YEAR OF THE QUEER

WeHo, Long Beach Earn Top Marks in 2019 Equality Index 2019 was a great year for the LGBTQ+ communities in West Hollywood and Long Beach.

Both cities earned a score of 100 on the recently released Human Rights Campaign’s 2019 Municipal Equality Index. The MEI is a nationwide evaluation of municipal laws that affect the LGBTQ+ community. “Eight consecutive years of receiving a top score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index is something the City of West Hollywood is incredibly proud of and not something we take for granted,” said West Hollywood Mayor John D’Amico. “As we know, the current administration is attempting to dismantle legislation that protects the equality and dignity of the LGBTQ community.” On top of a perfect score of 100,WeHo also

received 17 bonus points for specific services that help LGBT youth, seniors and homeless folks; programs for people with HIV/AIDS; and services for transgender people. Long Beach received 11 bonus points for supportive services including nondiscrimination policies in City employment, workplace inclusivity and the availability of domestic partner benefits for City employees. “Long Beach is, and will always be, a place where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can live, work and love,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said, as reported by the Long Beach Post. HRC’s annual report rates over 500 municipalities from each state for their policies and services that support the LGBTQ+ people who live and work there. MEI launched in 2012. “We cannot rest for a moment in protecting our hard-won rights as LGBTQ people,” D’Amico said. “The City of West Hollywood will never stop fighting for our community members here and for LGBTQ people everywhere.”

YEAR OF THE QUEER

Long Beach Drag Queen Jewels Awarded Key to the City The first drag queen in Long Beach history received a Key to the City last week. Jewels is a household name for most Long Beachers. From her residency at Hamburger Mary’s, to hosting the Long Beach Pride Parade in May, Jewels sparkles across all of the City. Jewels received the honor during the Tuesday, Dec. 17 City Council meeting. “It fills me with immense pride to be recognized by our community with a Key to the City,” Jewels said in a statement. “ As someone who has called Long Beach my home for over 20 years, I have been so happy to bring smiles to so many in the city though comedy, performance and art. I love this city and the unique people in it.” Jewels is recognized for her philanthropy and volunteer work for several local charities and programs, including the Long Beach LGBTQ Center, the AIDS Food Store, the C.A.R.E. Program and the Long Beach Imperial Court. She has previously received

honors including the Rick Ford Humanitarian Award from the Imperial Court and the Community Icon Award from the Center. Long Beach City Council is held on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in the Civic Chambers at 411 W. Ocean Blvd.

2019 Reflections from LA Pride Executive Director

With 2020 on the horizon, we can’t help but look back at all the progress and success this year has brought.

5.75 in.

For LA Pride, 2019 brought more expansion and inclusion, specifically in the form of the free “Pride on the Boulevard” festival on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Christopher Street West – the nonprofit in charge of LA Pride – also hosted its first opening ceremony to kick off Pride Weekend. Some more Important firsts: CSW launched a new PLATform (Policy, Leadership, and Training) program for the trans community. Lead by board members Alexandra Magallon and Johanna Padilla, the program calumniated in a graduation cere-

mony during the annual Trans Brunch. 2019 was also the first year that the Pride Parade was live broadcasted and livein. streamed10.0 on ABC7.

“All of these key milestones together explain why LA Pride has been recently recognized for contributing a positive economic impact on West Hollywood's busi-

nesses and well beyond across all of Los Angeles,” CSW Executive Director Madonna Cacciatore said in a recent e-blast. Projecting to next year, 2020 will be the 50th anniversary of LA Pride. “So, as you can imagine, LA Pride 2020 will be bigger and better than ever,” Cacciatore said. LA Pride 2020 will see an expansion of the free “Pride on the Boulevard” event, welcoming local businesses and programs to offer info and services to attendees. 2020 will also see growth in grants and scholarship programs to ensure that more folks can attend and support Pride Week. CSW provided ,000 free tickers to nonprofits, and offered grants, scholarships and donations to support local LGBTQ+ college students. Small queer businesses and other small nonprofits. “As you can see, next year is going to be a big year for the entire LA Pride team. That's why it's important to take this time, during the holidays, to rest up and recharge for what's going to be a truly remarkable and moving year ahead,” Cacciatore said.

Open Letter to FB Demands Removal of Ads Attacking HIV Medication The ads for a lawsuit are described as “factually inaccurate”

Dozens of LGBTQ+, HIV and public health organizations have signed an open letter calling on Facebook to remove law firm ads that promote “factually inaccurate” side effects of HIV-prevention medication Truvada, a type of PrEP prescription. “The signers of this letter, including members of Facebook’s LGBTQ Network of Support, request that Facebook and Instagram remove the advertisements and also publicly address the misinformation that the platforms allowed to spread,” the letter states. Various law firms used the social media platform’s targeting advertising capabilities to recruit LGBTQ+ med for a class-action lawsuit against Gilead Science, the manufacturer of Truvada. “This issue goes beyond misinformation, as it puts real people’s lives in imminent danger,” the letter states. “The U.S. Cen-

ters for Disease Control and Prevention reports that when taken daily, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV from sex or injection drug use.” The open letter states that lawsuit advertised claims bone density and kidney issues, despite numerous studies supporting the safety of these preventative drugs. According to the CDC, PrEP reduces the risk of contracting HIV from sex by 99% when taken correctly. “By allowing these advertisements to persist on their platforms, Facebook and Instagram are convincing at-risk individuals to avoid PrEP, invariably leading to avoidable HIV infections,” the letter states. “You are harming public health.” NBC News reported that a Facebook spokesperson said that the company values its “work with LGBTQ groups” and both welcomes and seeks out the community’s input. “While these ads do not violate our ad policies nor have they been rated false by third-party fact-checkers, we’re always examining ways to improve and help these key groups better understand how we ap-

ply our policies,” the spokesperson wrote, according to NMC News. The open letter states that the signers reached out to Facebook about the advertisements, but an agreement could not be reached. “Given the history of how our community was met by deadly indifference during the early years of the AIDS crisis, the refusal to take action is deeply concerning,” the letter states. Since a resolution was not reached, immediate action must be taken by Facebook to ameliorate the harm which has already been caused to those who may be seeking preventative treatment against HIV.“ The co-signatories of the open letter listed the following demands: • Facebook and Instagram immediately remove the advertisements outlined above that are harming public health. • Facebook and Instagram be transparent with users and the LGBTQ community on their advertising policy around misinformation which states that “in certain circumstances” Facebook prohibits ads that include “claims debunked by organizations

with particular expertise.” • Facebook commits to a review and potential update of current advertising policies to prevent false or misleading public health statements from reaching users. Co-signers of the December 9 open letter included GLAAD, APLA Health, the Trevor Project and dozens more. To read the full open letter, visit https:// www.glaad.org/blog/open-letter-facebook

1. Season of Love (Tello Films) – This movie follows tight-knit group of queer-identifying women navigating adventures of love, life and friendship during the holiday season. Essentially, it is a funny Holiday RomCom in the truest for – plus the aded bonus of lesbian plot lines. “It centers the lives of Queer Women in a way that we rarely see; their dreams, successes, mishaps, friendships, and romances. It does this without falling into the many tropes that I am tired of being the limited lens through which our community is portrayed,” actress Jessica Clark said in an interview. “We’re just as funny, ambitious, messy, loving and silly as anyone else… duh.” 2. Let It Snow (Netflix) – What is

essentially a quintessential holiday movie, but with a lesbian twist! A snowstorm hits a small town on Christmas Eve, affecting lives and futures of several high school students. 3. Merrily Happily Whatever (Netflix) – This sitcom is the campy, laugh-track-using-binge-all-weekend you need. Plus, in Episode 3, a character comes out as a lesbian on Christmas Day and everything is fine. What a gift! 4. Wynonna Earp (SyFy) – For those in the “Wynonna Earp” fandom, we already know and love the queerness innate to this show. As a special gift to us, the Christmas Episode in Season 3 is both incredibly sweep and very dramatic – as all good Christmas fodder should be. And of course, all the cute lesbian holiday cuteness between Waverly and Nicole makes our hearts swoon. 5. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix) – A Trans holiday story complete with magic and horror, this is one holiday episode you do not want to miss. Christmas magic allows Susie to dress as an elf to present as Mal and explore the male gender.

EQUAL REPRESENTATION

Hallmark Apologizes, Reinstates Commercials Featuring Same-Sex Couple Hallmark Channel faced a wave of social backlash after its parent company – Crown Media Family Networks – quietly removed commercials featuring a same-sex couple. On Sunday, December 15, Hallmark released a press release stating Crown Media made the “wrong decision” to stop airing wedding planning company Zola’s commercials. The decision happened after pressure

from anti-LGBTQ group One Million Moms. GLAAD then created a petition that urged Hallmark to reinstate the ads. The petition stated that the decision to remove the series of six commercials that had been airing since December 2 was discriminatory and hypocritical, considering the company “recently stated they are open to holiday movies featuring LGBTQ characters.” “The Crown Media team has been agonizing over this decision as we’ve seen the hurt it has unintentionally caused,” said Mike Perry, President and CEO of Hallmark Cards, Inc. “…Our mission is rooted in helping all people connect, celebrate traditions, and be inspired to capture meaningful moments in their lives. Anything that detracts from this purpose is not who we are. We are truly sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused.” The press release stated that Hallmark will be working with GLAAD to better represent the LGBTQ+ community. “Hallmark is, and always has been, committed to diversity and inclusion – both in our workplace as well as the products and

Tussauds Wax Museum. Have you ever been to a wax museum? It is such a fun experience! Have you ever taken a child to one? Even better! Our 8-year-old was absolutely delighted, trying to recognize the dozens of celebrities and mimicking their poses. It was a cool and interactive way to spend the afternoon! 3. WE LOVED – All that MGM had to offer the whole family. From all the rides at the Adventuredome, to Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at The Mirage, to the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, it was enough to keep our family busy for several days. 4. WE LOVED – All the Food! For foodies like my partner and I, Vegas is a great food destination – and the holidays are no exception. We had a prix fix dinner at STK in the Cosmopolitan hotel. Let me tell you, they pulled out all the stops! Our dessert was lit on fire, people! Does it get any more lit than that? 5. WE LOVED – There’s so much to do off the Strip. We were able to take a local bus from our hotel to both the Smith Center to watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and to the Discovery Children’s Museum right next door. The Museum might have been our daughter’s favorite part of the trip — she’s already asking when we can go back. 6. WE HATED – I know it wouldn’t quite be Vegas without all the cigarette smoke, but this was by far the most unpleasant adjustment for the trip. Even family hotels reeked of stale smoke. Our daughter began holding her breath trough the casino portions of hotels. Not the most fun. 7. WE HATED – This probably goes without being said, but as soon as the sun goes down on on the Strip, the daytime family-friendliness quickly recedes too. Be advised. 8. WE HATED – Where did all my gambling money go?! You sneak off to the slots inside the White Castle – of all places – for literally five minutes, and suddenly all your pocket money is gone. Oh, well – such is Vegas. 9. WE HATED – We thought we were being clever by avoiding the peak season of Sin City, but as it turns out, SO MANY other people had the same idea. Everything was so crowded, all the time. So hang on tight to your little ones and be ready to do some expert stroller weaving. 10. WE HATED – Going back to reality is always a mixed bag. Yes, we couldn’t wait to see our kitties and sleep in our own beds, but are you ever really ready to face the daily grind again? Until the next LGBTQ+ Family Vacation it is!

LOS ANGELES 11 STAR GAZING By Samuel Prince

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Aries will not immediately realize that the five-day working period has finally almost ended. You will not have a plan ready on how to spend this evening, and therefore you will willingly support all the initiatives of your best friend (aka second half). TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus on this day will be very picky about the little things in your current project. For this task, you work longer than you expected, but it will bring you tangible benefits. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini today will be caught unaware by some sensational news. You will not be emotionally prepared for the fact that your former boss resigned from his position, and that another person will soon take his place. However, when you see your new leader, you will breathe a sigh of great relief. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers on this day will be able to perfectly relax body and spirit. Immediately after work, you will go to a party at the home of your best friend, and a little later this event will move to the nearest sauna. You will return home by midnight, collapse on the sofa, fall asleep and sleep like a rock. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) To Leos, this Friday will bring both pleasant and exciting experiences. You will be delighted with the report cards of your children (or the children of one of your relatives). At the same time, you will not like the news that the school is organizing another fundraiser for some “important” event. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgos on this day should not be too hasty in making important decisions about their family’s future. Do not reject the idea proposed by your partner in marriage, since you will gain more from this move than lose. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libras will find Friday to be extremely uneventful. Your day will be limited to a few obligatory affairs and poor rest in front of the TV. Somewhat dissipating the dull atmosphere of this day is the visit of one of your close neighbors. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios will require universal obedience. Demonstrating such despotism, you will not achieve what you so eagerly sought. In order to get others to fulfill your requests, you must behave not as a tyrant, but as a diplomat. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarians will delve deeply into a subject that is not related to their main profession. Perhaps it’s about some newfangled trend, which you will be introduced to by the Internet, or about a new hobby. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns today will not think about what impression their appearance makes on others. You will put emphasis not on beauty, but on the convenience of your wardrobe, knowing that you will have to work in very crowded conditions. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius will have a chance to win at the casino or by betting on the lottery. You will immediately have a powerful temptation to go and spend all your winnings on a bunch of small purchases. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces on this day will not resist the temptation to spend a little more than their budget allowed them. You will find yourself within a luxurious entertaining establishment, and you will be accompanied by a person who you do not want to look stupid in front of.
