A tragic single-vehicle accident on Friday, January 10, 2025, resulted in the death of Jonathan Swift Hurt II, a 62-year-old resident of Reno, Nevada. The fatal collision occurred on US395, north of County Road 53, at approximately 1:08 PM.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Mr. Hurt was driving a maroon 1990 Volkswagen Vanagon Multivan southbound in the designated lane. For reasons yet to be determined, the
vehicle veered off the west roadway shoulder. It then reentered the roadway, crossing both southbound and northbound lanes, before leaving the roadway again on the east side.
The vehicle overturned, and Mr. Hurt, who was ejected during the rollover, sustained fatal injuries.
At this stage of the investigation, authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
The weather was reported to be clear and the road surface
dry, eliminating adverse environmental conditions as contributing factors.
However, the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
The College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California, hosted a United States Forest Service public listening session on December 7, 2024, regarding ancestral homelands of the Pit River Nation. Illmawi Tribal Citizen of the Pit River Nation and campaign advisor to establish the Sáttítla Highlands as a National Monument, Radley Davis, invited RISE youth of the Water Protectors project to speak.
RISE Director, Lisa Craig, transported seven youth to the rally to support the designation of a national monument.
The Sáttítla Highlands, located near Mount Shasta, spans 224,000 acres that stretch across the ShastaTrinity, Klamath and Modoc National Forests. Water Protector youth and the Pit River Nation have sought preservation of land, plant, wildlife habitat and critical water resources for decades. Designation of the sacred land as a National monument would safeguard water resources for millions of Californians.
RISE youth embarked on an early morning journey to join other supporters in the urgent action of using their voices in a respectful manner to communicate their opinions. Many of the youth were intimidated by the crowd having some voices in opposition of a
monument designation. However, after a lunch break, fifth grade Water Protector Samuel Anguiano accepted a leadership role to explain why the Sáttítla Highlands matter. In a resolute and confident voice, Anguiano expressed what the sacred area means to him and his family. He emphasized the importance of clean water for all, and the ongoing struggle to protect Sáttítla from exploitation of resources for the purpose of profit. His short, direct and impactful message set a high standard for all speakers.
On January 7, 2025, the Biden administration officially designated the Sáttítla Highlands as a National Monument. Chairman of the Pit River Nation, Yatch Bamford, stated that the designation preserves factual United States history and is a Tribal and American victory for clean water and healthy lands.
MESA Director, Billie Austin congratulated Craig for mentoring RISE-MESA students in a remarkable action that is part of history. “I will congratulate Samuel in person for his courage, and for recognizing when it is important to make your voice is heard, “ beamed Austin.
Craig has led RISE youth in their service as Water Protectors. She commented on feeling blessed, fortunate to have a part in the youth
project, and being active in the campaign. Craig remarked, “Being present and working to protect sacred sites, to preserve Mother Earth by honoring Sáttítla brings to mind the tremendous support our youth have received from important trainers in the STEM project of Water Protectors, including Gregory Wolfin, D.J. Vanas, Magdalena and Paul Steele, Leah Mudron, Jen Rovanpera and many more.”
“In addition to its tribal cultural significance, Sáttítla is home to the Medicine Lake aquifer, an enormous, pristine hydrological recharge and storage area which nourishes the Fall River Springs system and provides clean water to millions of Californians,” explained Davis. “The vast aquifer system is a reflection of Sáttítla’s unique geology and volcanic activity: The Medicine Lake VolcanoNorth America’s largest shield volcano- provides the foundation for the area’s groundwater stores.”
RISE youth Water Protectors will present a workshop on their project and accomplishments at the California Conference on American Indian Education at CSU, Chico in March 2025. They will explore opportunities to further their service following the exciting development of the Sáttítla National Monument.
Mr. Hurt was traveling alone at the time of the crash, and no other vehicles or individuals were involved.
This incident serves as a solemn reminder of the unpredictability of roadway events and the importance of wearing seat belts at all times. Ejection from a vehicle significantly increases the risk of fatality in a collision. The CHP emphasizes its commitment to promoting road safety and reducing preventable fatalities.
As the community processes this heartbreaking loss, our thoughts and condolences go out to Mr. Hurt’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Such events highlight the fragility of life and the shared responsibility of ensuring safety on the roads.
The CHP, along with local authorities, is committed to determining the circumstances surrounding the accident and providing clarity to those impacted.

When asked about her new appointment, Byrne stated “I am excited to build on the strong foundation laid by past RCRC leadership and work alongside my fellow county leaders to address the unique challenges and opportunities facing rural California. Together, we will advocate for policies that support our communities and ensure a prosperous future for all residents.”

Dear Editor,
I want to draw attention to a problem at our cemetery. The caretaker does a beautiful job of maintaining the grounds, but there is a real problem with varmints. In the summers, its the ground squirrels and now it’s the voles that have dug all over the place. It’s most disturbing when they dig on fresh graves and pile dirt on the headstones. Doesn’t the County have some methods on controlling these critters?
Please check it out.

Dear Editor,
We all watch in sadness the devastation occurring in southern California. Our winter moisture brings spring grass, which all dries up by summer. It usually stays that way until late fall. We should be mindful that when these conditions develop, the same thing can happen here. The Modoc Fire Safe Council (Firewise) can help. Any place there is vegetation too close to a structure, it should be removed before the conditions develop. Firewise gives advice at no charge and will help to clear areas, if warranted. For seniors, veterans, and low-income households, they might be able to do the clearing at no charge.
Please give them a call at 530-233-5516. Their website is modocfiresafecouncil.org. Now is the right time to look into this - they employ out-of-work firefighters to help in these efforts. Anyone who has property needs to be concerned. There is going to be a meeting at the Sheriff’s Annex on January 23 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. That would be an outstanding opportunity to get to know these folks.
Thank you, Bill Price, Cedarville

On January 15th young people in the Friday Night LiveWest (FNL) Chapter will launch a campaign to tackle Modoc County underage drinking. FNL is a youth-led program that builds partnerships for positive and healthy youth development, engages youth as active community leaders, and generates resources to create positive changes on issues that matter to them.
Although underage drinking rates continue to decline, the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) found that young people in 7th, 9th, and 11th grades have engaged in alcohol use in the past month at rates of 4%, 10%, and 14% respectively (CHKS, 2023). Research from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has shown underage alcohol consumption can lead to a variety of risks and dangerous consequences, including impaired judgment, risky behaviors, interference with brain development, and increased risk of developing substance use disorders in adulthood (NIAAA, 2024). Modoc youth in FNL-West are working to create a safer community by promoting healthy alternatives to underage drinking.
A common misconception is that all young people engage in underage drinking. That is perpetuated by movies, television, music, and social media. Those portrayals present a skewed image of youth behavior. As a result, young people may choose to drink rather than feel isolated or out of place.
Social norms (the behaviors and attitudes a group believes are acceptable) significantly influence individual choices. Research shows these norms can shape teens’ behavior and what they think is “normal.”
In response to this, FNL-West youth are launching a multi-media campaign designed to challenge the negative stereotypes about youth and alcohol. They will conduct an education activity at the College Center on January 15th,

An Area Plan is a detailed planning document that provides a vision and regulatory framework for the development and use of a specific geographic area. It is often used to guide growth, development, and land use, ensuring that it aligns with General Plan.
The Susanville Vicinity Area Plan was last updated in 1984, the Johnstonville Area Plan was last updated in 1987, and the Richmond/Gold Run Area Plan was last updated in 1993. These Area Plans no longer reflect the shifts within the community or the changing circumstances that influence the County’s future direction. Updating these plans is essential to address new development trends, community needs, environmental considerations, and economic conditions that have emerged over the past decades.
Kimley-Horn will review the current Area Plans and the General Plan, and develop a comprehensive regional Area Plan Update by integrating longterm visioning collected through community engagement. This Update will establish the foundation for a thriving and resilient community for generations to come.

as part of a Career Fair open to all youth, to kick-off the campaign. The campaign aims to inspire other teens to make empowered decisions about their health and wellbeing, while shifting the broader narrative about youth and alcohol. The FNL members will utilize environmental prevention strategies through youth-led initiatives to educate their peers, neighbors, and local leaders on ways to reduce underage drinking access and mitigate the damages caused to communities resulting from underage drinking. FNL and Club Live youth receive training on data collection, public speaking, creating public service announcements, and leadership and advocacy skills throughout the prevention campaign. It is part of a statewide initiative, that includes forty-five FNL chapters from across California. Chapters receive support from the California Friday Night Live Partnership (CFNLP) through funding provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). Major fires have scorched the Los Angeles area, causing mass evacuations, tremendous damage, deaths and injuries. As of Thursday morning, The California Fire Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported as many as five active incidents: Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia, and Sunset. Collectively, more than 29,000 acres burned. As many as five deaths have been reported, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Other Northstate firefighters are assisting with fires, including four firefighters on the Chico Fire Department OES Engine 8332, announced Wednesday.

“While Northern California has seen significant rainfall, much of Southern California has experienced dry and windy conditions. OES 8332 will join a strike team with adjoining fire departments across Northern California. This is a great example of the mutual aid system at work. We are proud to service communities throughout California.”
The Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday that due to stark contrast in weather patterns, Northern California remains free of wildfire risk.
“Recent months have brought normal to above-average rainfall to much of Northern California, while Southern California has entered an exceptionally dry period. Combine that dryness with an unusually strong Santa Ana wind event, and the fires quickly erupted,” The Bee reported.

Edna Weltha (Oilar) Bell …..97, passed away in Phoenix, AZ on January 6, 2025. She was born on May 19, 1927 in Day, CA. She is one of twelve children born to Leonard and Mazella Oilar. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Bell and later her long-time partner Lee Haven. Also preceding her in death are her daughter, Aldora Bell, granddaughters, Annette Bruce and Aldora Stephens, and her siblings, Doug, Lester, Hiram, Clifford, Dorothy, Tommy and Leona. Edna is survived by her children: Ramona Mideiros (Michael Rudiger), Debbie Bell and Becky (Mark) Stearns. She and Lloyd also helped raise David Fink (deceased) and Viola (Fink) Friedli. There are also numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who benefited from her love.
She is survived by siblings: Dean, Charles, Clayton and Chad Oilar. Edna spent her childhood years in Day, CA. and attended the oneroom school, until High School when she moved to Adin, CA to complete her education. She lived over eight decades at her home in Nubieber, CA where she and Lloyd raised their four daughters. They also opened their home and hearts to grandchildren from time to time. She worked for the Big Valley School District in various capacities for many years as: Bus driver, custodian and whatever else was needed. Suffice it to say, she was a friend and confidant to many children who loved her and looked forward to seeing her most every day. She spent many summers working in the strawberry and potato fields—laughing and telling jokes up and down the aisles, as this back breaking work consumed those long days. She was known for taking her children and cousins to the local swimming hole in her red convertible Oldsmobile. Such fun! She and her sister, Leona, would load up their kids in the car and
visit their grandparents in Day, often threatening to drop the kids off at the “troll bridge” if they didn’t behave. She was active in her small community, belonging to the Ladies Club Hall, among other things. She later purchased the hall and adjacent land. At some point she was jokingly referred to as the Mayor of Nubieber. She camped, hunted and fished with her husband, children and friends. She raised chickens and always had a cow producing milk for their family and others. She learned to be a gardener at a very young age and carried on with this the rest of her life.
She lived in Nubieber until three years ago, when she moved to Phoenix to live with her daughter, Ramona, and son-in-law, Michael, who lovingly cared for her until her death. The Modoc Varsity Lady Braves added another win to their impressive season Tuesday night, defeating the Fall River Bulldogs 39-31 in a defensive showdown. The victory pushed Modoc’s record to 13-6, marking their 10th win in the past 11 games. Senior guard Jordyn Sandage led the Braves with 19 points, her highest-scoring game since December, and added six rebounds.
Sandage’s performance helped the Braves maintain control in a tightly contested matchup. Junior forward Katie Erquiaga contributed 13 rebounds and five steals, continuing her streak of dominance on the boards. She has recorded at least nine rebounds in six consecutive games. Although she scored just one point, her defensive impact was critical in limiting the Bulldogs’
scoring opportunities.
The Braves’ recent success has been fueled by their strong rebounding and defensive efforts, allowing them to average 53.6 points per game over their last 11 contests. Tuesday’s win also marked Modoc’s fourth straight road victory. Fall River (6-8) struggled to find consistency on offense and has now dropped three of its last four games. Despite their
efforts, the Bulldogs were unable to break through Modoc’s disciplined defense.
Modoc will look to extend its winning streak Saturday when it travels to Trinity to face the Wolves with JV girls starting at 1:00 pm. The Varsity Lady Braves face a tough test against a Trinity squad riding a five-game winning streak.

The Modoc Braves pulled off an impressive comeback victory against Hoopa Valley, defeating them 35-29 in an exciting and hard-fought game. Both teams started evenly in the first quarter, with each scoring 5 points. However, Hoopa Valley found their rhythm in the second quarter, outpacing Modoc with a 13-4 scoring run. By halftime, Hoopa Valley
held a comfortable 18-9 lead, leaving Modoc with an uphill battle. The Braves came alive in the third quarter, showcasing their resilience and determination. Their offense surged with a 14-point effort, while their defense worked hard to limit Hoopa Valley to just 9 points. This shift narrowed the gap, setting up a dramatic final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Modoc took complete control of the game. Their defense held Hoopa Valley to just 2 points, while the offense led with a 12-point performance. This strong finish secured the victory for Modoc, completing their comeback.
Ashton Lauppe led the Braves with a standout performance, scoring a game-high 12 points. Damion Johnson
followed closely with 11 points, contributing crucial baskets to fuel Modoc’s comeback.
The game highlighted Modoc’s ability to stay composed under pressure and deliver when it mattered most. Their fourth-quarter dominance, combined with strong individual performances, proved to be the deciding factor in this closely contested match.
The Modoc Braves carried their momentum into Tuesday night’s rematch against the Fall River Bulldogs, coming out victorious with a 5138 win. This marked the Braves’ fourth consecutive win and their second triumph over the Bulldogs this season, having secured a 59-43 victory in December.
Modoc’s success was powered by another outstanding performance from Sutton Cockrell, who led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Cockrell also set a new career-high with four assists, showcasing his versatility on the court. Junior Adin Benson contributed significantly, dominating the boards with 14 rebounds and adding seven points.
The Modoc High School JV Girls basketball team delivered a commanding performance on Monday, Jan. 13, with a 67-9 victory over Hoopa Valley. The Lady Braves set the tone early, scoring an impressive 41 points in the first quarter and maintaining a steadfast defense throughout the game.
According to MaxPreps, Vivian Huang led the scoring with 16 points, followed closely by Addy Williams with 14 points and Maddy Moltzen contributing 13 points. Additional contributions from other Braves players rounded out the dominant offensive effort.
The Lady Braves’ relentless defense held Hoopa Valley to single digits, ensuring a decisive win. The team’s impressive teamwork and determination were on full display, showcasing their potential for the remainder of the season.
Modoc’s win highlighted their consistency on offense and ability to capitalize on Fall River’s struggles. The Bulldogs, who were looking to bounce back after three consecutive losses, found themselves unable to match the Braves’ intensity. Fall River’s record now stands at 5-7, as they’ve lost five of their last six contests. Looking ahead, both teams face tough upcoming matchups. Modoc will take on Trinity, who are riding a three-game winning streak, at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile, Fall River faces the formidable Weed Cougars, who have won six straight games, on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Modoc’s ability to maintain their strong rebounding and consistent scoring will be key as they continue their push into the latter part of the season. Fans are eager to see if the Braves can extend their winning streak and build on their recent successes.
The Braves continued to excel in second-chance opportunities, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds for the third straight game. This dominance on the glass has been a key factor in their recent success, which has seen them win six of their last eight games and improve their season record to 11-8.

BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property.
NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER:
The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale
date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866) 960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site https://www.altisource. com/loginpage.aspx using the file number assigned to this case 2024-00703-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale
NOTICE TO
TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction, if conducted after January 1, 2021 , pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call (866) 960-8299 , or visit this internet website https://www.altisource. com/loginpage.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case 2024-00703-CA to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent
to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid, by remitting the funds and affidavit described in Section 2924m(c) of the Civil Code, so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase.

While many are turning New Years resolutions to focus on physical health, January is also a good reminder to reset and refocus on what’s important. For some, that could mean to live a longer, healthier lifestyle, or making sure you move throughout the day, just to take care of your heart health.
For those interested in doubling down at home, the Lassen County Office of Education posted some tips and a video that may prove inspiring. Snowy weather can make staying active a challenge, but finding creative ways to stay fit indoors can be fun and enjoyable for yourself, and the family.
All over the country, January is recognized as National Family Fit Lifestyle Month and National Healthy Weight Awareness Month.
Family Fit Lifestyle Month encourages families to go on a run together, or bike riding, to strengthen your body and spend quality time together. The other part of the challenge is to cook something healthy, something you and your family will enjoy, but also something that is nutritious and can be prepared for the entirety of the week. Take turns cooking a dish!
Healthy Weight Awareness Month dives deeper into the numbers, but it’s a good way to consider the
realities about obesity. From 2000, to 2020, obesity prevalence in the United States increased from 30% to 42%, while also doubling the percentage of severe obesity, from 4.7% to 9%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This month encourages people to consider a fresh start with healthier eating and exercise habits.
While outdoor activity may seem limited due to snowy conditions this winter, here are a couple tips from the Lassen County Office of Education on how to creatively stay fit indoors:
Dance it out in your living room
Stretch or try yoga
Turn chores like vacuuming or sweeping into a workout
For more tips on staying fit, watch this video from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
