Weidner Sentenced in 2023 DUI Crash That Injured Several Pedestrians

Mindy Weidner was sentenced Wednesday in connection with a DUI crash on Aug. 27, 2023, that left several pedestrians seriously injured.

Weidner pleaded guilty to felony charges of driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or higher and causing injury, along with enhancements for excess blood alcohol, great bodily injury to three victims, brain injury/paralysis, and bodily injury to multiple victims. She also pleaded guilty to carrying a loaded, concealed, and unregistered firearm.

As part of a plea agreement, Weidner received an eightyear suspended prison sentence. The terms include two years in county jail, eight years of formal felony probation, the use of a SCRAM

alcohol monitoring device, 100 hours of community service, and mandatory DUI education classes. If Weidner violates any of the conditions, she will be required to serve the full eight-year prison term.

During the sentencing hearing, victims and their families described the lasting impact of the crash, which they said has changed their lives forever.

The District Attorney’s Office and Victim Services Department provided support to the victims throughout the process.

Prosecutors emphasized the recklessness of Weidner’s actions, which they said endangered multiple lives. The court’s decision aims to hold Weidner accountable while providing an opportunity for rehabilitation under strict supervision.

Firefighters Use Jaws of Life in Sage Hen Accident; No Serious Injuries Reported

On Saturday morning, emergency responders were called to a singlevehicle accident on Sage Hen Road involving a Ford pickup traveling southbound at approximately 65 mph in unsafe weather conditions. The vehicle overturned and landed on its side preventing the occupant from being able to evacuate, prompting a swift response from the Likely Volunteer Fire Department, CHP and Cal Fire.

Using the hydraulic rescue tool commonly known as the “Jaws of Life,” firefighters worked with precision to safely extract the driver from the overturned truck. The driver was transported to Modoc Medical Center with suspected minor injuries, while emergency personnel administered on-site care.

Authorities praised the prompt actions of the emergency teams, emphasizing the importance of specialized

equipment in ensuring a successful rescue operation. Despite the dramatic nature of the crash, no serious injuries were reported.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Officials highlighted the hazardous weather conditions as a likely contributing factor and reminded residents to exercise caution when driving in rural areas, particularly during adverse weather.

“Make sure to check the traction and tread on your tires, monitor your speed, and leave adequate distance between your vehicle and others,” advised Officer Skiles. “Stay alert for shadows and icy patches, especially during freezing conditions.”

Drivers are urged to stay vigilant and adjust their driving habits to accommodate road and weather conditions to prevent accidents like this one.

Man Injured in Adin

Pass Crash, Dog Ruby in Safe Hands

A man traveling through Adin Pass on Thursday night was involved in a single-vehicle accident that resulted in injuries, requiring medical treatment. His loyal companion, a dog named Ruby, was with him at the time of the crash but fortunately was unharmed.

The man, identified as Donald Smith, was traveling eastbound on Highway 299 when, for reasons unknown, his

Ford Fusion veered off the road and down an embankment, ultimately colliding with a tree.

Smith sustained injuries and was transported to Modoc Medical Center for treatment. The cause of the accident has been investigated and the case is now closed.

Ruby, who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, was taken in by CHP officers and brought to the local sheriff’s office. Correctional staff have

since ensured Ruby has been well cared for while her owner recovers. The staff reported that Ruby has been a welcome presence, lifting spirits around the office.

A family member was expected to pick Ruby up on Monday. Meanwhile, thoughts and prayers from the community are with Smith for a speedy recovery, so he and Ruby can be reunited soon.

Letters to the editor

Dear Editor,

Yesterday while shopping in Alturas I saw a woman wearing a sweatshirt that said “San Francisco Ballet” on it, so I stopped her and engaged her in conversation. She said her husband works for the SF Ballet and that they have a second home here in Modoc County (aka God’s Country). Then I surprised her when I said that as a senior in high school in 1967 I bought tickets for my sister and me to see the late great Rudolph Nureyev dance the Romeo and Juliet ballet with the late great Dame Fonteyn at the Hollywood Bowl. The look on that woman’s face was priceless, she probably thought at first I was some backwoods inbred hayseed.

Way back in the 1980s my first wife (ex-wife as of 2003 and mother of my four kids) and I had season tickets for several years in a row to Davies Hall in SF because we are both pianists (and I compose neoclassical music for piano) and devout lovers of classical music.

I have to wonder if there are ever any classical music performances by anyone here in Modoc County. I realize there’s no symphony orchestra here (at least not to my knowledge) but perhaps high school kids perform classical music or some random musicians in our county occasionally perform classical pieces somewhere?

Unpredictable Weather Patterns Keep Modoc

Residents Guessing

Modoc County experienced a whirlwind of weather this last week, as locals woke up to a blanket of snow, only to see the skies clear for sunshine by midday, followed by a sudden downpour in the afternoon. The region’s notoriously variable climate left residents marveling at the unpredictability of their day. Such rapid shifts are not uncommon for Modoc County, where transitional seasons often bring a mix of snow, rain, and sunshine within a single 24-hour period. This dynamic weather pattern can make planning daily activities a challenge, as even the best forecasts

may struggle to account for sudden changes. The interplay between the cold air masses descending from the mountains and warmer, wetter systems moving inland often results in these unpredictable patterns.

For residents, the solution lies in preparedness. Experts recommend keeping an eye on trusted weather forecasts, such as those from the National Weather Service, and dressing in layers to adapt to the changing conditions.

As Modoc County embraces its trademark climate, one thing is certain: no two days are ever the same.

Holiday Travel Safety: Stay Safe this Holiday Season

With the holiday season underway, millions of Americans are expected to travel by car to visit loved ones or enjoy winter vacations. However, icy roads, unpredictable weather, and heavy traffic can make holiday travel dangerous if drivers aren’t prepared.

To ensure a safe journey please take the necessary precautions: Prepare Your Vehicle

• Check Tires: Ensure tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread. Consider snow tires for areas prone to ice and snow.

• Inspect Your Battery: Cold weather can reduce battery performance. Have it tested to ensure reliability.

• Stock an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as a flashlight, blankets, water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and a phone charger. If traveling in snowy regions, pack an ice scraper, shovel, and sand or kitty litter for traction.

• Top Off Fluids: Use

windshield washer fluid designed for freezing temperatures and check antifreeze levels.

Plan Ahead

• Monitor Weather Conditions: Check forecasts for your route and adjust travel plans if necessary.

• Share Your Itinerary: Inform someone of your expected arrival time and route.

• Avoid Peak Times: Travel during off-peak hours to reduce stress and risks associated with heavy traffic.

Drive Safely

• Reduce Speed: Slick roads require slower speeds to maintain control and allow for longer stopping distances.

• Increase Following Distance: Leave extra space between vehicles in case of sudden stops.

• Avoid Distractions: Focus on the road and avoid texting or adjusting navigation systems while driving.

• Wear Seat Belts: Ensure all passengers are

Be Prepared for Delays

Unexpected delays due to weather, traffic, or accidents are common during the holidays. Pack extra snacks, water, and entertainment to keep passengers comfortable during extended waits.

Stay Alert

• Avoid Fatigue: Get a good night’s sleep before traveling. Share driving duties if possible.

• Don’t Drive Impaired: Arrange for a designated driver or use a rideshare service if drinking is part of your holiday celebrations.

Law enforcement and safety officials urge drivers to remain cautious and patient on the roads. Planning ahead and taking extra precautions can ensure a safe and stress-free holiday season for all.

Domestic Violence has life-long effects on children

Domestic Violence from a kids’s perspective

Did you know?

We see, hear, remember and worry about much more than grown-ups think we do. You may think we’re asleep or not listening, but we know you’re fighting. We are more likely to be abused in a home where abuse is already happening.

I knew I should call 911, but he is my dad I wanted to protect her, but I didn’t know how My friends can’t come over anymore I hate it when they yell I don’t know why we don’t just leave I’m afraid of what might happen when I go to school 9 yr old boy

Listen to us!

“We need your help We’ve been hurt We’ve seen & heard bad things We wish you can help us and make us feel safe again ” 6 yr old girl

If we tell you there’s fighting at home or if you’re worried about us, please help! Don’t be afraid to ask us what’s going on at home. Tell us you’re a safe person we can talk to Thank us for having the courage to tell you Remind us the violence is not our fault Call the numbers on this ad for more help Help us make a safety plan

A Safety Plan

Prepare: Talk to us about how to be safe and how to practice our plan with an adult we trust. Leave: Tell us where we can go to be safe, like a safe place in our home or neighborhood. Ask for help: Teach us how to call 911 and how to talk to adults we trust when we need help. Never get in the middle: Help us understand that it is not our job to stop the violence.

Keep us safe!

Grown-ups talk about “Stranger Danger” and fire safety. We need you to talk to us about how to stay safe when violence is happening in our homes, too.

How we respond to violence. Some of us respond differently to violence, but we may respond by having trouble sleeping, having stomach aches or headaches, or wetting the bed. We may get in trouble or start getting bad grades. We may feel angry, confused, sad, lonely, guilty, and afraid for you and for ourselves.

Historical Society Opens Time Capsule at Modoc

High After 50 Years

History is a beautiful thing. Whether it is family history, world history, or even a small piece of local history, we can all agree that there is something special about taking a step back in time and learning something new. In 1974, during the

building of the Modoc High School (MHS) Griswold Gymnasium, a time capsule was placed behind a plaque honoring the Board of Trustees, the Superintendent, and the architectural and contracting teams who were behind the building of the facility. It was placed next to an additional plaque which was dedicated to former Modoc High coach and teacher Wally Griswold whom the gymnasium is named after. With the plan to open the capsule in 2024,

masons covered it with the plaque, making it a hidden gem within the gym’s main lobby. The contents of the time capsule included maps, information on the gym’s construction, newspaper copies, Chamber of Commerce pamphlets, MHS school sports records, and more, all donated by a number of local organizations.

BIG VALLEY GROUNDWATER BASIN ADVISORY COMMITTEE

MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. Veteran’s Memorial Hall, 657-575 Bridge Street, Bieber, CA 96009

At the Monday, December 2, 2024 meeting, we will be discussing the Big Valley Basin water budget tool, basin boundary modification and providing an update on the Big Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) Implementation

What is the Big Valley Groundwater Basin Advisory Committee (BVAC)?

The BVAC is the committee formed to advise the Lassen and Modoc Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) during development and implementation of the Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP).

What is a Groundwater Sustainability Plan?

A GSP is a detailed planning document, required by the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) that establishes a groundwater budget, minimum thresholds, and management actions to achieve long-term sustainability.

What has happened since the adoption of the revised of the GSP in April 2024?

On April 2, 2024, the GSAs obtained grant funding to implement the recommendations from the GSP. During this meeting, we will be providing an update on the GSP implementation actions and their status. If

In October of this year, Modoc County Historical Society (MCHS) member and 1953 MHS graduate, Janice Brennan Flynn came across the original newspaper article from 1974 and shared it with fellow MCHS members. When MCHS reached out to school district officials, they were unaware the little piece of history existed but were excited to take part in the unveiling of the capsule with Flynn receiving the honor of opening and announcing the contents.

Several individuals from MCHS were in attendance for the unveiling of the time capsule along with Modoc County Joint Unified School District (MJUSD) superintendent Tom O’Malley, MHS Assistant Principal Todd Hughes, school board

members Monica Widby and RuthAnn Criner, and finally, taking the pivotal role of gaining access to the capsule, MJUSD Director of Facilities, Maintenance and Transportation, Doug Waterman.

MHS staff and students have begun the process of planning for the next time capsule to be placed and opened in 50 years in hopes of making this a long-standing tradition. They have set a goal to place the new capsule during the annual Block M Basketball Tournament in December. Contents of the 1974 capsule will be placed at the Modoc County Museum where individuals will be able to view them when the museum reopens in May of 2025, but in the meantime, those interested can view images of many of the items on the MCHS Facebook page.

Heather Hadwick Wins District 1 Assembly Election with Overwhelming Support

Heather

has been elected as the new representative for District 1 in the California State Assembly, capturing more than 60% of the vote and securing victories in all 11 counties that make up the district. With a strong mandate from voters, Hadwick is set to represent Siskiyou, Shasta, Modoc, Lassen, Plumas, Sierra, Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, Alpine, and Amador Counties.

Hadwick, a longtime resident of Modoc County, is deeply committed to advocating for the people of rural California. A background in Emergency Management and Education, combined with her strong ties to the community, make her well-equipped to tackle the challenges facing the district.

“I am honored and humbled by the trust the people of District 1 have placed in me,” said Hadwick. “I look forward to serving our rural communities and ensuring that our voices are heard in Sacramento. This victory is not just mine— it’s a victory for every family, farmer, and small business in our district. I will work tirelessly to address the unique needs

of our region and advocate for policies that reflect the values and priorities of our communities. What we have in District 1 is special.”

Heather and her husband Bryon celebrated 21 years of marriage this year. Bryon is a District Conservationist for Natural Resource Conservation Service.

Together they have two sons, Sam (19), a college student in Nebraska on a shooting sports scholarship, and Zack (16), a junior at Modoc High School, and bonus daughter, Shayla (18), who is studying nursing at Shasta College. Alongside her family, she operates a farm in Modoc County where they raise highland cattle, grow hay and vegetables, and cultivate cut flowers. The Hadwick family also runs the only pumpkin patch in Modoc County each October, a beloved local tradition.

Raised in Siskiyou County, Hadwick understands the challenges faced by rural Californians and is dedicated to ensuring that the voices of rural communities are heard and represented.

“We are a proud, resilient community, and my goal is to be a strong

voice for rural California,” Hadwick added. “I am excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work, advocating for the issues that matter most to us— protecting our agricultural heritage, supporting small businesses, and ensuring our children have access to a quality education, just to name a few.”

Hadwick’s victory is a testament to the broad support across the district. She received votes from all corners of the region, affirming her position as a representative who understands and reflects the diverse needs of her constituents. Heather was endorsed by outgoing Assemblywoman Megan Dahle, Senator Brian Dahle, California Professional Firefighters, Calfire Local 2881, California Association of Highway Patrolmen, CA YIMBY, California Labor Federation, NorCal Carpenters and many local elected officials, first responders, educators, loggers, farmers, ranchers and community leaders.

As she prepares to take office, Hadwick is committed to making a difference in Sacramento by championing policies that prioritize the future of rural California.

CDL License Option for Modoc

After 2 years of trying to bring a CDL program to Modoc, we have realized that our best option is to partner again with Shasta College like we successfully did a few years ago. There is more support for the enrollment process this year, and more instructors. The cost for the Behind the Wheel course is only $90. A student may apply for a FAFSA grant to cover that cost. The college also has a partnership with a company, Resilient Careers in Forest, that has agreed to pay all drug testing costs if the student commits to answering a few questions about their employment before and after the course. The first “Behind the

Wheel” class will begin on January 14 and end on March 4, on Tuesdays from 8:00-AM to 2:25 PM or on Jan 13 and ending on March 5, Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 AM to 10:50 AM. The Tuesday advantage would be only needing to go to Redding once a week. Some additional driving time will most likely be required with the instructors to meet the 15 required hours for the license. Shasta College trucks will be used for the DMV test so there is no extra expense to rent a truck. To begin in January, the first step is to sign up for the online CDL Theory course by calling Adult Ed for instructions. Students need to pass the Theory test with an

80% to get their CDL Permit. The online course allows students to retest until they pass. Anyone interested in getting into the January driving course needs to register immediately for Shasta College. A second section for the driving portion will open on March 17 to May 13. If you want help registering for Shasta College and the online Permit Course, or if you want more details, please call Sarah Merrick at TEACH Adult Ed 530233-5399 and leave a number for a return call. Lassen College is also offering a CDL course, but Shasta was ready to partner with us first.

Modoc County Sheriff’s Office Introduces Advanced Drug Detection Technology TruNarc

The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office is taking significant steps to address the escalating Fentanyl crisis and other drugrelated threats with the acquisition of new drug detection technology TruNarc Handheld Narcotics Analyzer.

Using funds from a Homeland Security Grant, the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office has acquired a high-tech drug testing device called TruNarc, valued at $27,000. With the nearest available to the Office in Redding, TruNarc uses infrared light to quickly identify over 500 substances, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, and prescription drug precursors.

One of TruNarc’s key advantages is its ability to test substances without direct contact, detecting drugs through sealed bags, glass, plastic, and even trace residue. The device also features an evolving substance library, allowing law enforcement to identify emerging drug threats as the drug crisis in the United States continues to evolve.

“This device allows us to detect drugs immediately in the field, saving time and leading to faster investigations,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “It’s a gamechanger for all local law enforcement agencies.”

The device is readily available for use by agencies across the county, including Fish and Wildlife, the Alturas Police Department, and California Highway Patrol. It is housed at the Sheriff’s Office but can be transported to field locations within minutes when needed.

The Sheriff’s Office is also prioritizing officer safety as fentanyl overdoses and accidental exposures rise nationwide. Deputies carry two doses of Narcan, a nasal spray used to reverse opioid overdoses, on their person at all times. Narcan is a critical tool for law enforcement responding to overdoses and all first responders who may be exposed to illicit drugs in the air and need to act quickly in the field. Every deputy in the Sheriff’s Office has been trained to

administer Narcan during emergencies. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of Narcan in protecting officers from exposure to fentanyl, which can be up to 100 times stronger than morphine.

The new testing device had been demonstrated in training seminars and real-time investigations, allowing officers to detect drugs more efficiently. Before its acquisition, certain substances could go undetected, delaying critical enforcement actions.

In addition to faster identification, the device supports the Sheriff’s Office’s broader strategy to be prepared to tackle the ongoing Fentanyl and drug crisis happening in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 150 people die daily from fentanyl overdoses in the United States, showing the urgency of local initiatives.

Numerous departments around the country are raving about this new technology brought to law enforcement. A great revelation using TruNarc happened at the Quincy

Police Department in Massachusetts, where they were able to identify an unknown sample of AlphaPVP (“Flakka”) a synthetic cathinone and were able to put a state wide alert out about a drug being on the streets.

Etowah County, Alabama attributes its short court times to TruNarc saying, “We’re able to take cases to the grand jury where before we didn’t have a toxicology report. Now a defendant doesn’t have to wait for his day in court. It’s been a god send.”

The Sheriff’s Office says these measures are part of a larger commitment to protect both the community and first responders as that has always been the forefront of their mission.

“We purchased this to take a proactive approach for all first responders and law enforcement in protecting them from the drug crisis facing our community,” Dowdy stated.

Modoc County Junior High Girls Face Big Competition and Big Weather in Weeks Three

and Four

The Modoc County girls’ Junior High basketball season has officially broken the halfway mark and Modoc Vineyard Academy (MVA) Mustangs, Modoc Middle School (MMS) Warriors and Surprise Valley (SV) Hornets have continued to display their athleticism each week. Week three saw all teams traveling to Tulelake while week four landed athletes able to brave the harsh winter weather in Fall River.

While a local tragedy affected many of the players hitting the court on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Tulelake, the girls were able to keep their momentum and finish the day with all three teams winning every match-up.

MMS Warrior’s silver team faced some tough competition against the Big Valley Cardinals but were still able to earn a 12-8 win. Their second match-up of the day against the Fall River Bulldogs yielded a much bigger win of 26-12 allowing the Warriors to continue their undefeated season.

One of only three gold teams, MVA Mustangs took on Fall River and Tulelake teams again in week three showing their skills and continuing their undefeated season.

Their first match-up was a near-shut-out game with a massive 41-1 win over the Bulldogs to start the day strong. While fighting a little harder, the Tulelake Honkers were able to get on the board but were ultimately no match for the Mustangs and MVA took a 43-12 win to finish the week.

Continuing Modoc County’s momentum for the day, SV Silver Girls won both games against the Honkers and Bulldogs. In their first round, the Hornets were able to overtake the Honker’s strong defense finishing with a win of 13-4. The girls finished their day with both SV and Fall River offense playing hard. The Hornets showed up strong on the court, taking a solid 22-10 win over the Bulldogs putting them at 4-2 for the season. Unfortunately, winter weather interfered with week four travel, and due to orders from the school district’s transportation department, MMS girls were unable to attend the tournament and had to forfeit their games against Burney and Surprise Valley. Several teams additionally played with smaller teams due to many players’ inability to brave the rough trip. Thankfully, MVA and SV were still able to hit the court and bring some heat to the cold winter day. Taking on Tulelake and

Fall River girls yet again, MVA finished week four with a perfect record of 8-0 for the season. With only six players able to attend, the Mustangs were still able to take two huge wins. Their first match with Tulelake yielded a 46-13 victory while their second match against Fall River had a final score of 30-10.

The Hornets, on the other hand, split their day with one win and one loss. Their first game against the Cardinals saw the girls fall short with a 15-7 loss.

In their second match-up, the Hornets took on the Burney Raiders in place of both teams playing the Warriors. In a highly competitive and very close battle, SV was able to win by one point taking a 1211 victory and leaving them at 5-3 for the season.

The Tri Cascade League has two more tournaments in their season with the first being hosted at Modoc High School on Saturday, Dec. 7 and the Tournament of Champions happening Saturday, Dec. 14 in Surprise Valley. Tulelake and MVA teams have opted to forfeit their Dec. 7 matches in exchange for attending a three-day tournament in Janesville which will allow them to expand their skills against new teams.

MMS player Kaylin Mohr uses her long legs to her advantage taking a shot over the Bulldogs defense.

Mustangs Kara Erquiaga shows off her incredible reach with a beautiful jump shot against the Tulelake Honkers.
Hornet’s player Addisyn Pratt holds strong against a swarm of Honker defense.
