Nationally recognized motivational speaker and former Miss R.I., Ashley Bendiksen, visited Modoc County teens on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Focusing on the importance of healthy relationships, positive mental health, and understanding teen dating violence, Ashley gave two highly impactful presentations as part of a campaign by Modoc County community partners for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Thirty-three percent of adolescents in America are victims of sexual, physical, verbal, or emotional dating abuse with only one-third of those individuals ever telling anyone about their situation. Additionally, teens who suffer dating abuse are subject to long-term consequences like alcoholism, eating disorders, promiscuity, thoughts of suicide, and violent behavior.
Unfortunately, U.S. teen domestic violence statistics continue to grow at high rates for a variety of reasons including social media, Hollywood glorification, exposure to domestic violence in homes, and additionally parents simply not knowing how to have sensitive conversations with their teens.
Miss Bendisken’s powerful presentations shared her own experiences with abuse as a teen and young adult and how it led to substance abuse, selfharm, eating disorders,
poor grades, low selfesteem and eventually being disowned by her family and becoming a homeless college dropout before learning that she was not alone, and resources were available all around her. Starting her journey to healing, Ashley began volunteering at her local domestic violence center and was soon asked to share her story. Eventually, this path led Ashley to return to college and graduate as Valedictorian with a degree in Criminal Justice. She devoted her life and career to victim services, spreading awareness by speaking at schools, law enforcement agencies, and more Nationwide.
The Modoc County District Attorney’s Office and Victim Services Department partnered with community and law enforcement agencies to bring these presentations to students from Modoc High School, Modoc Middle School, Warner High School, Modoc Vineyard Academy, and Surprise Valley High & Middle Schools thanks to the Modoc Crisis Center generously providing the
funding to bring Miss Bendiksen to Modoc County.
Agencies in attendance included Alturas Police Department, Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, Modoc County Probation, Calif. Highway Patrol, Modoc Crisis Center, Strong Family Health Center, Modoc County Behavioral Health, Calif. Tribal TANF, and the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office. Organizations set up tables with both information and resource sheets for students to learn about what options are available to them and giveaway items such as domestic violence awareness bracelets, keychains, and more. Schools were also left with guides for staff to support students and recognize warning signs. If you or someone you know are a victim of domestic violence in need of services, you may call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800799-7233, Modoc County Victim Services at 530233-3311, or the Modoc Crisis Center at 530-2334575.

The SEALS after school program students will be donating stockings to a deployed Army Infantry unit and the Reno Veterans Hospital.
In Modoc County, the holiday season holds special significance for the SEALS After-school program and its staff.
Modoc County Office of Education Superintendent Mike Martin shared, “Many of our staff have served or have family who have served. My own son enlisted, and that personal connection makes this project truly meaningful. One of our staff members has a son currently deployed, we really want to make sure that we are teaching our kids about patriotism and gratitude.”
2nd grader Paisley Mohr expressed her pride, saying, “We color cards for soldiers to make them happy because they protect us.” Another student, 2nd grader Dutch
Yarberry, added, “We draw pictures and letters for the soldiers that are fighting for us. They won’t be with their kids for Christmas and we want to tell them thank you.”
For the second year, MCOE has expanded “Thankful Thursdays” with the “Holiday Stockings for Heroes” initiative, inviting the community, preschool, and after-school families to contribute heartfelt care packages for deployed soldiers. This program not only teaches kids about supporting those who serve but also instills patriotism and gratitude. 5th grader Jacob Ertle emphasized the importance of appreciation, stating, “We can send them stuff for Christmas because they won’t be with family and I hope that will make their day.” Vera Wilson, a 4th grader, noted, “I like writing to the soldiers and making the cards the best, it makes people happy.
We are grateful for the people in the army and maybe it will give them happy tears.”
“It’s about more than just gifts,” said SEALS Director Brittany Thomas. “We want our heroes to know they are not forgotten, and we appreciate their sacrifices.”
The “Holiday Stockings for Heroes” drive is part of a nationwide effort aiming to support our troops. Their goal is to send 40,000 stockings to soldiers being deployed. The SEALS program has made a goal of 400 stockings from Modoc. 4th grader Kyla Stillwell said, “We are celebrating the people that help keep us safe and making them smile while they are working for Christmas. I think we can send 300 stockings this year. It makes them so happy. There is good stuff in there.”
Superintendent Mike Martin praised the
community’s support, saying, “The excitement of the kids is remarkable. We want to challenge other agencies and businesses to help meet this growing need. The SEALS efforts have united our town in supporting our troops. Last year they stuffed 287 stockings to send. We couldn’t have done
that without the help and support of our community. The kids made a big goal of 400 this year!”
7th grader Kaylin Mohr remarked, “I like working with the younger kids to show them how to be grateful, to show them how important it is and hopefully it sticks with them. It makes the
veterans so happy and they know they did a good job and we are thankful.” Stockings will be assembled by SEALS students in the coming weeks. Donation Collection Dates: October 28th to November 20th. Donations can be dropped off at Modoc County Office of Education (MCOE), the MCOE Early Childhood Development CenterAlturas State Preschool, Holiday Market, Grocery Outlet, Plumas Bank, Modoc Vineyard Academy, and all SEALS classrooms.
This year, SEALS students are creating Christmas cards for the community to sign at MCOE, the MCOE Early Childhood Development Center - Alturas State Preschool, Plumas Bank, US Bank, and the Modoc Medical Center Gift Shop.
Requested items include beef jerky, nuts, singleserving flavored drink packets, card games, puzzle books, gum, sunflower seeds, holiday candy, socks, gloves, chapstick, fruit rollups, fruit by the foot, fruit gummies, candy canes, christmas candy, playing cards, small notepads, pens, stress balls, and letters of thanks.

The Varsity Football team dominated Mt. Shasta with an impressive 49-7 victory.
The entire team delivered a standout performance, allowing Modoc to take a commanding lead in the first half. This early advantage gave every player on the Modoc roster a chance to contribute on the field.
Coach Wyatt Valena states, “The team as a whole played extremely well.”
Quarterback Chris Gensel was solid in the air, completing several passes, and also showed his versatility by rushing into the end zone for a touchdown. In the second half, Owen Romesha led the rushing offense,
serving as the reliable workhorse for the team.
On defense, Danny Rawls excelled at cornerback, making an interception and multiple key tackles.

Two Republican Party candidates are running from the California State Assembly District 1 — both of whom advanced from the primary election in March of this year.
Both mothers and local to northern California, Heather Hadwick and Tenessa Audette are running head to head in the upcoming election on Nov. 5.
The two have made appearances in Modoc to promote their campaigns.
On Oct. 23, Modoc County Farm Bureau hosted a meet-the-candidate night at Alturas City Hall. At Alturas City Hall, the two shared their views, answered questions and discussed their plans for office.
The California State Assembly is the lower house of the California State Legislature.
This group convenes along with the State Senate in Sacramento. By winning the election, the selected assemblywoman from District 1 is poised to bring rural issues to the capital. Here’s what you need to know:
HEATHER HADWICK
Hadwick was raised in Dorris, California. She married her high school sweetheart in 2003 and is a mother to two boys. Together, they run a family farm in Modoc County growing hay, vegetables and pumpkins and raising cattle. The farm is home to Modoc County’s only pumpkin patch each fall.
Hadwick attended Shasta College and Chico State for agriculture science. In 2016, she earned her master’s degree in leadership and management. Hadwick teaches a public safety
class at Modoc High School and serves as the county’s 4-H coordinator through the University of California in Davis.
For the last five year, Hadwick has served as the Deputy Office of Emergency Services Director and Public Information Officer for Sheriff’s Office, organizing evacuations due to wildfires and flooding, coordinating support and managing recovery.
On the issues, the Sacramento Bee reported that her campaign centers on the economy, specifically taxes, cost of living and jobs, as well as wildfire prevention and the agriculture industry. In her candidate statement, Hadwick shared she’s opposed to California’s pro-choice laws and want to “abolish soft-oncrime laws, hold criminal accountable for their actions and discontinue Sanctuary City policies protecting criminal illegal immigrants.”
TENESSA AUDETTE
Mother of three, Tenessa Audette is the current mayor of Redding, California. She earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Sonoma State University. Audette owns Called to Action Inc., specializing in campaign management for City Council, County Supervisor, District Attorney, Congressional, Assembly and Government races.
For the last five years, Audette has worked in the California Legislature as a district representative for the State Senate District 1. Audette was selected by her fellow council
members to replace the outgoing Redding mayor in December of 2023. On the issues, the Sacramento Bee reported that her budget priorities are public safety, ensuring adequate accommodations for those choosing to break the law and law enforcement staffing; wildfire mitigation and forest fuel reduction; road work allocations, not tied to pet projects or rarely used transportation entitlements; reduction of red tape, regulations, fees and taxes.
In Audette’s candidate statement, she wrote her platform is conservative and straightforward, supporting the second amendment, right to life and business. She wants to “protect prop 13, protect ag, protect water” and “reduce taxes and regulations.”
She is also focused on wildfire prevention through forest management, supporting law enforcement and locking up criminals, parental rights in education, tougher border security and fair and secure elections.
ON THE ISSUES
On issues related to the economy and jobs, Hadwick wishes to put an end to wasteful government spending, create more jobs that pay well and boost the economy, according to her website. She believes in supporting, not overregulating, local small business owners and farmers.
For economic development, Audette wishes to revitalize rural northern California. She believes the district needs robust economic development that
attracts new businesses, creates jobs and expands opportunities for residents. Audette said on her website she will champion policies that reduce regulatory barriers, promote entrepreneurship and invest in infrastructure and technology to attract industries to the region. Both candidates are right to life. Hadwick opposed California’s sanctuary state abortion laws that unrestricted late-term abortions that cost taxpayers millions, according to her website. She said she will fight for policies and resources that support North State families. Audette believes in protecting the rights of the unborn. On her website, she said she will work to enact policies that promote alternatives to abortion, provide support to expectant mothers and make sure all lives, from conception to natural death, are valued and protected.
Both candidates have put wildlife prevention in their campaign focus. Hadwick stated she is committed to effective wildfire prevention measures that prioritize
safety of the community, homes and preservation of northern California. On her website, she said she believes in proactive action, including clearing overgrowth, fire mitigation funding and education prevention programs to reduce the risk of wildfires, along with empowering firefighters and protecting the beauty of northern California and its Resources. Similarly, Audette believes addressing the threat of wildfires requires proactive forest management strategies. On her website, Audette said she will prioritize investments in forest health initiatives, support controlled burns and promote collaboration between federal, state and local agencies. On taxes and the cost of living, Hadwick believes families are struggling to make ends meet. She said she will fight to suspend the gas tax and make California more affordable for middle class families. Similarly, Audette believes families and

small businesses deserve relief from excessive taxes and regulations.
She said she will fight for lower taxes, simplification of the tax code and incentives that encourage entrepreneurship and economic growth.
While not mentioned in Audette’s campaign, Hadwick said she is committed to practical solutions that solve homelessness, calling homeless encampments that crowd schools and neighborhoods unacceptable.
Hadwick
said Sacramento has failed California for passing new laws and spending taxpayer dollars without results. She wants to “fight to clean up our streets and enforce policies that put people in shelters, keeping our communities safe.”
On housing, Audette said the lack of affordable housing is a pressing issue in the North State.
“I will advocate for policies that streamline the housing development process, incentivize affording housing projects and empower local communities to address their unique needs,” she said.
On crime and public safety, Hadwick believes officers are asked to do more with less.
“Sacramento politicians hand criminals get-outof-jail free cards and cut funding from law enforcement,” Hadwick stated on her website.
Audette said she will work closely with law
enforcement agencies, prioritize community policing and support initiatives that address the root of the crime. Both candidates have stances on agriculture related to the economy. Hadwick said she understands the unique challenges that farmers face and that California farmers need clean and reliable water. She said she will fight for more water storage funding and advocate for the resources farmers need to thrive for future generations.
On agriculture, Audette said she will work tirelessly to support farmers and ranchers, advocate for fair trade policies, invest in agricultural innovation and protect farmlands for future generations to come. Audette also wants to prioritize investments in water storage infrastructure, including reservoirs and groundwater recharge projects, to ensure a reliable water supply for the region.
While not mentioned in Hadwick’s campaign stances, Audette said she wants to ensure that rural communities in the North State have access to excellent schools, skilled teachers and resources that prepare students for success. “I will fight for fair funding, expanded broadband access and vocational training programs that meet the unique needs of our rural students,” Audette stated on her website.
