Palisades Fire Over Half Contained 45-acre brush fire at 55 percent containment as firefighters prepare for wind.

After relentless work by firefighters, the Palisades Fire remains at 45 acres and 55 percent contained as of 9:00 a.m. Thursday and while Santa Ana winds were weaker than expected overnight, gusts up to 50 MPH are still anticipated and the Los Angeles Fire Department is advising residents to be prepared to evacuate if told to do so.

The Palisades Fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 21. The fire’s initial location was corrected by the LAFD Tuesday to 800 N Palisades Drive from 500 N Palisades Drive.

As of Thursday morning, the structures previously threatened and evacuated remains at 628, while structures with damage is reported at eight, according to the LAPD. There has been no loss of human life or structures destroyed by this blaze.

Officer-Involved Shooting Occurs in SM SMPD shoots man near the beach.

By Sam Catanzaro An officer-involved shooting that ended in a possible death by suicide occurred last Sunday night in the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) on October 20, 2019 at 11:50 pm, SMPD officers were in the area of Ocean Avenue and Bicknell Avenue when they heard two gunshots coming from the

area of the 000 block of Bay Street. Officers respond to the area to investigate and were directed to a male subject who had just shot into an occupied vehicle. According to the SMPD, officers made contact with the suspect who failed to comply with commands.

The suspect fled on foot, running southwest onto the sand. Officers engaged in a foot pursuit when the suspect produced a handgun and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The SMPD says a preliminary investigation indicates the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect was pronounced at the scene.

Victims inside the occupied vehicle were not struck by gunfire or injured in the inci-

dent, according to the SMPD. The investigation is still ongoing and the SMPD says there is no more information currently available.

“There will be no Press Information Officer to speak on this today. Information in the press releases will be all the information we are providing at this time. The attempted murder investigation/officer involved shooting/suicide is an on-going investigation,” said SMPD Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias.

MAGA Hat Man Sprays Anti-Trump Protesters with Bear Repellent David Dempsey faces up to eight years in jail

By Sam Catanzaro A 32-year-old felon has been charged with spraying bear repellent on a crowd of political protesters at the Santa Monica Pier this past weekend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

David Nicholas Dempsey of Sherman Oaks faces one felony count of use of tear gas and one misdemeanor count of unlawful tear gas activity. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of eight years in county jail.

According to Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Lt. Candice Cobarrubias on October 19, 2019 at approximately 1:20 pm, officers working the Pier observed a fight between two groups of protestors. One of the protestors, later identified as David Dempsy, dispersed a canister of bear repellent into the crowd. Numerous protestors and non-involved pier patrons were affected by the chemical.

“Mr. Dempsey was immediately detained by officers. Harbor Services Officers and Santa Monica Fire Department rendered aid to those affected by the chemical agent. Protestors from both groups dispersed after the incident but

were monitored by officers in the event another escalation started. No further incidents occurred,” Cobarrubias said.

As seen in a YouTube video posted by Be Less Stupid, Dempsey wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat, sprayed protestors with bear repellent who had marched onto the Pier following a rally organized by Refuse Fascism calling for President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to be removed from office.

“It was these f—ing libtards over here, man,” Dempsey told police in video. “These commies — I didn’t do anything.”

A group of Trump supporters followed the protesters to the pier. The groups exchanged insults for around 10 minutes, according to the Los Angeles Times, before shoving one another and yelling obscenities. That’s when Dempsey pulled out the bear repellant video shows.

Police cornered Dempsey soon after the incident and detained him near the police substation on the Pier.

As reported by the Washington Post, a Facebook account appearing to belong to Dempsey regularly insults liberals and celebrates Trump.

The case against Dempsey includes allegations that Dempsey was previously convicted between 2006 and 2017 of felonies including second-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit commercial burglary and fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly.

The defendant pleaded not guilty charges Tuesday and is scheduled to return on Nov. 5 to set a date for a preliminary hearing in Department W31 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Airport Branch.

The case remains under investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department.

Santa Monica Architects for a Responsible Tomorrow

(Part 2)

Last week our colleague Thane Roberts, in a reprise of an article from four years ago, said: “Insanity was once defined as doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result.

Once again, our City Council has embarked on a

misadventure that will likely end the same way as before with the Hines Project- a major waste of funds and time for all parties concerned, especially the developers.” This week he continues the discussion about the proposed Plaza at Santa Monica, a massive project in the very heart of downtown Santa Monica.

The reasons given for the project’s excessive mass, height, lack of open space, housing and parking come back to costs- “We can’t afford it”. This despite the fact that the annual ground rent for the project is only about $ 1.3 million/ year for a project that will cost in excess of $ 250 million. The exorbitant costs likely have less to

do with the requested community amenities than the design of the project. One reason its design is “iconic” and “one of a kind” is that it will be an extremely complicated and expensive project to build. While The Plaza’s stacked, splayed blocks looks simple, when it comes to construction they are anything but. Normally, structural systems “stack” atop one another from floor to floor starting at the lowest parking levels and continuing to the roof. This is not the case for The Plaza.

The fact that the floors are skewed and offset will make the structure of the building complicated and hence more expensive to build. In addition, the economies of having the roof of one level be the floor to the next are lost. Instead of ‘one roof’, The Plaza will have many “roofs” and, in this case, ones that must be waterproofed and designed for landscape and foot traffic even if they are never used for that purpose. The Plaza will be a “Type 1” (steel) construction that is the most expensive building type due to the fire proofing, elevators, mechanical systems etc. that are required. At the other end of the spectrum is Type 4 (wood frame buildings) that is 1/3 the height (around 50’) but much less expensive to construct with fewer constrictions.

While an “iconic” building of this scale and uniqueness will certainly draw attention, is it the kind of attention the City wants? Does it complement our current beachside ambiance or degrade

it? This conflict, as well the other ‘trade offs’ for such a massive building, renders it an illogical choice as our City’s centerpiece that will forever tower over our downtown. The alternative-several small, simpler structures that were in keeping with the scale of the City–or even much better, an open central plaza with trees and space for real public activities– would be much less expensive and could free up funds for housing, open space and some of the other amenities that residents desire. It is a more modest approach, one that would be more attuned to our small, beach town character. It might even save enough money to allow for a real ‘Plaza’ or park instead of one in name only. Sometimes reducing expenses is better than chasing more funds. Currently, it is a case of the tail wagging the dog.

By Keldine Hull On Friday, November 1, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., the Riley Youth Foundation will host its inaugural fundraising gala, a “Journey to Success.” The Ri-

ley Youth Foundation was founded by Maya Riley after the tragic passing of her husband Rashad Riley, an Air Force veteran, officer in the Santa Monica Police Department and mentor. Riley passed away in a drowning accident while on the island of Kauai on April 12, 2019.

“When my husband was here, we had talked about possibly doing some type of youth program during the summer when he had a little more time,” Riley explained. “We’ve always loved children.”

Times have really changed and trends have changed to meet today’s area’s demographics and age groups. I have sold homes in the neighborhood for over 30 years. Never before have I represented a so many buyers of age less than 35; in some cases, only several years out of college earing $200,000 and above. Of course, salaries have gone way up, but taking it back 20 years ago, people earning $50,000 were generally in their mid-40s, with many promotions behind them and job seniority to bring them to this earning level.

Not every buyer is 35 years old or less, in fact, many of our buyers are in their late 50s and even into their late 60s, but more often these are clients trading down after becoming empty nesters. Others might still be trading up as their children are entering their teens.

Let’s take a look at what’s hot and what’s not these days. Remember grandma’s silver collection and beautiful tea service cart, her elegant china cabinet filled with tea cups and porcelain? Remember the Hummel collection, the gorgeous Yadros and the ivory figures and hand carved memorabilia? Remember the tapestries, the rugs, the embroidered pillows and chair seats? People would use that stuff for entertaining at home and to show their status back in the day.

Today, most people use their formal dining room for major holidays at best, including Thanksgiving, Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Mother’s Day maybe, Christmas dinner and for a Chanukah Dinner. The rest of the year it sits empty. Today its about a simple, uncluttered lifestyle for most people. Living rooms are rarely used at all and when they are used, they are used more as a waiting area, not a formal entertaining area. I’ve seen colors change from very dark browns and avocado green in the 50’s and 60’s to gray and pink kitchens and bathrooms in the 70’s to peach color walls and pillows in the 80’s to blue and gray in the 90’s to the white white white big houses today. Wow – What’s coming next?

Getting back to trends, the smart home is in.

Technology is everywhere.

Wireless is here to stay. Remember the huge theater size tv with all the guts behind the screen? The unit weighed 200 pounds and took 3 people to move. Take a look at what people are using today.

Kitchens are very different as well. The no clutter look and minimalistic look is very much sought after. Everything is recessed, hidden and counter concealed. Kitchens are either white or black. Cabinetry is either painted white or stained dark. The look is

very architectural.

Backyard preferences have changed as well. A ½ acre yard may be a beautiful sight, but the cost of maintenance and the restrictions on water make it less desirable than before. People are more eager for a play area off the open kitchen and family room. The yard needs to be easy access and on the same level as the kitchen and family room. It is also very desirable to have a covered area for eating and barbeque that can accommodate up to a dozen or more people, because entertaining is far more common in the family room and around the barbeque than in the formal dining room.

The master suite today has become a retreat and is expected to have huge walk in closets that are fully organized to keep everything neatly put away. Although gorgeous free-standing bathtubs are cool and trendy, they are rarely used for more than to photograph.

Oversize beautifully appointed stall showers with steam and elegant hardware are totally in, as are sitting/lounging areas in the master retreat, and fronting the adjacent family bedroom area.

Also very important is the location of the bedrooms. In a larger 2 story home, it is most desired to have 4-bedroom suits upstairs. Jack and Jill bedrooms are more a thing of the 80’s and 90’s but are still ok and not that much of an objection. A downstairs guest bedroom and an office is also very much a need today. The home office does not obviously need to look like a library these days, but it does need to have a rich and elegant look to meet the standard. Walls are usually white with color brought in using tasteful art, fabrics and accent pillows, all up to the taste of a well selected designer. The ADU is also something new and very much desired. Even if one doesn’t rent it for income, most people can easily put a detached home office to good use. The guesthouse alternative also accommodates not only the need for a secondary home office, but also can answer to the need for a nanny’s living space. A downstairs fifth bedroom is often requested as an alternative maids’ room, nanny room, guest room, gym or secondary office when there is no other designated space.

I could go on much longer but, in a nutshell, the priorities are technology smart home concepts, open floor plan with orientation to the yard, volume ceilings, natural light and lots of windows and a useable, functional, very private backyard. Whether grand and large or intimate and small, the look today is condensed by the vision of open style floor plan, airy and uncluttered, with orientation to an indoor/outdoor free flowing California lifestyle. Pools are great, but not for everyone. Spas and Jacuzzis are often the better choice especially when a large pool might eat up a much-needed safe grassy play area.

I called one of my best friends, and I’m crying, and said I have a great idea. We need to start a youth program, a foundation. That’s how that idea was born, a moment of clarity where I was by myself. I’ve literally ran with it ever since, and we have not stopped.”

The moto of the Riley Foundation is “Inspiring, Motivating, and Building Strong Leaders.”

Through various educational, fitness and mentorship programs, the foundation hopes to guide children in a positive direction, offering them important life skills that go beyond what they learn in school. Children will also learn about the importance of money management and finance.

“There’s three parts to your child’s success and that’s the parents, the teachers and then the child,” Riley explained. “And it’s so true because the teachers play such a crucial role in the development of your child when they’re away from home. At the end of the day, it’s still up to the parents to guide them and teach them. The teachers shouldn’t be building the characteristics of their students. That should be coming from home and then practicing it at school with the support of the teacher.”

A parent mentoring program will also be available to offer support to parents. Riley continued, “Just because you’re a parent, doesn’t mean everybody’s doing it the right way or everybody knows what to do or has the best advice. We want to be able to provide a location where parents can just come and talk to each other.”

Riley added, “I think the quality and passion that we are bringing to the youth is different. And we’re not targeting any specific type of youth.

We’re not going to target underprivileged children. We’re not going to target low- income cities.

We want to be able to welcome everybody.”

In the months following her husband’s passing, Riley received an overwhelming amount of support from family, friends and the community around her. “We have the Santa Monica Police

Department who have been extremely amazing and supportive. I could not have been in this situation as strong as I’ve been fighting without them.

They have provided so much support. They are always here for me including the chief of police.”

Sponsored by the Santa Monica Police Association, Team Bully Buster and Get Beyond Fit, the gala also falls on Rashad Riley’s birthday. “That’s the reason we pushed so fast,” Riley explained.

“I know a gala probably takes about a year to put together. We literally got Riley strong and we, as in our friends, family, the police department, and other people that loved him dearly, got together and made it happen.”

Over 200 guests, including important members of the community, are expected to attend the black-tie event that will feature music, entertainment and a silent auction and raffle. “It’ll be a great night of information, inspiration and celebration,” Riley continued. “And of course, we’re celebrating the concept of the foundation and his birthday, giving him the gift of continuing his legacy. My children will be there to show the support and everybody can see their faces and see that they’re okay.”

Riley added, “We’re fighting and we’re staying strong as a family. I will say that this project definitely helped me heal because I feel like I have a purpose. I feel like he has purpose. This will continue for his purpose.”

Chefs for Seniors offers a unique and tailored dining experience for senior citizens in the comfort of their own home.

The service, which provides in-house personal chefs and custom made meals, has grown to nearly 50 locations throughout the United States in less than three years.

Licensed chefs undergo background checks and are fully insured.

Sonia Vissani Lesko is a new franchise owner for the West Los Angeles area which currently serves seniors in Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Marina Del Rey and Venice. “I always loved to cook,” Lesko explained. “My background is in education. I was a preschool owner until last August, but I always had the passion for cooking. I’m Italian and growing up, we had very good food. After I sold my preschool, I started taking cooking classes. I decided to do something with it. I was looking for a purpose and wanted to follow my heart, cooking for people who appreciate the good food.”

Her passion for food led her to Chefs for Seniors where she could use her love for food to help others. She was attracted to the business model and wanted to get involved. “The Chefs for Seniors idea is to provide good meals for seniors with the hope that they can live longer in their own home without moving to assisted living.

Maybe they can’t cook for themselves anymore and they want something that is homemade for them.”

The Chefs for Seniors service begins with a consultation where the chefs learn about their clients and the kinds of food they prefer. Leko continued, “Basically, it’s custom made food. First, we ask a lot of questions, what they like and dislike.

When we cook, we cook specifically for them. Every week we decide the menu for the following week.”

When I’m done cooking, I clean up the kitchen and then we decide the menu for the following week.”

At 8 p.m. Monday, all evacuation orders were lifted from the Palisades Fire but the LAFD is advising residents who return home to be on alert.

The Santa Ana wind event expected to last through Friday afternoon is anticipated to bring wind gusts 35-50 MPH. This wind, along with increased temperatures, brings critically low relative humidity to the vegetation that likely has not last burned since 1938.

“This Santa Ana wind event, serves as a reminder to be prepared in the event of a brush fire in the Los Angeles area. Residents living in wildfire-prone areas should remain vigilant and familiarize themselves with the Ready-Set-Go program (with an emphasis on Set and Go at this stage),” Humphrey said. “For those of living near current wildfire incidents, be vigilant and keep your TV or radio on. Make certain you have your family critical papers, phone data, pets and other valuables ready to evacuate if so directed.”

According to Humphrey, three firefighters have been injured fighting the blaze. On Wednesday, two firefighters were taken to the hospital after being struck by falling rocks. One civilian was taken to the hospital Monday with a respiratory issue.

Directors Guild of America Hosts COLCOA CENTER STAGE

A gala reception kicked off the recent opening night of the 23rd edition of COLCOA* French Film festival held at the Directors Guild. Featured this year were selections from its Film Noir Series, French NeWave 2.0, After 10, World Cinema, Documentaries, and Classics. This annual film festival is sponsored by the Franco-American Cultural Fund, and is collaboration between the Directors Guild of America, the Motion Picture Association, The Writers Guild of America West and France’s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music (SACEM). It should be noted that due to space limitations, I’ve restricted my comments to film.

Patrons, industry folks, actors, and media representatives gathered for the Opening Night Gala at the Directors Guild, which officially kicked-off this year’s festival. After feasting on a wide variety of nibbles and libations, we were ushered into the Renoir Theatre for the screening Les Misérables, co-written by Alexis Manenti and director Ladj Ly. Shown for the first time in the U.S., in association with Amazon Studios, it won the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Best First Film and is France’s 2020 Oscar submission for Best International Feature.* I must say that would not have been my first choice as we’ve seen a variation on that theme many times before. The story revolves around low-income

housing projects in the Les Bosquets neighborhood of Montfermeil, France. It features bad cops, a good cop, petty thieves, the Muslim Brotherhood, and a sad group of street kids left to their own devices who figure out how to retaliate against the abusive cops - nothing that we haven’t seen before. (Cast: Daniel Auteuil (Victor), Guillaume Canet (Antoine), Doria Tillier (Margot), Fanny Ardant (Marianne), Michael Cohen (Maxime), Denis Podalydès (François), Pierre Ardidi (Pierre) In my opinion, a much more compelling film, with a very unique story line, is In Safe Hands. Written and tenderly directed

by Jeanne Herry, who assembled an excellent acting ensemble, each of whom gives a heartfelt performance, the story takes us through the fascinating, intricate, and gentle process of adoption in France. One could only wish we had a similar, almost painless, procedure. (Cast: Sandrine Kiberlain, Gilles Lellouche, Élodie Bouchez, Olivia Côte, Miou Miou) Other films worth mentioning: Hungry for Love, written by Laure de Colbert and well directed by Renaud Bertrand, the story revolves around the coming of age or “spring awakening” of a young girl named Chloé, fascinatingly played by Luna Carpiaux, who captures the teenage angst of young love. The story takes us through the trials and tribulations of her first love, as well as touching upon the potential devastating consequences of social media. (Cast: Luna Carpiaux, Armelle Deutsch, Marilyn Lima, Jules Houplain) Conviction is a fascinating courtroom drama

written by Isabelle Lazard, Karim Dridi, and Antoine Raimbault, who is a first-time director. Based on a true story, the drama revolves around the second trial of Jacques Viguier, a law professor accused of murdering his wife who mysteriously vanished ten years ago. The story is both compelling and intriguing, as parts of a complicated puzzle are woven together. Highly polished performances are given by the ensemble. (Cast: Antoine Raimbault, Isabelle Lazard, Karim Dridi, Marina Foïs, Olivier Gourmet, Laurent Lucas, Jean Benguigui) One of my favorite films is Papicha, a stunning look at the life and times of young girls in Algeria trying to live like normal teenagers. The powerful script written by Fadette Drouard and Mounia Meddour, who also directed, draws back the curtain on what a group of young women endured because of Sharia law, sometimes enforced by violent women wearing burkas. Despite the looming brutality, these spirited young women attending a private school manage to enjoy some of the forbidden activities. A joint venture between France, Algeria, Qatar, and Belgium, hopefully one of those countries will submit Papicha for Best International Feature consideration. (Cast: Lyna Khoudri, Shirine Boutella, Amira Hilda Douaouda, Zahra Doumandji) Writer/director Jérémy Clapin’s, I Lost My Body, won both the Audience Award and COLCOA Critics’ Award. Honestly, the reason for the awards escapes me. The film basically revolved around a hand searching for its body.

(Cast: Hakim Faris, Victoire du Bois, Patrick d’Assumçao) Cyrano My Love, one of two closing night films, won the American Students Award. I absolutely loved this wonderfully written and directed film by Alexis Michalik, who also plays the lead role of the 20-year-old playwright who is commissioned to write a play while struggling with writer’s block. Based on Michalik’s hit play, the story is set in turn-of-the-century Paris and said to be somewhat based on fact. It is a hilarious look at how this playwright stumbles upon lines for his script. Cyrano My Love is

deliciously photographed by cinematographer Giovanni Fiore Coltellacci, who captures the beautiful textures of that period of time. (Cast: Thomas Solivérès, Olivier Gourmet, Mathilde Seignier, Tom Leeb) The second closing night selection was La Belle Époque. Written and directed by Nicolas Bolduc, who also did the cinematography. (Maybe too many hats?) The story revolves around a theatrical troupe that specializes in historical re-enactments. I found the film tedious, and as it was getting late, I actually thought about leaving before the ending, but my professionalism prevented me from so doing. Suddenly the fire alarm sounded and lights began flashing around the perimeter of the room. We were asked to vacate the theatre but in a few minutes were allowed to re-enter. However, I barely sat down in my seat when we were asked to leave again.

With fire trucks outside the Directors Guild building, I decided to call it a night. (Cast: Thomas Solivérès, Olivier Gourmet, Mathilde Seignier, Tom Leeb) The film was screened the next day, but alas, due to a prior commitment, I was unable to make that screening. Oh well. C'est la vie and… a l’année prochaine*** *The COLCOA French Film Festival is the premier festival for French films in Los Angeles and is an acronym for City of Lights, City of Angels, the original name of the festival in Hollywood, which began in the 1990s. **Formerly referred to as Best Foreign Language Film *** “That’s life” and “See you next year”
