The Modoc County

23 Years Remembering September 11, 2001

September 11, 2001

is a day that will remain cemented in the hearts and memories of Americans forever. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that morning in a series of terrorist attacks on the United States. As we mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, we are reminded of the profound impact this day had on our nation and the enduring spirit of resilience, unity, and hope that emerged from the ashes of tragedy.

The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington,

Virginia and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in a Pennsylvania field, left a lasting mark on the world. The images of the Twin Towers collapsing, the smoke billowing from the Pentagon, and the haunting silence that followed are forever imprinted in the memories of so many. But beyond the horror and devastation, the events of 9/11 also brought out the best in humanity.

In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, the United States saw an outpouring of unity. Communities across the country came together

in a shared sense of grief and determination. First responders, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice, became symbols of courage and selflessness. Ordinary citizens turned into heroes as they rushed to help those in need, whether by donating blood, offering support to the families of victims, or simply by being there for one another. Political and social differences were set aside as Americans of all backgrounds stood together, united by a common purpose. The American flag became a powerful symbol of resilience, flying proudly

in every corner of the nation.

Over the past 23 years, countless memorials, ceremonies, and moments of silence have been held to honor the victims of that fateful day and the heroes who emerged from the tragedy. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City stands as a testament to the lives lost and the enduring strength of the American spirit. The memorial pools, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers, serve as a touching reminder of the void left by the attacks, while the museum

preserves the stories of those who perished and those who survived.

September 11, 2001 profoundly impacted the lives of those who lost loved ones, the survivors, and the first responders who were exposed to toxic conditions at Ground Zero. Many continue to struggle with physical and mental health issues as a result of their experiences that day. Yet, amid the pain and loss, the legacy of 9/11 is also one of hope. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, humanity can come together to support one another, to rebuild, and to move

forward with strength and determination.

As we mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, we honor the memory of those lost by continuing to strive for a better, more peaceful world. In remembering, we reaffirm the commitment to the values that define us as a nation: freedom, democracy, and compassion. We honor the courage of the first responders, the resilience of the survivors, and the incredible strength of the American people.

The Freeman Family and Pure Honey Company

By Nourish Food Hub

Meet the Freeman family, the multigenerational team that runs Pure Honey Company between Chico and Alturas, CA! We had a chance to catch up with Donna Freeman and she shared Pure Honey updates.

If you have not heard the story of how the Freeman family started keeping bees, it all started with Jay Freeman, son of Donna or Rowdy Freeman (of Alturas). As a detective with the Butte County Sheriff’s Department, after investigating a case of stolen bee hives, Jay became fascinated with bees and started

Pure Honey Co.

beekeeping as a hobby with his family. They grew to love beekeeping, and eventually grew their passion into a business! They now offer pollination services for local almond and cherry orchards, and sell their honey on Nourish Food Hub.

According to Donna, it’s almost honey harvesting season for Pure Honey!

The crew will begin harvest in Alturas, on September 7th. Donna shares that anyone interested in watching the honey harvest process is more than welcome to be in touch with Pure Honey! The Freemans’ bees are kept at more than 50 locations

throughout Modoc County. They have also added star thistle honey to their offerings, alongside clover, alfalfa, and wildflower varieties. This year, the Freemans introduced jalapeño flavored honey (all varieties available through Nourish Food Hub!).

After honey harvest, the bees will remain in Modoc County through the end of October/early November, when they will return to Chico for the winter months. Thank you Freeman honey bees for your pollination of Modoc County and for the beautiful honey!

Modoc’s Autumn Transformation Begins

As summer is nearing its end in Modoc, nature is beginning its annual transformation. The air is getting crisper, the days are growing shorter, and the first hints of fall are appearing in the trees along Alturas’s Main Street. Leaves are changing from their vibrant greens to shades of red, orange, and yellow, signaling the fast

approach of autumn. The cooling temperatures bring a welcome relief from this year’s summer heat, tempting many to pull out cozy sweaters and enjoy the cooler evenings. Fall is more than just a change in weather — it’s a season that invites a slower pace, reflection, and the savoring of simple pleasures. Whether it’s

a walk outside to admire the foliage or curling up with a good book and a warm drink, autumn offers a sense of comfort and renewal. As we enter the chillier “ber” months and start preparing for the colder weather to come, remember to embrace the beauty of this season of change and enjoy all that fall has to offer!

Medicine Lake Campground Loops Anticipates September Closures for Insect Treatment Press Release by Modoc NF

Please be aware that the Medicine Lake Campground Loops on the Modoc National Forest will be closed for at least four days between September 16th and 27th. This closure is necessary for insecticide treatment to address the Mountain Pine Beetle issue in the recreation area. For precise closure dates, please contact the

Modoc National Forest Supervisor’s Office at 530-233-5811 or visit our Facebook page. Please note that the day use, and boat launch area will remain open. Dispersed camping is available at Blanche, Bullseye, and Paynes Springs, as well as other dispersed sites outside of the Medicine Lake campground loops. The closure is crucial

due to increased levels of lodgepole pine mortality caused by the pine beetle over the past three years. This has led to the loss of forest canopy, an increase in hazardous dead trees, a decrease in aesthetic values and wildlife habitat within the campgrounds. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us preserve the natural beauty of the area.

BOOT & SHOE

Two New Exhibitions at Cedarville’s Studio 540

Studio 540, Modoc County’s premier contemporary art gallery, is excited to announce

Julie D’Amario: The Peace of Wild Places and Drawn from Nature, featuring work by Colter Jacobsen, Nicholas Karrasch, Rumi Koshino, Dave Muller, Diane Roby, and Jesse Schlesinger.

Eagleville resident Julie D’Amario is a master printer specializing in copper plate etching. For nearly twenty years she worked at Pace Editions, in New York, assisting artists such as Jim Dine, Chuck Close, and Mary Heilmann in the creation of their prints. She has also been instrumental in establishing and expanding the Jordan Schnitzer Print Residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon Coast. While her work in the print medium is widely known and celebrated,

her own artistic practice, consisting mostly of painting, has rarely been shown. D’Amario’s paintings explore the landscape as seen from above. Using a palette of highly saturated colors in a spectrum of radiant hues, D’Amario captures the diverse aspects of land, sea, and clouds that comprise the surface of the earth. Over the past several decades she has been inspired by a variety of remarkable places including Botswana’s Okavango Delta, the barren coast of Newfoundland, and the dramatic geography of the Surprise Valley.

Stylistically, D’Amario’s paintings draw on sources as varied as topographical maps and ocean depth charts, Indian miniatures, and Renaissance altarpieces. Through her attention to minute details as well as universal patterns of land, water,

and sky, D’Amario opens our eyes to an awareness of the transience and interconnectedness of all natural phenomena and forms.

Accompanying

D’Amario’s exhibition will be a group show, Drawn from Nature, featuring works by six artists who, like D’Amario, share a fascination with the natural world. Colter Jacobsen will show a recent print made with D’Amario’s assistance in her Eagleville studio. Departing from his usually highly detailed style, Jacobsen captures the transient beauty of a single Western Salsify seedhead. If Jacobsen’s work captures a fleeting instant, Karrasch’s sketchbook documents the landscape of Surprise Valley seen over many weeks and days. Rumi Koshino, similarly, makes art as part of a daily ritual of walks and observations.

About her drawing, made during a stay in Bellingham, Washington, Koshino wrote, “These glowing flowers are a reflection of the stars in the deep blue sky in my imagination.”

San Francisco-based artist Dave Muller’s piece is part of a series of “memory paintings” that describe residual feelings after experiences in nature. His watercolor, Drinking Trees, was made

after a long, foggy walk on Mt Tamalpais. The apparent spontaneity of Muller’s watercolor contrasts with Diane Roby’s graphite drawing, which began in plein air as a response to a particular landscape setting and then developed through a slow process of revision and accumulation. While recognizable elements remain, the drawing departs from pure landscape, as

the process of detailed mark-making creates a morphing interplay of imagery, imagination, and illumination. Jesse Schlesinger’s deceptively simple drawing of a bird’s nest, like Roby’s landscape, is an astonishing example of close-looking, virtuosic draftsmanship, and artistic invention. After seeing it, you’ll never look at a nest quite the same again.

▪ Staff Services Specialist: $3,272.00 - $4,175.00

The Beautiful Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

The Tiger Swallowtail butterfly, with its striking yellow and black wings, is one of the most recognizable and beloved butterflies in North America. These graceful insects are named for the distinctive “tiger” stripes on their wings, which can span up to 5.5 inches. Found in a variety of habitats, from forests and fields to suburban gardens, Tiger Swallowtails are active fliers, often seen fluttering around nectar-rich flowers like milkweed, thistles, and lilacs.

There are several species of Tiger Swallowtails, including the Eastern, Western, and Canadian, each adapted to their specific regions. Their life cycle begins as eggs laid on the leaves of host plants, such as tulip trees, wild cherry, and willow. The caterpillars, initially resembling bird droppings as a form of camouflage,

eventually transform into green, snake-like larvae with large eye spots, designed to deter predators. After pupating in a chrysalis, they emerge as the magnificent butterflies we see.

Tiger Swallowtails are not just beautiful but also play a crucial role in pollination, contributing to the health of ecosystems. Their presence in a garden is a sign of a healthy environment, making them both a delight to observe and an important part of nature’s balance.

This is a special year as the community celebrates a CENTURY of Modoc Football. Gates open at 4:45 pm, with the JV football team kicking-off at 5:30 pm. Modoc High School principal Kristen Budmark reflects on football as some of her favorite times to reflect on.

“What an honor it is to be a part of all things Braves. It’s a beautiful thing to get to watch my husband coach my boys. He loves the game and he loves them.

My heart swells every time I salute our flag and listen to the loud country’s National Anthem on our football field. It never gets old hearing our players, cheerleaders, coaches, community & fans yell “Braves,” at the end.

Here’s to the next 100 years of Modoc Football,” says Principal Budmark. So many Modocers can reflect on the many Friday night lights they have witnessed and been a part of whether that be playing and then one day watching their children play. “Pride, integrity, honor”, 3 words that describe Modoc High School Football, according to Coach Dominic Budmark. Modoc Football has always played a big part in the community and it is so remarkable to see what an impact it has on so many hearts. Principal Budmark shared how this time of year makes her feel, “I love the tradition. Dom coached Wyatt and now they are coaching together. It’s a legacy. A generational blessing.”

SURPRISE VALLEY ELECTRIC CUSTOMERS NOTICE:

Have you noticed higher electric bills this spring and summer

That’s because they are!

As of February 1st, Surprise Valley Electric increased rates 22% for residential and small business customers and 27% for irrigation.

I’m Ron Ketler and members of the community have asked me to run for Surprise Valley Electric Director of District 2, which includes Canby, Cal Pines, Likely, Madeline, Termo, and the Alturas area.

My wife Julie and I own the Kelley Hot Spring fish farm in Canby. It’s a family run farm, that includes our son Jacob, his wife Jessica (mom of our 3 grandsons), Jessica’s father Cole and her brother Joe Breakfield.

Not everyone is aware that Surprise Valley Electric is an Electric Cooperative. That means that it is owned by the members. (Us!) The definition of an electric cooperative is a private, not for profit company whose purpose is to safely deliver electricity to its consumers or members , at the most affordable price possible.

My goal as a director would be to make sure that it is indeed provided to you at the most affordable price possible.

My years of experience running a large successful business gives me the expertise necessary to be able to spot areas where things could be managed efficiently and ways to save and update equipment and supplies.

If keeping rates low is also your goal for a director, I would appreciate your vote.

To vote for me, come to the annual Surprise Valley Electric Meeting on Sept 6, anytime between 3-5:30 pm. You can drive through, vote, and pick up your free tritip dinner, $25 voucher, and swag bag at the same time.

I will also be at the Surprise Valley Electric building from 2-3 on that day, to answer any questions you may have for me. I would appreciate the opportunity to serve you and keep our cooperative serving the community.

Modoc JV Volleyball Team Shows Early Promise in Season Opener

The Modoc JV Volleyball team kicked off their season with two exciting matches, showcasing their determination and growth despite only having a few practices under their belt.

On August 20, the team faced Lassen High in a challenging game and lost 16-25, 21-25. However, the girls bounced back with an impressive win against Enterprise High School on August 22, securing a hard-fought victory with scores of 22-25, 26-24, and 15-13.

The combined stats for the two games highlight the team’s all-around effort. Abby DePaul led with 5 aces, 1 kill, and 1 block. Aubrey HamiltonStevens also contributed with 5 aces and 1 kill.

Vivian Huang showed her versatility with 2 aces, 4 kills, and 12 digs, while Maddy Moltzen supported with 2 kills, 15 digs, and 11 receptions. Laila Hill added 4 aces and 6 kills,

and Ella Battram was solid defensively with 18 digs and 20 receptions. Kaylee Kendall chipped in with 1 ace.

Coach Wheeler expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “I was impressed by their perseverance in the fight to beat Enterprise. It’s going to be a fun season.”

In their first home game, despite the girls hard work and efforts JV lost to Lassen 25-14, 25-8 on Tuesday night.

The JV girls go to the Emblem F tournament in Fall River Thursday and Saturday. Fans and community members are encouraged to come out and support the team as they continue to develop and strive for success this season.

Cultivates Flowers and Passion for Pollinators at Wild Sky Farm

Wild Sky Farm, a budding flower farm in Cedarville, is capturing the community’s attention with its vibrant blooms and commitment to sustainable agriculture. Owned and operated by Kermit McCourt and his son Wilder, the farm is more than just a family business—it’s a labor of love for flowers and insects.

“Wilder and I have a love for flowers and insects. We know that pollinators need food, and we absolutely love looking at flowers, so we decided to grow as many flowers as our backyard could handle. We have a small caterpillar tunnel that

extends our season and gives our flowers that love heat, a nice little sauna,” Kermit says.

Kermit explained that the motivation behind starting Wild Sky Farm was to offer his son Wilder a hands-on education in agriculture and business.

“We started this business to give Wilder the opportunity to learn how to manage production, understand profit and loss, and start saving for his future,” he said.

Now in their second year of focusing on flowers, Wild Sky Farm has become a proud supplier for Nourish Food Hub.

Kermit noted, “Every year we learn a little more about location, water amounts, and what the insects are doing. We don’t use any sprays or chemicals. By closely observing our plants, we can understand their needs and ensure a healthy environment.”

The farm practices no-till farming, uses

composting, and adds the right minerals to the soil, emphasizing sustainability and care for the environment. “We believe that by amending the soil correctly, we create a thriving habitat for our plants and the pollinators that visit them,” Kermit added. With their dedication to sustainable practices and a focus on community, Wild Sky Farm looks forward to continuing to provide beautiful flowers for Modoc County and beyond.

KYLE WEBER RE-ELECT

SVEC District 2

Fighting to keep your power costs the lowest in CA

Don’t be mislead: a recent rate increase = just 2 cents/kw hour for both residential and irrigation customers

Residential SVEC members pay .1085 cents/kw hour vs the CA average of 35 cents/kw hour

Irrigation rates remain low at 093 cents/kw hour which is 1/3 the cost of the state average

Your directors manage power costs despite drastic inflation nationwide on all consumer goods

Committed to maintaining safe, reliable service for our member-owners

If you cannot attend the Annual Meeting, support the Board and Kyle by naming the Board as your proxy, which can be sent by mail, dropped off, or turned in at the Annual Meeting

“My family has been living in Modoc County for four generations My kids live here and I want to keep providing safe and affordable energy for them, and our community, for years to come. That’s what I’ve been doing and exactly what I’ll keep doing if re-elected.”

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and

If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this internet website http:// search.nationwideposting. com/propertySearchTerms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2400290238 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (916)939-0772, or visit this internet website http:// search.nationwideposting. com/propertySearchTerms. aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2400290238 to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. If the sale is set aside for any reason,

the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid.

The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney.
