Public Outcry Only Temporarily Saves Los Angeles LGBT Center’s STD, HIV Services The temporary agreement restores funding through the end of March.

The temporary agreement restores funding through the end of March. The Los Angeles LGBT Center announced today that it has reached a temporary agreement with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health (DPH) to re-

Non-medical residential care, for persons 60 & older unable to live alone. • 24 Hour Monitoring & Supervision • Medication Assistance • Bedridden & Hospice Services • Neurocognitive Impairment Care • Assistance with Personal Care • Transportation Assistance • Companionship & Engaging Activities • Housekeeping Services • And Much More...

instate funding for vital STD and HIV services for the LGBT community. “The Los Angeles LGBT community saved the day. From phone calls to tweets and emails, their voices were heard and ultimately saved these vital services for our community,” Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Lorri L. Jean said. “It’s a potent reminder of the strength, tenacity, and resilience of our community.” The agreement, reached overnight, comes one day after the announcement that free STD and HIV testing and STD treatment funded by the County would end at the Center due to funding cuts by DPH. The subsequent public outcry and activism through phone calls to DPH and its director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, led to the temporary funding agreement. The temporary agreement restores funding through the end of March. “Services were saved and are continuing—for now. That is crucial,” Jean said. “And, between now and the end of March,

we will work with Dr. Ferrer and the Department of Public Health to find a longterm solution that ensures care and treatment for our community. We are hopeful, but nothing is guaranteed. Clearly our community stands at the ready to re-engage should this become necessary.” Los Angeles is in the midst of raging STD epidemics, with infections continuing to rise. Up to 90 percent of certain STDs have no symptoms, which means people can be passing them to their partners without realizing it. Over the last five years, there has been a 98 percent increase in primary and secondary syphilis; 81 percent increase in gonorrhea; and 25 percent increase in chlamydia cases in Los Angeles County. Alarmingly, the epidemic disproportionately impacts communities hardest hit by health inequities and stigma, including young gay and bisexual men, women, people of color, and transgender people. Treating Abdominal Injuries at Body Rhythm Shevi Baruch on helping patients with diastasis recti BY STAFF WRITER With more than 3 million cases diagnosed each year, diastasis recti is one of the more common abdominal injuries suffered by both men and women in America today. Put most simply, diastasis recti is the partial or complete separation of the “six-pack” muscles, which meet at the midline of your stomach. It is most common in women who are over 35 and older men with abdominal obesity. Diastasis recti generally isn’t dangerous and it can often be successfully treated with corrective exercise and strength training of all the core muscles which usually involves pelvic floor and deep stomach muscle exercises. Over the past 20 years, Shevi Baruch, founder of Body Rhythm, has helped a myriad of clients with diastasis Recti. Based in Santa Monica, Body Rhythm offers clients a unique combination of programs tailored to meet their individual fitness needs. According to Shevi, men and women can both have diastasis recti. The most common occurrence is during and after pregnancy, when the uterus stretches the muscles to accommodate the growing baby. Another cause is lifting heavy weights incor-

rectly. Common symptoms include a bump or ridge extending down the middle of the abdomen, lower back pain, poor posture and for some people, constipation and bloating. “A typical situation is when a postpartum woman endeavors to get back into shape,” Shevi said. “She arrives at the studio months to years after having given birth. She has lost the pregnancy weight, but her abdominals are not responding to the exercises she has been doing.” That is when it is important to check for a diastasis recti because failing to correctly diagnose the condition can lead to a further separation of the abdominal wall if the mother is performing traditional abdominal crunch to get her abs back into shape.” To diagnose the condition Shevi explains that she will have a client lay on their back, feet flat and knees bent (photo 1) “Support their head with one

hand and curl up,” Shevi continued. “Place your other hand fingers on top, above and bellow of the belly button, to check if you can press your fingers down (photo 2). If you can press more then one finger down, you may have a diastasis recti. While there are certain exercises that people with diastasis Recti should avoid, there are others that could potentially help to close the gap. Shevi explained, “Those exercises focus primarily on the pelvic floor, back muscles, transverse abdominis and the psoas.” Shevi recommends to her clients to perform those exercises at home three times a day for one to six months. “In most cases after few months the abdominal gap will close. Sometimes it takes only few weeks to see the abdominals flatten. Then the client’s program is revised and now they can perform any abdominal exercise including those that

include head lift and curl up,” Shevi added. Shevi’s unique ability to understand the body is what allows her to help her clients through different conditions. “I always take into consideration the person that enters the studio, his or her challenges and strengths. In a Gyrotonic group class, I look for a common ground for everyone so the class will challenge and benefit each participant. Each class includes a detail to work on while the movement is flowing with rhythm. Every class is joyful.” For more information about Body Rhythm Pilates & Gyrotonic call (310) 255-1177 visit TheBodyRhythm.com, follow them on Facebook and Twitter or visit them at 2114 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica CA, 90403.

Groundbreaking Conference for LGBT Widows, Widowers in L.A.

Renowned Designer, Author, Advocate Nate Berkus to Give Keynote Address

On Saturday, February 29, the Los Angeles LGBT Center will host an innovative conference known as Camp Widow to serve members of the LGBTQ+ community who have experienced the death of a spouse or partner. “Losing someone you share your life with changes you forever, and I know firsthand how difficult that can be,” keynote speaker Nate Berkus said. “I feel privileged to be sharing my experience and personal journey at this year’s conference.” In 2004, Berkus’ partner Fernando Bengoechea was swept away by a catastrophic tsunami in Sri Lanka during the couple’s trip. According to news reports, the tsunami, which also devastated parts of Thailand and Indonesia, killed hundreds of thousands of people—many of them still missing. The highly anticipated daylong event will be held at the Center’s Anita May Rosenstein Campus. It will feature

workshops, discussions, and practical tools and resources produced by nonprofit organization Soaring Spirits International. “Before marriage equality, many LGBT couples kept their relationships hidden as they endured discrimination and experienced the stigma associated with the AIDS crisis, when compared to their heterosexual counterparts,” said Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Director of Senior Services Kiera Pollock, M.S.W. “What Camp Widow will bring to the Center is the validation that all widows and widowers matter, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Everyone who has lost a partner, spouse, or significant other deserve to have a community of support to grieve—and then thrive.” The Camp Widow Los Angeles event will take place Saturday, February 29 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Anita May Rosenstein Campus. The event costs $50, but financial assistance may be available for income-qualified attendees. To register, visit campwidow.org/camp/los-angeles . STAR GAZING

ARIES (March 21-April 19) The end of this working week will delight Aries. You received a high opinion of your professionalism, and your boss has promised that you will be sent on a prestigious business trip. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus will spend today in high spirits, not knowing what boredom or fatigue is. Everything will inspire you, even colleagues you did not like in the past. The only unpleasant episode of the day comes in the evening, before going to bed. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Today for Geminis’ will include no major victories. The only highlight of today for you personally is to purchase a new accessory. Everything that happens to you afterward will be concentrated around this purchase. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers today will not be able to free themselves from unrest. First, you will worry that your new boss is too strict for you, and in the evening you will be disappointed by someone close to you. You will ask this person to help, hinting that you yourself have helped him many times in the past. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos today will gain an understanding of the reasons for their difficulties in the sphere of love. In the evening, you go on a date, mentally thinking of it as the start of a very serious and lasting relationship. But no, these relationships never hit it off, and the reason is your excessive self-confidence. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgos on this day should not overestimate the strength of their immunity. Do not forget that the window is cold January, which means you cannot leave the house without a hat and heavy coat. Caution should be shown in financial affairs.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libras on this day will attract great interest from some high-ranking person. He even promises to assist your professional life, but you do not need to be too grateful. To get a higher professional rank or a new position, you do not need patrons, but new accomplishments at work. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpions will refuse to understand the intentions of someone close to them. Planning for leisure, you will only think about how to get rid of the fatigue accumulated at work. As a result, you will veto the wish of your household to organize a big party. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarius will spend this Saturday as if the weekend is unending. You will be able to keep upbeat mood both during the daytime while you work around the house, and in the evening when a busy meal starts at your best friend’s house. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns today should be as careful as possible carrying out current projects. If you allow yourself to rush in this task, the risk increases that you will commit a number of very large errors. You can fully relax only when this day is over. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius will take in all the events of today with melancholy. Knowing that your day will be exactly the same (at work), you will cease to rejoice that the long-awaited weekend is almost here. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces today should not boldly experiment with their appearance. After doing so, you will experience nothing but disappointment and regret. Instead of changing something in your appearance, try out small reforms in your personal space.
