January 22 marked a momentous day for the numerous people involved in the designation of the 11th Street Bungalows as a historic district, including members and supporters of Friends of 11th Street.

After hearing both sides of the proposal, City Council voted to designate the 11th Street Bungalows as a historic cluster, preserving its legacy for generations to come.

While the majority of those in attendance supported the council’s decision, there were many Santa Monica residents who argued that the bungalows lacked

resident chosen to replace Tony Vazquez.

Tuesday might, Ana Maria Jara was appointed as the newest member of Santa Monica City Council to replace Tony Vazquez. Jara will serve on City Council for the remainder of Vazquez’s term, which ends in November 2020.

Vazquez, who won a seat on the California Board of Equalization in the midterm elections, submitted a letter of resignation to the council earlier this month leaving his seat vacant.

The public had a little over a week to apply for the vacant seat, and after the January 17 deadline, 76 individuals had applied for consideration. At the council meeting Tuesday night, in the second round of voting, Jara was appointed by a 5-1 vote, with Councilmember Sue Himmelrich casting her vote for Rent Control Board member Caroline M. Torosis. In the first round of voting, Himmelrich and Councilmember Kevin McKeown cast their vote for former Planning Commissioner Jennifer Kennedy, while Mayor Gleam Davis voted for Santa Monica College Board member Barry Snell.

After Jara secured the votes, the council chamber burst into applause and breaking with decorum, the public’s applause was allowed to continue. Jara, who was in the audience, was sworn in immediately and took her seat on the dais.

“I am so humbled by this opportunity and the faith you have deposited in me,” Jara said from the dais. “I look forward to continue serving everyone as I have been doing for years on end. It’s taken years for us to be able to do this, and today we become part of history.”

On Tuesday night, Santa Monica City Council appointed Ana Maria Jara (bottom right) to fill the seat recently left vacant by Tony Vazquez.

Jara, a Latina, has lived in the same rent-controlled apartment in Santa Monica for almost 35 years and has worked at Santa Monica College for over 25 years. Before her Council appointment, she served as Chair and Vice Chair for Santa Monica’s Social Services Commission, which she resigned from Tuesday night. She also served on the Commission for the Status of Women from 2007 to 2010. Other public service roles Jara has filled include membership on the Human Relations Council and Familias Latinas Unidas.

“She is a strategic and tireless advocate and has worked on smart and inclusive solutions on a wide range of issues including being involved in the City’s Cradle to Career initiative since its inception,” the City said in a statement Tuesday night.

Jara’s appointment comes in the midst of a lawsuit filed against the city by Maria Loya, a resident of the Pico neighborhood, who contends that the City of Santa Monica’s at-large election system

dilutes the Latino vote in elections. A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge has ruled in favor of Loya, most recently directing the city to create districts based off seven-district map drawn by the plaintiffs.

The City has said in multiple statements that they will likely appeal the judge’s final decision, as they contend those district elections will, in fact, diminish the voting power of Latino residents in a Pico district.

In an article published Tuesday night by the Santa Monica Lookout, it was reported that plaintiff attorney Kevin Shenkman was sourced as saying that Jara was the only Hispanic to testify in support of the city during the trial.

The Santa Monica Mirror has reached out to Jara and Shenkman asking for confirmation of this statement. Shenkman confirmed that this statement is accurate but at the time of publishing Jara has not responded.

Revenue Decreasing, Costs Increasing Looking at the 10-year financial forecast for Santa Monica.

By Tor Marom At this Tuesday’s Santa Monica City Council meeting, staff presented their Ten-Year Financial Forecast for the City of Santa Monica.

“We look at a decade that will bring changes to our traditional expectations about revenue and expenditure growth,” Gigi Decavalles-Hughes, Santa Monica’s Director of Finance, said.

“There’s going to be, pretty quickly, a shortfall between revenues and expenditures.”

Among the causes for the projected revenue decrease are things such as online shopping surpassing sales from brick-and-mortar establishments, fewer people using city parking structures, and a projected decrease in tourism revenue over the next decade.

While the forecast shows that the city is expected to increase revenue by an average of about 2.3 percent per year over the period, the city’s expenses are projected to increase by 3.2 percent per year, thus creating a projected shortfall.

Other large factors for the coming expenses are the city’s personnel costs—including healthcare and workman’s compensation— and coming construction projects, such as the replacement of Fire Station 1. Except for the

construction projects already set in stone, the forecast does not account for any other development projects at this time. Staff advised that any additional projects would increase the city’s maintenance costs. Of the larger projected expenditures, one of the most significant is retirement costs.

“Our annual pension bill will go from $52 million in the first year of our forecast to $103 million in the last,” Decavalles-Hughes said.

According to Decavalles-Hughes, unfunded liability cost increases account for 73 percent of the $51 million increase.

Looking at the Ten-Year Forecast as a whole, city staff provided several projected outcomes, looking at the best case scenarios, the potential of a huge recession, and in between. What staff presented as the most probable outcome is that the general fund will see a structural deficit of $5 million in fiscal year 2020/21, increasing to $31.5 million by the end of the forecast. The significant increase in the final year is due the Pension Advisory Committee’s suggestion to pay off the total sum within 13 years, saving an approximate $100 million in interest costs.

The forecast allows for fairly little wiggle-room without an ongoing reallocation of resources. Among the positives shared by staff is that most of the city’s funds are fairly self-sufficient, but the general fund will likely be needed to support the Pier and Housing funds within the coming ten year period.

costs and increase the city’s income within the period. While construction costs are projected to increase by about 5 percent annually, this could change in the case of a large recession, a case that Winterer finds very likely in the next few years.

“I’m trying to find some rays of sunshine in all this doom and gloom,” he said. “The one upside of recession is that construction costs will go down … and then the airport fund. If we choose to close the airport in 2028 then all of a sudden we’re unburdened of the operational cost and we’re still getting the revenues from the leases there.”

a suggestion to combat some of the revenue decreases.

“We have parking lots all over the city ... we continue to allow people to build additional parking and you’re saying that we have less people parking in our lots and less revenue from it.” Himmelrich said. “Why don’t we stop giving people permission […] and instead make them park with us or not at all?”

“It’s a major policy shift, and worthy of discussion and debate,” City Manager Rick Cole said. “I don’t think you’ll get any argument from the planning department on that, you are going to get some argument from the private sector on that.”

One of the greatest issues for the city to solve according to Cole is organizing the budget in a way that accounts for the problems currently facing the city, recognizing that simply ramping up the funds for current processes would bankrupt the city.

“100 years ago when a city our size would have 1,000 fires a year, you’d have a department that was exclusively devoted to fighting fires. Now our fire department spends less than one percent of their time fighting fires.” Cole added. “99 percent of their time is on emergency medical and 25 percent of their time is on dealing with homelessness...there’s not a way to deal with that across departmental lines.”

Included in the staff’s forecast is a suggestion for the city to renew its current grants—whose

ARREST: Juveniles Crash Stolen Car, Board Expo Line SMPD officers arrest three individuals Wednesday.

Three young men have been arrested by police for crashing a stolen car on 5th Street and Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica Wednesday afternoon.

According to Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Lieutenant Saul Rodriguez, the three individuals, all juveniles, were reported by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) of having car-jacked a black SUV on Sunday, January 20 in the City of Los Angeles.

On Wednesday afternoon, the three individuals upon spotting an SMPD patrol car, accelerated and abruptly and turned right before losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a tree in front of the Courtyard by Marriott on 5th and Colorado. Nobody was injured in the incident.

According to Lt. Rodriguez, the three individuals fled the scene of the accident and ran over to the Downtown Santa Monica Expo Line station and boarded a train. SMPD officers, alerted by eyewitnesses about their fleeing, arrested the three juveniles before the train left the station.

Rodriguez said that the City of Los Angeles will likely file criminal charges against the three individuals with the County of Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

Home security footage shows Charles Marcell Newman attempting to make entry into a Santa Monica residence.

Multiple Charges for SM’s Prowler Police seeking additional information on Charles Marcell Newman.

By Staff Writer On Wednesday, January 23, the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office filed charges on Charles Marcell Newman, a 41-year-old male, for his possible involvement in a series of prowling incidents and vehicle thefts.

Following a preliminary investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), detectives developed information leading to Newman as the primary suspect involved in a series of crimes: • On January 14, 2019, at about 3:12 a.m., a suspect attempted to make entry through the front door of a residence at the 700 block of 25th Street.

• On January 16, 2019, at about 1:28 a.m., a suspect attempted to make entry through the front door of a residence at the 400 block of 24th Street.

• On January 16, 2019, at about 4:30 a.m., a vehicle theft occurred at the 500 block of 21st Place.

• On January 21, 2019, at about 2:45 a.m., a vehicle theft occurred in the 400 block of 14th Street.

• On January 21, 2019, with the assistance of the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force (L.A. Impact) – Group # 25, Newman was located in the 500 block of South Flower Street in Los Angeles and taken into police custody.

Newman was booked at SMPD Jail.

Newman has been charged with two counts of 647(h) PC – Prowling; 10852 CVC – Vehicle Tampering; 496 PC – Receiving Stolen Property; 290 PC – Failure to Register as a Sex Offender; and 3056 PC - Parole Violation. Newman remains in custody without bail pending future court proceedings.

On January 27, 2019, five Santa Monica teenagers will be awarded the highest rank one can earn in the Boy Scouts of America. Riley Connor Furlong, Ryan Chia-En Lai, Andrew Liu, Gabriel Kline Ramirez and Donovan Makoa Sanders will be honored with the rank of Eagle Scout at the Troop 2 Eagle Court of Honor to be held at the LDS Stake Center in Los Angeles, California. All five Eagle candidates are Seniors at Santa Monica High School – Class of 2019.

The Eagle rank honors exemplary effort, leadership and service. Only six percent of Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle. In addition to demonstrating proficiency in first aid, citizenship, camping, swimming, emergency preparedness, and many other skills, Eagle candidates must coordinate and complete a community service project that demonstrates significant leadership abilities. Each of the Scouts being honored led a major project to improve quality of life in the community.

For his Eagle Project, Furlong built and painted a sandbox table for the University Parents Nursery School, and refurbished benches around the playground. Furlong and his team built pieces for the sandbox table with the help of staff the night before the project. The table was then assembled and painted on site. There were many benches that were splintering and were a potential safety hazard. Furlong’s project taught him about leadership, teamwork and how to plan and complete a project.

Lai’s Eagle Project benefited the Saint Monica’s Catholic School. Lai and his team trimmed a large vine while replacing bushes with plants that didn’t require as much sunlight. The vine was blocking the sidewalk while the bushes were dying due to lack of sunlight. Now it is a beautiful mini garden that doesn’t cover the sidewalk and has thriving colorful plants.

Liu’s Eagle Project consisted of reorganizing and repainting a storage container at the Gabrielino/Tongva Sacred Springs. First, Liu and his team started by taking out the contents of the container and organizing it. They continued by scraping the old paint off. Next, they applied a layer of primer, then applied the finishing coat. Not only

did Liu’s project beautify the land, but it will also serve as a “headquarters” for future landscaping/ gardening projects.

Ramirez’s Eagle Project was to clean up and restore Gabrielino/Tongva Sacred Springs. The two-day project involved over 50 community members, including Troop 2 volunteers and Tongva, Maya, and Gabrielino natives. The goal was to make the entire area a more enjoyable and beautiful place for people to visit and learn about Native American culture. This project taught him how to organize and lead a large group of people as well as how to succeed despite unexpected obstacles.

For his Eagle Project, Sanders restored the children’s playground at Santa Monica First Presbyterian Church. Sanders’ plan was to restore the soil and vegetation, install new PVC piping into the ground, replace the old irrigation system with one that would drain effectively, and completely re-soil the playground. The bark that had been there for years was replaced with rich soil; wooden planks were removed so that kids could play carefree. The kindergarteners now have a playground that is both more beautiful and water free.

The troop’s scouts contributed several hundred hours to these community service projects. Established 71 years ago, Troop 2 is one of the oldest and largest Boy Scout troops in the Western United States. Since then, Troop 2 has graduated 355 Eagle Scouts and traveled to scout camps and high adventure destinations throughout the United States. Troop 2 Scouts are known to have saved at least 64 lives.

Belly Warming Sawtelle Ramen Standouts

While a heaping bowl of ramen sounds mouth-watering all year round, the winter months make it an especially desirable meal. In many parts of the country, the only way to satisfy this craving is with a pack of Maruchan instant noodles, but luckily on the Westside, a ramen-heaven exists. The holy place in question is, of course, Sawtelle Boulevard, where in some areas three ramen houses stand within a 100-foot radius of each other. To help sort through all the noodles and broth, here are four stand-out ramen houses on Sawtelle, ranked in no particular order.

Tatsu

Tatsu may not quite be on the same level as Tsujitsa, but they still serve a mighty fine bowl of ramen. Located a hop, skip and a jump from Tsujitsa, diners are greeted at Tatsu not by a hostess but rather by a row of iPads where patrons place their orders. There are a variety of ramen options to choose from, all excellent, but the “bold” and “soul” ramens are particular standouts. The bold ramen is heavy on the garlic, heavy on the spice and will leave even the most ambitious eater feeling full. The soul ramen, while by no means light, is a bit more subtle than the bold ramen, and living up to its namesake, really does warm the soul.

Located north of Santa Monica Boulevard, away from the hustle and bustle of central Sawtelle, Shin-sen-gumi may not be on many diners’ radar. Despite being removed from the chaos, Shinsengumi delivers Hakata ramen that stands up to any place on the block. Patrons choose from a variety of sides to put in their ramen, from staples like garlic and mushrooms to lesser-seen options like flavored-egg and spicy miso paste flavor bombs. Despite the level of customization offered, the broth and noodles at Shin-sen-gumi speak for themselves, a mark of any top-notch ramen house.

Remember when I just wrote that these entries were ranked in no particular order?

Well, that was a lie. Tsujita LA Artisan Noodles, located on the corner of Sawtelle Boulevard and Missippi Avenue is considered by many to be the holy grail of ramen shops, not only on Sawtelle, not only in Los Angeles but throughout the entire United States.

Their specialty is Tsukemen ramen, with tonkatsu (pork) broth on the side of thick, perfectly al-dente noodles. Words can not do justice describing the experience of slurping down a bowl of ramen at Tsujitsa. Instead, head on over to Sawtelle and wait in line for ramen that may or may not change your life.

A bowl of ramen at Killer Noodle not only looks much different than a typical bowl of ramen, but it also tastes a whole lot different as well.

The signature dish at Killer Noodle is their Tokyo style ramen. Made with a peanut-based broth, diners are asked to choose on a scale of 1-7 both how spicy and how numbing they want their ramen to be. Killer Noodle uses sansho peppers in their broth. Packed with citrus flavor and a tongue- numbing agent, these peppers make eating a bowl of ramen at Killer Noodle not only a meal but a full-body experience.

By Grace Hiney A meal at Divino is always a pleasure as the food is terrific, the setting delightful and, better yet, you can HEAR those dining with you (which you often cannot in other restaurants). Owner Goran Milic was born in Montenegro which is just 10 hours by boat from Southern Italy where the Italian influence was made strong on his cooking.

Not only was cooking the main event in his young life but he played water polo at a competitive level for the Young Montenegrin National team. Just look around the restaurant as you wait for your meal and see all the black and white photos of the team with Goran. Why does Goran speak such good English? Because he studied English in London in 1985 and then immigrated to the United States in 1986. He loved Cal-

ifornia where he worked for ten years developing skills he needed to open his own restaurant which he and his brother, Davor, did in 1996. Divino offers authentic Tuscan cuisine. And, Chef Goran believes that continuous learning is essential, so that he continues to visit Italy and various Italian chefs as he hones his trade.

To those of us who are just diners, Goran’s sociable personality and first class service, along with crisp white linens, helpful servers and an easy to read menu make any meal at Divino special. Not only did I enjoy my dinner with my friend, Barbara, but just a day or two before I had a quick lunch with my son and his wife.

As none of us were very hungry that day, we shared a delicious little salad and a Margherita pizza with its light tomato sauce with basil and mozzarella. The $16 pizza was perfect, light, crisp and excellent.

For dinner, Barbara and I each enjoyed a glass of wine while checking the menu. We also nibbled the delicious bread with olive oil and a touch of pungent Italian balsamic vinegar. A shared salad of grilled fresh ju-

lienne vegetables in a light lemon dressing made a perfect start for $16.

Barbara was delighted with her Pollo Fantastico boneless whole chicken roasted with herbs and balsamic sauce along with special potatoes and spinach. ($35). She was thrilled that it was enough for her to take some home for lunch the next day.

My Linguine ai Frutti di Mare was equally special and delicious. The linguini pasta with its zesty tomato sauce is served with fresh clams, mussels, calamari and shrimp ($28). It too was more than enough for me so that I too could take some home.

Here, the dinner menu includes special soups such as homemade family-style minestrone ($16) and a selection of seven antipasti ranging in price from $16 to $19 for the pan seared scallops (Cappesante). There are half a dozen pizzas listed, with the various pastas all in the $26 to $28 price range.

There are two risottos along with five dinners in the $34 to $41 price category.

“Aquaman” Worth the Big Screen BEHIND THE SCREEN

By Kathryn Whitney Boole The character of Aquaman debuted in November 1941 in More Fun Comics #73. Over the years the sea-dwelling superhero has seen many different sides of his nature evolve. The current movie, James Wan’s "Aquaman", is certainly a spectacle.

His Aquaman is named Arthur and his storyline is unapologetically based on the legend of King Arthur.

The movie has its imperfections, one being that the first few minutes seem like a practice run compared to the later parts of the film. I wish the Wan had decided to re-shoot some of the opening scenes, after they had done the superb undersea work towards the end.

The sets and the world under the sea are awe-inspiring. Director Wan and cinematographer Don Burgess capture the flowing vastness of the ocean.

The writers manage to incorporate the urgency of our impending destruction of our own planet through our misuse of its oceans. Witness our lackadaisical attitude towards the trash we create, our gluttony for water, and our procrastination in dealing with the effects of human pollution.

Much of this film is beautifully conceived, so the failures to achieve realism are jarring. The

costumes look cheap and plastic, with a handful of exceptions. This could be due to materials, lighting or both. Amber Heard looks uncomfortable in hers in the beginning, though she seems to get used to it as the film goes on. The color of Amber Heard’s hair is a jarring red. I understand this is based on a comic. However live-action film is a different medium, which incorporates nature.

Even the great Nicole Kidman cannot bring a grace and ease to her costume early on, though she does an amazing job with her role of Atlanna.

There is some welcome humor, most of it emanating from Jason Momoa’s self-effacing and reluctant hero, Aquaman. I would like to have seen more. Momoa is a highly intelligent and complex actor who puts extensive research into his roles. He has his own production company, Pride of Gypsies, for which he wrote and directed the feature Road to Paloma. Momoa had already played Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

The music works – background score by composer Rupert Gregson-Williams and familiar songs inserted by the music designers. Battle scenes are too reminiscent of other comic book franchises and Star Wars, and they go on way too long. Ditto for the imaginary Sea Monsters that look like every other comic book beast– they are not needed, as the grandeur of the ocean and its natural creatures is enough of a marvel in itself.

When I was four years old my parents bought me a long roll of foot-wide blank newsprint to draw on to stop me from drawing on the walls.

The roll seemed endless and I immediately set to work drawing a story of a boy and girl who go on a daring adventure under the sea. This was my dream, so excuse me if I expect perfection of Aquaman – it’s the world that existed in my imagination. I did really enjoy the movie. It’s well worth seeing on the big screen, and now I’m looking forward to a more perfect sequel.

Projects on public land necessitate the fullest range of environmental analysis as to impacts, disclosure as to impacts, and ways to lessen impacts, the greatest amount of accurate and complete information to facilitate public involvement, and ultimately a public vote. The City has already set that precedent for a public vote on the airport’s land uses – land that residents own. We expect no less here.

SMCLC and SMa.r.t call on the City to require the EIR to be revised and recirculated and to include alternatives that actually are of significantly reduced size and impacts to the project in addition to the overlooked SM.a.r.t “reduced project” proposal that should result in a reasonable project under CEQA that meets the City’s objectives under the Downtown Community Plan.

from page 8 uses that they aren’t really alternatives; 2) insufficiently analyzes the impacts of the various alternatives so that no reasonable comparisons or differentiations among them can be made; and 3) fails to include the SMa.r.t. “reduced project” alternative that includes a 75 percent open space town square that the Council directed be studied.

While the EIR did look at two “public park” scenarios, the remainder of the project alternatives include heavily built-out scenarios that generate impacts similar to the project, and what’s worse, impacts that can’t be mitigated to insignificant levels.

How did this happen? The Council told the developer at the “float up” to reduce 100,000 SF of the project’s 200,000 SF of office use and then transfer most of what was lost back into the project’s other uses – hotel, residential, retail.

This direction from Council and the City Manager appears to have pre-determined the project before an EIR was even done. The EIR appears to have followed suit and impermissibly poses alternatives that are too similar to the project to significantly reduce the impacts from those of the project.

This, of course, defeats the whole purpose of an EIR — to study project alternatives which would have fewer negative environmental impacts, such as water, traffic, parking and infrastructure to make a reasonable and better choice.

the public — to be able to advocate for it, and to be able to weigh it against what the Council approves in determining whether to support or challenge the decision made.

Several community members spoke against the renewal, mostly referring to recent cases regarding OPCC, a shelter also referred to as The People Concern, which LAHSA and others have as noted issues with health and sanitation as well as safety and training for staff members.

“My heart goes out to...people who have not gotten high-quality care in the system,” Cole replied. “The system is in flux, the system is held together by chewing gum and chicken water, the system is not designed to deal with 56,000 people in crisis, and we’re doing the best we can.”

Cole advised against the city pursuing any additional investigation, stating that the findings would likely be the same as that of LAHSA. “I’m not denying that there are problems at OPCC, there are problems that are endemic to this challenge of trying to provide high quality services,” Cole said. “The reality is that all of the ways that we do business are changing and will need to change.”

In response to the overwhelming concern regarding OPCC, staff was directed to find a better way for complaints to go into correcting problematic processes.

Staff will return on April 23 with a proposed ten-year budget.

historical significance. They asserted that the buildings had been modified and were not well-kept. They pointed out that any change in Santa Monica should be welcomed.

In a rare turn of events, City Council ruled against the reccomendation of City Staff, siding with the Landmark Comission and designating the District.

The city staff hired their own consultant and came to the conclusion that the proposed district did not appear to satisfy the criteria for designation. They also concluded that no evidence was found to indicate any former owners or occupants of the properties were associated with any important historic events, including Waldo Cowan and Joseph J. Rowe.

Councilmember Kevin McKeown, however, reflected on his own experience with the 11th Street Bungalows and questioned the staff’s reccomendation against the designation.

“Because 11th Street is a relatively flat way to get back to the north side of the city, for almost 43 years I’ve been riding a bicycle up 11th street quite regularly. These bungalows have always caught my attention and always caught my eye, so what are the criteria by which staff are working here?”

Susan Suntree, a resident of the bungalows for over thirty years and Friends of 11th Street co-chair, spoke at the hearing and responded to the city staff’s concerns.

“No other district has such a concentration of citizens who were at the cutting edge at their time and continue to influence us today,” Suntree begins. “Waldo Cowan built some of the first working middle-class homes as the city expanded eastward in the early 20th century. His four surviving bungalows in our district are among the oldest bungalows in Santa Monica, including a 115- year old bungalow.

Over a hundred years ago, Cowan served on the first bike path committee. He was a wellknown adopter of the automobile, a very early proponent of urban agriculture and served on the Santa Monica school board.” Suntree continues, “He served on election boards and was a founding member of the first Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, among many other civic contributions. Joseph J. Rowe was a master designer and builder. He’s praised for his excellent design, materials and workmanship.

Debbie Mahdessian, who grew up in Santa Monica and purchased her home in the cluster in 1996, also spoke at the hearing about th rich history of these homes.

“I remember looking at it and telling my husband that I remember this house from when I was growing up.” Mahdessian said, “People are constantly saying how much they love our house, and we’ll invite them into the yard and talk to them. People have come who lived in our house in the ‘70s. I feel like this area is a visual history that we’re passing down. It might not be the prettiest, but it was never meant to be that because it was for the working class. It breaks my heart to think that these wouldn’t garner the same attention or protection that flashier places do. When these are gone, they’re gone. And having grown up here, I remember a lot more of these places

Planning Commissioner Diane Miller joined as co-chair alongside Suntree after being invited to Suntree’s home. “She [Susan] took me on the walking tour and started explaining all the architectural merit of these Southern California bungalows, why they were built a certain way, the historical personages who lived in the houses, and the fact that these were built by and for working middle-class families.” Miller continues, “When I heard all of this and started to look and stare at these houses, I actually fell in love. These magnificent homes that are disappearing as

we all know due to the gentrification, evoke a bygone era and time of sweetness when families played together, ate together. This shows what Santa Monica was like when it started out being a city.”

With the most difficult part of the journey behind her, Suntree reflects on the important role the community played in the designation. “This was a group effort and a group win that would not have happened without public support. I am thankful to every single person who showed up, emailed, spoke, told their neighbors and weighed in. The public is powerful when they find their voice.”
