GLAAD Receives Governor’s Award at the Primetime Emmys

The Award Celebrates Decades of GLAAD’s Impactful Work On November 14, 2023, the Television Academy announced that the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization would be awarded the Governor’s Award at the Primetime Emmys ceremony. Frank Scherma, Chair of the Television Academy, said in a press release, “Television shapes our society and influences dialogue that increases understanding and acceptance, making GLAAD’s work so important to the LGBTQ community to legislative bodies and to the public,” said Frank Scherma, Chair of the Television Academy. “Through its education and advocacy programs, it has had a culture-changing impact.” Governors Award Selection Committee Chair Kim Taylor-Coleman stated, “GLAAD’s diligence and influence are especially critical in today’s world as we’re seeing a flood of anti-LGBTQ legislation being proposed across the country. We are honored to recognize GLAAD’s

commitment to equality for all.” GLAAD’s President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, accepted the award and said, in a press release prior to the ceremony, “This tremendous honor from the Television Academy is a testament to the historic and impactful work of GLAAD’s founders, board members, and staff over the past four decades as well as the LGBTQ executives, creators and talent who are telling authentic LGBTQ stories on television. At a time when our world seems more divided, and media plays an outsized role in shaping culture, television has the unique power to tell human stories that grow empathy and acceptance. This honor is just the latest example of how the Television Academy plays a pivotal role in ensuring accurate and diverse storytelling, which educates, entertains, and enlightens.” GLAAD received the Governor’s Award at the Primetime Emmys ceremony on January 15, and a post on their social media said, “The Board of Governors of the Television Academy may, when warranted, recognize an individual, company, or organization that has made a profound, transformational, and long-lasting contribution to the arts and/or science of television by presenting them with the Governors Award. Thank you to our founders and all the LGBTQ and ally creatives, advocates, and talent who have contributed to our mission.”

West Hollywood Launches Innovative Multifamily Property Inspections for Neighborhood Enhancement Proactive Program Ensures Compliance with Municipal Code Standards

The City of West Hollywood’s Neighborhood and Business Safety (NBS) Division Code Enforcement team is dedicated to upholding neighborhood livability by responding to community complaints and concerns. To further enhance neighborhood standards, the NBS Division is introducing a proactive and systematic inspection initiative for multifamily

properties, commencing in February 2024. The proactive pilot program, initially focusing on the Eastside and progressively moving west, aims to conduct inspections of multifamily properties every three years. The goal is to ensure compliance with the West Hollywood Municipal Code standards for maintaining rental housing properties. Multifamily properties, defined as buildings with three or more units, will be subject to thorough inspections. Code Enforcement Officers, part of the proactive multifamily inspection team, will concentrate on exterior property conditions and common areas during the inspections. This includes aspects such as landscape, parking areas, paint, fences, and common spaces like hallways, courtyards, staircases, and elevators. Additionally, officers will be vigilant for potential vacation (short-term)

rental activity. As part of the outreach process, tenants will be informed about the opportunity to voluntarily schedule inspections within the interior of their units. Interior inspections will only occur upon tenant request and will address habitability concerns such as plumbing issues, lack of heat, and malfunctioning safety alarms. Furthermore, multifamily properties with specific unit counts will be examined for compliance with the City’s Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO). This involves ensuring proper notices regarding emergency contacts, eviction protections, and rent limits are posted. Tenants interested in scheduling inspections during the pilot program may contact the NBS Division at (323) 450-7115 or multifamilyinspections@weho.org. The

proactive multifamily inspection team will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding holidays). Community members with concerns related to noise, property maintenance, vacant properties, construction, zoning, or public right-of-way impediments are encouraged to submit a Service Request through the City’s website or Official App. Complaints and questions can also be directed to the Code Enforcement hotline at (323) 848-6516 or code@weho.org. For further information on the proactive multifamily inspection pilot program, contact Eugene Alper, Code Enforcement Supervisor, at (323) 848-6432 or ealper@weho.org. TTY users may call (323) 848-6496.

UNITE HERE Local 110 Signs Historic Agreements with Three New Hotels Major Victory for Hotel Workers as More Hotels Sign Tentative Agreements By Dolores Quintana Hotel workers from Sheraton Universal, LINE Hotel, and 1 Hotel West Hollywood have joined Fairmont Miramar Santa Monica and 24 other hotels in signing tentative agreements with UNITE HERE Local 11. Maria Del Carmen, a room attendant at Sheraton Universal, expressed determination, saying, “We never gave up and fought hard to win what so many other hotel workers now have. I hope workers at our sister property, the LA Grand, and other hotels soon join us.” Once the contract is ratified, it will maintain the same provisions as the previous tentative agreements, including unprecedented wage increases aligned with the soaring cost of housing, affordable family healthcare, humane workloads, safe staffing, improved pension increases, and language enhancements. The language improvements include Equal Justice

provisions, facilitating access to union jobs for formerly incarcerated individuals, and providing unprecedented protections for immigrant workers. Kurt Petersen, co-president of UNITE HERE Local 11, commented on the growing support for the historic agreement but expressed disappointment with Aimbridge-

operated hotels, such as Hyatt Regency LAX and Pasadena Hilton, for not listening to their workers. Aimbridge Hospitality operates hotels like Hyatt Regency LAX, Sheraton Park Anaheim, Hilton Pasadena, Doubletree DTLA, Doubletree San Pedro, Holiday Inn LAX, Santa Monica Hampton Inn,

Santa Monica Courtyard Marriott, and Blackstone-owned Aloft and Fairfield El Segundo. Along with Ensemble-operated Hotel Maya and Hyatt Place Pasadena, these hotels continue to resist meeting the new hotel contract standard.

Advocacy Groups Petition the United Nations, Citing the Human Rights Crisis in Texas UN Urged to Intervene in Texas Over Alleged LGBTQ+ Rights Violations Equality Texas, the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, and the University of Texas School of Law’s Human Rights

Clinic are joining forces to petition the United Nations (UN) over alleged human rights crises in Texas. At least seven laws targeting LGBTQ+ individuals have triggered this call for international intervention, as reported by the Austin American Statesman. The 35-page letter of allegations argues that both the federal government and Texas have violated international human rights obligations, specifically focusing on laws passed since 2019. The petition contends that Texas is “disregarding its responsibilities” by enacting legislation that undermines LGBTQ+ experiences and attempts to erase

them from public life. National and state advocacy groups are turning to the United Nations, urging intervention in response to what they deem a human rights crisis in Texas. Highlighting seven laws targeting LGBTQ+ individuals, the coalition, including Equality Texas and the ACLU, signed a 35-page letter outlining alleged violations of international human rights obligations. The petition points to legislation affecting privacy, health, education, religious freedom, expression, and equal treatment. Advocates hope the UN will demand Texas

repeal these laws, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for international intervention to protect LGBTQ+ rights

In another abrupt restaurant closure on New Year’s Day, the scene outside the West Hollywood IHOP on Wednesday morning painted a desolate picture, with an empty parking lot echoing the absence of its usual 24-hour hustle and bustle. Within the restaurant, remnants of the holiday season lingered as a Christmas wreath adorned the wall above the vacant counter and kitchen area. However, a note posted on the entrance door delivered the unequivocal message to patrons: the holiday cheer had come to an end. The announcement succinctly stated, “Closing at 1 pm on New Year’s Day. Thank you,” as it greeted those who approached 8461 Santa Monica Blvd. To further confirm the closure, a voicemail message provided unfortunate confirmation, guiding customers to redirect their dining plans to the Hollywood location situated at 7006 Sunset Blvd. A recorded message expressed regret, addressing valued customers with an apology for any inconvenience. It confirmed the closure of the West Hollywood IHOP, delivering the unfortunate news that the shutters were down permanently, as disclosed by an employee in a conversation with the WeHo Times.
