Westside Doctor Arrested After Asking Minor for Sexually Explicit Photos Longtime medical correspondent arrested on suspicion of contacting a minor with the intent to commit sexual acts

Dr. Bruce M. Hensel, the former KNBC medical correspondent, was arrested last Wednesday morning at his Pacific Palisades home for asking a 9-year-old girl to send him sexually suggestive pictures, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The 71-year-old Hensel was brought into custody on suspicion of contacting a minor with the intent to commit sexual acts at 10:15 a.m.

by LAPD Juvenile Division investigators, said spokesperson for the department. Hensel is being held on $5,000 bail.

According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Hensel is charged with requesting the images from the daughter of an acquaintance through a messaging app on or about August 4.

If convicted as charged, Hensel faces a possible maximum sentence of 18 months in state prison.

On October 16, the Los Angeles Regional Internet Crime Against Children Task Force served

a search warrant at Hensel’s Palisades and removed items from the hillside house as part of the investigation, according to the LAPD. Further details about the case were not immediately released.

THE REALITIES OF HAVING AN ESTATE SALE

People have many reasons for getting rid of their stuff, but most often an estate sale is for exactly what it says. It’s to liquidate a home of its contents after someone passes away or possibly when someone has moved in with children or to an assisted living home that cannot accommodate one’s personal furnishings and accumulated possessions.

I’ve seen people stress out, siblings become frustrated to the point of anger, and families split to impasse, missing perfect opportunities having far more financial impact. Let’s eliminate the 5% of all estate sales that include mega value signed art, rare watch collections, exotic cars, furs, coins and elaborate and significant pieces of high-value jewelry.

The 95% of remaining estate sales have ordinary to antique furniture, art, various collectables, rugs, vases, porcelain, glass, garage machinery and tools, silverware, tea sets, fine china, etc.

Typically, the dollar amount offered by a dealer is 20 cents on the dollar for value, or perhaps a consignment arrangement might be proposed with 35% commission. If the estate sale company guarantees everything to be sold and the residence to be left broom swept, the likelihood is the estate sale professional will rarely offer to sign on for less than 40% commission with a minimum guarantee payment to them in some cases.

A typical furnished home of under 4,000 square feet will usually end up compensating the homeowner from a nominal amount to $25,000, unless the owner is piece by piece selling which is tremendously time consuming with no guarantees.

Garage sales have become a Sunday sport for people who are bargain hunters, usually not intending to spend more than $200 unless they are shopping for something specific. Of course there are always dealers with no money constraints waiting to jump on rare undervalued items to which the owner is clueless to value. There are many sad victories quite often where the dealer has the value knowledge and the uninformed owner is simply dumping contents of the home.

At the end of the story, my advice is the following: If you have reasons to believe that you have some exceptionally valuable pieces, by all means, have the estate’s contents appraised by a licensed fee appraiser.

Always have hand-made antique rugs, fine jewelry and significant pieces of art appraised by an appropriate specialist.

Meet with family to discuss who will get what, and how to move forward with the process.

Know in advance that emotions and in some cases family disfunction might jump in when unexpect-

ed. Jealousy or resentment among siblings is a true, but unfortunate reality in some cases.

Keep your belongings insured and secured if they have value and take photographs before allowing anyone near anything. Keep a close eye out for item lifters if you are conducting your own sale.

Know in advance that there are a fair share of thieves and also unethical dealers, but there are also many wonderful, honest and helpful people too.

Consider the give to charity and get the write off deduction. There are appraisers who will document value in a legitimate and acceptable way for IRS to be satisfied.

As a significant last item, go back to the 95% of all cases. Don’t risk getting into fights with family members, stressing yourself out and killing yourself by doing tons of work and hosting numerous estate sales thinking that you will make big bucks and in the meantime lose out on the best selling season for selling the house.

A good bidding war with the proper preparation and guidance may easily produce a selling price $100,000 over the fair market value simply based on timing, limited supply and exceptionally strong demand, which can end up adding significant amounts to your walk away cash equity, while stressing out and losing sleep over what the estate sale will end up producing in dollars. As a real estate advisor and skilled negotiator for over 30 years, I have seen both: 1) Homeowners miss the golden opportunity while squabbling over estate sale issues and 2) Homeowners making three times the money from overbids while selling the house in comparison to what they ultimately pocketed from an elaborate estate sale.

One year after the Woolsey Fire burned almost 100,000 acres of land in the Santa Monica Mountains, damaging 112 miles of trails, a second phase of the recovery effort is reportedly underway. The first phase began immediately after the fire.

“Strict environmental rules govern the treatment of contaminated sites,” the National Park Service (NPS) said in a news release. “The process involves rigorous testing before and after treatment to ensure that materials are disposed of properly and that the site is cleaned to accepted standards.”

Before debris can be removed, necessary testing must be conducted first. “Since all buildings have toxins in them when they burn, testing for hazardous materials is a critical step that must be taken prior to the

removal of any of the debris,” Park Superintendent David Szymanski explained. “As caretakers for the public’s lands, we are required to guarantee that all toxins have been removed. We can’t just use our park equipment and haul everything off.”

Once the testing process is completed early next year, debris removal from 30 structures and outbuildings is slated to begin by spring 2020. Lead Builders, Inc., a Thousand Oaks based business, was awarded a $1.6 million contract in September to remove and haul debris from different locations throughout the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area. According to the NPS, the debris consists of vegetation, ash, contaminated soil, trees that prohibit work performance, household hazardous waste and electric waste.

“The park has focused on reopening trails and park sites,” the NPS continued.

“Over the past year, park rangers worked to open these trails, clear roads, stabilize hillsides, repair culverts and conduct surveys on bridges that were in need of repair.” To date, 103 miles of the 112 that burned in the fire have reopened. Two more park units, Peter Strauss Ranch and Rocky Oaks, are expected to open before Thanksgiving.

Heirloom Ring Survives Getty Fire “It’s a total miracle”

By Keldine Hull As Brentwood residents cope with the aftermath of the Getty Fire, an unlikely discovery offers a glimmer of hope to one resident in particular: an heirloom ring that survived both the 1961 Bel Air Fire and the recent Getty Fire.

Patty Shales lost everything, including her home, in the fire until an assistant chief found a jewelry box on the ground outside where Shales’ home once stood. Inside the box was Shales’ mother’s wedding ring, virtually untouched.

Shales’ mother passed away last November.

“She was really a special person,” Shales said in an interview with ABC7. “And I feel that she sent me this to tell me that she’s in Heaven and she’s OK. And I’m gonna be OK. I totally have that spiritual connection. I just feel so blessed and so grateful for the firemen.”

Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) Assistant Chief Jamie Moore made the miraculous discovery. “I had the unfortunate task of telling her her house had been destroyed,” Moore told ABC7. “But I told her hold on a minute, I might have something for her.”

in that section of the street. Sitting there all by itself. When they opened it and saw the beautiful ring inside, they just knew this would be very important to the homeowner and delivered it to the Command Post.

In addition to the Getty Fire, the ring also survived the 1961 Bel Air Fire that destroyed some of the same homes that were rebuilt and destroyed by the Getty Fire. “It’s just unbelievable, really,” Shales continued. “It’s a total miracle.”

Billionaire’s Think Tank in High-Risk Fire Zone?

Nicolas Berggruen’s plan for a Berggruen Institute in Brentwood raises safety questions.

By S am C atanzaro Opponents of a proposal to construct a campus for a think tank in the hills of Brentwood argue it would establish a dangerous precedent for commercial development in a high-risk fire zone.

Backers, however, contend the campus is more environmentally friendly than many large mansions that may otherwise be constructed.

Billionaire Nicolas Berggruen wants to open the Berggruen Institute campus on 450 acres in the Santa Monica Mountains zoned for 28-single family homes, agreeing to keep around 95 percent of the land as open space while adding new public hiking trails.

The proposed development includes a one-story, 109,880-square- foot main structure along with 21,000 square feet of residential space with 15 units for scholars and visitors.

The low structure would wrap around a central courtyard with a 250-seat circular lecture hall that would dramatically rise 45 feet above the surrounding building. Three

pavilions equaling 30,000 square feet are proposed as well.

The development must first clear a multiyear environmental review process that recently begun and residents of the nearby Mountaingate Open Space Management Association are asking city officials to reject the Berggruen Institute’s application.

At the Brentwood Community Council meeting Wednesday, November 13 representatives from the association argued that the institution should not be described as an educational institute. Under city coding, such educational developments have less restrictive zoning regulations. In addition, residents worry the institute will create more traffic.

According to Steve Soboroff, a Berggruen Institute LA Committee member and senior project advisor “The Berggruen Institute will be — first and foremost — a campus for scholarly study,” in a statement to City News Service.

The development’s critics also argue that the recent Getty Fire should be a warning to community leaders of the hazards of developing in a high-risk fire area.

Soboroff to this end said that former Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Bill Bamattre has been appointed by the institute to come up with a fire safety plan to improve current safety conditions.

The Berggruen Institute was founded in 2010 and is dedicated to “engaging great thinkers to develop and promote long-term answers to the biggest challenges of the 21st century,” and works to reform California’s state and local government while focusing on issues such as climate change and economic inequality.

Source of Washed Up Needles Unknown LA County lifeguards, Public Health still investigating incident

By Sam Catanzaro Recently, a “large amount” of medical supplies, including 100 hypodermic needles, washed ashore on Venice Beach, forcing authorities to close part of the beach.

Four days later, the source of the needles remains unknown.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Lifeguard Division at around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 10, lifeguards observed a large amount of medical supplies along the shoreline south of the Venice Beach Pier and cordoned off the area for several hours. The materials were reported to have included over 100 hypodermic needles and lancets, tools used to prick the skin for collecting blood samples. There have been no reported injuries related to medical supplies.

The source of the needles and medical supplies is not currently known as the incident remains under investigation.

The incident has some Venice Beach residents surprised and worried “I’ve never seen anything like that before,” Mike Bonasede, a Venice resident, told NBC 4. “I’ve seen single needles here and there, probably from people on land. But my guess is somebody probably dumped that stuff, the way it was washed up there.”

“It’s obviously very disturbing, you know.

Hopefully, someone can figure out where it came from so it never happens again,” added Michael Gaspark, another Venice resident.

What to know about water quality after rain

With the first significant rainfall of the season in the books, authorities are warning beachgoers about elevated levels of bacteria in the ocean, which may come as a dismay to some surfers with a solid swell sending wavest to the region.

"During [an] LA rain storm runoff from our sidewalks and roadways washes into our storm drain system and flushes out to sea. In Los An-

geles County alone, there are 70+ major outfalls that spew trash, animal waste, pesticides, automotive fluids and human-gastrointestinal viruses into local bodies of water," Heal the Bay said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Beachgoers are advised to wait at least 72 hours before entering the water after rainfall, the time it takes for bacteria and other pollutants to dilute back down to safe concentrations.

Contributing factors like water flow and currents impact how quickly beaches recover from pollutants in the water.

“Skin infections and rashes; eye, ear and nose infections; and gastrointestinal symptoms are some of the more common yet minor afflictions

that can be picked up by surfing or swimming in the ocean after it rains. And there’s worse with MRSA, Vibrio and other life-threatening diseases that are possible to contract if exposed to human sewage in recreational waters," said Katie Day, Staff Scientist for the Surfrider Foundation in an interview with Palisades News earlier this year. “Beaches near river and stormwater

outfalls experience more severe stormwater pollution, as these areas border the immediate discharge areas for debris and pollution swept in from urban areas."

FILM REVIEW: “Ford v. Ferrari” I have to admit that I’m a biased viewer of “Ford v Ferrari”. Although I’ve never been a fan of watching car races (boring), I have often raced cars in my dreams. I love the feeling of moving oneself at speeds that can only be reached with the help of engineered machinery. When I was 21 I saved up and bought a used British sports car, a Sunbeam Alpine. I loved that car. To me, this movie is a 2½-hour thrill ride behind the wheel of a powerful sports car.

The racing scenes are extraordinary - you actually feel yourself gripping the wheel, moving the gears at just the right split second to get maximum speed, and the beautiful exhilaration of flying smoothly through space as if picked up by a gust of wind. In this movie, as director James Mangold states, “The cars were their own characters.”

Matt Damon shines as legendary driver/designer Carroll Shelby. Racer Dan Gurney’s youngest son, Alex Gurney, portrays his own Dad. The real Lee Iacocca, who unfortunately passed away a few months before the release of this film at the age of 94, is played by Jon Bernthal. Caitriona Balfe is perfectly cast as Mollie Miles, and shows her great strength, intelligence and power. She is able to provide just the right touchstone for her unpredictable, wild husband.

Christian Bale reinforces my belief that he is one of the best actors who will ever grace the screen.

He becomes daredevil Ken Miles, the British racer who had an uncanny ability to feel the balance that exists between driver, machine and speed. The story stays true to real details of Miles’ later life. He was born in Birmingham England just after World

War I, raced motorcycles as a young man and drove a tank in World War II. In the mid 1950’s he moved to the US to develop racecars and enter races himself. Incidentally he developed a racecar in the early 1960’s called the Sunbeam Tiger. My Sunbeam Alpine was a lower priced version of that car, which the British Rootes Group bought from Miles.

What you will take away from this film is Bale’s performance. This extraordinary actor captures the manic energy and razor sharp intelligence and intuition of this working class Brit who came to America to pursue his love of racing cars. Bale had to lose seventy pounds from his role as Dick Cheney in “Vice”, before filming began. He also spent six hours a day for a week at Bondurant High Perfor-

mance Driving School owned by former racer Bob Bondurant. Even Matt Damon was impressed with Bale’s “monk-like” discipline. That focus is something that Bale uses for his character. The acting, the camera work and the editing on this film are superb. If you’ve ever even driven a car fast, even just to pull away from the rest of the traffic, you will find the experience of watching this film exhilarating. If you’ve ever raced anyone in a car, especially in a sports car, you will relive that thrill.
