Looking Back

Dear Editor, We received notice from Frontier Communications that as of November 30, 2026, they will discontinue traditional copper-based home phone service. Now unless you live in a “newly incorporated area,” of which there are none in Alturas area, you will lose your land line. If you live where you have cell service, that’s not a problem. For those of us that live where we don’t have cell service, and that’s a lot of the area, that could be a life threatening problem. Land line service only works 1/4 of the time, yet the bill is always for full time service. Why would the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approve this? They say our options are: Moving to a modern solution like: Lets us keep our current phone # Supports essential services like 911, alarm systems, faxes, & medical devices Delivers a reliable, modern service AND WHAT WOULD THAT BE?? October 9, 2025 A lot of us are on very fixed incomes, and have medical conditions. Cowboy Poet and Entertainer, Larry Maurice

The Modoc County Library and the Friends of the Library are pleased to announce the return of Cowboy Poet and Entertainer, Larry Maurice to the Alturas Library. Larry Maurice has spent many

years as a cowboy, horse wrangler, packer and ski instructor in the Eastern Sierra and the high deserts of Nevada. Mr. Maurice has hosted television specials for the FOX network, and

his one man show, “Cowboy; The Spirit, The Lore, The Legacy” continues to keep him traveling around the country. Through poetry, song and stories, Larry is able to transport his audiences back in time, allowing them to experience the cattle drives, characters and critters of the old west. Larry has received the Academy of Western Artists coveted “Will Rogers Cowboy Award” for Cowboy Poet of the Year and the prestigious “American Cowboy Culture Award” presented by the Lubbock Cowboy Symposium for lifetime achievement in Cowboy Poetry. This will be Larry’s fourth visit to the Modoc County Library. His performances are lively, entertaining,

Dale Walter McKee

Dale Walter McKee, age 86, passed away in Cottonwood, CA on Sept. 5, 2026. Dale was born to parents Wesley and Violet McKee at the McKee ranch in South Fork Valley, Likely, CA on Feb. 11, 1940. Dale was a life-long resident of Modoc County. He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth, son Monte, sister Cheri and both parents. Dale is survived by brothers Lane and Lyle, daughter Melanie and granddaughter Brittany. He is also survived by stepson Dan Brown, granddaughters Tiffanie

Louis Edward Williamson Jr.

Louis Edward Williamson Jr. was born on July 31, 1959 and passed away on September 16, 2026 at Saint

Mary’s hospital in Reno, Nevada. Louis leaves behind his sisters and brothers in law, Robin and Wade Teuscher, LuAnne and Gary Spicer and Lori and Jim Lloyd, his daughter Zoey Williamson and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis and his mother, Evelyn. Louis was born in Coalinga, California, the third child of Louis and Evelyn. After two girls, his dad was thrilled to have a son and was proud to name him Louis Jr. However, Louis had the nickname Dusty for many years before deciding he would follow his dad’s footsteps and be called Louis. Louis suffered a brain injury when he was two years old, which was around the time the last child, Lori, was born. While this was a devastating blow for his family, and Louis had to start over cognitively and physically, life did go on. Louis worked hard and fought his way back, and he continued throughout his life to tackle many obstacles that were placed in his way.In 1972 the Williamson family packed their bags and moved to Alturas. There they laid down roots and Louis went to high school after completing 8th grade. Louis had a lot

of support and was proud when he graduated from high school at Modoc High. Louis was the light of his father’s life and they were inseparable after his dad retired. Louis was often seen with his dad hauling a trailer with a lawnmower to various places to mow lawns. He was a hard worker, was friendly to everyone he met and always had something funny to say. Louis loved Johnny Cash, WWE wrestling and was a huge fan of the Washington Commanders aka the Redskins, as well as the baseball teams, New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed visiting with anyone who had a free minute or maybe even 15 or 20. He also loved to play cards, with friends old and new. Louis spent the last years of his life at Warnerview Convalescent hospital. His family appreciates the kindness of the staff, and all the care they provided. Services for Louis will be graveside at the Alturas Cemetery on October 1st at 11 am. A celebration of life will follow after the services at the home of Aaron and Jami Teuscher, 38851 Hwy 299.

Abel (Sonny) Guzman

Abel (Sonny) Guzman died peacefully in his home in Alturas, CA on Sept. 8 2026 at the age 90. Abel was born the son of Luis and Zafarina (Lujan) Guzman who resided in Los Nietos CA. He was married to Peggy (Quintero) his High School sweetheart in 1957. Together they had four sons Gary, Steve, Eddie and Frank. Abel proudly served in the Army as a member of the 10th Mountain Division. In 1980 Abel moved his family to Modoc County where he made a life for his family. He finished his career as the manager of the Newell Migrant Camp. Abel enjoyed all things outdoors and western. He loved target shooting, hot rods and horses. Abel had Christian beliefs and values and was a proud American.

Deputies seized approximately 151,177 marijuana plants, nearly 20,000 pounds of processed marijuana, and 11 firearms. Investigators also found thousands of pounds of garbage and dangerous pesticides. Many

sites were diverting and polluting water from nearby streams. Property owners on record will be taxed based on the size of each operation. The Sheriff’s Office thanked Lassen County Code Enforcement, Lassen County Environmental Health, the Lassen County Road Department, EPIC, and the BLM for their assistance.

Pick Up a Book. Sit Down Together. And Give Like Dolly. September 25 is “Give Like Dolly Day”, and First 5 Modoc is inviting families across Modoc County to celebrate in one of the simplest ways possible: Pick up a book and read it together! Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library started in 1995 with a dream of helping children develop a love of reading and learning. Today, children from birth through age 5 can receive a free, high-quality, ageappropriate book delivered to their home every month— at no cost to their families. That dream has been reaching children right here in Modoc County since 2016. Since then, more than 1,742 children have received the gift of books through the Dollywood Imagination Library. Just this year alone, households received 1,578 books from January through September. Every one of those books is an opportunity for a child to discover a new story, learn something new, use their imagination, and share a special moment with their family. So what can you do on September 25? Find a favorite book. Snuggle up with your little one. Read a story together. Talk about the pictures, ask questions, laugh, and enjoy those few minutes together. It doesn’t have to

be complicated—sometimes the simplest moments become the memories children carry with them. Give Like Dolly Day is also a chance for our community to think about how we can keep Dolly Parton’s memory and the work she cared about alive for generations to come. Supporting children, encouraging reading, and helping families are all ways we can continue that spirit. If your family is already part of the Imagination Library, we would love to hear from you! Free Flu Shots This October, the Modoc County Public Health Branch will be providing flu shots at several locations throughout the county. We are offering the vaccine free of charge to Modoc County residents who are six months of age and older. In addition to the standard flu vaccine, our agency has been allocated a limited amount of recombinant (high dose) influenza vaccine that will be designated for individuals 65 years and older. The recombinant influenza vaccine is one of the three vaccines which are preferentially recommended for this age group.
