered in 2017 in the wake of rising costs, but now the company has announced that they will reopen with a nearly 10,000 square-foot storefront and independent theater in Eagle Rock set to open in 2020.

A Santa Monica brick-and-mortar film space founded and helmed by women, Vidiots was opened as an alternative video store in 1985 by L.A. natives Patty Polinger and Cathy Tauber, and was seen as a one-ofkind hub for film lovers, filmmakers and everyone curious about cinema. When the store closed in 2017, Vidiots was able to store its collection and devise an extensive plan for a sustainable relaunch in a new home.

Vidiots’ new home will be the 90-year old, restored Eagle Theatre.

With nearly 10,000 square feet of entertainment and educational space, Vidiots will operate seven days a week and offer daily screenings and special programs, a full video store with DVD and BluRay rentals, concessions, plus a light menu with beer and wine. The main theater, which will have over 200 seats, an ample stage, a 35mm projector, DCP and state-of-the-art sound, will provide flexibility for various screenings and tastemaker events. A second, smaller screening and event space (approximately 50 seats with DCP and BluRay projection) will be ideal for screenings,

workshops and receptions.

“Vidiots is coming back and we can’t wait for all of you to be part of it! Thank you to all of our incredible supporters, customers, partners and friends!” Vidiots said in a tweet.

A Westside landmark, Martin Cadillac has been at the intersection of Bundy Drive and Olympic Boulevard for over 40 years but now the car dealer has closed its doors to be replaced by an 807,000 square foot, 10-story, mixed-use project developed by Houston-based Hines.

Last month the City of Los Angeles approved demolition permits for the 4.6-acre lot located at 12101 Olympic Boulevard.

The site currently contains approximately 100,000 square feet of buildings that will be replaced by the Martin Expo Town Center. Plans call for 600 apartments, including 20 percent for workforce and very low-income households, 150,000 square feet of office space, retail at ground level and three levels of subterranean parking.

contained in a seven-story building designed by Togawa Smith Martin.

Construction is anticipated to last three years.

Martin Cadillac, which has re-merged as Cadillac of Beverly Hills at 8767 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, has partnered with Houston-based developer Hines on the new project. According to The Real Deal, Hines paid over $200 million to become a partner on the 807,000-square-foot development.

In 2014 Hines gave up on plans for a 1.1 million-square-foot development at the Pen Factory in Santa Monica less than a mile away from Martin Cadillac after opponents created a ballot measure to repeal the project even though the development had been approved by the Santa Monica City Council.

Times Change but Good Times Keep Rolling

It’s been a wild ride this last decade for Mirror Media Group (MMG). In 2009 it was just the Santa Monica Mirror newspaper with smmirror.com and social media wasn’t even a thought for our company, let alone the industry. In fact, it was considered a big step in 2009 (and a revolutionary move locally) when we started to update our website daily with fresh content…how far it has come in 10 years!

In those 10 years MMG has been able to acquire most local media outlets in the West LA area – totaling six publications and seven digital outlets - all while experimenting with new media and creating the largest local digital audience of any competitor – including the big boys like LA Times or cable TV. One of the things we are the most proud of in our little 10 year history here at Mirror Media Group is leading the way when it comes to local media – not just in the quality of our story telling but that we utilize many mediums to reach as many local residents as possible!

It is no secret that MMG has invested heavily in video from 2009 moving forward – the only difference is that the online video consumption and business model has finally caught up with our investment!

From 2017 – present day MMG has had a

2,500 percent increase in video consumption on our digital network (websites and social media) with minutes watched on our network almost doubling nearly every year. The revenue from this effort has also started to become something worth looking at when considering future moves for the company to ensure we are strong, nimble and well balanced.

The above has also led to another realization – a flawed part of our business model which we have yet to remedy to fit today’s media culture and appetite – which is Free home delivery to every house in the area rather than if a household wants it or not.

Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow

Three weeks ago the Planning Commission approved a 140 unit eight story skyscraper downtown which meets all the requirements of the Downtown Community Plan, but misses several significant City urban goals. This building at 601 Broadway is a forerunner of a large number of similar projects which on paper meet the letter but not the intent of our codes. Editor’s note: 601 Broadway does not exist but 601 Colorado is home to a future project that fits this column’s description.

The Downtown Plan was supposed to incentivize (primarily with bonuses from added density and parking reductions) the construction of multi bedroom apartments for families. If a developer wanted these bonuses by building larger Tier 2 and 3 type projects, not only would they pay extra fees and have to provide among other things more affordable units, but they would also have to meet a specific mix of unit types: 15 percent maximum studios, 20 percent minimum 2 bedroom apartments and 15 percent minimum three bedroom apartments.

This unit mix was supposed to ensure that the downtown with its added density, and enhanced transportation options (Expo Line, Big Blue Bus hub and the 10 Freeway) would be a friendly place for all types of families to settle. The shape of the “family” is appropriately not specified: it could be college roommates, or couples with young children, or multigenerational families, or seniors with a live in caregiver, or people running a home business or art career or any possible combination of that elusive thing we call a family. The important thing was that the downtown would provide housing for the full profile of life from infants to seniors.

Unfortunately, these large upcoming buildings by WS Communities (a progeny of NMS) among other developers, are not really full of multi-bedroom apartments but are a series of very small one bedroom apartments with a shared microscopic kitchen. These one-bedroom apartments have been aggregated into clusters, that by opening selected doors might look like a two or three-bedroom apartment but would actually be unlivable for a family with any sense of shared space. They essentially have no kitchen, dining room or living room big enough for the entire family (however it is defined) to cook, eat or lounge together.

They have a fatal misallocation of space for family life. For example the very small (988 square feet average) three bedroom apartments have three bathrooms. Two of the bathrooms are so small they have to put their sinks outside those bathrooms. Most three bedroom apartment renters would be happy with two bathrooms so that more room could be dedicated to the living spaces. By cramming three one bedroom apartments into the space of a small three bedroom apartment, the bedrooms, shrink to the point that with a queen size bed there is no room for a dresser or desk much less a place to turn around a wheel chair. The analogous discussion would apply to the two bedroom apartments which are however slightly larger proportionally to their bedroom count.

In other words these apartments are for workaholic members of the gig economy who are never home or for wealthy students who are briefly camping out downtown. As soon as they want to throw a birthday party, to live with a lover or spouse, much less to have children, they have to decamp to find a real two or three bedroom apartment. Since these natural life events happen to everyone, what this really means is high turnover for the building owner with more opportunities to raise the rent. So not only does the start-

from page 6 ing rent from three one bedroom apartments exceed the rent from a three bedroom apartment of the same floor area, the churning of roommates means that the rent escalator, will be accelerated even further for a large portion of downtown residents. This is particularly true because NMS/WS owns such a large percentage of the downtown apartments and properties under development that they exercise essentially monopolistic pricing over the whole area. You know these small units will be very expensive.

These units are designed for a college dorm or hotel lifestyle where people accept their straitened circumstances because they know it will be temporary. But their small size makes them unlivable for long term residents, so the stability of the downtown population is decreased by their continual need to find more habitable quarters. Thus downtown becomes a transient hub of not just the homeless but also of the poorly housed by these cramped units. There will be those who will argue that we cannot afford to build real family apartments anymore and people will simply have to learn to live in smaller and more expensive cells.

Perhaps this is true, but we should not accelerate this trend by allowing and approving such deception in the unit mix of these large buildings.

Finally there is one other problem with packing people in this way. The City allows these transit adjacent types of apartments downtown to have significantly reduced parking requirements which for this building totals 95 cars compared to a similar building in the rest of the City which would require 235 cars. This is part of the City’s noble experiment to see if they don’t build the parking spaces, people will magically abandon their cars. The jury is still out on that experiment, but the data is being skewed by such buildings. When you treat this building as what it really is: as 210 one bedroom apartments, just the downtown’s wishful thinking load of 1/2 car per unit totals 105 cars. The actual load using the City’s numbers for the rest

of the City would be a more realistic 315 cars. You have to believe that the real load is somewhere between those two numbers, because the wealthy tenants who can afford these units will also have cars and will need to park them somewhere.There will be a scramble to rent adjacent downtown parking spaces. Its unclear who will benefit from that parking shortage, but it is certain the streets will be in greater gridlock from these types of projects.

The reverse of the famous phase “If we build it, they will come”is also true. If we don’t build real family apartments they won’t come. In this case our downtown will be less than it could be, because we allowed developers to build deceptive unit mixes that made it impossible for families to live there.

There’s been a three month hiatus in the growing phenomenon of anti-Semitism on California’s college and university campuses, but students and former students were nevertheless involved in some of the most blatant and violent of the spring and summer’s hate crimes again Jews.

While on campus, Earnest, a sometime student at Cal State San Marcos, picked up some ideas he later used in a rambling manifesto attempting to justify his offenses. Like anti-Semites on other campuses, those at San Marcos in north San Diego County like to say they don’t hate Jews, but are merely anti-Zionist, meaning they want Jews to be just about the only people on earth not entitled to their own country.

That’s the same tune spouted by the partially terrorist-funded movement called Boycott, Divest and Sanction, which seeks an end to the state of Israel, its adherents often spouting a popular Palestinian nationalist slogan, “From the river to the sea.” That one refers to Palestinians not wanting to control just the lands now known as the West Bank and Gaza, but all of Israel, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. The BDS movement has been strong on some of California’s most prominent campuses, including UCLA, Stanford University, UC Davis, UC Berkeley and San Francisco State.

It spurred faux roadblocks where the campus group Students for Justice in Palestine (partially funded by the Hamas terror organization that controls the unoccupied city of Gaza) stopped Jewish students walking on the Berkeley campus with cardboard fake submachine guns. It caused sympathizers at UCLA to try to deny a

student government seat to a properly elected Jewish woman, claiming no Jew can be fair – an anti-Semitic statement on its face. It inspired smearing Nazi-style swastikas on buildings and walls at Davis and moved a Stanford dormitory resident assistant to threat violence against Israelis and other Jewish students. And it often leads a San Francisco State professor to post BDS material on her school’s official website.

BDS caused an attempt by Pomona College faculty to cancel the school’s exchange program with the University of Haifa, the most diverse college in Israel, with an enrollment almost half Arab, pretty much matching the populace of that picturesque, usually peaceful seaside city. When the campus president vetoed this, the faculty voted to censure him.

It all makes some California campuses among the most hostile to Jewish students, who for the most part are still not intimidated from attending.

falsehoods, like the BDS canard that Israel is an apartheid state, despite the fact it has taken in thousands of black Ethiopian Jews and despite studies by Arab scholars finding Israeli Arabs enjoy more political and economic freedom than their ethnic brethren anywhere else in the Middle East.

A midsummer U.S. Department of Justice conference on anti-Semitism reached five conclusions supporting that prospect. It said campus anti-Semitism is increasing “at an alarming

rate.” It found the most common forms of campus anti-Semitism are Israel-related, denying many Jewish students the “ability to…fully participate in campus life.” It found that faculty are “major contributors to campus anti-Semitism.”

And it said most university presidents and deans “have not afforded Jewish students equal protection to their peers from (threatening) behavior.”

Much of the inaction stems from a lack of understanding of the link between Jews and the homeland that has been part of Jewish rituals and liturgy for more than 2,500 years.

Wrote Jonathan Sacks, the former chief rabbi of the United Kingdom, “Uniquely, Jewish religion and nationhood coincide… Jewishness is not a mere ethnicity, a form of culture. In Israel, Jews are a walking lexicon of almost every ethnicity under the sun, so it’s not ethnicity. Jewish nationhood is a matter of religious vocation…”

Which means that those who say anti-Zionism is not necessarily anti-Semitism don’t get it. But lack of understanding has never deterred anti-Semites. Rather, it often inspires them to greater viciousness and violence.

And there are few signs things will improve on campuses in California or elsewhere in the new academic year.

10 Tips for Urban Gardening

By Staff Writer Westsiders may sometimes think that gardening is only for those who live in suburbs or rural communities, but planting an urban garden can be easy. Whether you are planting a garden for yourself or your family, you can do your part to create a more sustainable and green future.

These simple steps recommended by Arjan Stephens, executive vice president at Nature’s Path Organic Foods, can help you on your way to greening your thumb and the planet: No Space, No Problem: Not everyone has a backyard, roof or balcony. To overcome this issue, start a container garden. While decorative pots can be lovely, they don’t improve the quality of your plants and can be expensive. Instead, you can use a large bucket from a garden store, which is a low-cost and effective option. Or upcycle containers not in use, such as crates, old toys or paint cans.

Plant Selection: There are vegetable, flower and herb varieties that are easy to grow in urban spaces. When planning your garden, think about what to plant – shallow-rooted veggies, such as herbs, lettuce and radishes typically do better in confined spaces.

It Takes a Village: In addition to establishing your own garden, another way to plant is by getting involved with community gardens.

Each year, Nature’s Path Food’s Gardens for Good program supports community gardens that make fresh, organic food more accessible in local neighborhoods. Three $15,000 grants are available to gardens that demonstrate high community support and a viable plan for the urban agriculture project.

Plant Right: Potting your plants takes a few simple steps. Put some gravel in the bottom of your container to help with drainage and fill with soil, tamping it a bit. Leave 1 inch at the top for watering. Tamp the soil after the plants are in place and water gently.

Portable Planters: An advantage of container gardens is that they allow you to easily move them in and out of the sun. If your plants seem to dry out in one window area, you can try different areas to adjust to what works best.

Grow Up: Small spaces make it ideal to grow vertically, which means planting tall plants like squash, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes.

Drain Gain: Whatever container you choose for your garden, remember drainage holes are essential. Without proper drainage, soil can become waterlogged and plants may die. The holes need to be large enough to allow excess water to drain out.

Water Wise: Hand water every morning.

Once the plants are large and summer is hot, they will probably need watering in the eve-

ning, too. A little afternoon shade can keep them from drying out too quickly.

Soil Smart: A common mistake urban gardeners make is not making sure their soil is good quality. While those made with pesticides promise great results, they are loaded with chemicals. Go for organic soil and grow well from the beginning.

Have Fun: Gardening not only results in food or flowers, it is a great way to relieve

stress, have fun and get in touch with nature.

Remove Chaos From Closets Not only is feng shui fun to read about, it is also very practical.

One of the basic tenents of feng shui theory is to maintain an uncluttered home in order to have an uncluttered spirit. Most of our closets are probably just the opposite… wouldn’t it be great to clean them out?

Consider planting kumquat or orange trees on your property, in pots on your balcony, or even a bowl of oranges on your dining room table. Images of fish, such as koi or carp, symbolize abundance and should be a welcome addition.

Worms Are Your Friend

As part of an L.A. County-sponsored initiative to teach sustainable gardening practices, L.A.’s Smart Gardening Program hosts advanced composting and vermicomposting workshops throughout the Westside. At one workshop, worms were the focus.

Virtually every seat was filled by participants in the meeting room allocated for the workshop. A presentation given by one of Smart Gardening’s instructors included detailed information about how to obtain materials for composting as well as suggestions for building a better compost bin. Questions from the audience were interspersed throughout the discussion.

According to senior instructor Pamela Yates, the benefits of vermicomposting – or, composting with worms – are manifold. Compost-enriched soil is not only nutrient-rich but drought-resistant, requiring less water.

Additionally, a jar of “worm tea,” which is a homemade worm compost-enriched liquid substance, is anaerobic, meaning it can kill unwanted plants.

“You’ll never have to buy another pesticide or fertilizer again,” said Yates.

This workshop was one of many which are held regularly in virtually every region of L.A. County, most of which are beginning

workshops, meant to introduce participants to composting as well as water-resistant and fire-resistant gardening.

“If we get good attendance and good feedback we come back and do it again,” said Yates.

Smart Gardening also includes an educational initiative, teaching some of their gardening practices to children and teens in school. Following this initiative, three students whose projects were spurred by Smart Gardening’s initiatives were award-

ed college scholarships.

“The kids get into it. Worms become their pets,” “said Yates.

Panel of experts discuss fate of Brentwood’s iconic trees.

Last month a panel of experts discussed issues affecting the viability of Erythrina caffra, commonly known as the coral tree, in today’s environment.

Lining San Vicente Boulevard, coral trees are fast-growing and suffer from weak wood, making them susceptible to collapse unless pruned regularly but cver-pruning, however, causes the trees to “sunburn.”

Furthermore, San Vicente’s coral trees have not been spared by the impacts of California’s recent, record-breaking drought. Although coral trees thrive on little water, the drought forced the city to turn off irrigation to the median, posing a problem to future tree upkeep. Compounded with the effects of neglect and unfavorable weather, Brentwood’s coral trees suffer from a fungal infection spread by gophers. Oak Root Fungus is a common plant disease in California that thrives in moist conditions — the fungus has spread through the San Vicente Corridor through gopher damage.

The nonprofit SOS Coral Trees was created by Brentwood community members to fundraise for the preservation of the trees.

To save the trees SOS Coral Trees once called “synonymous with the name Brentwood,” the organization raised and invested

$175,000 for regular trimming and watering.

In 2010, the Brentwood Coral Tree Endowment Fund Campaign (BCTEF) succeeded SOS Coral Trees and raised $350,000 for tree care. BCTEF funds are presently invested in the maintenance of Brentwood’s coral trees.

According to SMMUSD, removing the mural, which has eroded significantly over time, and painting the southeast walls the same color as the rest of the school is a necessary step in rebranding the look and feel of the campus to better reflect the students, staff and programs.

Members of the Save the Muir Woods Mural campaign, however, are adamant about preserving the mural. “The issue of the Muir Woods mural has NEVER been put on a School Board agenda for public discussion in all the 5 years since the Save the Muir Woods Mural campaign began!” said founding member Jerry Rubin in an email. “It would be VERY UNFAIR for the School Board to approve the Board’s staff recommendation to get rid of the mural when there are so very many good environmental and art preservation reasons to keep it!”

Rubin added that the Obamas’ names could be placed boldly along the large wall space under the mural and twice if necessary along Lincoln Boulevard and Ocean Park Boulevard.

“It is highly doubtful the Obama’s would object to their names being located next to.. and associated with.. a newly refurbished Muir Woods mural,” Rubin continued.

Surely we can do both.. save and completely redo the ‘Muir Woods’ mural (with lead-free paint) at its current location AND support the creation of the Obama Center at the Olympic High School site!”

The fate of the Muir Woods mural comes months after the process to remove the Millard Sheets “Pleasures Along the Beach” glass mosaic began. Much like the mural, many members of the community considered the Millard Sheets mosaic to be an important and rare piece of Santa Monica history and public art.

In an open letter to the public published in 2014, the artist behind the Muir Woods

mural, Jane Golden, wrote, “I had no idea in 1978 when I painted this mural that one day it would be the centerpiece of a community discussion that includes conversations about art, education, preservation and the environment.”

Golden continued, “On the one hand it was about creating a spot of beauty on Lincoln Blvd, but the mural was also always meant to be a powerful reminder of John Muir and the legacy he left, inspiring us all to think about how much we need to be stewards of our land and guardians of the future.” Golden added, “…given the global environmental crisis that society has brought about, it is perhaps even more relevant today than it was 36 years ago when I first painted it.

Anonymous $25 Million Donation for St. John’s Donation will support Providence St. John’s Health Center, John Wayne Cancer Institute and Pacific Neuroscience Institute.

St. John’s Health Center Foundation, based in Santa Monica, announced on Tuesday that an anonymous donor contributed $25 million towards a fundraising effort aimed at raising $150 million. Donations for the “Power of Partnership Campaign” will help to fund clinical and research programs, new equipment and staff.

“The generous gift, one of the largest ever made to St. John’s, will enable physicians

and scientists to provide the personal and compassionate care St. John’s is known for while funding innovation in clinical care,” Foundation President/CEO Bob Klein said in a statement. “The return on this investment will impact generations to come.”

The $25 million donation is reportedly the third-largest to be made to the hospi-

tal and will support Providence St. John’s Health Center, John Wayne Cancer Institute and Pacific Neuroscience Institute. In 2009, St. John’s received a $100 million donation followed by a $35 million donation two years later from biotech billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon- Shiong and his wife, Michele Chan.

By Keldine Hull According to the National Park Service (NPS), beginning October 1, law enforcement rangers began patrolling the Santa Monica Mountains on mountain bikes and horseback to educate visitors on proper trail etiquette. Their increased presence is part of a 12-month educational campaign aimed at dispelling any confusion on the trails frequented by hikers, bikers and equestrians.

Approximately 500 miles of multi-use trails make up the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

“Let’s say you’re hiking on a trail and you come upon an equestrian coming up behind you and a mountain biker zooming downhill from the other direction - what is everyone supposed to do?” said Coby Bishop, Supervisory Law Enforcement Park Ranger. “Spending time in the outdoors should not be complicated and visitors are often unclear on who should yield and to whom.”

we can all be respectful toward one another while recreating. Visitors are not always clear on these rules of engagement and that can turn into a safety issue that could have easily been avoided.”

According to the NPS, trail etiquette rules to keep in mind include hiking in a single line on narrow trails when in a large group, yielding to others hiking uphill when going downhill and listening out for cyclists, runners and equestrians approaching from behind.

Another large cat in the Santa Monica mountains has died after being hit by a car, the second bobcat to fall victim to such a fate in September.

"We are sorry to report that B-363, an adult male bobcat who was caught earlier this year and collared in an unburned area of Westlake Village, was hit by a car and killed on Kanan Road recently," said Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Ranger Ana Beatriz Cholo on September 26.

B-363 was one of seven bobcats caught during last year's trapping season, which ended in February 2019.

"This handsome kitty’s movement pattern was interesting and somewhat unusual from what our researchers usually observe.

For one, he was really into hanging out in suburban spaces. His GPS points showed that he was often found in and around landscaped backyards as opposed to nearby open spaces that had recently burned.

He was likely doing normal bobcat things like hunting rabbits," Cholo said.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), there are a lot of hazards for bobcats who live on the edge of urban spaces.

With an increased road network, bobcats face the danger of getting hit by vehicles while trying to move between patches of habitat. As animals spend more time in urban areas, the transmission of diseases from domesticated animals to wild animal populations can also be a problem. Exposure to rodenticide poisons is another challenge to urban wildlife as homeowners try to control rodent populations.

"We have been continuously studying and radio-tracking bobcats in targeted areas since 1996, making it the longest-running bobcat study. Prior to 2002, they had relatively high survival rates in the study area but that has been changing over the past 16 years," Cholo said.

On September 7, mountain lion P-61 was struck and killed on the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass. The four-year-old cat had crossed the massive 10-lane freeway near the Sepulveda Pass area just a couple of months ago.

By Kathryn Whitney Boole In 2007, a NASA astronaut named Lisa Nowak who had flown on a shuttle mission the previous year drove hundreds of miles across the country to confront a romantic rival, a female captain in the US Air Force. So focused, single-minded and disciplined was Nowak that she even wore an astronaut-issued diaper to

minimize rest stops. She then disguised herself in a wig, glasses and trench coat to confront the “other woman” in a parking lot at the Orlando International Airport. The love triangle involved Nowak’s fellow astronaut, Bill Oefelein. This tale is no doubt the “story” that is behind the phrase “Inspired by a true story” that opens "Lucy in the Sky".

OUR PRECIOUS STUFF

By Ron Wynn I’ve been representing home sellers for over 30 years and have dealt with the transactional side and the emotional side.

As the market changes from a hot seller’s market to a sluggish buyer’s market and from a market of tight inventory and selling prices averaging at 10% above the listing price, to foreclosure times with building inventories and massive price reductions, the challenges for a real estate sales person and advisor changes depending on needs, expectations and the realities of possibility.

One thing that seems to come up when homes are occupied and the homeowner has lived for decades in their home or in cases that children are selling the inherited family home they grew up in is, the paralyzing reality of how to liquidate the furniture, memoirs and personal treasures that have accumulated for years.

How many times have I had a homeowner say to me, “There is no way I am going to clean out my closets and my garage.” “I’ll never move.” But moving isn’t always a choice. There are times when selling a family home must be done, for example in a case of divorce, employment relocation, or at financial crisis.

Our stuff is our comfort, our defining characteristics. It’s our ability to identify with our past, our present, our deceased loved ones, our family, our friends, our fantasies, our dreams, our goals, our ambitions, our sense of humor, our obsessions, our sarcasm, our personality, our passions and our sense of self. Our stuff grounds us, connects us, makes us whole, and provides a solid foundation to grasp onto for many people. For other people, our stuff is disposable. It is simply the necessary items for living a comfortable and satisfying life with no attachment to such material things emotionally. But truthfully this later group is by far, the minority group.

Speaking for the prior, our stuff, even though it is treasured, carries very little value to other people which comes often as a great surprise and disappointment at the point of calling for an appraisal or es-

tate evaluation. The real problem is, our stuff paralyzes us to move on. It can be a rope around our neck. It can cause depression, anxiety and a reason to become lost in a desire to become organized that never happens. Speaking with several psychiatrists, I recently learned that one does not need to be a fully acknowledged hoarder to have hoarder tendencies. Hoarder tendencies might simply mean one has feelings of anxiety over their stuff.

When a home is stuffed with possessions it becomes difficult to have friends over, entertain, and do normal dusting and cleaning. It is not uncommon to feel overpowered, overwhelmed and out of control. It can bring on shortness of breath or dizziness, anger, skepticism and negative thoughts and feelings. How can these valuable treasures that we cherish cause so much trouble to us and how can we avoid being a victim to our stuff?

Although I do not have the answer, I will simply say “Awareness” is the key to not letting your stuff control your freedom and your destiny. Think about your choices in life and just how willing you are to be controlled by your stuff. Letting go is difficult for most of us, but try your best to move on knowing that you are not alone in your pain. Liberate yourself and remember, its just stuff!

have touched on the fragile existential relationship we humans have with life and death, with our planet and our universe. The film also uses the medium of cinema in cutting-edge ways to mirror the mental state of the protagonist, Lucy Cola. The image on the screen appears narrowed, closed-in when she returns to Earth from her assignment in space.

Natalie Portman embodies the physicality of the role of Lucy beautifully. You seldom see an actor who can successfully mimic the gait of someone who has had too much to drink, as Portman does in this film. She did a fine job of portraying the intensity of this character without seeming overdramatic. If you watch the astounding documentary Maiden about the first all-female crew to sail around the world, you will see that Portman’s portrayal of the obsessive and resolute Lucy is very similar to the real-life Tracy Edwards, the captain of that crew.

Note that Lucy’s rival in this movie, Erin, played by Zazie Beetz, comes from a well-traveled background, having lived abroad during her childhood, absorbing other cultures. Lucy by contrast, has spent her life in the same small town in Texas. This illustrates that the same experience of the loneliness of being physically disassociated from Earth will affect people differently depending on both their psychological makeup and on the scope of their existence. Pay attention to what Lucy is listening to in her car near the end of the film.

One character in the movie presents the idea

that women are too driven by their emotions to be great astronauts. To counter that concept, just look up Peggy Whitsun, who holds a doctorate in Biochemistry from Rice University and went on to break numerous records as an astronaut and commander of the International Space Station, with more than 534 total days in space. I have seen her speak. She is highly intelligent, inspirational and down to earth (no pun intended).

It is easy to see that the same impulses that can propel us toward greatness can drive us to confusion and madness. There is a fine balance. The end of the movie is a somewhat serene surprise, full of hope. It will certainly inspire you to think.
