Formerly known as the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride, the new and improved Long Beach Pride – the organization in charge of producing the Pride Parade & Festival in Long Beach – is rolling out a new identity.

Not only has its name been updated, but the 36-year-old 501(c)3 nonprofit revealed earlier this week its new logo, mission statement and website in preparation for a 2020 relaunch.

The 37th Annual Long Beach Pride Festival & Parade is a three-day event, starting with a free Teen Pride celebration on May 15, with a DJ, dancing and performances in a safe, chaperoned youth-only environment.

A two-day waterfront festival will span May 16 and 17, offering live music, community

programming, and food and drinks from local eateries, with the annual parade happening May 17.

As part of its commitment to offering attendees an entertainment-filled weekend, Long Beach Pride is planning an enhanced festival experience in partnership with the event production company JJ|LA, which produces Los Angeles Pride and produced the two-day Pride Island music festival featuring headliner Madonna at the 2019 WorldPride NYC, among other nationally and internationally recognized events.

Grand Opening of Los Angeles LGBT Center’s New Campus

The Los Angeles LGBT Center recently opened the doors of Center South, a 5,500-square-foot community space located at 2313 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., near Leimert Park.

The location of this new facility signifies the first-ever expansion of the world’s largest LGBT organization into South Los Angeles and champions its long-term commitment to care for LGBT people living throughout the city.

All of Center South’s programs and services will be provided to everyone for free or at low cost with a focus on serving the needs of young gay and bisexual men of color ages 12 to 29. According to the 2017 Los Angeles County Annual HIV Surveillance Report, South Los Angeles had the second highest rate of HIV diagnoses in the county. The rate continues to rise among young Black and Latino gay and bisexual men, and the rate among Black cisgender women are slowly increasing.

“Leimert Park has a thriving community of LGBTQ people of color, and I would like to welcome the Los Angeles LGBT Center to South Los Angeles as they continue their 50-year-plus history of life-changing and life-saving work,” Los Angeles Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson said. “The Center has provided safe spaces across L.A. for decades, and young Black and Latinx gay and bi

ing the ribbon cutting ceremony, guests toured the facility and reveled in the daylong festivity which included food, refreshments, giveaways, a resource fair, and entertainment.

“We’re thrilled to be opening Center South, and we’re proud to be doing so with wonderful partners: Bienestar Human Services, Black AIDS Institute, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles,

and The Wall Las Memorias Project.Together, we will serve a wider array of folks here than we are now doing separately,” Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Lorri L. Jean said.“Most importantly, among our areas of focus will be the people who are most vulnerable for new HIV infections: young gay and bisexual Black and Latino men and transgender women of color. We intend for Center South to be an especially welcoming place for them.”

Funded in part by the County Department of Public Health, Center South addresses the societal and health needs of LGBT people of color living in South Los Angeles by providing comprehensive programs and services, such as HIV testing; access to PrEP and PEP services; housing case management; mental health services; and a drop-in safe space which can also be used to host community events. A CyberCenter computer lab comprised of a new printer and eight new Lenovo desktop computers loaded with Office 2016 and Windows 10 software was generously funded by the David Bohnett Foundation.

“Today is the realization of a dream of many years, but this is just the beginning,” Jean said.

“By working with our partner organizations and local community leaders, I have no doubt that, together, we will ensure that Center South becomes a vibrant, vital, and beloved part of our South Los Angeles community.”

A POSTHUMOUS PARDON

Honoring Gay Rights & Civil Rights Activist Bayard Rustin

On this day in history 67 years ago, gay civil rights organizer Bayard Rustin was arrested on a discriminatory, anti-gay “lewd conduct” charge for having consensual sex with two men in a parked car in Pasadena.

Fast forward to 2020 – on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego) held a press conference on behalf of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus and the Legislative Black Caucus.They asked Governor Gavin Newsom to issues a posthumous pardon to Rustin.

Now, fast forward to this weekend – LGBTQ+ Long Beach chorus group, South Coast Chorale, is performing “The Man Behind the Dream.” This piece is a narrated choral work honoring the life of Rustin as a Gay Rights and Civil Rights activist.

The Pride LA spoke with Chris Smith, the Artistic Director of the SCC. Check it out: In one sentence, what is South Coast Chorale?

The South Coast Chorale is a musical voice of acceptance, inclusion and equality.

Can you elaborate more?

As the official LGBT Chorus of Long Beach, the South Coast Chorale uses music as an entertaining and educational vehicle to build bridges between communities and remind us that we are all more alike than different.

How did the group come to be?

The South Coast Chorale was founded in 1990, when a small group of individuals got together through their shared love of singing and a desire to have a safe place to express themselves through song.

Can you tell me a little bit about the Bayard Rustin performance?

“The Man Behind the Dream” premiered in 2018 by six LGBT Choruses across the country. This multi-movement piece, with music by Steve Milloy and lyrics by Vanessa German is set for chorus and spoken word, honors the life and work of openly gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin.

A mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin was pushed to the margins of the movement due to his sexuality. For the Inland Empire premiere, the South Coast Chorale will be joined by the Raincross Master Chorale, the Riverside Resistance Revival Chorus and the UCR Chamber Singers, accompanied by a live band and video projection. The concert will also include a performance by the DC6 singers of Los Angeles.

This is one of, if not the, biggest LGBTQ+ sports festival and bringing together so many people from our community is just magical.

How is Sin City Classic similar/different than Gay Games?

I think the focus here is more on community and fun, whereas the Gay Games are more about the competition.

Why did you get involved? What do you like about it?

I was looking to throw a big Vegas dodgeball event and this came along at the perfect time.

We get to do our dodgeball thing while also being able to meet and party with athletes from other sports.Without the collective power of all the sports we wouldn’t be able to get to have such amazing after parties as well!

Why is it important to have a safe space for LGBTQ+ Athletes to gather?

Our spaces are so valuable. It’s so important anytime we get to come together and let our guard down.To know that everyone around you is part of your community and really feel safe, it’s rare these days (and hard to come by for so many of our athletes in their day-to-day)

Craigslist Man Extorts Angelinos with Gay Sex, Pleads Guilty Tyler Buchanan faces 10 years in federal prison

A man has pleaded guilty to using Craigslist, among other sites, to extort hundreds of thousands of dollars from Santa Monica and Los Angeles men who responded to ads offering gay sex services.

28-year-old Tyler Buchanan pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal felony charges

using an interstate facility to facilitate an unlawful activity, transmitting threatening communications with intent to extort, receiving and disposing of proceeds of extortion and criminal forfeiture.

Buchanan, who remains in federal custody due to being deemed a risk to flee, faces up to 10 years in federal depending on the outcome of a sentencing hearing set for May 11.

Over a period of six years, Buchanan purchased more than 1,300 ads on Craigslist, Backpage among other services under

the moniker “Thuler O’Naill” offering sex services for hire, targeting gay men in multiple cities and states, including Santa Monica and Los Angeles, according to federal prosecutors.

After an individual would respond to one of Buchanan’s ads via a listed phone number, Buchanan would look up personal information on the victim and proceed to sext with

them, often including an agreement to engage in sex for money, according to his plea agreement. Buchanan would then threaten to publicize the texts and report the victim to the police for solicitation of prostitution unless an extortion fee was paid, ranging from $100 to $4,000 a month.

Buchanan is represented by Deborah Elise Gonzalez.

New CA Bill to End the Epidemics of HIV, Hepatitis C and Other STDs in LGBTQ+ Community Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) recently introduced a bill that would require state agencies to create and enforce a master plan to end new infections of HIV, hepatitis C and other STIs. All three diseases disproportionately impact gay and bisexual men, African American men and people ages 15-24, according to the Center for Disease Control.

“We have the tools to end new infections of HIV and STDs. What we’re missing is political will. This bill, SB 859, would require California to make a plan to end this epidemic, and help state agencies access the necessary resources to do so,” Wiener said in a press release. “I’m proud to be introducing another piece of legislation fighting for the LGBT community, which, alongside other marginalized communities, is disproportionately impacted by HIV and other STDs. California must be a leader on these issues, and right now we’re at risk of falling behind. SB 859 would a big step towards finally ending the epidemic.”

Senate Bill 859 would require the Secretary of California Health and Human Services (HHS), in coordination with the Chief of the Office of AIDS (OA), to create a comprehensive Master Plan to end new infections of HIV, HCV and other STDs. This bill mandates that the Secretary and Chief institute a Stakeholder Advisory Committee and work with relevant state agencies to set targets to end new infections and identify recommended programs, policies, strategies, and funding for achieving these targets.

“California can no longer respond to its HIV,

HCV, and STD epidemics as if they are distinct public health crises.These epidemics stem from the same root causes: lack of access to health care and prevention services, stigma and institutional bias, and an insufficient, fragmented response from our public health system,” AIDS Foundation CEO Joe Hollendoner said. “We are thankful to Senator Wiener for his leadership in calling for a statewide masterplan to end the epidemics and look forward to working together toward a future of health justice for all Californians.”

From 2013-2017, new HIV diagnoses decreased 2% in the African American community and increased by 4% in the Latinx community, while declining nearly 13% among white people. And, comparatively, in New York, since the implementation of a master plan to end new HIV infections in 2014, diagnoses are down 40%. California’s preventative work is falling dramatically behind other states, and it is time to take a more thorough approach to ending these epidemics.

“STD rates in California have reached record highs and HIV and hepatitis C continue to impact the state’s most vulnerable and underserved communities,” APLA Health CEO Craig E. Thompson said. “We applaud Senator Wiener for leading this bold effort to bring together state agencies and community members to develop an aggressive strategy to end these epidemics. Now we need the full support of the Governor and the Legislature. The longer they wait, the more it will cost California to treat new infections that could – and should – have been prevented in the first place.”

The Link Between Hearing Loss and Dementia Dr. Melissa Alexander helping patients minimize effects of hearing loss

By Keldine Hull The ability to hear can have a significant impact on all aspects of life, from someone’s emotional and physical well-being to their professional career and activities they enjoy outside of work. Despite research proving the link between untreated hearing loss and increased risks of falls, depression, anxiety, hospitalization and dementia, millions of people let their hearing loss go untreated.

According to Dr. Melissa Alexander, an audiologist based in Santa Monica, “Twenty-five years ago a case-control study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association first reported that hearing impairment in older adults was strongly and independently associated with the likelihood of having dementia- raising the intriguing hypothesis that age-related hearing impairment may contribute to dementia risk.”

Alexander added that over the last four years, growing epidemiologic and clinical research studies have bolstered that theory.

“Longitudinal studies of community-dwelling older adults have demonstrated that hearing impairment is independently associated with a 30-40% rate of accelerated cognitive decline,” Alexander explained. Compared to individuals with normal hearing, individuals with varying levels of hearing impairment had an increased risk of incident in dementia over 10 years of follow-up. Alexander continued, “Neuroimaging studies have also demonstrated that individuals with untreated hearing loss have reduced neuron volumes in the auditory cortex, responsible for speech processing and understanding, and accelerated rates of whole brain atrophy.”

(JAMA), failing to treat hearing loss can also have a financial impact. Alexander explained, “The University of California San Francisco, Johns Hopkins with AARP, and Optum Labs also ran this study. They looked at data from 77,000 to 150,000 patients over the age of 50 who had untreated hearing loss. People with normal hearing created 26 percent less health care costs compared to people who were recently diagnosed with hearing loss.”

Alexander continued, “That number continues to increase over time. After a decade, healthcare expenses increase by 46 percent.

Those numbers, when broken down, average $22,434 per person.” Factors associated with the increase include dementia, decline of cognitive ability, depression, lower quality of life, and falls.

Alexander also added that a second companion study done by Bloomberg School suggests a link between untreated hearing loss and higher morbidity. Through the study, it was revealed that people with untreated hearing loss had 3.2 more diagnoses of dementia per 100 over the course of 10 years, 6.9 more diagnoses of depression, and 3.6 more falls.

And hearing loss continues to rise. According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, hearing loss is prevalent in 55 to 64 year olds at a rate of 8.5 percent and approximately 2 percent of individuals 45 to 54 are significantly deaf. Alexander continued, “The number rises to 25 percent for individuals aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent for anybody above the age of 74. Those numbers are predicted to rise in the future. As many as 38

million people in this country could have hearing loss by the year 2060.”

Even younger demographics experience hearing loss. About 15 percent of 18-year-olds have a hard time hearing and 2 to 3 out of 1,000 children have hearing loss. “I am now seeing younger and younger patients coming in for hearing testing, many reporting tinnitus. Noise exposure is a major problem and it is causing younger people to experience hearing loss in their teens and twenties,” Alexander explained.

Using hearing aids can change these figures and help with some of the health issues connected with hearing loss. Alexander continued, “When I diagnose a patient with a hearing loss, I discuss with the patient how their hearing impairment affects their life. I routinely request a significant other be present to take part in the consultation, not only to obtain their feedback, but to inform them of the detrimental effects of untreated hearing loss.”

Alexander continued, “Because hearing loss

is typically insidious, it isn’t always evident to the patient how much they struggle to hear.

And because hearing loss is essentially an invisible disability, it’s important that I share with the patient’s loved ones how to effectively communicate, why it’s necessary to wear hearing aids consistently and what they can realistically expect the patient to hear with their hearing aids on.”

It’s important that hearing tests occur as early as possible to provide a baseline of hearing. Alexander continued, “Because the ramifications of hearing loss are so detrimental, hearing testing should be taken seriously and performed on an annual basis. Hearing protection, such as custom earplugs, ear muffs or over the counter hearing protection should be a routine staple of every household. For even younger children, parents should make sure headphones have a limiter so that even if their child turns up the volume, the sound cannot cause damage to the ears.”

GUEST COLUMN: Queer Mindfulness Meditation

InsightLA is a non-profit meditation center offering practices of mindfulness and compassion that are both secular and Buddhist in origin.

For 17 years, InsightLA has been offering classes, silent retreats, and special events, with nearly 70% being offered on a donation-basis so that these teachings can be accessible to anyone regardless of financial means. Additionally, InsightLA offers financial support to any fee-based program so that no one is turned away for lack of funds.

InsightLA is an open, inclusive and welcoming community comprised of folks who practice mindfulness. In addition, InsightLA has a social justice arm called Insight in Action that makes mindfulness meditation freely available to the dedicated caregivers, social justice and environmental activists, first responders, teachers, and individuals who are on the front lines of suffering in Southern California and beyond.

Queer Mindfulness is an affinity group at InsightLA that is led by a team of facilitators who identify across the LGBTQ+ spectrum and likewise open to anyone identifying along the spectrum of queer identities, regardless of prior meditation experience. This group is an opportunity to practice meditation in community, build wholesome connections, and be mindfully present to the joys and sorrows that arise from living in the world as a queer person.The format of each monthly meeting is guided by two facilitators who share a talk, give a 30 minute guided meditation, and facilitate small group breakout sessions with opportunities for community discussion.

The concept for Queer Mindfulness, like any affinity group, arose from the desire for people to share a safe space with others who understand and share their experience. It is so rare for queer spaces to exist that encourage vulnerability, build resilience and genuine connection, and are not centered around party-scenes or substance use.

Queer people also face pervasive institutional bias, violence, and social stigma making it challenging for folks to safely be out. Queer people are also smaller in numbers than straight and cis-gen-

der folks, which means that queer people are frequently underrepresented and isolated. With all that said, Queer Mindfulness at InsightLA is intended to be a refuge for folks to feel at home amongst people who desire to be compassionate and present for one another and who just “get it.”

Members of the queer community have been incredibly receptive to this group and just keep coming back. Each month, there are roughly 20-40 people in attendance from across sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, age, race, culture and also varying experiences of being out. We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from community members.

Here’s what two people had to say about how the group has impacted them: “There’s not a lot of LGBT groups like this where you get to learn from people and get to know what it’s like for them and just be intentional. I have other gay men’s groups but they don’t include the L’s, B’s or T’s of our community. This group helps me see how we have more in common than meets the eye.”

“I didn’t think I could meditate before coming here.The teachers made it so easy to understand.

Don’t get me wrong, paying attention to my mind is still hard (haha) but I’m also learning to not be so hard on myself. I do have a lot of shame but this group helps me feel like I’m part of a community.

I’m so grateful it exists.”

The hope is that queer folks will feel welcomed and valued at InsightLA no matter what programs they attend and at the same time, know that there is a dedicated space just for them to practice, heal, celebrate and build community. The intention is that everyone who attends Queer Mindfulness leaves feeling more connected, more present, and more compassionate toward themselves and others.

LA’s Only Known Trans Nightlife Event Just Got A Little More Fierce Heavenly Bodies is Los Angeles’ only known monthly transgender nightlife event featuring live performances hosted by trans model and activist, Sasha Colby. Proceeds from specialty cocktails made with Illegal Mescal are donated to the Trans Wellness Center to bring additional support and awareness to the trans community.

I’m Sasha Colby, Hawaii native. Performance artist, Dancer, Choreographer, Actress. I’m a trans woman and I have been a drag performer for 18 years.

In one sentence, what is Heavenly Bodies?

Heavenly bodies is an All Inclusive Queer Positive Party celebrating everyone on the spectrum.

Can you elaborate more?

Our biggest goal for Heavenly Bodies is to provide a safe haven where trans people can mix and be and really network with each other.

To bring our community together by having real interactions.

What inspired this event? What do you like about it?

Being in the nightlife industry for quite a while I have had the opportunity to be in almost every position in nightlife, from bartending to go go dancing to drag performing and hosting, And I definitely have moments where I felt like an afterthought or totally not understood in situations in clubs all over the country. So this project is definitely something near and dear to my heart because I want to make sure that everyone that comes to the party and everyone that is working with me has a sense of belonging and feeling valid in the space they take up in life.

What I absolutely love about this event is that already it has not just allowed the trans community to come together but what I’ve noticed through messages on social media and people coming up to me is that it offers a fun place for the queer community in general, so people that identify as gender fluid or non-binary, etc… all feel that The fact that there is a night like this happening that it is lending itself towards a more

inclusive conversation which is definitely needed.

How long have you been the host of the event?

This baby is pretty new️ We had our first heavenly bodies December 8 2019. Our opening night was an overwhelming success. And it definitely showed the need that there is for a parties like this.

What can attendees expect from Heavenly Bodies on Sunday?

Attendees can expect a great way to wrap up Sunday fun day festivities.We not only have amazing trans hosts like Gigi Gorgeous, Brozlyn Lechelle and GOTTMIK. I also have a all trans show at Midnight featuring myself, Jazmin Balenciaga, Aurora Sexton, and Michell’e Michaels!! Let’s not forget our Trans dancers all night long dancing to music by Josh Peace. There will also be a booth set up for The Trans Wellness Center offering information and resources for the community! We also have an Illegal Mezcal sponsored drink special for the night called Smokey Eyes, which is a play off of the rich smokey flavor of Illegal Mezcal. $1 of every specialty drink sold on Sunday will go directly to The Trans Wellness Center.

Heavenly Bodies is an event thats was created for safe space, fun, and dialougue between trans beings and allies.

Can you elaborate more?

It’s a celebration of the most marginalized community in the country. Its a chance to dive deeper and to own our power of the God like beings we as trans people are. Heavenly Bodies is a perfect title that speaks to trans-ness in a ancestral way. Not a lot of people know the history of trans beings and how we played major roles such as gate keepers, oracles, kings, queens, shamans, and thought of as the closes gender to God in ancient cultures.

Why do folks call you “Transgender Beyoncé?”

People call me the “Transgender Beyonce” because I am a trans woman and I not only performer Beyonce but I channel her…. I am Sasha Fierce How long have you been a professional performer? What do you like about it?

I have been performing since the tender age of 16, I decided to focus on just performing Beyonce for 5 years now. I love performing because it is a great creative outlet and I love making people feel good.

What can attendees expect from your performance on Sunday?

If you come out Sunday you expect an optical illusion that will for sure leave you questioning if Beyonce is really performing at the Chapel by Abbey.
