Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, My wife and I are not ranchers but we live here in ranching country of Modoc County. My wife was born and raised on a farm in Petaluma back in the 1950s/60s, and her family had livestock, but she left that life over 50 years ago. We are also not vegans, we enjoy our beef and pork and chicken and sea food, so obviously we respect ranchers that raise critters for human consumption. If someone wants to virtue signal as a vegan, great, but the rest of us as omnivores enjoy eating animal flesh along with our veggies. What boggles our rational minds is this insanity about introducing wolves into California where they were never a native species. We see wolves as beautiful creatures that have a right to exist, but they have no natural right to exist anywhere in California. The introduction of wolves into California is evidence of a deranged environmentalist activism. The people supporting the introduction of wolves into California are clueless urbanites living in their urban ivory towers, totally detached from reality. There’s something very ulterior about this matter. Methinks that the people behind this wolf promotion issue are hoping that by protecting wolves that are killing livestock on ranches that ranchers will incur so many losses that they will go out of business. This is a very twisted thing going on. This is the quintessential war of urban California versus rural California, but all those urbanites have no clue where their food comes from. Jeff Middlebrook

Annual Sacred Mountain Powwow returns to Fort Bidwell this month

The fifth annual Sacred Mountain Powwow will bring dancers, drum groups, and community members together Sept. 25–27 at the Fort Bidwell Tribal Gymnasium. The three-day, drug- and alcohol-free event is open to the public with free admission and available camping. Vendors, drums, and dancers are all invited to participate.

Vickie Rhea Richardson

Vickie Hays was born September 29, 1945, in Alturas, California to Charles and Crystal Hays. She was the 4th of 6 children. She attended local schools and graduated with the Class of 1963 from Modoc Union High School where she was a song leader and Homecoming Princess. March 23, 1964 Vickie married Homer Dale “Bunk” Richardson. Bunk and Vickie welcomed their first child Zachary in 1964. Daughter Kelle followed in 1968. Then in 1971, Vickie gave herself a birthday present

September 17, 2026 with the birth of Collin that day. Vickie and Bunk had 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Vickie went to work for the Modoc Joint Unified School District as a Teacher’s Aide in 1977. She worked with Mr. Bob Burelle for many years as his aide. Vickie loved the kids and followed their progress through their school years. After 25+ years she retired from AES. Vickie was an avid Bridge and Pinochle player. She and her sister Susan regularly attended their weekly Bridge games. She enjoyed these afternoons and all of the ladies she played with. During The Hays Families Christmas Holiday “gatherings”, the pinochle tournaments would be one of the highlights. Vickie also enjoyed going to home Modoc Basketball games as Bunk was the MHS Varsity Basketball coach. Vickie was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Toward the end she spoke of them often and could not wait to see them. Those were her good days. She was so happy when any of her grandchildren came to see her and sat around teasing and reminiscing with her. Grandchildren came from Maryland, Washington DC,

Las Vegas and Reno. She was truly gratified that they could come. Those were the happiest days for her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, aunt and a good friend to many. Vickie had a strong faith and love for God and this faith sustained her and helped her to stay strong in her final days. She was a quiet, introspective, rather shy woman who read her Bible and wrote in her journal daily. She did not like attention or her picture taken but underneath this persona she had the constitution of a Steel Magnolia. She fought to the very end. Vickie is survived by her children: son Zachary (Sara) Richardson, daughter Kelle (Brent) Aikin and son Collin (Desirae) Richardson.... grandchildren: Brendon (Melissa) Richardson, Jury Richardson, Austin (Paulina) Herzog, Collin (Paige) Herzog, Elisabeth Herzog, Grace (Ian) Herzog, Avery Richardson....greatgrandchildren: Isla and Nicholas Richardson and Charlie Herzog. Siblings: Gary (Karen) Hays, Pat (Leonard) Fitch, James Hays, Susan (Gary) Slinkard, Anna Lee (Stephen) Essig and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bunk, grandson Nicholas Richardson and parents Charles Hays and Crystal Hays. Vickie went to her Lord peacefully on August 10, 2026 surrounded by her family. Zach, Kelle and Collin want to convey “that our mom’s faith, grandchildren and being in her home in Alturas gave her unbelievable strength to fight every day. Her siblings were unbelievably supportive and caring to her at the end of her life and we cannot find words that would do justice to the love that they showed our mom and us during this time. Our cousins were also there whenever our mother needed something: a conversation, taking care of pets, or staying with her through the night. It showed us the strength of family and we know this made our mom extremely proud”. Funeral Services are: October $24^{\text{th}}$, 2026 at 11 AM at Christen Life Assembly at 225 N. West B. St. in Alturas. A Celebration of Life will follow at The Niles Hotel JE Niles Room at 1230.

Modoc County Jury Finds Darrell Wood Guilty of Felony Sexual Abuse Counts

A Modoc County jury found Darrell Wood guilty on Sept. 10 of two felony counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object involving a minor, following a trial presided over by Judge Wendy Dier. Wood was convicted under California Penal Code Section 289(a)(1)(c)

for sexual penetration by a foreign object of a minor over the age of 14 accomplished by force, violence, duress, menace, or fear of immediate bodily injury. He was also found guilty under Penal Code Section 289(i) for sexual penetration by a foreign object. The jury further validated an

aggravating factor under California Attorney’s Office expressed gratitude Rules of Court 4.421(a)(11). to San Diego County District Prosecutors originally filed a 22-count Attorney Summer Stephan for information detailing allegations of interagency cooperation, as well as child sexual abuse across both Modoc and San Diego counties. She soon became an important part of her community where she proudly served for 25 years with T.E.A.C.H Inc. Resource and Referral program. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, her beloved Son Carl and her Sister Linda lea. She leaves behind family, friends, and countless people whose lives were touched by her. She is deeply missed by more people than we could ever possibly count. But those things- the places she lived, the years she worked, and even the number of people who loved her - are only a small part of who she was.

I knew her best as my mom. She is the greatest mother anyone could have asked for. She provided stability and support through uncertain times. She was unconditional love in every form. She patiently awaited the day she would become a grandma, and she cherished being the girl’s nanny. Enveloping them with Love, pride and the very best of her. She is also a loving and caring Sister who loved her siblings no matter how far their journeys led them. Distance could never change the love of family. She was also a wonderful friend. She would set and listen for hours. She never needed all the answers. And when you are finished, she offers a warm drink or

meal to fill your belly. And those meals were never just meals. They nourished your soul. Every plate carried a little piece of her heart. That was Mom. She showed her love through listening, cooking, showing up, patience and the quiet every day things that made you feel safe, cared for, and never alone. And all in spite of her own grief and loss. Her legacy will be that of Mother, Daughter, Sister, Nanny, Auntie, Beloved friend. But to those who were lucky enough to truly know her, she was so much more. She was home. And she will be loved, remembered. and missed for the rest of our lives.

Modoc Crazy Quilters Modoc Crazy Quilters gather every Tuesday at the Federated Church from 9 am-3pm. Come and go as you can, bring a project or just come visit. The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) Lunch The Senior Citizens Valley 50 Club (SCV50C) receives lunches every Tuesday and Thursday at the Senior Center in Cedarville. Lunch starts at noon, but conversation starts around 11:30. If you are in your 50’s we ask for a small donation for lunch. 60 and over is free. You can look at the menu TEACH in Alturas posts for the week in the paper for Tuesday and Thursday lunch or stop by and pick up a monthly menu at our center. Menus are also posted on the post office bulletin boards in the valley. We also have a potluck the 3rd Wednesday of every month. So come on down for some good food, conversation and laughs. Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick Wraps Up 2026 Legislative Session with 12 Bills on Governor’s Desk Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick (R-Alturas) wrapped up the 2026 legislative session after a final stretch of long floor sessions, thousands of votes and last-minute negotiations, finishing the year strong and delivering for her district. The Legislature was scheduled to complete its work by midnight on August 31, but the Assembly continued its final legislative day into September 1. “End of session is always a marathon—long days, late nights, hundreds of votes, bills changing by the hour and plenty of chaos right up until the final gavel,” Hadwick said. “When I look back at this year, what I am most proud of is the relationships my staff and I have built and the results we were able to deliver for the people of Assembly District 1.” Hadwick cast almost 3,000 votes during the year, served on 16 committees, served as Vice Chair of both

the Assembly Agriculture Committee and Emergency Management Committee, and served as Deputy Republican Leader. She finished the legislative year with 12 bills awaiting action by the Governor, one of which have been signed into law, including a resolution: Assembly Bill 1912 for archery hunters to be able to carry a firearm with them while deer hunting, and Assembly Concurrent Resolution 162 creating a Congressman Doug LaMalfa Memorial Highway in Butte County. Throughout the session, Hadwick focused on bringing the perspective of rural California into conversations at the Capitol, while working with legislators from both parties on issues important to her sprawling 11-county district. “I have always believed that relationships matter in this building,” Hadwick said. “We are not going to agree on everything—but when there

Hadwick has driven more than 45,000 miles so far in 2026 traveling between Sacramento and communities throughout Assembly District 1, which includes Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra and Siskiyou counties. While the conclusion of the legislative session marks the beginning of the final recess, Hadwick said her work will now shift almost entirely back to the district. “Legislative recess does not mean time off in District 1,” Hadwick said. “This is my favorite part of the year. I get to come home, get out on the road, and spend time with the people I am honored to represent.” Hadwick and her staff will spend the coming months holding local meetings, visiting communities and businesses, touring projects and hosting Community Conversations throughout

the district. “Representing 11 rural counties means you have to show up,” Hadwick said. “You cannot understand a district this large from behind a desk in Sacramento. I want to hear directly from the people I represent, see what is working and what isn’t, and take those conversations back with me when we return to the Capitol. We live so differently than they do in urban areas and now it’s my job to teach them about rural living.”

owners, it is not known what financial, operational, personal or other circumstances may have contributed to the closure or whether the current situation is intended to be permanent. More Than 30 Years in Modoc County The loss is particularly significant because K&K had been part of the Modoc County business community for more than three decades. K&K Company purchased the former Alturas Creamery building in 1997, and it was published in the Modoc Record. The original newspaper headline read, “K & K Distributing buys Alturas Creamery.” Over the years, K&K became considerably more than a place where businesses and residents could purchase food in bulk. The company supplied restaurants, stores, schools, health-care facilities and other organizations and provided delivery service throughout the area. When the business and property were later offered for sale, K&K was described as an established retail and wholesale food distributor that had served the greater Modoc County area for approximately 30 years. That history made the January sale an important transition not only for the owners but also for customers who had come to depend on the company. The consequences of losing a distributor are especially significant in a county as geographically isolated as Modoc. In a metropolitan

area, a restaurant or retailer that loses a supplier may have several alternatives nearby. In Modoc County, another distributor may be hours away — and larger regional distributors often require minimum orders that are beyond what an individual small business can afford or use. That problem quickly became apparent following Double Down’s closure. Businesses Begin Working Together As word of the closure spread, one Alturas business owner decided that finding a solution could not be accomplished one business at a time. Marina Solorio, owner of Marina’s Daily Dozen in Alturas, began personally calling stores and businesses throughout Modoc County to find out who had been affected and what they needed. Her calls stretched across the county — from Adin to Cedarville and California Pines to Tule Lake. From those conversations, Solorio began compiling a list of businesses interested in joining together in a cooperative purchasing effort that could allow them to obtain products from larger regional distributors. Companies such as Sysco, BakeMark and Morning Glory normally require minimum orders for delivery. While those minimums may be reasonable for large restaurants or businesses in more populated areas, they can be far beyond what

an individual small Modoc County business needs or can afford. By combining orders from several businesses, local retailers may be able to collectively meet those minimum requirements. Solorio didn’t stop with calling local businesses. She began contacting distributors herself, explaining the situation in Modoc County and asking whether they would be willing to make concessions or otherwise work with businesses affected by the sudden loss of their local supplier. “I called everyone, all the way to Reno, and I was met with generosity,” Solorio said. As of this week, the developing plan is to establish a central hub where regional distributors could deliver consolidated orders. Participating businesses could then pick up their individual supplies from the hub. Such an arrangement could allow a group of small businesses to collectively place an order large enough to meet a distributor’s minimum while preventing any one business from having to purchase more inventory than it can afford or use. For Solorio, the effort is about more than solving an immediate supply problem. It is about helping locally owned businesses remain open through what could otherwise be a difficult winter. “Most of our local businesses can’t even afford to advertise, let alone make an order large enough to meet minimums,” Solorio

said. “The goal is to survive the winter.” There are still unanswered questions surrounding Double Down Distributing and what will ultimately happen to the operation that served the county as K&K for more than 30 years. But while those questions remain unanswered, Modoc County businesses are already working together to find their own solution. For Solorio, that response says something about the community itself. “We have grit here in Modoc,” she said. “We’re resilient.”

For businesses accustomed to relying on K&K and later Double Down for food and other supplies, the change left some searching almost immediately for alternative suppliers. “It has literally touched everyone in Modoc County in one way or another,” one retailer claimed. Reaction among local business owners, however, has not been entirely critical. Some expressed sympathy for Cederwall and Bass, saying they believed the new owners may have underestimated the demands of operating a distribution company serving businesses scattered across such a large and sparsely populated rural area. The exact circumstances that led Double Down to cease regular operations remain unclear. The Modoc Record made repeated attempts to obtain the owners’ perspective. Four telephone calls were made to the business, with detailed messages explaining that the newspaper was preparing an article about the closure and requesting an opportunity for Cederwall or Bass to comment. Those calls were not returned as of press time. A reporter also visited the business on West Carlos Street. Although lights were on inside the building and a pickup truck was parked outside, the doors were locked and no one responded. Without comment from the

Operations of this scale require meticulous route planning, coordination with local authorities, and specialized multi-axle carrier setups to safely maneuver oversized loads through tight municipal intersections. Paramount-based Contractors Cargo Co. handled the transport. The unit was stageunloaded near White Bear Construction. A second transformer—weighing an additional 130,000 pounds—

is scheduled to make the same journey in about two weeks. Once both units are staged in Alturas, specialized transport crews will haul them up Crowder Flat Road to support a major regional substation expansion designed to bolster grid reliability across portions of Northern California and Nevada.
