BREAKING NEWS

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

The history of Santa Claus can be traced back to the fourth-century Christian Bishop St. Nicholas. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all his inherited wealth traveling the countryside helping the poor and sick. Over many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread, and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. St. Nicholas entered American popular culture towards the end of the 18th century. In December 1773, and again in 1774, a New York newspaper reported that groups of Dutch families had gathered to honor the anniversary of his death.

The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick’s Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas). In 1804, John Pintard, a member of the New York Historical Society, distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas at the society’s annual meeting, with the background of the engraving containing now-familiar images including

stockings filled with toys and fruit hung over a fireplace. Stores began to advertise Christmas shopping in 1820, and by the 1840s, newspapers were creating separate sections for holiday advertisements, which often featured images of the newly popular Santa Claus.

In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore, an Episcopal minister, wrote a long Christmas poem for his three daughters entitled “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” more popularly known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Moore’s poem is responsible for our modern image of Santa Claus as a “right jolly old elf” with a portly figure and the supernatural ability to ascend a chimney. The poem is said to have popularized the nowfamiliar image of a Santa Claus who flew from house to house on Christmas Eve in “a miniature sleigh” led by eight flying reindeer to leave presents for deserving children.

In 1881, political cartoonist Thomas Nast drew on Moore’s poem to create the first likeness of Santa. His cartoon depicted Santa

as a rotund, cheerful man with a white beard, holding a sack of toys for lucky children while wearing his bright red suit at his North Pole workshop with his elves, and his wife, Mrs. Claus.

In the United States, Santa Claus is depicted as flying from home to home on Christmas Eve to deliver toys to children. He flies on his magic sleigh led by his reindeer Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and of course, Rudolph. Santa enters each home through the chimney, which is why Christmas stockings are “hung by the Chimney with care.” Every year, children write letters to Santa and track Santa’s progress around the world on Christmas Eve leaving him cookies, milk, and carrots for his reindeer.

Parents can help their children track Santa’s flight pattern and location on the night of Christmas Eve using the Official NORAD Tracks Santa site at https://www. noradsanta.org.

Modoc County’s Shop with a Cop

The annual “Shop with a Cop” event brought holiday cheer to 11 local children—five boys and six girls—on December 18th. This beloved community event pairs law enforcement officers with children for a special day of gift shopping, laughter, and holiday spirit.

Participants included two families from Cedarville and several families from Alturas and surrounding areas. Each child was accompanied by an officer who helped them pick out gifts for their family using donated funds. Every officer received $100 to spend on their child, thanks to the generosity of local donors. Three officers had an additional $30 per child, and would use that to purchase something that the child had shown interest in.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the event included the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, Alturas Police Department, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Modoc County Probation, and California Department of Fish & Game Wildlife. Santa Claus made a special appearance, spreading joy and excitement among the children.

The Modoc County District Attorney’s Office and Victim Witness Services also joined the festivities, showing their support for the community. The Modoc County Deputy Sheriff’s Association donates at least $300 each year to help fund the event. Additionally, administrative staff contribute in-house donations to ensure the event’s success.

After shopping, everyone enjoyed pizza, cookies, and hot chocolate. Law Enforcement and Volunteers helped the children wrap their presents they had chosen, adding an extra touch of care and warmth to the day. Each child received a teddy bear, a folded Christmas card, scissors, tape, a cookie with their name on it, and a cup of hot chocolate.

The joy and excitement were palpable as some children received a ride home from officers, smiling ear to ear. “As soon as these deputies are united with these children, they just melt,” Tex Dowdy shared.

Sierra, the office financial coordinator, and other administrative staff went above and beyond to ensure every detail was perfect for the children.

The “Shop with a Cop” event continues to demonstrate the power of community support and the dedication of local law enforcement in Modoc County. Each year, this event not only provides gifts but creates cherished memories for children and officers alike. The Modoc County Sheriffs Office wants to send its sincerest gratitude to all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make this event possible every year.

Congratulations to Jim Cavasso, the winner of the gun safe drawing that Alturas Community Theater held this past fall. Thank you to Lau Miller for donating the gun safe and to Mandy and the Plumas Bank staff for selling our tickets....a great job well done. A huge thank you to all of the people who purchased tickets....our community entities continually need the support that you all provide. Again, thank you from the ACT Board of Directors.

Modoc High School to Transition to Traditional Bell Schedule in 2025-2026 School Year

Modoc High School announced a significant schedule change for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, with plans to transition from a block schedule to a traditional seven-period day. This shift, pending approval from the Governing Board, aims to address challenges posed by the ongoing teacher shortage.

Principal Kristen Budmark shared the news with families, students, and community members in a letter dated December 18, 2024. “This isn’t a decision we came to lightly, but it’s one we need to make,” the letter read. The change is largely driven by the need to streamline staffing between Modoc High School and Modoc Middle School, where conflicting schedules have made it difficult to share teachers efficiently.

The principal emphasized the importance of collaboration and transparency during this process, stating that the school is working closely with Superintendent O’Malley and other district sites to create a schedule that serves the needs of students, staff, parents, and the wider community. Families were reassured that their input is valued and that updates will be provided as plans develop. Community members are encouraged to share their feedback and questions, with the principal stressing that the school is committed to navigating this change together. “After all, we’re a family,” the letter concluded, expressing gratitude for the community’s continued trust and partnership.

MHS Principal says that not much has been decided and they are still in the beginning phase of the process and not much has been decided like minutes of each period. ”What has been decided is the need to align the middle and high school schedules, should we need to share more staff.”

Modoc High School students will return to campus on January 7, 2025, on a “B” day schedule following the holiday break.

This shift in scheduling highlights the broader impact of what happens when a school district doesn’t have enough educators, a challenge facing schools nationwide. Modoc High School’s leadership remains committed to finding solutions that prioritize student success and community needs.

Holiday Cheer Starts Here: Celebrate the Holiday Season

Responsibly

The Susanville Police Department announced on their Facebook the start of the National “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Enforcement Campaign beginning on December 11th.

The holiday season can be dangerous for people on the roads. In December 2022 alone, 1,062 people were killed in the U.S. in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Susanville Police Department wants to remind the public of the dangers of driving impaired and to celebrate the holiday season responsibly by not driving under the influence.

From December 11 through New Year’s Day, the Susanville Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The high-visibility enforcement effort is part of a national campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, with the goal of stopping suspected impaired drivers who put others at risk.

The Susanville Police Department encourages everyone to stay in for the night or have a “go safely” game plan by scheduling a ride or designating a sober driver if you plan to consume alcohol.

Impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other drugs may also cause impairment.

If you plan on drinking or taking medications with a driving warning label, let someone who is sober drive. If you see someone who appears to be driving while impaired, call 9-1-1.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Modoc County Historical Society hosted a community-wide effort to refill the Modoc High School Time Capsule, which was opened on October 30, 2024, after being sealed for 50 years. The project culminated in a ceremony on Thursday evening during the Block M Basketball Tournament at Modoc High School.

The Historical Society enlisted participation from over 50 clubs, service organizations, volunteer groups, and government agencies. Community members contributed a variety of items, including photographs, membership rosters, newspaper articles, and records of current costs, offering a snapshot of life in 2024 for future generations to discover.

“May they find family members and people they know in these pages, connecting them back to us and the parts of our community that we hold dear, and that it remains strong and continuing to thrive into 2074,” Modoc County Historical Society shared on their Facebook. “We’re hoping the people and places represented in this time capsule that may be gone in fifty years, might be reimagined or help to rekindle an idea to better the community. Along with the tangible items we’re sealing in this box, we’d also like to add a little bit of hope for their future and love for this little part of the world.”

The time capsule project drew strong community engagement, with 36 organizations donating memorabilia and messages of hope for the future. Organizers said they envision the items not only preserving the present but also inspiring future generations to reimagine traditions and strengthen the community.

During the ceremony, attendees expressed gratitude to Modoc High School for inviting the Historical Society to lead the effort. The event featured reflections on the past 50 years and aspirations for the next five decades.

The Modoc County Historical Society shared their hopes for the future time capsule openers in saying, “We’d also like to add a little bit of hope for their future and love for this little part of the world.”

The new time capsule was sealed during the ceremony and will be opened in 2074, continuing a tradition of connecting Modoc County’s past, present, and future.

The California Highway Patrol

(CHP) urges families to prioritize road safety during this holiday season.

To ensure the safety of travelers during the busy holiday season, the CHP is launching the first of two statewide Maximum Enforcement Periods this month. This effort focuses on minimizing traffic incidents by addressing unsafe driving practices and offering support to motorists.

“This time of year is about celebrating with family and friends, but it’s also a time when traffic incidents increase due to poor driving decisions,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Each of us has a role in making California’s roads safer. Let’s work together to keep this holiday season free of tragedy.”

The CHP’s Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period starts at 6:01 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, and concludes at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, December 25. During this extended period, the CHP will intensify patrols throughout the state to discourage hazardous driving behaviors, including impaired driving, excessive speed, distracted driving, and seat belt violations.

The CHP also encourages the public to report unsafe drivers by calling 9-1-1.

During last year’s 78-hour Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period, 20 lives were tragically lost in crashes under CHP jurisdiction. Additionally, CHP officers made more than 900 arrests for driving under the influence.

Modoc Braves Varsity Girls Basketball Overcomes Adversity to Claim Block M Tournament Championship

The Modoc Braves Varsity Girls Basketball team had a busy week last week playing 5 home games, winning all 5 games. The girls were shorthanded all week because of injuries and illness.

Lady Braves started off the week on Monday with a good win against Lassen High School. Modoc came away with the win 66-37. It was a solid team performance with Ashlynn Albright, Jordyn Sandage, Mackenzie Diven, and Aubree Knighton all scoring in double digits. Mackenzie Diven recorded a double/double leading the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

On Tuesday , Modoc hosted Lakeview High School and held off the Honkers 37-30. Due to injuries and illness Modoc was forced to play the entire game with 5 players. Allie Weber and Caelli DePaul led the way with Weber scoring 13 and DePaul scoring 10 points. Modoc was able to fight through the game with no substitutes and played great defense down the stretch.

On Thursday , Modoc hosted the Portola Tigers in the first game of Block M. The Lady Braves started off strong leading the first quarter 10-3 and ended up finishing off the game with a 57-32 win. The Braves had 3 players in double digit scoring. Allie Weber had 11

On Saturday, the final game of the Block M , Modoc hosted the Tulelake Honkers. After a slow start Modoc was able to get it together and beat the Honkers 6830. Modoc Had 3 girls in double digits with Ashlynn Albright Scoring 13, Kati Erquiaga and Makenzie Diven both scoring 14. Ashlynn Albright also led the team with 8 assists.

averaging 12 points per game, 6 rebounds, 5 assists , and 2 steals per game. Caelli Depaul was named to the All Tourney team averaging 11 points per game, 7 rebounds, 3 assists , and 2 steals.

The Lady Braves sit at 8-5 for the year, losing a few close games. We sit in a good spot with 5 games left to play until league play begins.

Coach Calvin Albright says, “we have been a little up and down this season and lost some very winnable games due to poor free throw shooting and lack of execution late in games.” This is a resilient group of girls, and the coaches are hoping the current 5 game winning streak will create some momentum to start the league.

Lady Braves travel to Redding on 12/31 and will play in the Enterprise tournament, where they will face some tough competition.

Lady Braves will travel to Bonanza on 1/7 and host a very good Hoopa Valley team on 1/13.

The Lady Braves will begin Shasta Cascade League play on 1/14. The Shasta Cascade League is setting up to be another very competitive season, with Fall River, Trinity, Weed, and Modoc all looking to be very tough this season.

Modoc High School Honors Aimee Boulade with Block M Tournament Dedication

The Modoc High School community gathered with heavy hearts and profound gratitude to honor the late Aimee Boulade, a cherished member of the Modoc Brave family whose contributions left an undeniable mark on the school’s basketball program and the broader community. In a beautiful tribute, the 67th Annual Block M Basketball Tournament was dedicated to her memory, celebrating her enduring legacy.

For more than two decades, Aimee was a cornerstone of Modoc High’s basketball program, faithfully running the scoreboard and ensuring each game ran smoothly. But her role extended far beyond the gym. Aimee was known for her warmth, encouragement, and dedication to studentathletes, coaches, and fans alike. Her infectious passion for the game and unwavering support for the community brightened every corner of the court.

Aimee’s love for the Modoc community was as vast as her interests. She was a lover of nature, often seen enjoying the scenic beauty of Modoc County, swimming at West Valley, or riding at Big Sage. Her life revolved around animals, particularly her beloved horses Missy, Princess, and Whiskey, with whom she shared a deep bond.

The tournament serves as a fitting tribute to a woman whose life epitomized integrity, sportsmanship, and community spirit. As the athletes took to the court, they carried Aimee’s legacy with them, embodying the values she held dear.

“Though she may no longer be with us physically, her legacy lives on in the echoes of the crowd, the swish of the net, and the memories we cherish. Let us honor her memory by playing with integrity, sportsmanship, and the same passion that defined her,” said MHS Principal Kristen Budmark during the dedication ceremony.

Whether barrel racing, showing her horses, or serving as a judge at the Sheriff’s Posse Horse Show, her love for equestrian activities was unmatched. Beyond her contributions to athletics, Aimee dedicated herself to nurturing young minds as a tutor at the local elementary school. Her impact on Modoc’s youth extended further as a foster parent, a role she embraced with love and care, ultimately culminating in her proudest moment — adopting her son, Hunter. Aimee’s community spirit was evident at every local event, from cheering at Homecoming games to enjoying the 4th of July parades. Her presence was a constant reminder of the strength and unity of the Modoc County community.
