Gladstone’s to Continue Operations, Launches New Happy Hour Concept Staff Joined Forces Among Themselves to Create a New Type of Ownership By Zach Armstrong An iconic dining gem for West L.A. made headlines recently with news that it would end operations sometime this month, while the space awaited Wolfgang Puck to rebuild it with his own vision. However, the Pacific seaside restaurant Gladstone’s will stay open under a new management team before it gets replaced by Puck and architect Frank Gehry. Former Mayor Richard Riodan held an agreement with the County to operate Gladstone’s, but the family did not want to bid on an extension once it ended. According to General Manager Jim Harris, ownership of the restaurant went to a trust which doesn’t run restaurants around the time the lease was up. Once it was clear there would be a two-year absence in the space, the county approached Gladstone’s
staff to ask if they could carry on for community benefit. Not only did they agree, but joined forces among themselves to create a new type of ownership for the oceanfront outpost. Whereas the restaurant was previously under the ownership of Sea View Restaurants LLC, it is now owned by Gladstone’s Legacy which is composed of Harris, the assistant manager, the chef and the parking lot manager. While Gladstone’s (located at 17300 Pacific Coast Highway) will likely remain in operation for at least another two years, Harris said an exact time frame is not yet determined. Harris also expressed his approval of Wolfgang’s future plans for the dining space. “We’re not affiliated with Wolfgang, but we’re very supportive and looking forward to his ambitious project that he’s trying to do on the coast,” Harris said. Along with the move to stay open, Gladstone’s has also launched a way to celebrate its “Golden Era” every weekday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a new take on happy hour. Launched on Oct. 9, its “70s Vibe Golden Hour” provides a cost of $7 each for calamari, burgers, fish & chips,
pina coladas, malibu margs and parking. Also featured are $5 beer and wine along with food and drink specials. The property is anchored on a total 2.8acre parcel and housed Gladstone’s for over 50 years. Puck said that he will deliver the new restaurant replacement with an “approachable, high-quality cuisine in a distinct architectural setting”. Gehry, the man behind its upcoming design, is a household name in architecture. Gehry is an award-winning architect
behind projects such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (called “the greatest building of our time” by Philip Johnson) and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. He also worked to enhance acoustics at the Hollywood Bowl and was selected to convert an old warehouse into a Temporary Contemporary exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1989, Gehry was awarded the international architecture award the Pritzker Prize.
Simon Meadow Park to Get $1M Improvements Funds for the Project Were Secured Through a Limited Portion of the State Budget By Zach Armstrong
The Palisades-Malibu YMCA was presented with a $1 million check to restore Simon Meadow Park and create new gathering and bathroom structures. Funds for the project were secured by California State Senator Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), who also presented the check, through a limited portion of the state budget for local projects that yield community benefits. Changes made to the park will aim to increase its accessibility, improve youth programming

and create new shaded areas. Simon Meadow is a highly visited recreational site that sits at the bottom of Temescal Canyon Park. It is also the site of vibrant community events such as the recent Community Health & Wellness Day and the Pumpkin Patch Fundraiser currently taking place through the month. “Having grown up here and benefited from programs such as these as a kid, I know how invaluable the YMCA is to our families, and I’m so glad we were able to secure them
this crucial funding.” Senator Allen said in a statement. “This funding will help to make Simon Meadows a more vibrant and useful site for the YMCA’s regional programs that expose youth to the wonders of the outdoors.” The check was presented during Pacific Palisades Community Council’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park, along with representatives from LAPD and LAFD, were in attendance.

Luxurious Senior Living Center Comes to Palisades A Rooftop Terrace Provides Views of the Santa Monica Mountains By Zach Armstrong After an early October grand opening ceremony, a new resort-style retirement community will soon open its doors for seniors to spend their golden years basking in luxury living in the Pacific Palisades. Ciela, founded by President Rony Shram and located at 17310 West Vereda de la Montura, boasts a host of amenities along with various levels of care including assisted living, memory care and independent living. Situated in the Palisades Highlands, its rooftop terrace provides views of the Santa Monica Mountains while dedicated walking paths are minutes away from the beach. Community spaces make socialization
and entertainment a key element at Celia with arts & crafts, guest speakers, game rooms and a bar. The physical and mental well-being of residents is preserved thanks to physical therapy & personal training, a full-service hair & nail salon, a Hydrotherapy Pool and its Verso Vitality Center where seniors can undergo therapies including yoga, sound guided meditation, acupuncture, red light therapy and more. The Heights, an indoor/outdoor roof deck restaurant serving a seasonal menu with local farmer’s produce, follows the “Blue Zone diet” protocol which includes 95% intake of vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes. Other food and drink options include world class wine, in-room dining, brick oven pizza and grab-and-go options for coffee, tea and artisanal smoothies. Residencies include different layouts for both furnished and unfurnished one bedroom apartments that feature floor-toceiling windows, mountain views, washers and dryers and 24/7 concierge services. “We’re challenging the stereotypes of assisted living.” the living center says of
itself on its website. “This is a time for
possibilities. That’s why we focus our care
rejuvenation, for finding new meaning
on the principles of purpose, community,
in life, and for joyful exploration of new
environment, joy, and movement.”

Nonprofit for Palisadian Seniors Ends Operations
ADULT DAY CENTER WE TAKE CARE OF YOU LIKE FAMILY The Tax-Exempt Organization Supports Palisadian Seniors by Providing Information and Developing Services By Zach Armstrong The Palisades Alliance for Seniors is dissolving as a nonprofit corporation and transferring its assets to Meals on Wheels West, the organization announced on its website. “We’ve received quite a few inquiries asking if/when we will recommence the robust programming we previously ran.” the website states. “We too miss the joy and connection of those pre-COVID biweekly meetings at the library. Sadly, however, for logistical reasons we won’t be re-starting.” The tax-exempt organization supports
seniors in Pacific Palisades to stay connected with their community by providing information and developing services. Through the group and its website, it aims to promote available resources and develop services so seniors in Palisades feel secure as they age safely and comfortably. On its website, it promoted events and services including a local Senior Bocce League and how to detect and avoid senior scammers. The organization listed other available services and programs for local seniors such as the Palisades YMCA’s weekly distribution of free bagged groceries in front of 821 Via de la Paz on Thursdays between noon and 2:00 p.m., or the Palisades Branch Library’s Stop Senior Scams Acting Program and Senior Writing programs. MOWW, as it states, has a meal delivery program serving Palisadian clients, along with a friendly caller program where volunteers call clients weekly to reduce isolation and loneliness, and provide referrals to other social service agencies.

Work Begins on Temescal Canyon Road Improvements Over a Month Ago, City Council Approved Funds for the Mitigation Plan By Zach Armstrong Improvements on Temescal Canyon Road’s problems of seepage and roadway damage are in the works and are set to be done by the end of this month, Councilmember Traci Park announced in an email to constituents. “The work on Temescal Canyon Road will start on Monday, October 2nd.” Councilmember Park said. “We are mindful of traffic impacts and how critical this route is for emergency ingress and egress to the Pacific Palisades. We appreciate your ongoing patience and cooperation as we move forward with these essential repairs.” The announcement comes a little over a month after L.A. City Council approved $800,000 in funds for the Bureau of
Engineering’s mitigation plan for the road. A point of focus for the restoration is the southbound lane between Pacific Coast Highway and West Bowdoin Street, a
popular entry point into Pacific Palisades and the adjacent streetway of Temescal Canyon Park, Palisades Charter High School and Stadium by the Sea. The lane
experienced instability from water seepage caused by heavy winter rains earlier this year, officials previously said.

Palisadian Author’s Work to be Featured in Upcoming Festival While She Frequently Explores Rural California, This Time She Turns Closer to Home on the Santa Monica Pier Palisadian author Deanne Stillman’s monologue, titled “Mister Fireman, Can You Help Me Get Home,” has earned a coveted spot in the Topanga Actors Company’s upcoming Short Play Festival 2023. Chosen from a pool of 400 international entries, Stillman’s contribution echoes the distinctive and evocative style that characterizes her work. While Stillman frequently explores rural California in her writing, this time she turns her literary lens closer to home, capturing the essence of the Santa Monica Pier as viewed from the bluffs in Pacific Palisades. As noted on Stillman’s website, her book “Twentynine Palms” garnered critical
acclaim and became an LA Times bestseller and “best book of the year.” Hunter Thompson lauded it as “A strange and brilliant story by an important American writer.” In 2008, a new edition with a foreword by T. Jefferson Parker and a preface by Charles Bowden was published by Angel City Press. The book delves into the harrowing murders of two young girls in a picturesque Southern California military town, committed by a Marine shortly after the Gulf War. Stillman’s book, “Mustang,” which took a decade to complete, questions why a nation with a cowboy heritage is sanctioning the destruction of the very animal that symbolizes that heritage. “Mustang” received numerous accolades, including an LA Times “best book of the year” designation and the California Book Award silver medal for nonfiction. It garnered praise from respected publications such as the Atlantic Monthly, Economist, NPR’s On Point, Orion, Seattle Times, Santa Fe New Mexican, Cleveland PlainDealer, Kirkus, and Publishers Weekly, among others. The book’s impact extended beyond literature, fostering support for wild horse and burro preservation,
catching the attention of President Obama, contributing to fundraising efforts for rescue organizations, and saving countless horses from an ill-fated journey to the slaughterhouse.
“Mister Fireman” is one of seven compelling plays scheduled for performances on the afternoons of Nov. 4 and 5, with the full program spanning into the weekend of Nov. 18 and 19.

The original production starred the unparalleled Sutton Foster, who
received Tony, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations for her performance.”
